In a galaxy where the last rare resource is unique humans, Yaniqui knows her ability to heal is priceless. She lives in hiding on a dry labor planet, mourning the loss of her engagement to Hloban, the man she loved.
Yaniqui is discovered when she heals an injured migrant worker and word of her abilities travels all the way to Earth, where Hloban lives – with his wife. He hasn't seen Yaniqui since childhood, but that doesn't stop him from immediately assembling a rescue party.
As the estranged, would-be-lovers are pulled across the stars, the surprising involvement of the small planet becomes undeniable. An Indigenous woman living in the environmentally fractured United States, an expelled student from an elite galactic university, and an alien who thinks only in the present tense discover Earth’s enigmatic role in the interstellar trafficking trade.
As Yaniqui and her unlikely companions fight for her freedom, she must ask: even if she escapes, can she ever truly be safe in this universe?
A master at worldbuilding, Zornow has created a galaxy inhabited by unique races and individuals that demonstrate how we can be worlds apart and yet remain tightly entwined. This deep dive into a multiplanetary existence is a fascinating tale of displaced people from all walks of life, each of them searching for their rightful place in the galaxy. Sci-fi readers will love it!
Dangerous to Heal is the first book of the Displacement Duology science-fiction series by Rebecca M. Zornow—a Wisconsin-based author, Lawrence University graduate and former Peace Corps volunteer 💖👏🏼.
This book was written over the span of 10 years—and it was worth the wait! The intricacy of details and creativity in the world building and character development truly makes it special. I savored every chapter with each of the six character perspectives and didn’t want the story to end, even though I knew there was a second book, “Negotiated Fate.”
Excellent writing and great storytelling. For effort alone, this novel gets 5 stars. I’m rooting for each of these characters and hope to see them all in the same place at the same time in book two (which I couldn’t help but stay awake to read the prologue)!
Dangerous to Heal is a story about the future. It’s about a time when Earth reaches out to the galactic community, and is met with wonder and opportunity, but also unexpected challenges.
The characters are vibrant and wholly unique. As much as their journeys are independent, they are also intimately connected. These characters help us see the beauty woven deep beneath our own struggles. It’s a story that is wildly diverse, yet distinctly personal.
As much as Dangerous to Heal is a look at lives far beyond our own, it’s a reminder that human (and humanoid!) experiences are colored by the same searches for meaning, longings for love, fights for freedom, and demands for a better future.
Dangerous to Heal, by Rebecca M. Zornow, is an action-packed, sci-fi novel full of creative worlds and characters that leap off the page. From humanoids to animoids, you'll dive into the intersecting stories of several big-hearted protagonists trying to navigate an unjust galaxy. The author does a fantastic job immersing you into the characters' lives. You'll find yourself cheering on their victories and cursing at their foes. I also love how the author throws in the occasional Midwest flavor with some of the Earthlings. Pick up this novel to enjoy an imaginative sci-fi journey with humor, action, and romance.
Dangerous to Heal features a diverse cast of characters desperate to find their place in a galaxy riven by conflict and disaster. Leading the narrative is Yaniqui, a young refugee believing herself among the last of her species, possessed of an inherent trait which, if discovered, threatens to array against her the full might of a ruthless interplanetary monopoly, one not above the wholesale trade of sentient freight.
Zornow's grand space opera, the first in a coming duology, draws from, among other experiences, the author's time working for the Peace Corps in Swaziland.
From the first page to the last I was hooked on this story. This future inter-planetary world is fascinating and full of colourful well-crafted characters, who, struggling with issues of displacement, isolation and discrimination still find love and empathy in the strangest of places. It's a gripping must-read.
Dangerous to Heal (The Displacement Duology #1) is an absolute must read. It will take you to adventures in the unknown with characters and their adventures that you will want to keep following. And, you will get to pick up on them in the next book, (The Displacement Duology #2) which will be released later this year. I can't wait for it!!!!
I devoured Dangerous to Heal! It's futuristic sci fi with a wide range of characters including an alien species who can heal. There were many character threads that came together. Zornow's writing is detailed and flows well. It's immersive and will suck you in. Greatly enjoyed and onto book 2.
