Hit men and Hexes #1

Hexes and Heartaches

Rate this book
A warlock, a werewolf, an assassin and a serial killer enter a bar…

When the disbanded ghost radio transmits one last message, no one can ignore the mystery sound.

The Lincolnshire Poacher transmitted it's strange song for fifty years before going silent in 2008. Then one random message gets freelance agents Voodoo and Hunter on the case.

These two men have worked together for most of their lives, travelling the country in their motor home, looking for adventure and love. Adventure lies around every corner, but love is proving more difficult to find.

So finding two ideal men on the same mission has got to be too good to be true…

This book is suitable for readers over 18. It contains graphic sex and violence, including the death of a character. But no one says he doesn't deserve it. Otherwise, it ends on a HFN, no cliffhanger.

Charlotte Brice started writing at the age of thirteen when her handwriting looked like a drunken spider tried to navigate its way across the page. Practicing her handwriting got a lot more interesting when her gran gave her two Rawhide books, and her imagination took over.
Charlotte is left-handed and can lick her own nose.
She lives in England with her husband, and many animals, four of them human. Attack chickens, confused dragons and moving rocks make up the majority of the menagerie. We can't expect much better from someone who studied fruit flies during her animal science degree and then qualified as a vet.
She remembers those days fondly, when putting her arm up a cow's bottom, and socks on emus' heads was her kind of normality. Now her head is filled with tentacles and schizophrenic phoenixes.

DNF @ 8%.

I read the blurb, I read the disclaimer… and there was no mention of Daddy kink or age play. Coulda saved some time had that been mentioned somewhere.

Aside from kinks I don’t care for, there’s four POVs. I don’t like dual POVs, so I’m certainly not going to enjoy double that.

The writing is also rather superfluous… and maybe attempting to be cheeky, but it just comes off as irritating and obnoxious. I’m definitely not picking up on the dry humour the author advertised in the disclaimer.

waste of time

Ridiculous story with awful characters, the most likable one being the serial killer, who, of course, gets killed at the end, so the other three can have their "perfect relationship"... because obviously someone who has a compulsion to kill driving them is more evil then people who consciously choose to kill, and it is especially screwed up because Hunter and Voodoo killed each other's pack/coven/family but then sit in high and mighty judgement over someone else doing the same.

Even if I could ignore all of that, the "relationships" are extremely superficial, with Voodoo and Hunter making all their judgments based on appearances and whether someone fits their idea of "perfect" instead of actually trying to get to know them. To me it read that the only reason they trusted Doll and turned on Carl was because of his cute looks and his stupidity, which is not the same as being little, ffs, but to these guys it was and now he's hitting all their buttons and they are already kicking Carl to the curb, after making all these almost-promises about how he can come with them and be happy, and that is even before Doll tells them Carl is a serial killer, which they just automatically trust and believe him. And Carl being a serial killer doesn't negate the fact that these guys are epically shallow and crappy people.

I'm done with this series and probably this author and I am going to pretend that Carl got them all down in his lair and put THEM in 56 pieces, or however many it was.

I am so disappointed and mad that I wasted my time and money on this.

edit: And apparently the above review is too something for Amazon. I find that interesting since I have seen some pretty nasty reviews on there that had little to do with the book itself, or what the person didn't like about it, and more on what the person thought of the author. First time, I believe, that I have ever attempted to leave a one star review on Amazon, guess I won't bother next time, I'll just ask for my money back like everyone else. While I'm here I will expound on why this pissed me off so much. You don't take a romance novel, give a character a huge amount of pov time, and for most of the book treat them as a viable love interest and then kill them. I don't care that Carl was a serial killer. Pulling this shit was a betrayal of my trust as a reader. You don't fucking do that. Pick any other genre and it is fine, I still won't like it, but I will not be this upset. But I spent a great deal of time invested in this character, and it was THE ONLY character that wasn't some piece of shit, superficial, only looks matter, trash character. But, I guess I should have realized. Carl was "soft" in the middle and wore glasses, while all the others were buff and pretty. So thanks Charlotte Brice for reinforcing for all of us that only thin, non-glasses wearing murderers deserve to be fucked, oh, I mean fall in love - but be aware, there is NO emotional depth in here. There is zero reason for any kind of connection with these guys, it is all about lust and that lust is all about surface things over a guy that just lays there like a corpse - oops, my bad, that is sexy, how could I not know that? I mean, Hunter wants complete control so...except for the part where Doll isn't handing over control to Hunter, he is just incapable of doing anything intelligent. But, of course, we are supposed to believe that he is the is amazing, dangerous assassin. He can't find his ass with two hands, a guide dog, and a team of Sherpas, but what does that matter? And the whole touching the hot lid, yeah, that cements him as dumbfuck. You don't have to know how to cook or be at genius levels of intelligence to understand that something hot, touching something else will make that thing hot and touching it will make you hot. stupid does not equal little, this is insulting. laying still like a corpse because you don't have enough brain to do anything else is not the same as giving up control to someone else, that's insulting to submissives. Hunter in total is insulting to dominants and Voodoo has no business calling himself a Daddy, AT ALL.

