Secrets In The Mirror

Rate this book
Family. The same people who destroyed Gavin's self-esteem are the ones he must save.

When Gavin looks in the mirror he sees his twin Devon ― literally. Yet like the mirror, inside they are the reverse of each other. Devon is the chosen one, anointed by their tough Mob-connected father, who demeans Gavin as a nerd but expects him to save his brother from his worst instincts. Gavin struggles to believe in himself and make his own decisions in the face of Dad's bullying and Devon's narcissistic gaslighting. When Devon gets into drugs and crime, people start dying. Gavin's loyal allies tell him he can't save his twin; he must save himself. He flees to find freedom and success far away, but he can't hide from his sociopathic brother, or from the Mob.

Secrets In The Mirror is a sweeping saga of one family's journey to rise above cultural precedent. But Gavin is the one who must finally break the shackles of multigenerational and narcissistic abuse, despite inextricable bonds with a twin who's headed for self-destruction. It is a tale that grapples with the imperative to save others versus the struggle to save oneself.

Leslie Kain was always writing something when she was a kid – including secret plans – culminating in running away across country at fifteen, never looking back. But in her careers (psychology, Government Intelligence, nonprofits), her writing was limited to nonfiction: professional, research etc. Finally dabbling in fiction during spare moments above the clouds, her short stories found their way into literary journals and anthologies. She developed personal relationships with her characters, who relentlessly nagged her into longer stories. Her debut novel, ‘Secrets In The Mirror’ was published by Atmosphere Press Sept 2022 (the audiobook will be released Summer 2023 and the sequel early 2024). She leverages her twisted background and education, training & experience in psychology to write dark psychological stories of flawed people whose greatest obstacles to happiness lie within them. Kain earned degrees in psychology from Wellesley College and an MBA from Boston University. Originally from “all over” the U.S. (although a piece of her heart remains in Boston), she now resides in Mexico with her husband and cat Sheba. I read an early copy of this compelling and explosive story about abuse and addiction, and was instantly pulled into the layers of dysfunction--going back generations--within Gavin's family.

For Gavin, having an identical twin is a living, breathing nightmare. The two might look the same on the outside, but inside they are the mirror image of each other, and their personalities could not be more different.

Devon has undiagnosed Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Gavin is his main target. Even as Gavin tries to find his own path and follow his dreams of being a famous chef, he is constantly pulled back into his brother's orbit. That orbit becomes more and more dangerous as Devon takes over the family business and his increasingly risky behavior and grandiose thinking threaten everyone’s safety.

Bring in the Mob, and what happens next will keep you reading way past your bedtime!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an electronic ARC of this novel, and to NetGalley for providing me with an outlet on which to read it.

Expected publication date: September 16, 2022

Leslie Kain’s debut into fiction focuses on two “mirror” twins, brothers who are, in every way, alike and yet the exact opposite. Devon and Gavin are two planets, circling each other since birth, and as they grow up and develop their own personalities, Gavin begins to realize how very different he is from his brother. But Devon refuses to let Gavin go, and will ensure that his twin stays by his side, regardless of his motivations, or Gavin’s thoughts on the matter.

“Secrets in the Mirror” follows the twins, initially as teenagers, all the way through to adulthood. Devon is “The Golden Child”, heralded by all who know him (including the twins’ father) to do “great” things. Gavin is merely the younger twin, the one who has been told since early childhood that his purpose is to ensure Devon stays out of trouble. “Mirror” is a tale of brotherhood and twindom, but it also includes deeper topics such as narcissistic personality disorder, co-dependency, addiction and abuse (physical and emotional).

“Mirror” has all the makings of a good novel, and it started out that way. I was captivated by the devious side of Devon, and immediately felt empathy for Gavin, who is merely a cog in his older brother’s machine. The novel is narrated in the third person, and mostly by Gavin, although other characters do occasionally take over. By writing in this way, Kain ensures that the reader is able to follow the plot, and I was easily able to recognize who the speaker was.

The novel, as mentioned, starts in teenage-hood, but it jumps months and years at a time. “Mirrors” highlights the important incidents that changes the landscape of each twins’ development so the necessary information is imparted, but giant chunks of time are completely ignored. Decisions are made in the background, with the outcome being the only thing the reader is made privy to, and this made me feel a little disconnected from the characters and the plot.

