Checking It Twice

Will confessing his deepest secret to his best friend ruin their friendship?

Sutter Thompson has spent a goodly part of his life living a lie.

That lie led him to marry a woman he didn’t love as he should while he struggled to be all that his family wanted him to be. Finally, after the birth of his son Zachary, Sutter came to see that he needed to live a life of truth. Not just for himself, but for Zach as well. The truth included coming out at forty, getting divorced while his son was an infant, and trying to readjust to being who he was born to be.

Throughout all the turmoil, Sutter’s best friend, Watley McCutcheon, stood by his side. Watley understood how difficult breaking free could be. He had done it many years ago when they were still on the same college hockey team. Sutter always admired Wat’s bravery. He also admired his best friend for many other things…his smile, his laugh, his adoration of his son, Adam, and his caring heart. Now that Watley is single again, Sutter is hoping he can unlock the final secret he’s been carrying in his heart…he has and always will love Watley.

He’d not planned to do so at the youth hockey awards, but then again, he hadn’t expected an avalanche to strand him, Watley, their sons, and several of the boys’ teammates in a cozy Colorado inn either. Maybe it’s the romantic atmosphere or the sudden realization that life is too short to harbor such strong feelings forever, but he’s ready to declare his feelings to Watley. Can they step out of the friend zone and into a romance, or will Sutter’s heartfelt admission destroy years of brotherly affection?

Checking it Twice (A Snowed Inn Novella) is a friends-to-lovers gay romance with plenty of snow, a heaping helping of romance, snowball fights, terrible dad jokes, pop culture references out the wazoo, and a joyous happy ending.

I'm not feeling it.
The writing is choppy.
While that writing style was very fitting for the Point Shot Trilogy, here it clashes with the sweet storyline.

I pushed through until the MCs confessed they had both been in love for 30 years with one another (45%), afterwards nothing really happened beside them talking some more about it, kissing and confessing their love to their children. Now that a friend, who is over the moon for them finally being an item, wants to plan dates, I'm out.
Not interested enough to continue.

Two more things, then I'll be quiet:
-the MCs were both 51 and I had loved that fact (before starting the book), it's so rare to read about MCs around my age.
The constant moaning about back pain, knee pain and general moaning about being old was OTT, though. Plus they only ever talked about music and movies from the 1980s as if time had stopped there. There were music and movies to talk about in the following 30 years too!
-the continuos jabs Sutter made in his mind against his ex wife, who he had left 2 months after their child's birth because he decided to come out as gay, after being in the closet until 40, marking her as some kind of evil now that he could be with the love of his life, didn't sit well with me.

This is a bright and hope filled romance, with two older men !
In this series, each story can stand alone, and read in any order.
Both men are 52, Watley and Sutter were BFFs in college. Each is single, and divorced with one son.
Watley, curly brown hair with a bit of silver, divorced from Paul, has his son, Adam, who plays in a junior ice hockey league.
Sutter, 6'4" muscled and blue eyed (cover), was married to a woman and "came out" at 40. His son is Zachary in the same Hockey league. Both boys are 10.

They become snowed in at the League Awards weekend before Christmas, and the proximity brings out stories, fun and games, and serious talks, plus feelings.

Amidst the snowballs, Dad jokes, and the awards, we find out if their second chance at happiness can the theirs.

It's sweet, funny, and full of heart.
ENJOY !

I was fairly interested in this book because both MCs are around my age, just entering their 50s. Yet the author made it a point, time and again, for these two guys to moan about how old they were. Creaky joints, stiff legs, being called "super old" by their kids, it was just too much. I realize people age differently and not everyone is active like I am, but these guys were youth league hockey coaches yet they acted like they needed to hang out at the local retirement home.

Additionally, they both continuously, and I do mean CONTINUOUSLY make pop culture references from the 1980s. We get it! But they seem stuck in the past without a proper exit ramp to the 21st century and it got so damn old in such a short book.

The actual "romance" wasn't bad and Locey writes well. I just didn't like reading about a couple of moaners and whiners who I wouldn't want to hang out in real life with.