Oh, and let's not forget about fetishizing Doll's broken English...it's so "cute" and "sexy" with his accent and his inability to speak full sentences, but especially because it makes him more "child-like". Sorry for all of you out there attempting to speak a second (or more) language, you'll just have to live with being equated to a child until you are super-fluent, I guess.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

First, the elephant in the room: Voodoo. The idea of using this name of a religion as the name of a character who has no ties to the religion — who is also referred to by other characters as a witch doctor — and doesn’t practice the religion, and simply because it sounds cool is a little iffy, to me. But add in a werewolf named Hunter and a Russian named Doll and you can kind of see where the vibe of the story is going. (There’s also a French assassin called the Crazy Frog, so, yeah.) However, I think it’s meant to be tongue in cheek, but it’s something to take note of as it may offend some readers.

The writing is blunt and tell-don’t-show, and the characters get right to the point. Voodoo and Hunter lay out their kinks instantly, within hours of meeting Carl, but there’s a reason for that! A lot of things I might ordinarily shake a finger at as far as timing, or common sense (I had a list) end up being addressed later in the book, which really pleased me. While everything goes perhaps a little too easily and some loose ends aren’t tied up, that isn’t the focus of this story. This is an adventure-filled, sexy romp, and the story is fast paced and action driven.

I got to arc read this book in return for reviewing it, so here goes.

Usually, I like a book to grab me within the first chapter, and if it doesn't, I tend to stop reading it. I'm so glad I carried on with this one as I ended up really enjoying it. Voodoo and Hunter have an interesting dynamic and when Carl and Doll get added to the mix is when things get a little crazy! I don't want to go in to too much detail, as I wouldn't want to spoil the book for people, but it's well worth reading. Doll is by far my favourite character and I'm looking forward to finding out more about him. I'm also hoping that Jackal gets his own series, or at least turns up in future novels in this series.

It's the first one I've read by Charlotte Brice, but it certainly won't be the last.

This book was kind of a confusing ride, and I have a lot of complaints. Starting with the Russian MC’s English competency becoming a huge focal point. I get that the accent is cute, and if it was just limited to stuff like “Da, Vudu” for “Yes, Voodoo” and “You kill me quick, nyet?” I’d be fine with it. I even enjoyed the spicy parts where he gets overwhelmed and just cannot speak English to save his life (relatable) but I draw the line at “squishy doodads” for marshmallows and “sleeping horse” for nightmare. Hard line. It sounds like something a native speaker comes up with when they’re high and having a tip-of-the-tongue moment, not something a foreigner would authentically invent on their own.

I think the inauthenticity of a non-native speaker going for “doodad” when “thing” or “food” or “candy” is right there is pretty self-explanatory, and when you consider that “nightmare” in Russian is “koshmar” it doesn’t make a lot of sense for him to dig deep translating “mare” to “horse” when it’s already a cognate.

Furthermore, limiting the number of words he has difficulty pronouncing to those that are known shibboleths, e.g. yes to “through” and “thorough,” no to “nemesis” and “transmission”, wouldn’t have significantly impacted the story but would’ve made it much less… well, disrespectful-feeling to our main character.

And finally, I find it pretty much impossible to believe that any foreign language class anywhere on earth could even begin to teach the target language without the learner picking up ANY writing skills whatsoever… especially when we’re talking about a language with a whole new alphabet—it’s the first thing they teach you. “Here are the letters/glyphs, here are the sounds they make.” (Only when it’s impossible, e.g. Mandarin, do they teach you pinyin instead as the first point of contact.) It’s way more common for the student to have a much better comprehension of written words than their productive/receptive language ability because there’s more time to process the written word and comparatively little slurring/slang/accents to contend with.

Moving on, all of our MCs act in ways that are at odds with their stated ages. Hunter and Teddy are clingy/jealous teenagers trapped in 38/27-year-old bodies (respectively) and Doll and Voodoo aren’t much better, even with the excuse that their minds are being affected by the hexes in the house. Everyone in this book is kinda nuts, honestly, and it makes it impossible to relate to the characters.

