After the Earth was destroyed by ruthless machine intelligences known as the Cold Minds, the remnants of the human race sought refuge among the Hidden Worlds. Now, renegade pilot Linnea Kiaho and her fellow pilot Iain sen Paolo embark on a dangerous journey to EarthÂ's solar system, where humans may have survived. But what they find is a secret so powerful it may save the Hidden Worlds—or shatter them forever.
(From "About the Author" on her website) A lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, Kristin Landon has been reading science fiction since the age of seven, when she discovered H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds in the school library. Love of SF led to a love of science, and she earned a degree in chemistry and worked as a research lab technician for a number of years, before following her talent for writing and editing into a new career in technical publishing. In addition to her novel writing, she works as a freelance copyeditor of medical, scientific, and technical books.
I hate to say it but though I was dying to read this book for about two years, I read the first one and was like whoo hoo, it's depressing but it has promise. Then I read the second one and my excitement waned. Then I started reading the third book and got to page 53 and had to stop.
Why?
I don't often give up on books but the characters hadn't evolved since the first book. They are just sort of cardboard cutouts of the promise that I saw in book one. Add to that, the two main characters, damaged though they are, are supposed to be lovers and in love. I don't see that anymore. The chemistry sort of died and now all they ever do is bicker and abandon each other, whether emotionally or physically.
Of course since I've only read 53 pages (and skipped ahead to the end) I can't judge this book completely fairly but I can judge what I've read as well as the storyline and I have to say I'm very disappointed.
The Cold Minds are ruthless machine intelligence that for years have enslaved humans. They destroyed Earth hundred of years ago and now they're back to take over the remaining humans whom have made their home on the Hidden Worlds. Pilot Linnea Kiaho and Iain sen Paolo are determined to fight with everything they have to stop the Cold Minds, especially when they hear word that some humans might have survived the Cold Minds' takeover on Earth six centuries ago and how they still are somewhat able to live in a ravished world that became the center for these machines.
Both Linnea and Iain embark in a dangerous trip to found these humans, risking their lives to discover how it was possible for these people to survived while pretty much surrounded by the Cold Minds, an unbelievable ruthless race. But what they never thought about was who or what they were going to find in this forgotten and strange new Earth and how the people there would welcome them, as lost brothers or enemies.
The Dark Reaches is the third book in Landon's series, following Linnea and Iain's adventures. These two main characters are more than fellow pilots, they're also lovers and that definitely adds more tension to the story. While the story certainly touches on their relationship, it doesn't take away from the plot line of finding the humans who have survived the Cold Minds. This book is a quick read that will easily suck you in with great descriptions and complex characters. Sci-fi fans will definitely enjoy The Dark Reaches.
While traveling in otherspace, Linnea becomes convinced that another pilot is trying to contact her. She is sure that this pilot is not from the hidden worlds but rather is a refugee in the Earth system. If humans have managed to survive so near the cold minds, they must have discovered something to protect themselves. Linnea feels she must try the long journey to Earth. But will the journey be worth it? [return]This is the 3rd in the series and the plot is slowly unfolding, but I just couldn't really get into this one. It just meandered along. There was not much character development, and the plot was not strong enough to make up for that.
This is the third book in a series of Science Fiction Romances books. The story idea is really good and for that reason I kept reading the series. I rated the books as two stars because the characters never came to life for me. I would have liked to edit the books and put in more dialog.
All three of the books have some of the best covers I have seen in SFR books.
Like Battlestar-Galactica, a grim look at humanity's struggle against machines and each other. Linnea's recklessness and compassion overwhelm Iain's caution and protectiveness.