Not the most "active" plot, but heartwarming none the less. I liked it overall, and while I know "drama" and "holiday romance" don't really overlap, I do wish we'd had a bit more drama or something

So, this is a short novella about best friends, who - finally - take the opportunity to confess their love for each other
Or at least that was what I expected but not entirely what I got.

For me it was more a story about a hockey coach and his team who get snowed in .... and yes, by the way, he and his best friend finally confess their love.

I missed the tension and click between Sutter and Wat but I loved both men and their sons.

So, all in all it wasa nice story, which I enjoyed.

I liked it - it was the first of the series I have read and I'm looking forward to the rest
This was a nice easy read about two lifelong friends stuck in a hotel together with their kids after an avalanche strands them and their junior hockey team. The only angst really came from Sutter's internal struggle.

I liked both the main characters. I can’t explain it but I felt Sutter did a little bit of a 360 at one point. For the first part of the book he was all set to make a move on Wat and admit his feelings and then when it happened he changed, lost all confidence and Wat was the one pushing the relationship forward and pushing Sutter into admitting how he felt.

The kids were a good foil here. They weren’t forgotten and both guys still had to interact and take care of their boys, the boys also made so they were unable to just jump into bed together and move the relationship forward that way, talking was required. The two boys were portrayed well and for a while I thought Sutter’s ex-wife was going to be the annoying female but she came good once we actually got to hear the dialogue between her and Sutter. She was disappointed that her son wasn’t going to be home but also handled it well.

Another great read from the “Snowed Inn” series. What thrilled me while reading this particular story was the fact that the two MCs are men in their 50’s! Not enough stories about guys my age! I love how this story and the other ones in the series throws in tidbits such as the avalanche, the haunted elevator, the repurposed wedding cake, and such which makes it a treat knowing it was in the other books as well! This particular story focuses on the children hockey teams which is the main theme that takes place at the Rainbow Inn.

Sutter, a 50’s father of Zachary who is on the hockey team volunteered along with his best friend, Watley, another 50’s father of Adam who happens to be Zachary’s best friend to drive their team to the Rainbow Inn that was hosting the hockey league awards event. Unbeknownst to both Sutter and Watley, they had been crushing on each other for way too long! They had to share a room with two twin beds since the kids were paired to bunk in the other rooms in the cabin. While they were there, the inn was cut off from the world via an avalanche. That forced them to figure out how to entertain the kids and their feelings for each others. That’s where I’m going to stop and have you pick up the book to read to find out what happens at the end!

Independent reviewer for Gay Romance Reviews, I was gifted my copy of this book.

It's early November right now, and this is only my second Christmas book this year. And this and that book have set the bar so freaking high, they are gonna be hard to beat!

Because I loved this book! It's so freaking cute and warm and fuzzies and so full of love and family and oh!!

Sutter has crushed on his best friend, Watley, for the better part of his adult life. And now Watley is single again, Sutter wants to tell him. He just never expected to do it snowed in, with their boys in tow.

I cannot, in all honesty, fault this wonderful tale of love held over a long time coming good. Well I can, but I won't 🤪

Sutter and Watley, when they finally admit to these feelings that they BOTH had for so darn long, jump on the ice, with both skates on, and go with it.

And those boys?? Adam is Watley's son and Zach us Sutter's. Those boys are so darn excited about being brothers cos their dad's got together! Sutter's ex-wife was like, 'well finally' and I loved that she was happy for him.

It's wonderfully written, with the right amount of love and smexy times, and Christmas and preteen boys and nosey, well meaning friends thrown in.

I loved it, I really did!

This is a low-angst, slow-burn romance between best friends who finally become lovers. Sutter and Watley have known each other for 30+ years, since they were college roommates, and they've each fantasized about being more to their best friend. Sutter identified as straight while in college and married his wife soon after. Watley dated various men and eventually married one. Now, both men are divorced and Sutter is out of the closet. Since they are traveling with a group of young hockey teammates, including their two sons, privacy is at a premium. Can these two men get their timing right this time to find their HEA? This book is generally light-hearted, easy, and eventually passionate.