The plot is a little… well, it mostly seems to revolve around the characters not being fully honest with one another whilst their weird personalities create amusing hijinks. It’s not a very romantic love story, but well, no one can say it isn’t character-driven.

This book started out cute and sweet with some mystery added to the mix. And then..bam...I'm hit with a curve ball. The author did an awesome job of keeping me on toes, not knowing which way they were gonna take the story. And it could go either way. It was not frustrating or confusing, but very suspenseful and intriguing from beginning to end. There were some creepy moments but weren't overwhelming.
Voodoo, Hunter, Carl, and Doll interactions had me cracking up, screaming, frustrated (in a good way), and cheering them on. And their chemistry...sizzling hot. Then there also the added bonus of Jackal (Jekyll) which I hope we get to know more of in the next book. The different aspects of magic being used was interesting. Loved the motorhome and wish I had my own, lol
The mystery started out simple and became more complicated and gruesome as the investigation revealed more secrets. It had me rooted to my seat, needing to know what was going to happen next.
It was perfect balance of dark/creepy, humor, steam, and action/suspense. And now I'm off to read the next book because I really need to know what next adventure these guys get into.

Holy twist and turns

Definitely an interesting time reading this first in a series for this new to me author. It seems like it’s going to be a fun series to read and looking forward to the next one.

Hunter and Voodoo are quite the oddball pairing. I can see why they would be freelance agents and not your usual payroll agents cause they definitely are quirky but I guess that’s what you get when you pair a werewolf with a witch doctor. Throw in a tea making enchanted motor home driving about the English countryside into the mix.

Enter Carl and Doll and the twists and turns begin. This is definitely a page turner and stuff keeps happening so you have to pay attention and keep up in this paranormal, secret agent drama, insta-love story. I definitely didn’t expect some of the things in the story and won't throw any spoilers into this review and the low key suspense was interesting. Curious as to what this unique group of characters gets up to in the next one - I'm pulling for Voodoo cause I think he needs a little happy and squishy doodads!

You know the feeling of falling in love? I got to experience that with this one. Doll stole the show! I love his horrible English and when he goes off in his Russian rants. Each character plays their role so beautifully, even the enchanted little teapot. Investigating the Lincolnshire Poacher turns out to be more than a team of paranormal investigators or a Russian assassin would've imagined. You'll have to read to discover what all I mean.😉 Here's something I will give you... Hunter and Doll... woah- ho- ho 🥵🔥🔥🔥 I love chase, chase is life, more chase, please. Voodoo is in so much trouble with those two. Also, Voodoo is going to make his own Little ridiculously happy. So good, so GOOD! I could give away the whole book if I'm not careful, that's how excited I get talking about it. Love, love, love. I highly recommend!!

When I started the first page in this story, I thought I made a huge mistake in not asking more questions before reading it. I'm not a big fan of BDSM and even worse, I don't do Daddy/Little. And this story had both. So I had to put it down and decided to read other books. Then I decided to pick it up again and I was so glad I did.

Besides the two tropes I don't like, the plot was so gripping. The plot was so well-written. The twists and turns really kept me guessing about the many mysteries going on at once. It was written with humor, wit and it was just clever. It was also dark, very dark with a great balance of humor.

And the characters were also very deep, very multi-dimensional. And they were very intriguing. I really liked all of them, even the bad guys because they were witty.

The whole story was just so clever. And I can't wait to read more from this author!

Great start

I will admit I was a little confused at first, but everything became clearer as the story went on. Around the 40% mark the story really took off and I couldn't read fast enough. Voodoo and Hunter are a witch/wolf pack that investigates some questionable cases for a fee. But they are also looking for the perfect mates to complete their pack. I liked their relationship and how they each used their unique gifts while working together. Doll was an interesting character. I liked how he spoke and embraced his submissive side with both Daddy and Master. Carl was adorable and seemingly sweet, but whoa did he surprise me. A crazy whirlwind of a story. I'm looking forward to starting the next book in the series.

This book caught me by surprise. I was expecting to like it but these guys blew me away. Our first two MCs, Hunter and Voodoo, confused me at first but I caught upon pretty quickly. Once I got started, I could not put this down. Two men looking for their their perfect matches out there and solving paranormal phenomenon puzzles along the way. The twist in this book was a unique one and I have to say that I loved it. I think my favorite character though is Doll. I can’t wait to learn more about him as this series continues. I love found families and this fits that bit of trope to a tee. It’s a bit dark and contains a bit of violence but it is all perfectly understandable in the end! Really good book! These characters are awesome and have some amazing (and sexy) chemistry.