The conversational language between the characters wasn’t as developed as I was expecting, but again, this was more noticeable toward the end of the novel (e.g.: important conversations that should have happened were overlooked, however a mundane talk between Gavin and his friends was included in detail).

I loved the mental illness aspect of this novel and Kain’s depiction of the terrifying rollercoaster that is addiction; especially how the two go hand-in-hand and how the entire family suffers as a result. Gavin was as likable as Devon was detestable, and I did enjoy their fraught, co-dependent, one-way relationship. I would’ve liked more detail in the important areas, which may have been easier to do if Kain had picked a timeline to focus on as opposed to covering the entire young adulthood of the two brothers. Although including the twins’ father’s involvement in the mob made sense to help a reader understand Tony and how he became who he was, I wanted more of the twins relationship, and less of the mob “capo” business antics of the family. Kain is right on the edge of delivering a powerhouse novel, and I am looking to read more of her work as she continues to develop as a writer.

As a mother of identical twins, I know just how similar and different twins can be, and I was eager to read SECRETS IN THE MIRROR. Kain does a fabulous job of showcasing Devon and Gavin individually as well as their interesting dynamic, which easily comes across as the classic good versus evil theme. At times, I was intrigued by the psychology behind the boys’ actions, both Devon’s and Gavin’s, as well as the family’s actions, and the multigenerational dysfunction that wove the narrative together was both relatable and realistic. I’m not one to give away spoilers, but this book has it all: complex characters, a layered narrative, and tension that builds. You don’t want to miss this one!

This was a crazy story of a dysfunctional family. I really enjoyed the authors writing and depictions of Devon. It felt very raw and real. At times hard to read as I felt so bad for Gavin and his mother.

Thrilling

I have always been fascinated with stories that involve identical twins and how similar or different they are. Leslie Karin’s novel Secrets In The Mirror is a wonderful character study of twin boys Devon and Gavin, and their traits whether environmental or genetic. The story also focused on themes of the complex family dynamics, mental illness, and the underdog story. I was fascinated with how well the characters were presented and you really get an essence on what they are all about - I was invested and that carried with me through the whole story. This was a great psychological suspense story with lots of emotion and intensity! Well don Leslie Kain!

Secrets in the Mirror by Leslie Kain. Thanks to the author for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gavin and his twin brother, Devon, may look the same but they are very different. Devon bullies Gavin and gaslights him at every turn. Gavin is desperate to break free but also wants to protect his brother.

This was a great family saga with some complex and well developed characters. I liked the mental health aspect and look at a character that you love to hate. In fact , there are a few characters you love to hate. I liked the character study in the first half a lot. The second half got pretty exciting but I wasn’t as into the mob and criminal plot.

“Colleen knew she must find a way to reverse the destructive and trajectory their family was on. To save Tony, their marriage, their sons.”

Secrets in the Mirror comes out 9/13.

Leslie Kains debut novel is a page turner - great storytelling and a cast of truly believable characters. I’ll definitely be following this author to see what she produces next.
Devon and Gavin are twins - mirror twins. They are brought up in a relatively stable background but Devon, the oldest by ten minutes, is favoured by their father and is constantly heralded as the best at everything whereas Gavin is treated like a nerd whose only true goal in life is to look out for his brother.
Don’t want to spoil this for you so I’m only going to say that this family saga is truly disturbing emotional character building friendship trust - every emotion in life.
Loved every word.

The psychological aspects of these characters is handled with such cleverness and detail that it makes the characters extremely engaging, even when you can’t like them. More than a good versus evil twin trope, this book explores family dynamics, the impact of toxic relationships and the struggles to come to terms with what you don’t want to accept. It’s also very well written with clear, crisp dialogue and contexts.

This is a novel about a dysfunctional family that is centred around "mirror twins" from early years to adulthood. The dialogue was good, some strong, complex character and the explanations on mental illness was well defined. However I felt that whilst the storyline was interesting it could have been developed further - there were some gaping holes in primary elements of the story and too much focus on more commonplace topics. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance reader copy.