I am in love with Wat and Sutter!
Their story is of a romance that has been simmering for 30 years, unrequited or so they thought.
I love all the 80's references as I myself, am an 80's gal.
It was a long road with hardships, hiding, coming out, and relationships doomed because they were not with their true loves.
Throw in rowdy teams of young hockey players and you have some hilarious shenanigans happening!
Loved every part of this story.
It connects subtly to Rj Scott's Stop the Wedding.
5/5 ❤️& 🏒

Darum geht’s:

Meine Meinung dazu gibt’s hier

This was a really sweet, slow burn, no angst, friends to lovers, single dad story. It was refreshing to see older MCs who are already established in their lives. I also liked how realistic it felt woth the kids on the trip. Just because it's a romance didn't mean the 10 year olds suddenly left them alone or were out of the story. If you're in the mood for a light story with lots of 1980s references, this is the one for you.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily gave my honest review.

I know forced proximity tropes aren't for everyone, especially since Covid but I've always enjoyed a well written one or what I like to call "tale of necessity" or "fate at work". There is always a cloud of "will it last once the necessity is gone" hanging over the heads of those involved brut lets face it, there are "what ifs" hovering over everyone's head at some point or another. I enjoy this trope because it can make some who might never get a chance to say two words to each other really get to know the other. Be honest, communication and seeing one deal with the unexpected, can be key to lasting love.

Now that I've said that, Checking it Twice, though forced proximity gives Sutter and Watley the opportunity to face what is in the room, is actually more of a friends to lovers trope as they've been best buds since college. Just because they probably know all the nitty gritty of each other's psyche doesn't mean they've been completely open about everything and the avalanche near The Retreat forces them to face a few truths. Kids and fellow-trapped hockey parents play a hand in it as well.

I don't want to spoil anything but we know VL Locey and the whole holiday tale genre is all about the HEA so it's no secret where the men will end up but the how they get there is where all the fun lies. I refuse to spoil your fun. I will say that one thing I loved the most is how the kids act and react. I have found too many kids in entertainment(book, tv shows, movies) fall into one of two categories: super sickly sweet or spoiled obnoxious brats so when I come across kids in my readings(or viewings) that are simply "normal"(I hate that word because what is "normal" but I can't think of a better one right now) with some sweetness and a hint of bratty potential but mostly "I just want to see you happy, dad. When can we eat?", I not only remember them but need to shine a spotlight on them. So kudos to VL Locey for the "normal" little boy behavior ;).

So to reiterate in much more brevity: Checking it Twice is brilliant holiday fun that will make you smile and leave said smile on your face for hours afterwards. Oh and, men caring for kids? Yummy to the Nth degree!

One last series note: Snowed Inn is a multi-author series of standalones with the only real follow thru being the avalanche that traps the main characters at The Retreat. The entries can be read in any order although if I'm completely honest I'm glad I read RJ Scott's Stop the Wedding first simply because there are the occasional wedding(or non-wedding) comments, none of which really effect or play a role in any of the other entries but I was glad I knew what they meant having read Wedding first. But that's more a personal preference of mine than an actually need to know scenario. I still have a couple of entries to read but so far they are all topnotch.

It's that time of year, when all the sweet Christmas/winter romances come out and I am here for it, eagerly waiting to add to my book pile! Even as an Aussie, I am sometimes a sucker for a cold (in temperature only!) winter wonderland romance.

I always look forward to a new V.L. Locey book - you often get ice hockey, sweet romance, beautiful relationships - which is exactly what I got when I had the opportunity to read the ARC of her latest Christmas novella, Checking it Twice.

I didn't know wholly what to expect when I started reading Checking it Twice. Well, I knew what to expect. After all, I did read the blurb before jumping at the chance of devouring this book. I saw that this involved friends to lovers, stuck together in isolation and ice hockey.

