I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A bunch of short stories, probably best categorized as flash fiction. They're mostly fantasy, but not really high fantasy. A lot of them have horror overtones as well.

A bit weird, but entertaining. A quick read.

I primarily read YA and adult fantasy and sci-fi, but now and then I try to read something out of left field to keep my writer wheels greased. A flash fiction collection seemed like a solid gear shift. It was certainly a shift, but not in the way I expected. I’d argue that this whole collection is one giant, ballsy literary/speculative fiction experiment.

I scratched my head at first regarding who I might consider the target audience. There’s no Netflix pitch for this kind of thing. Ultimately I think this book belongs in the hands of speculative fiction writers. There’s a level of writerly boldness in the experimental nature of these stories, a flexing of the craft muscle that wants to push limits. Through leading by example, Karen dares the reader to take potentially polarizing creative leaps that most writers shy away from.

On a craft level: Karen demonstrates a clear understanding of “textbook” craft rules and then breaks them. They clearly put in the work to understand why the rules are rules in the first place, which is SO refreshing, since (frankly) “breaking the rules” often looks like the author simply doesn’t understand the rules. It’s like finding an artist who paints with weird objects but delivers a captivating result anyway.

And the tension! Karen has a marked skill for writing tension into small spaces, particularly through subtext. I was surprised at how few of their pieces contained expositional sentences. Exposition isn’t inherently bad, of course, but it’s so easy to slip into it instead of exploring more interesting, organic ways to convey the same information. The lack of them kept the tension high and propulsion fast. I sped through these stories so quickly that I doubled back on some of them to make sure I squeezed out every aha! moment.

My favorite aspect of this collection is how each story comes with a brief footnote or two. The peek inside their head as they wrote each story shows the level of consideration each choice contained. Often times the footnotes changed my mind about how I would’ve done it, which demonstrates just how differentiated execution can be with the same story elements. Recognizing subjectivity through Karen’s lens could help writers might find liberation from criticism too. After all, if you don’t agree with the decision but can acknowledge that it was executed effectively for the author’s purposes, wouldn’t that mean your work can be effective despite a negative comment?

Sometimes when I see footnotes it comes across as the author stroking their own ego, but Karen openly expresses a tender pride and vulnerability that most authors refuse to share. They aren’t afraid of the reader’s critique, but they value it. To me, that’s the mark of a professional. As I read, I felt trusted to interpret the work in all its freedom and weirdness, and that made for a delightful read.

This collection contains the psychology of a brave writer in a nutshell. Anyone who is polishing their craft would benefit from reading it.

So I think the short passage format was just not for me. Most of the stories just didn't have enough to get invested, or even to get me thinking about where those stories could go. To be fair, given that most if not all of the stories were writing exercises, I think that was the point, but I still wish they had gripped me more. That being said, there were a few gems in here that did get me thinking, did get me wanting more, and I think Karen knows which ones they are. They know the ones that could be expanded and made into full novels, and I await the day when I get to read those.

A wide ranging collection of sci-fi/fantasy shorts and flash fiction. Great for reading in chunks on your lunch break, which is what I did! Loved the experimental nature of the pieces and the contextual annotations. Some of the stories really surprised me and made me think.

This is a great little collection of short stories changing in thematic spectrum as you read. There is certainly something in here for everyone as many of the stories go to the heart of the human experience, with a scattering of titles dear to the author's own life experiences. The book is finished before you know it, with nothing that slows you down from start to finish. It is also a work for inspiring writers to get their own ideas flowing.

The Art of Capturing Phantoms: Definitive Edition is a striking showcase of how expansive short fiction can be when handled with precision and imagination.

Across stories that range from speculative and science fiction to quietly philosophical and hauntingly intimate, Karen A. Parker demonstrates remarkable control of language and form. Each piece feels deliberately shaped economical yet emotionally resonant inviting the reader to linger on ideas long after the final line. Whether exploring collapse and rebirth, artificial intelligence, or moments of quiet wonder, the collection consistently rewards close attention.

What unifies the anthology is not genre but sensibility. The stories share a luminous curiosity about existence, identity, and perception, often delivered through unexpected narrators and inventive premises. The chromatic structure adds an additional layer of cohesion, giving the collection a subtle rhythm and visual resonance.

This definitive edition feels both refined and generous a collection that trusts its readers, challenges expectations, and proves that short-form storytelling can be just as immersive and affecting as the longest novel.

The Art of Capturing Phantoms: Definitive Edition is a carefully structured, multi-genre anthology that explores a wide emotional and conceptual range through short-form storytelling. Karen A. Parker demonstrates strong control over tone and pacing, shifting seamlessly between speculative fiction, introspective narratives, and surreal conceptual pieces.

What stands out most is the intentional diversity of narrative lenses. Each story operates as a self-contained idea experiment, yet collectively they form a broader exploration of perception, identity, and imagination. The chromatic framing, eight colors, eight thematic threads, adds an underlying structural cohesion that elevates the collection beyond a simple assortment of stories.

The strength of the work lies in its economy of language and conceptual clarity. Rather than relying on length, the stories focus on delivering precise, impactful moments that linger beyond their page count.

This collection is a strong fit for readers who appreciate literary speculative fiction, experimental storytelling, and short-form narratives that prioritize concept, tone, and thematic depth.

Running the gamut of speculative fiction genres, this collection of flash fiction showcases an author with immense potential.
Parker’s work is hopeful and dystopian, sometimes at the same time. Each piece gives us just enough to enjoy what is there while some stories are begging to be expanded into full-length works.

Of particular note is the story “Her Sins” which will only make you cry if you are a human who has ever made a mistake. The end of “On Top of Lone Hill” is delightfully twisted and the central conceit of the title story is ripe for a novel that dives into full-blown horror.

See you on Fifth, Karen!