Come For The Twin / Mental Illness / Addiction / Mob Story. Stay For The Badass Twin Tattoo. This story is some interesting/ weird melding of a twin study and most any mob-based story. The driving focus is a pair of mirror twins and one of the twins' mental illness and descent into addiction, and this slow burn story - taking place over roughly a decade of their lives - does a great job of showing the havoc it can wreak. And yet, the story never actually feels preachy, and Kain even manages to convey just how giving the one twin is and how menacing the other twin can be. Along the way we even get elements of The Hundred Foot Journey, which was an interesting addition to the overall tale. A strong work for a promising debut author, and very much recommended.

This book started out good and just kept getting better and better. The characters and the plot continually pull you deeper in, and to say "I couldn't put this book down", especially the closer to the end I got, is not a cliché, or if it is a cliché it is so because it is true. I found myself speculating on what was going to happen next, and in nearly every case I was wrong but was then happily surprised by the author's creative plot turns. But besides being a fun read, Secrets In The Mirror skillfully interweaves its plot and characters with truly profound questions about who we as human beings are, how did we get this way, how does nurture trump nature, or vice versa, and how can people including even identical twins be so completely different? What kept me intensely engaged was the moral question of how far should a person go to try to help--or literally save--another person, including even a family member who on most levels is despicable. And this book helps me to see more clearly how, in our own lives, as in the lives of the author's identical twin characters, we are continually knowing and coping with people we admire and respect, as well as with people we dislike--who we may even detest and know are dangerous to ourselves and society--all the while holding out hope that some somehow we can find a way to get along. I can't wait for Leslie Kain's next book. Doug Irmen, author of Let There Be Light: Saving Ourselves and Our Planet Through a Global Social Compact.

Leslie Kain's debut explores the question of nature vs. nurture when it comes to families and siblings. Identical twins Gavin and Devon DiMasi share everything but their father's love, that is reserved for Devon who by virtue of this birth order is the older twin, by ten minutes.

Kain has crafted a fascinating fly-on-the-wall view of DiMasi family as patriarch Tony DiMasi spends his way into acceptance in the family's posh suburban Boston community. Tony carries his family's Italian immigrant legacy and ties to business in Boston's North End community.

Kain's beautiful writing, intense characters, and unique setting are compelling. Will the twins break free of each other, continue to live in codependency, and find their own way in the world? The book's twist and turns and cast of characters are well drawn. This is a story full of emotions that anyone with a close sibling can understand.

I’ve always been drawn to thrillers with twins. Maybe because my mom is a twin and my grandmother was a twin.

Leslie Kain has written a dark and chilling tale about twins Devon and Gavin. Not only are they twins, but they are also identical mirror twins. They may be genetically identical, but they have been raised very differently.

Their father, who is connected to the mob, has always treated Devon as the perfect son, the winner. This only feeds Devon’s extreme narcissism. Gavin, on the other hand, is criticized by his father, and Devon joins in on the bullying. When the “perfect” twin gets messed up in drugs and criminal activity, Gavin sees this as a good time to make an escape. He tries to start a new life, but he and his twin can never be apart.

I have to admit this was hard to read at times; it was chilling to see how cold and brutal Devon, and even their father, could be. It gets really interesting when Gavin has to make some moral decisions. This deals with multigenerational abuse, mental illness, drugs, and a lot of crime, and it's woven into a great plot of 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘺𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵?

I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you Leslie Kain and RABT Books Tours and PR. I'm excited to be a part of this tour.

Secrets in the Mirror is the story of a set of twins (Gavin and Devon) and their connection to the mob. I am fascinated by all thing’s mobs, twins, and suspense. This book did not disappoint. While Gavin and Devon look identical, they couldn’t be more different. Devon is the alpha male who bullies and gaslights his twin as often as he can. Naturally Gavin wants nothing more than to escape his lot in life.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. It is engaging, full of dysfunctional dynamics, and complex characters. The author does a great job of weaving family dynamics into this story set against the backdrop of the mob and their criminality. The characters are brilliantly written (flaws and all) yet it’s hard not to empathize with Gavin and their mother. The supporting characters are eclectic and bring a depth to this story. The descriptions are vivid, and I felt like I was in the story. I also appreciate the way the author dealt with mental illness. It helps us understand the toll mental illness takes on the person and their family.