To put it simply, I was hooked. But I don't think I truly appreciated exactly what it was going to be until I got into the story. I think I underestimated how much I appreciated that this is a very mature romance (despite being significantly younger than the couple in question they were easy to relate to), that is the sweet story of two middle aged best friends giving into their deeper feelings for each other.

The story is told from the POV of Sutter Thompson. He has been divorced for a number of years, after realising that he could no longer live a lie. He came out of the closet (I would say in his late 30s or early 40s) and rebuilt his life around co-parenting his son with his ex-wife. Sutter's best friend since college is the complete opposite. Watley McCutcheon has been out of the closet for a significant part of his life. He too has a son and is divorced from his ex-husband and is a single dad.

Now, Sutter and Watley are stranded with their sons (about 10-ish?), as well as other young hockey players and their parents, at an isolated resort where there was going to be some sort of awards and celebration for the kids hockey program. With two intelligent sons, both men being very available for romance, time and being in close proximity to each other the ingredients are there for Sutter and Watley to make a grab for a happily ever after.

I have so much love for many of V.L. Locey's novels and novellas, Checking it Twice is no exception. I would say my rating is probably closer to a 4.5/5, but alas, I cannot do a half star.

A heartwarming holiday second chance at love story

Rating: 4🌈

Checking It Twice is a heartwarming holiday story about two long time friends getting their second chance at love in their fifties.

One of the wonderful Snowed Inn collection featuring multiple authors, much like the rest, it includes The Retreat Inn, a Colorado mountain resort also nicknamed The Rainbow Inn, a avalanche that cuts off the Inn and it’s inhabitants for a prolonged stay, and all the couples and events from all the stories.

Sutter Thompson, his longtime friend and coworker at Red Pine U, Watley, are driving a group of young boys for a regional hockey medal presentation being held at the Inn. Among the boys up for hockey honors is their sons. Sutter’s boy Zachary with his ex wife , and Watley ‘s son, Adam with his ex husband. The boys are best friends as well.

Locey’s men have a complicated past history. A deeply closeted Sutter decided to come out after his child was born. But he’s never revealed his last hidden truth. He’s always loved Watley.

Checking It Twice gives the reader a delightful depiction of a number of types of heartfelt relationships. Those of realistic loving father/son dynamics, especially as seen between both sets of parents and sons. You get the funny, too real, close knit relationship that happens with team members and their coaches (hurting stomachs, road trips, bunk bed assignments). Then there’s the one the men themselves have waited close to thirty years for. Their own romance.

It’s a halting , stumbling path full of slow revelations, first kisses, and , passion at last fulfilled. The men with their aches, trick knees, aged playlist, and glimpses of grey , are charming and engaging. It was a real joy to read their romance.

This collection is turning out to be a great way to dive into my holiday books, and I’m definitely recommending Checking It Twice as a heartwarming HEA!

I really like the premise of this book, so I really wanted to like it but sadly this one is a bit of a miss for me. I’m usually easily entertained and not too picky about stuff but this one had a couple of things that bugged me just enough to take away from my enjoyment.

1. The MC is in his 50’s, which is great, I love me some silver foxes finding love, but he was constantly going on about how his back was hurting and his knees were cracking and it honestly got to the point of being annoying. They’re 50, not 70..(and yes, I get that they played Hockey and it’s hard on your body, but not THAT hard).

2. Once we made it to the romance part it just got awkward, the dialogue during the intimate scenes was honestly totally cringy. (I mean spunk? Really? I also can’t stand it when authors use the term ‘prick’. I don’t know if it’s just me but I have never, in my 44 years of life, heard a male call his bits a prick. I get we’re probably trying to avoid repeating the same words over but.. ugh)

3. The 80’s pop culture references. It was fun for the first couple of chapters, but then, just as with the constant aches and pains, it started to get annoying.. like the author wanted to remind us constantly that these guys are ‘old’.. just made me roll my eyes at the end..

I liked the premise, the MC’s were sweet, the kids fun but yeah, I’m probably not going to be checking out more of the Author’s work anytime soon. Sorry.

