Knight in the Petals

Rate this book
A ballerina unsure of what to do next with her art and her life, an ancient sleeping knight awakened from stone by a tipsy kiss.
A ballerina at odds with her art unlocks her destiny with a careless, tipsy kiss. Deep in stone, an ancient sleeping knight awakens. Can he protect his newfound mate, or will their fated pas de deux end in tragedy?

Half-muse Talia lives her life with one pointe shoe in the studio, and one gardening boot in the greenhouse. While dance was once her refuge, she’s beginning to waver. An impulsive, post-performance kiss disrupts her life's tidy choreography with an unexpected Gavotte, a hulking gargoyle-shaped shadow who insists he’s her destined mate.

When a fellow ballerina goes missing and a demigod threatens Talia, she's forced to flee the city for her small-town home. Gavotte insists on following in her wake as a protector, with a promise to keep his hands - and his claws - to himself...as long as Talia does, too.

One of the best monster romances I’ve ever read. No joke. This needs more hype!

Chaotic notes I took while reading lmao…

- He bakes and delivers his baked goods all over town
- He takes a birth control potion
- She’s tall and muscular
- One of her friends uses they/them pronouns (is referred to only as they/them, it is not specifically addressed, it just is)
- Smut begins at 10%
- Instalove but I adored it and didn’t care one bit
- Found family
- Fated mates
- I would sell my soul for a book about Juno and her poltergeist man

4.5?? 4.75??

Ngl, I skimmed all the ballet parts/lingo because I personally couldn't care less, but the overall vibes??? Immaculate. Gavotte supremacy.

A fun, cozy, spicy, and sometimes spooky read. Inclusive language and a fun world (would *love* a Hector/Juno story). Finished in one sitting, so I feel like that speaks for itself. Love the explicit and continued consent between the main characters. Sometimes the character voice/dialogue language felt inconsistent and would throw me out of a scene (usually modern verbiage or very specifically the multiple uses of the word "randy." I'm sorry but I just see and hear Austin Powers; I can't help it.)

[Potential spoilers!!]
Wish it had some CWs on the inside pages for things like discussions of parental loss/death (father), drowning, etc.

As someone who had confusing feelings for Goliath from the cartoon Gargoyles and who loves ballet, right up my alley. Makes you crave bread though, fair warning.

This kept my attention during my Baldur’s Gate 3 hyperfixation (which is still going on, jsyk). That says a LOT about this sweet, cozy, spicy book.

This book was perfection. it’s hard not to fall in love with Gavotte. This book definitely needs more hype and following! I couldn’t help but fall in love with it. It was hard not to fall for Gavotte.

I’d love to see more of this world. Especially would die for a book about Juno and the poltergeist man.

Nostalgia for dancers, with spice

Ballet and gargoyles sold me on this story. An amalgamation of dance, music, folklore, and monster romance. If it had a closer editor look I think it would have been much more engaging. Things like fully describing what happens in class and how to get ready to dance is fun to read from someone with experience but may lose a person wanting just a quick spicy gargoyle read (spicy gargoyle is there, definitely read it!). For the majority of the book, it felt more like a cozy monster romance two people trying to navigate with and around each other, the problem/mystery big bad felt like a b-plot but was suspenseful in the end.

It is urban fantasy-like, a world parallel to humans with magic and magical creatures but with cell phones. Any sort of technology (ignoring the ballet supplies) mentioned would actually throw me out of the story and then I would remember the setting.

As a former ballet dancer it drew me in with it's technicality and creativity. I enjoyed getting that ballet connection which is decently hard to find, especially in monster romance. And yes it is spicy, with an old fashioned gargoyle just wanting to please his ballerina.

*CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS

4⭐️/ 4🌶️

A ballerina finally getting the chance at center stage, a night to remember, and it was everything and more that Talia could have ever hoped for. Enjoying the aftermath of her performance in the ballet, Talia was drinking the night away, and dancing to her hearts content on the rooftops of the theatre, when suddenly she noticed one of the gargoyle statues nearby her. Seemingly intrigued by the beauty of the statue, a drunken kiss, and ta-da, Talia unknowingly awoke the gargoyle! Now, Talia discovered that she and Gavotte were SURPRISE FATED MATES! With the new revelation, and juggling the responsibilities of being a ballerina, and apparently new danger coming for Talia, she was in for quite a new turn in her life.

When I had heard of this story, I wasn’t sure what the story would entail necessarily other than it being a romance between a ballerina and a gargoyle. As I started reading, it became clear that Talia was part Muse, due to her mother being one of the Muses. In the world this story was set in, magical/ supernatural creatures were normal, but lived in their own areas apart from the humans which I thought was cool. Additional, Talia’s friends and other characters within the theatre were different kinds of creatures so, it was normalized that each individual had powers or an interesting parentage. Talia had the ability to grow flowers, especially when her emotions were heightened was when they came out. Talia was a lovely dancer and it was clear she put a lot of effort into learning new techniques for her dancing, and it was her whole world.