I highly recommend this one! It’s my first book by this author, and it won’t be the last. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good family drama filled with twists you won’t see coming!

At what point do you cut ties?
Gavin and Devon are identical twins, the mirror image of each other. Devon has been told his whole life by their father that he is the special one, the best at everything he does. Gavin meanwhile has lived a life of rejection by their father, treated as if he's less than Devon. The only thing Gavin is good at, and expected to do forever, is to take care of Devon, especially from himself. Their mother tried to give Gavin support but even she is at the mercy of their bullying father. Their father owns a number of liquor stores and is always trying to stay one step ahead of the Boston mob. When Devon gets involved with drugs and then takes over his father's business he finds himself in a life of crime and although Gavin takes a more productive path, he can't get out from under his brother. After being there for Devon led to threats on his own life, he runs, but will that be enough to finally free himself?

I loved this story for so many reasons. The exploration of the relationship of the two brothers with the influence of a tough guy father was stellar. The story is crafted so well it flows from beginning to its inevitable ending. The characters come alive off the pages and feel like real people as if it were a nonfiction story. This is also dysfunction at its most extreme.

If you're looking for an unforgettable and captivating family drama story as well as a new author to follow, I can't recommend this one highly enough!

Wow! If this is Leslie’s award-winning debut novel, then I look forward to seeing more of her work.
Secrets in the Mirror is a gripping psychological suspense tale that dives into the lives of one dysfunctional family. Toxic relationships, narcissistic behaviour, abuse, mental health, crime, the Mob and much more is what Leslie gives us.
The characters are well written, and they may be identical twins, but they could not be more different. It’s good versus evil but who will win out? Gavin has never been good enough, but he is expected to step in. He wants nothing more to do with the family ties that bind him to them. He was to be free to make his own choices to live a life away from the dark underbelly of his father and the dangers of his brother.
I did feel there were some issues within the story, but I think as Leslie grows as an author and writes more these sorts of things will sort themselves.
I am off to read What Lies Buried. Enjoy!

Devin and Gavin are mirror twins they look exactly alike but have totally different personalities. Devon takes after his machismo dad Tony he was a bully And has delusions of Grainger Gavin is more like his mom thoughtful down-to-earth and a kind soul. More than once Gavin will have to drop everything to try and save Devon in the fee don’t his dad Tony will blame him eventually though Devon will get in to things that will be bigger then him and bigger than his whole family. The attitudes of his dad and Devon will cost the family big time but in the end Gavin will know what’s important. I didn’t want to put in the summary what wasn’t in the book but let me just say Devon is a jerk his dad was a jerk and poor Gavin had to put up with all of it in the fact that he came out sain is a testament to the human condition. As for his mom though she allowed Tony to beat her up and made excuses for him and although Gavin gave her credit for taking up for him I think we are too far away from the generation that put up with that to give a pass. I found her to be weak and it was truly sad because she was very smart and a doctor just not when it came to her husband. This book was so good and although it’s fiction this is happened in real life maybe not the way it happened for Gavin and Devon but it has happened in more than once. I highly recommend this book and thoroughly enjoyed it I love to Gavin and Kayde and I also like the mom Pataut as I said that she was weak. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Leslie Kain, the author of “Secrets in the Mirror” has written a chilling psychological thriller. The genres for this book are Psychological Literary Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Family Life Fiction, and Mystery and Suspense. This is an edgy novel filled with suspense, betrayals, gaslighting, danger, threats, psychological and physical abuse, substance abuse, and dysfunctional family dynamics. The author has written a terrifying book about identical twins, who are as opposite as day and night, or good and evil. This is one book that reminds me of nature vs. nature.

One twin has been praised for being the strongest, the best, and superior by their father, and the other is told he is a nerd, and inferior. Devon has been told that he is the stronger twin, yet he is diagnosed as a narcissist and sociopath. Gavin, is told he is inferior, yet he struggles to free himself and his identity. If they look in the mirror, they look the same, but they are totally opposite.

