Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.
Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.
It's a pretty formulaic shonen that successfully assigns the well-known genre tropes to its characters. However, it takes a few chapters, maybe even the entirety of volume one, to actually find its groove. Once it finds its footing, Fife Force starts to shine both with its world-building and characters. It doesn't present much of an arc in the first three volumes, but there's enough mystery and heart to ignite interest and make it a very enjoyable read.
Volume 1: The story of a kid/teen old enough to join a paramilitary firefighting organization trying to find out the secret of how his Mother and Brother really died. It is a solid idea following the Manga idea/tradition that the main character has powers that need to improve before they can learn the big secret and save everyone.
This is another Manga that I have watched a bunch of the Anime. The main character is kind of annoying, but not as annoying as the guy who thinks he is King Arthur. I like the anime even with it having a lot of "fan service" holding it back. But turns out that is tame compared to the Manga where the 2nd time we meet two of the female characters they are fully nude in the shower. There are improvements in the anime such as Maki not being such an airhead (asking if the other female is going to marry the new guy) that suddenly turns serious and defeats our hero, in the anime she is just good at her job and a bad-ass. Then later when Tamaki (the lady with cat girl powers) I don't know having our Hero and Arthur "accidentally" molest her (groping & hands under her clothes) is a little much. I know all through the anime her clothes just kind of explode leaving her randomly nude with strategic scraps of clothing remaining but dang the Manga. Anyway, way to much fan service to plot ratio in this Manga.
We make it to the end of Volume 1 and while the plot advanced in the end a lot of this was just filler. It would be a five star story if not for the over the top fan service and well - everyone is just dumb and clueless.
Volume 2: Now that we are all settled into the story we can have even more fights. Believe it or not the plot advances even with all the fighting. Our brave team is storming Squad 5's barracks as the volume ends.
Volume 3: The story is going along just fine. We have the fight with company 5 and suddenly company 5 & 8 are best friends getting along just fine thank you very much. In fact the head of company 5 shows up at station 8 and has a nude shower with the other women in the company. This shower scene has three of the four main female characters nude fully unclothed facing the reader. I guess it is OK if they are depicted as angelic Cherubs with no visible nipples or sex organs. But still maybe some steam or soap bubbles strategically placed next time if you are not going to go full on nudes. Just kind of distracting and not really advancing the plot here - oh and turns out the nun Sister Iris is only 16 years old according to her bio at the end of the volume...
So. Now looking for the conspiracy company 8 is sending the least socially skilled (least spy like) members to infiltrate and spy on Company 1. Company 1 is currently the main suspect in all the evil going on.
I'm torn on rating this. Part of me thought the premise was sort of interesting and a part of me wants answers to the questions that were brought up here. There are some compelling elements. But the insane amount of fan service is off putting, and I just don't much like the characters. I watched the Soul Eater anime a bit and didn't like that much either, so I knew there was a chance going into this that this wouldn't appeal to me. The question is, did this interest me enough to get past all the elements I didn't like? I'm not sure. I think, overall, this just doesn't capture me enough to want to continue. And I already have an insanely long list of mangas I want to get to. I have to weed out a little some of these longer collections and really focus on the manga that actually interests me.
Update: Apparently, volumes 4-11 are on Kindle Unlimited, so I might give this series a bit more of a chance since I can just check them out instead of paying for them. Maybe my rating might slide up a little.
due to my absolute adoration and the nostalgia tinted glasses i wear when thinking of soul eater, i really wanted to love this. and parts of it i did! the art, the fashion, the character design, the world building, honestly even the plot i was enjoying and i do see myself wanting to know what else happens.
however - i will be finding out the rest of the story most likely through the anime and not the manga. this is not me saying the anime is better, it won’t be, it never (usually) is, but i just don’t think i can continue the manga as it is so fan-service heavy and it irritates me how i can already see every single female character is going to blush over shinra… the female characters in this are entertaining and i want to learn more about them but not when i see them showering constantly and panty shot every now and again. and don’t get me started on the stupid “lucky lecher lure” character who is used (as of right now) just as a pawn in the story to give the male characters and excuse to be weirdly sexual at random intervals. most of the time, anime toned down fan service to an extent that is somewhat bearable.
i am a hypocrite, i will declare loud and clear as previously mentioned i absolutely love soul eater. soul eater runs through my blood and i praise it so much because it was something i felt deeply connected to when i was younger. it also does have an amazing story (manga is better!) despite its occasional fan service so thats why im still going to give fire force a chance by watching the anime. also the reason i read the soul eater manga is due to how the anime ended which was unfaithful to the manga ending by a huge extent.
Amazing start to the manga, I really loved Company 8’s crew and they all stood out to me. The mystery of the infernals is great, and the battle with Company 5 and the infiltration of Company 1 were fantastic. I’m hooked.
I enjoy the premise and the story line so far but I definitely could do without all the fan service 😵💫... there's a handful of it already so I hope that calms down in the next volumes/the rest of the series-- that's really my only complaint. I started reading the manga because I watched all the anime that was released and im dying to know what happens!
The omnibus has soft flexible paper that feels good to hold and its nice to have large pages to look at. The art looks good just like the anime and you get all the notes and illustrations from the individual volumes but more affordable. A good way to start collecting these over time.
3.5 stars, i forgot how fan service-y the manga is. i can’t remember how close to the anime this is, but i’ll probably still rewatch it as well because the sound editing is so good. this is also one of the few mangas i haven’t been spoiled for so i hope it gets weirder 🫶🏻
My very first manga! It was interesting and had me hooked! A little bit confusing on characters and abilities. Also as an American reader it felt very randomly sexual??? I look forward to reading the next omnibus
I really like this story but the fan service scenes are super off putting to me. Will continue the series for now but I hope that calms down in the future.
4.5* stars, rounded up for full omnibus volume. 4* stars for single volume one. His first step to achieving his dream of becoming a hero, like he promised his mother he would, Shinra joined the Special Fire Cathedral 8. This team is tasked with discovering the source of the deadly phenomenon plaguing the city of Tokyo: spontaneous human combustion! He's known as Third Gen, meaning he is blessed with the ability to ignite fire from his feet and travel faster than a racing car. But Shinra's haunting past follows him, along with the cruel moniker, Devil's Footprints. Will he become the hero he dreams of, or will the fires of his past prove he is a devil?
This is a really fun start. Shinra has a lot of things to work through relating to his past, but he's a very likable character and someone that's easy to root for. Some of the characters are reminiscent of Soul Eater, Vol. 1 characters, but their designs and personalities are totally different. I like to see how similar yet progressed the art is between different series written/drawn by the same person. I just think it's fun to notice the differences.
The world is interesting, and I am looking forward to getting to know all the characters, but I can't say it is super different from other shonen series; however, it does stick out in its own right with its premise. I also like how the majority of the art is bold and has thick lines, yet it has stellar detailing, even for innocuous things in the background. And the fire looks so good!
This review is only for the single volume one, even though I'm currently reading the omnibus set. I'm still going to review volumes one, five, ten, etc., and also put them on the corresponding omnibus volumes that house those single volumes.
I can't wait to read more, and from the cliffhanger at the end, I'm really looking forward to diving into the mysteries surrounding the fire company and Shinra's life. If you like action and shonen series, then definitely give this a try. But also, don't discount it because of it being a shonen series. I can tell there's gonna be a bit more to it than just action.