I’m already a fan of this author, and I love Christmas stories. Plus having the characters snowed in is a fun backdrop for a best friends to lovers romance. One of the highlights of this story for me was the friendship between Sutter and Watley, and how everyone already thinks they’re together.

I enjoy stories with older MCs with life experience, and especially if they are solo dads. I loved the family feel of this story, and the relationship between the MCs and their kids. Sutter and Watley are great with the hockey players in their care for their longer than anticipated stay in the snow. I liked the realism of a trip away with kids and how they keep getting interrupted but put the kids’ needs first.

The supporting cast are great. I particularly loved Colleen and her excitement about their romance. She was also sweet in arranging dates for them, and making sure they had some alone time. I also enjoyed the references to other stories in this shared world, and am looking forward to reading them too.

This is a sweet read with likeable characters, and dad jokes. I wanted them to get their HEA as soon as I started reading. I always enjoy a glimpse into the future of a HEA too.

Watley and Sutter’s story is delightful. Best friends since college, they and their sons are snowed in at a Colorado hotel. After much longing for each other, the magic of The Retreat and the winter wonderland does its thing.

I loved that the characters are older (early 50’S) and Locey does not shy away from the hazards of getting older. From creaky joints, to added weight, to longer refractory periods, the characters manage it all with good humour.

Especially because this book centres around a small hockey awards ceremony, I was thrown for several moments by the “scout’s cabin” trying to figure out how hockey scouts fit into the whole retreat experience. Once I finally understood that it was the Boy Scouts (as they used to be known), it all made more sense.

Otherwise I certainly felt sympathy for the MCs trying to occupy five young boys with no wifi for days on end. Sometimes I was exhausted just reading about all their activities.

At the end of the day, the romance is why you pick up a Locey book and she did not disappoint. With oodles of emotion, a tangible connection and smoking hot times, this book would be a winner even without the idyllic setting (private hot spring pools anyone?)

5 stars.

Another great addition to the Snowed Inn series.

This was a short and sweet story of two men who have been secretly in love with each other for years, but due to circumstances never had the chance of being together. They've know each other for decades, were roommates in school and had an immediate attraction since day one.

We have Sutter, who pretended to be straight for years, even got married and lived life as best as he could. He did love his wife but not as it should have been, so when he son was born he decided to start being honest and told his wife that he was gay and that he wanted a divorce. His wife of course didn't take this news very well, but luckily his relationship with his son never suffered from it.

On the other hand we've got Watley, coach in the same school as Sutter. Always been openly out, married but divorced and also has a son of the same age as Sutter.

When they are at the Holliday Inn for an award ceremony, they end up stranded there due to an avalanche that has blocked the roads. Tension between the two MC's grow and they finally give in to their feelings.

This was a real sweet story happening just a few days before Christmas, so it's bound to bring in Christmas spirits.

This is such a lovely romance between best friends, Sutter and Watley. Friends for over thirty years, both divorced with one son each though Sutter only came out when his son was born and knew he had to show his son to be your true self.
They end up snowed in whilst with a few kids from their hockey team at an awards weekend, getting more than they bargained for but in the best way. Never hinted that they like each other until Colleen, one of the other parents, makes a comment and then there's no denying what is clearly felt by both men. It's adorable to read as they allow their true feelings to be shown and snatch moments for each other. Well, time provided by Colleen who is a true romantic.
It's a bit of a slow burner that is really well written, first showing their relationship as best friends and fathers, then allowing them to show each other their true feelings and attraction. A Christmas miracle for them both as they finally get everything they've wanted. A great addition to the series and really enjoyable to read this no angst romance.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Checking it Twice is a wonderful best-friends-to-lovers story with both MC’s over fifty-years-old. The story is told in first-person POV by Sutter Thompson. The blurb is very detailed so I’m just going to say how much I enjoyed reading this story.

It’s a great slow-burn romance with the sexy stuff not happening until the end. That’s pretty much what I expected since the two MC’s were chaperoning young hockey players. Sutter and Watley get a little help from other chaperones after they are all stuck at the inn where they were staying for an award ceremony. An avalanche made the road impassible so they have to make the best of things and have Christmas where they are.