As the boys mature, Devon becomes addicted to drugs and becomes involved with the mob. Their father always turns to Gavin to clean up Devon’s messes and keep him on track. Gavin becomes aware that his father comes from a dysfunctional background, as did his grandfather. Gavin also realizes the only one that he should take care of is himself. Can he turn his back on his brother or fix him?

Leslie Kain has written a twisted, high-tension, chilling psychological drama that makes it difficult to put this book down. I would highly recommend this terrifying and suspenseful novel to others.

"With half the family gone, does the dysfunction go down by half?"

"The ghost of past dysfunction remains."

Secrets In The Mirror by debut novelist Leslie Kain is a riveting psychological thriller about mirror twins who are part of what is the definition of codependent dysfunctional family.

Gavin and Devon are alike in every physical way; seeing one another is like looking in the mirror. That's where any similarities end. Gavin is a decent human who would love to be a chef and bring happiness to people with delicious food. Now Devon would like the world to acknowledge that he is the greatest, toughest badass to ever be born. After all, that what his mob boss father tells him everyday.

The father is a vicious criminal and from the time Devon was born a few minutes before Gavin he has anointed Devon his heir to his mob dynasty. Gavin has been declared his brother's keeper. Keep him safe and out of trouble. The problem is Devon suffers from undiagnosed Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He is selfish, cruel, and without empathy for anyone. As Devon becomes more violent, a drug addict, and self destructive, Gavin must find a way to save himself if he can't save his family. Unfortunately, the ties between the twins are knotted so tight and everytime Gavin pulls away, Devon pulls him back in.

It is very impressive that this book is the author's first novel. She has crafted not only a tense psychological thriller but a very in-depth look into the connection of twins, nurture versus nature, mental health and when self preservation needs to kick in. I couldn't stop reading it and it left me very introspective needing to take a look in the mirror on my own self preservation actions.

I received a free copy of this book from the author via #netgalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Secrets In The Mirror by Leslie Kain was such a suspenseful read. This book really hit in a raw place for me, as I could personally connect to the struggle of mental illnesses, and the challenges of dealing with a multigenerational, heavily dysfunctional family. Following Gavin and Devon's journey from childhood to adulthood really gives you a clear understanding of the spiral of addiction, and how it affects your loved ones around you, and the drain caused by codependency. Kain did an amazing job helping these characters practically leap off the page, they were so refreshingly raw and engaging. This is the first book I've ever read involving twins, let alone mirror twins, and I think I've developed a new obsession! I wholeheartedly recommend this book, and this author! This book draws you in and holds you tight.
I loved/hated the dynamic between Gavin and Devin. They are mirror twins, but so different in personality. From birth, Devin was the charismatic golden boy chosen and anointed by the twins' father to carry on the family honor and business. Gavin was the designated caretaker, too sensitive to garner his father's respect.
As Devin slips into deeper and deeper into malignant narcissism, Gavin is struggles to forge his own identity and survive in a toxic family environment.
I don't want to give away too much, but there are so many layers to these characters and their struggles. This story has it all. It's a psychological drama with a dash of murder and mayhem.
The characters are richly developed. Leslie's knowledge of psychology and her clear writing style draw you in.
Honestly, I love Gavin. His arc broke my heart at times then pieced it back together.
I can't recommend this book enough and can't wait for what Leslie has in store next!

Good grief talk about a dysfunctional family ! My heart just broke into millions of pieces for the suffering of Gavin and his mum 🥲

Gavin and Devin are brothers , identical twins to be exact but that’s where the similarity stops Devon is cruel , vindictive , unkind and abusive , he’s definitely inherited dads genes that’s for sure , while there’s clearly something wrong with Devon I can’t help but feel resentful towards him because to a degree he has a choice doesn’t he 🤷‍♀️

Gavin is the total opposite and despite how Devon treats him he often protects him which to me speaks volumes of his character

Mom also got my back up because she could remove her and her boys from their poisonous environment but chooses to stay and don’t get me wrong I have alot of sympathy for women in similar situations because their believe they deserve no better but this woman isn’t one of those

To a degree Gavin looses his identity and Devon turn to drugs and mob involvement which in turn puts everyone in danger and Gavin needs to make a decision to save himself and it’s not the easiest position to be in self preservation or family and this is just a nasty family cycle if one looks into their family history …