When Gavotte came into the picture, it was a whole new world that Talia wasn’t expecting when she drunkenly kissed the gargoyle statue. The idea that this handsome gargoyle was actually her fated mate blew Talia’s mind, and while she couldn’t deny the instantaneous attraction she felt towards Gavotte, she wasn’t ready to become his mate. With all that was going on in Talia’s mind in how she felt about Gavotte, she couldn’t help the desire she felt whenever he was near her. Plus, as much as Gavotte was wholeheartedly devoted and attracted to Talia, he was also quite the gentleman in trying to honor her wishes in not wanting to be mates, but “friends” instead. Side note, I found it a bit amusing now Talia agreed to be Gavotte’s friend and yet not soon after she and Gavotte had a spicy moment in her bedroom! Which I will say, was hot! There was no denying that Talia wanted Gavotte, but it was also the matter that she didn’t fully know him completely that played a part in her hesitation to officially becoming his mate.

I really loved the relationship between Talia and Gavotte. I went into this book purely with no idea what I was getting myself into, and was surprised by how much I really loved the sweet, loving connection that Talia and Gavotte had together. Sure, I was also curious to see how the monster smut would play out (which by the way was great!) but the romance itself was endearing especially the way Gavotte wholeheartedly adored Talia and supported her in every way possible. From protecting Talia from the danger lurking around her to helping her through her burn out from dance, rediscovering her love of dance by teaching students of her own, and Gavotte helping in even more ways than that ones I just listed. Gavotte may have been use to centuries as a gargoyle Sentinel, but he was just as kindhearted and loving when it came to Talia. I did not expect to find myself reading about a budding romance between two individuals who also happened to be fated mates, but I was proven wrong, thankfully.

Overall, this was an entertaining and enjoyable story to read! A monster romance that involved fated mates, a handsome gargoyle who was utterly obsessed and caring for his mate, and an independent, artistic ballerina who found her way to love. I actually liked that the story had a little bit of everything from the elements of danger from Talia’s aunt trying to take her/ her powers, to the lighthearted nature of the small village where Talia is from, and surprisingly the spice that was HOT curtesy of Gavotte being a dirty talker and a bit of a soft Dom, which I wasn’t expecting! A whole lot of this story took me by surprise in the best way possible. I went into this book expecting just a young woman falling in love with a gargoyle, but it was more than that. I loved seeing the sense of community come together especially at the end seeing Talia settled in her life alongside Gavotte, it gave me small town wholesome vibes! Gavotte was the perfect combination of sweet, protective, and supportive. In terms of monster romances, I definitely enjoyed this and it had a little bit of everything that made the story interesting and fun for me to read!

This book was overall a sweet, though slightly ill-paced story. The romance was definitely an instalove/fated mates situation, the speed of their relationship based on that is breakneck, although the author does try to temper it by having the FMC feign resistance to the deeper meaning of their relationship at first. The side characters could have been more developed, I was especially interested in the witch BFF and the Poltergeist and would read a book about their relationship. The tension started off good, but then sputtered for a minute to focus on the romance, and then the main storyline that focused on the FMC's family and magical powers ramped back up with a vengeance, with the climax feeling abrupt even though the author did try to build it up over the story. I think because the story itself is so short, it felt like the author tried to condense a conflict that could have done with more drawing out. Due to the relation of the big bad to the FMC, I didn't really understand the motivations of the villain of the story, although the author does try to explain it away as an immortal being getting bored and basically picking a fight just because she could, it didn't feel like that was enough of a motivation, making the tension fall a bit flat even at the climax.

There were some spelling/grammar errors throughout the story, along with just some awkward sentence structure. I think the MMC's name being Gavotte, a term for a sort of French dance, was too on the nose, especially because he's supposed to be Estonian, so it doesn't make much sense to me why his name would be French, let alone the name of a dance, this is obviously an attempted nudge at the fact that dance (specifically ballet) is a major part of the FMC's storyline, although it ends up being more of a shove than a nudge, especially when the subject of dance is already 70% of what the FMC thinks about/does.

Spicy scenes were a good combination of sweet/slightly rough, the author definitely tries to dabble in kink-ish situations (dom/sub), but is very light-handed with it, would recommend to someone who loves dance, loves instalove, or loves gargoyles.

i'm going to be honest with you, this was chaotic. that is neither good nor bad, just a statement of fact. 3/5 stars

was it entertaining?
i do believe so. plot was there, silly little tropes were there, monster man was there. there was intrigue, if a little too easily figure out at the beginning, which was exciting. however, we know nothing about the villain, her motivations, her connection to the plot -- she just appears. additionally, the secondary characters are like chess pieces -- static, in the background, until they're moved in and out of place as needed. even the deceased or absent characters, despite constant internal dialogue about their importance, just float aimlessly until they're yanked into place and then set adrift again. 3/5

was it enjoyable?
eh. it was...fine, i suppose. like i said, a lot of the characters just float on the periphery in ways that make their periodic inclusion feel jarring. the plot also seems to move in jerks and fits -- it's not a smooth progression. the gargoyle wakes, they fuck, and then he disappears into the background. there's intrigue in the ballet and then it's never heard from again. she has a roommate, and then she disappears for weeks, and then she's back. it felt like i had to remember who a character was every time they're back on the page again. 2/5

was it well written?
nothing stands out that i can remember. 5/5

The MMC in this book is EVERYTHING!