This was a very low angst story about two best friends who are both single dad’s with 10 year-old boys who are also best friends. It’s got all of the things I expect in a V.L. Locey book: witty banter, snappy and snarky dialogue between the characters and a wonderful HEA.

Checking It Twice is part of the Snowed Inn series of connected stories that can be read in any order.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request and my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Checked out twice!!

I read Book 1 of Snowed In and I am actually part way through Book 2 but WOW Checking it Twice really takes the cake! It is absolutely an amazing story about 2 Dad's that have been friends forever. One was deep in the closet in college the other out and proud. The closeted one would come out right after the birth of his first child. He didn't want to live a lie to his son. I liked that. Maybe not when he did it buy that he realized he had to live an honest life for them. They wind up at the same Retreat (the Rainbow Retreat) that appears in the other Snowed In's. Except this story focuses on the young hockey group that Watley and Sutter brought up for an awards ceremony. They are from Arizona and see little snow. They come to Colorado to the Retreat. There is an avalanche. Wat and Sutter kiss, tell each other they love the other. Fortunately, they have some great parents from other teams so they can spend some private time together. Their boys love the scenario. Want to know what happens Read the book! This is really a wonderful love story with hockey mixed in.
I give it a 10 out of 10.

Snowed-in, BFF and gay becoming, M/M older couple with lots of humor
Where to start?! This was such a good book. I’m a sucker for a first-time story anyway, but this one was charming, humorous and witty. Sutter and Watley had been dorm mates in college. Sutter had fallen in love or at least lust for him at their first meeting. Because of family issues, Sutter portrayed himself as super jock and very straight. Even married a woman but when they had their little boy Zach, Sutter knew he needed to BE his truth so he came out. He never told Wat anything about his affection for him. Their timing was always off…until now. A snowstorm enhances their opportunity to come clean with each other. Told by Sutter.
Both men are about 52yo so the saddest part to me, even with all the humor, was that these guys let 30 years lapse before becoming what they should have been all along. Touching moments and humor abound in this short story of about 143 pages. I loved it! I volunteered to review an ARC of it through Gay Romance Reviews. If you like M/M with lots of romance and tingly anticipation, try this book. Guaranteed to appeal.

Another Enjoyable Book in the Snowed Inn Series

This is the third book in the Snowed Inn series which can be read as a stand-alone but are all linked to a mountain retreat in Colorado and an avalanche.

This is a story of two men Sutter and Watley who have been best friends since the day they went to college and found they were roommates and playing hockey together. Watley was out and proud and Sutter lived in Narnia. His parents were very religious and his father was a homophobe and so Sutter hid his real identity from everyone. He also hid the fact that he wanted to kiss Watley on that first day.

Events such as marriages and children kept them apart for more than 30 years although they remained best friends and worked together, until they took their boys and other players from the youth hockey team to the retreat for an awards ceremony and an avalanche trapped them there. With both men now divorced and unattached for the first time in years they are free to be honest with each other about the feelings they have kept hidden.

🔹Close proximity
🔹Best friends to lovers
🔹Seasoned lovers
🔹Lots of snow

A sweet friends to lovers, no angst story

This third book from the Snowed Inn collection has two single fathers who are best friends, along with their sons and a few other hockey players, stranded at the Inn as a result of the avalanche. Sutter has harbored feelings for his best friend Wat for thirty years but never said anything not wanting to hurt their friendship. They’ve been friends since freshman year of college and he’s harbored this secret that long. He was also pretending to be straight.

As the forced proximity and the machinations of one of the hockey moms (love Colleen!) take hold they are forced to confront their feelings. I enjoyed the way the story played out though I wish it had been a dual POV as getting Wat’s perspective would have enhanced the story I think. I also loved the acceptance they received from everyone around them. Man would it be nice for this to be the norm everywhere.

This was a quick, fun read. I would encourage you to read the books in the listed order, or at least read “Stop the Wedding” first as some of he references will make sense in context then.