A heartbreaking , frightful and brilliant read !
I felt like climbing into to the book on more than one occasion to shake that momma or to just save Gavin …be prepared for this , keep tissues on hand and an ample supply of emotional support snacks 😉

Gavin had a hard life growing up. He has an identical twin brother, Devon, who is favored more by their father. Although they are identical, they are opposites in every way. When they are older Devon gets himself involved with the mob and people start dying. Gavin doesn't want any part of it and flees with his little family to keep them safe. However ot doesn't matter how far he runs, he can't outrun his brother or the mob. Gavin vows that he will save his brother from the destructive path he is on, but will he be successful? Devon is diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and that is how he manipulates poor Gavin. I couldn't imagine having to get away from my sibling for my own well being, it seems unfathomable. I found this book to be a quick read that kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. The characters were well developed and the author wrote this story is such a way that you really feel for the characters, especially the victims. Get ready to go on an emotional ride. I do highly suggest this book, however due to the heavy subject matter talked about being a trigger for some people do read at your own risk.

Thank you @leslie.kain and @suzyapprovedbooktours for letting me be a part of this tour and for the gifted ecopy.

This is the first book for me by this author, and I would definitely check out more by her in the future.

Secrets In The Mirror follows twin brothers Gavin and Devon from teenagers into adulthood, with time jumps between months and years. At times this can be confusing due to the decisions made by each twin which leaves you guessing what happened during those months/years that were missed.

Mirrors deals with mental illness, addiction, and multigenerational dysfunction, that leaves you wanting more with every turn of the page. You all will definitely want to add this to your fall reading.

After driving under the influence and a near-death accident, Devon DiMasi cannot own up to his mistakes. Instead, his narcissistic abuse intensifies, leaving his twin, Gavin, desperate to escape his brother’s clutches. But Gavin’s plans to pursue his dreams are curtailed by the heavy burden of caring for Devon, who constantly berates him, stripping poor Gavin of self-confidence. Worse, their deplorable, mob-involved father believes the sun rises and sets on Devon and forces Gavin to be his caretaker.

As time passes, Devon’s attitude becomes more condescending and his behavior riskier—he’s getting roped in by the lure of drugs and is involved with some nefarious characters, including dangerous individuals with ties to the mafia. Gavin has tried to keep his destructive twin at arm’s length, but he can’t turn his back on this. Devon’s toxic personality has alienated everyone, and if Gavin doesn’t save him, no one will.

“Secrets in the Mirror” by Leslie Kain is an immersive psychological coming-of-age book highlighting the peril of mental illness, particularly the generational type—deeply embedded within families and has mainly gone undiagnosed. Told from the third-person perspective and following Gavin DiMasi, the teen faces an ongoing inner battle between feeling responsible for his twin and being imprisoned by his cruel torment.

The author did an excellent job of depicting how mental illness can evolve from a minor issue into something all-encompassing when drugs and alcohol are in the mix. Of course, when we think about mental disorders, anxiety, depression, and OCD come to mind. Still, the author’s decision to focus on the lesser-known Narcissistic Personality Disorder was commendable. The inflated ego, relentless gaslighting, and feelings of supreme importance were thoroughly highlighted through Devon’s teen years to his young adult years.

The twins’ character development was fascinating, particularly Gavin’s. Devon and his father’s constant belittling deeply affected his self-worth, and I thought he would crumble under verbal abuse. Still, Gavin persevered and sought counsel from a trusted individual who allowed him to see the behavior for what it really was—generational mental trauma. With the mental health crisis facing our world today, I think this information, while fictional, could empower young adults who are facing similar familial dysfunction.

“Secrets in the Mirror” is a gripping psychological book that will appeal to readers who are drawn to books about dysfunctional families, particularly those who suffer from mental illnesses. Further, the characters are well-developed, and the book is perfectly paced, making it worthy of five stars.