My ovaries just imploded...

I have legit died and gone to ecstasy, forget heaven because this monster is straight up Sinful!
I can't even 🥴, I can't find the words. My ovaries are in shreds, my brain is offline, and I'm so hungry I'm dying.

He cooks
He fixes things
He is a regular himbo
But in the bedroom.... f**k me good this male is EVERYTHING!

I'm so beyond help at this point but I do not care in the slightest. I won't spoil anything more here but I am not above begging anyone who reads this post to check this book out. I need someone to join me in this firey pit of sinful delight because this male's mouth is a one way ticket.🔥🔥🔥🔥

-I wasn’t really into this until past 50% but then I really enjoyed it

-Once they got to the house I enjoyed their dynamic much more and even the spicy scenes were more compelling

-For some reason I thought this was going to be a human and gargoyle and then there would be a whole thing about having to believe that gargoyles were real in the beginning but it is set in an earth in which supernatural beings exist and live alongside humans.

-Gavotte is really sweet and I wish I could eat all of his freshly baked goods

-I barely remember the Gargoyles show but now I want to watch it haha

Why did I ever procrastinate reading this?!?! It is SO SO SO SO GOOD.

I LOVE THE WRITING STYLE. So beautiful and succinct !!! Like the imagery is soooooo good. I loved all the floral imagery and the forest and everything.

I really wished we got to see more of the lore and back story develop, I found it to be very interesting!!! Ugh and I wanted to see a little bit more of the fighting/battling scenes cuz the momentum WAS THERE. IT WAS SO GOOD BUT IT FINISHED SOOO FAST!!!!

I NEED TO SEE MORE FROM ALL THE SIDE CHARACTERS. CUZ THIS IS JUST SOOOOO GOOOOOOD.

4.5/5 but closer to 4. I wanted to see more battle scenes !!!!

This book was just fine, and cute. The main story plot felt like a hallmark movie that takes the hard-working career woman and sends her back home and suddenly she wants to be a homemaker. However, there's soft dom knight Gargoyles and a really bored immortal aunt who is NOT invited to Thanksgiving. The spice was fun, but it took a minute in between dance lessons. I won't lie, I know that dance was a huge part of this book, but the world outside of the studio was so much more interesting. Like the relationship with the witch and the poltergeist, omg I want more of them!

im giving it three stars because of gavotte, he was truly the most dreamiest character i've ever read. otherwise this would be a two star book. talia....oof. she was really really frustrating. i hated how she lead him on. like im sorry but if a handsome, kind, dreamy gargoyle told me i was his mate, i would NOT hesitate. the plot of the story seem to drag on and on and i skimmed A LOT because it was honestly really boring. but gavotte really kept me entertained <3

If this could have been made into a 2-3 book series, that would have been way cooler. Overall this book wasn’t bad, it ok. I liked the characters, they were cute. But the over sweet, consent at every single turn of their sexual moments had me rolling my eyes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for consent lol but this was just too much. Wish it was longer cause it had so much potential for more world building.

I loved the idea of this book with a ballerina awaking a gargoyle with a kiss and becoming fated mates, but the heroine was not to my taste. Minus 2 full stars just for her, but I liked her muse powers of making flowers grow when she dances and I loved her witch friend juno.

Also felt kind of random that the H became a baker and as a job starting selling his bread and flying around town delivering them? Like, what?

Himbo gargoyle baker. That's all you need to know, really. Gavotte is a DELIGHT and Talia was so refreshing after reading lots of "too stupid to live" heronies. This book did take me forever to read, but that was all my fault. I started while I was in a book hangover. Bad choice.

My only real beef is that vulva kept getting called "furls" and that's a hard no for me. 🤣

DNF at 63%.

I wanted so badly to be caught all up in this book... but it just didn't vibe for me.

Gavotte is perfection 😍🫠 and the reason I stuck around for so long. We love a man who is strong, sexy, prioritizes consent, maintains boundaries, AND makes us baked goods. Yasss👏👏👏

I may come back to this later, but I am shelving it for now.

I have read 212 books this year. This might have been my favorite one to date. The writing is absolutely dreamy and luscious. The spice is just right. Can we give some love for a 30-year-old protagonist?! HUGE FAN. This author is officially added to my “I will instantly read anything you create” list.

This book was beautiful. The writing was lush and captivating. Gavotte is made out of pure husband material. The plot felt tangible and meaningful. The way Talia worked with her art, how she had to try and find peace with burnout and find herself again. How she connected to the community and let her dreams shift. Everything about this book was beautiful, stunning, and wonderful.

I adored this book and I can't wait to read more from this author!

Very sweet and cute story with lovable characters and a decent plot. The middle of the story got a little slow, but it picked up at the end and was a satisfying conclusion. Some of the language was odd and there were minor grammatical errors. The spice was good but the dirty talk was AMAZING- best part of the book

A sweet story set in a fascinating world.

The main characters were fun and so were the secondary ones. I liked the world the book was set in a lot too. I’d love to read more stories set in it.