"Family. The same people who destroyed Gavin's self-esteem are the ones he must save.
In this multi-award-winning psychological drama about finding self in a dysfunctional family, Secrets In The Mirror grapples with the imperative to save others versus the struggle to save oneself. Gavin tries to salvage his self-esteem from Dad's bullying and from narcissistic abuse by his identical mirror twin, while Mom resists spousal abuse to assert sanity into the clan. But when Devon gets into drugs and trouble with the Mob, people die. Gavin flees far away to protect himself and his new family, but he can't escape his sociopathic brother, or the Mob. Yet inextricable bonds tie him to Devon, and Gavin vows to rescue his twin from his self-destructive path. But he is warned: You can't save anyone until you save yourself."
This book was suspenseful, thrilling, story definitely matches todays world with abuse and drugs and gangs. Like says in the blurb. You can try to save people but you cant save anyone until you save yourself.
This story kept me engaged throughout the whole book, had wtf moments, characters and storyline was great. I give this book 5 stars.

I love a book that gets my stomach tingling and worried for the characters right from the start. The slow-building tension stays throughout the book and keeps you turning the pages with a little bit of dread and a lot of curiosity. The identical twin dynamic of Gavin and Devin set up an instant good versus evil plot that is riveting. This story unpacks the ultimate nature vs nurture debate and shows how a family's past can influence the future.

I love this story. Not because I wrote it, but because of the characters, who kept telling me their stories, revealing more of themselves each time they interrupted my dreams. Each of the main characters traveled their own unique journeys to transformation against multigenerational odds. I "discuss" all that in the "Book Club Questions" at the end, and am eager to hear your thoughts!

Great story! Kept me enthralled the whole time I was reading it. Leslie Kain was a new author to me, and she's definitely an amazing writer. All these characters gave the story so much depth, and at times I found myself forgetting I was reading, because it was all playing out in my head so vividly.

Reminiscent of the some of the works of Jodi Picoult, this is a book that takes a life-defining disorder and explores how this impacts upon an individual and a family.

Gavin and Devon are identical twins, physically the mirror image of each other, but temperamentally opposite. Devon suffers from (and yes, he suffers too, though the suffering is more obviously imposed on others) malignant narcissistic personality disorder. Gavin by contrast is a normal, sensible and kindly individual, who finds himself cast, from infancy into adulthood, as his difficult brother’s lesser foil, supporter, victim and protector.

Behind the relationship between the brothers there lies a damaging three-way dynamic between the twins and their domineering father. Driven by his own ambitions and inadequacies, the father force-feeds one son with a baseless narrative of superiority, whilst projecting his shame and insecurity onto the other. Into this toxic mix is thrown an insipid mother who (for reasons I could never fathom, since she is competent, assertive, insightful and has immense social capital) seems unable to remove either her sons or herself from her husband’s toxic input, with devastating consequences for all of them.

Individuals with malignant narcissistic personality disorder compensate for a fragile sense of self by taking flight into a grandiose, arrogant, delusional identity, devoid of empathy for others and demanding constant admiration and attention. They cannot sustain healthy relationships, and are frequently antisocial, aggressive, sadistic, controlling. The prognosis is poor. Their impact on those around them is typically nightmarish.

Thus it is for Gavin, who has no escape, The experience of growing up with Devon is deeply corrosive to his own identity. In adolescence he is overshadowed and dominated; into adulthood, he struggles to separate, while his brother pursues an ever more pathological quest for domination.

For my tastes there was rather more explicit psychologising than I wanted, particularly in relation to Gavin’s struggle for personal identity - though for anyone struggling with similar issues, this detail might be helpful. There were moments when I felt that the book was really being written as a self-help aid for such a person – complete with one character who seems to have been inserted specifically to provide a therapeutic commentary. I found these passages unwelcome – the novel was doing a perfectly good job at showing me what was happening to the twins at a psychological level; I didn’t want to be told as well.

For me, the book worked best as a psychological thriller. Devon’s psychopathology made him a completely gripping villain, and the sensitive portrayal of Gavin gave a protagonist with whom anyone could identify. Given their unique and beautifully written background, the trajectory of the twins is compelling and plausible, all the way from their seemingly innocent childhood differences to the almost gothic conclusion in adulthood. Throughout the book I wanted to read on, felt gripped by the dilemmas posed. A good read that will stick with me.