Not sure how to describe this book, or my feelings. I liked it, 4 stars obviously, but its hard to put into words. At first I was not into it. There is a scene early on that didn't jive with how I thought the story was going, kinda changed the tone a bit. But looking back, it makes more sense and works well, but in the moment it was a bit off putting for me. So I went through most of the book with a WTF mentality, but then the reveal happens, and I was like "Oohh, I get it now". This definitely has a HFN ending, and the you could end on this book. But I think you will want to see how the little coven/pack grows and who will be the missing puzzle piece for Voodoo.

This book is everything I thought it would be. The opening of the blurb had me intrigued so much I needed to read this for sure. I really love a good mystery and this brings it without fail. This is book 1 of a series but does end on a HFN so yay for that. On the other hand my imagination runs wild with this. I loved the caracters a lot and will certainly read book 2. I recommend giving this one a try if you love secret agents, instalove and paranormal romance.

I've read several other books by Charolette Brice so when I saw the chance to ARC review this one, I was all in! I had no idea how surprisingly unique and addictive this book would turn out to be.

Voodoo and Hunter are a team of independent investigators that take low level paranormal jobs for the British government. Voodoo is a Daddy Dom and a witch, who would love to find a boy to spoil and cherish, while Hunter is a Master Dom and a werewolf, looking more for a boy to dollify and manhandle. They take a job investigating a rundown B&B on the coast, that is suspected of transmitting secret spy transmissions. There they meet Carl, the lone owner/operator and someone whom Voodoo takes an interest in. But Carl is more than just a potential boy and soon there are multiple secret agents skulking about - including one beautiful Russian assassin whose scent and magical aura call to Hunter's wolf. From here the story just explodes with magic and danger and enough sexual heat to start a fire!

I really don't want to give too much away. Voodoo and Hunter have both lost their original coven/pack and have formed their own "pack". At the beginning of the story I thought that perhaps these were characters from a previous book, because it reads as if you are already familiar with them, however it is just a really unique writing style and as the story progresses all the little blanks get filled in. The best way to describe it is that it "hits the ground running" and fills you in as you go along. "Doll", as Hunter nicknames his pretty assassin, is one of the best characters I've read in a while. He's both genuinely innocent and pliable while also being utterly ruthless and efficient. There is a British agent that factors in about halfway through - Jackal - although Doll calls him "Jeckle", and I really hope we see more of him in the future. The story ends on a HEA for now and definitely leaves an opening for future books and investigations by these characters. I was completely smitten with this story and I would truly recommend it! 5/5* stars

I couldnt help but think of this book as an all male version of Scooby Doo and the mystery machine with some of the similarities in it, lol. That might just be how my mind was thinking reading it. Only theres way more really hot sexual scenarios and dark violence in this book. It was an interesting read with characters that both surprised me but also ones that i really liked. Im looking forward to more books in this series because i enjoyed reading this one

Voodoo Daddy and Master Hunter are free lance investigators and are assigned the task of investigating why the radio station “The Lincolnshire Poacher” suddenly came back to life after being silent for many years. The transmission gave the geographic location of a run-down B&B of the same name. Arriving Voodoo finds himself enamored with the baby-faced landlord while Hunter is intrigued by the Russian assassin trying to kill him.

The plot for Hexes and Heartaches was revealed slowly and masterfully, dragging us into the story and not letting us go. It did not go as expected and everyone had some secrets that came out. The Russian assassin, nicknamed Doll, was a curious mix of ruthless, efficient killer and innocence. He had a habit of revealing knowledge in bits and pieces. Carl, the landlord, is an unknown who truly enhances and drives the story in his own way. He is much too confident. Voodoo is a Daddy Dom while Hunter is a Master Dom. When the four are together heat, danger and action are nonstop. This book starts out a slow but explodes with action. It is well worth your time.

It took me a while to get into this story, and I almost gave up a few times.
This is a MM PNR, with dom relationships and several other kinks thrown in.
For me, the story didn't get going straight away, the two main characters are investigating but get completely side tracked with potential 'perfect' partners, I just didn't really see the relationships building between the guys at all, it was an instant attraction but felt one sided.
So much of the story is taken up with the relationship dynamics and I just didn't tune into that part of the book at all. This type of dom relationship is clearly not for me and the dom/master/daddy dynamics play a huge part of the characters personality meaning I didn't click with them at all.
The investigation side of the story I really enjoyed, and the humour between the agents was entertaining. This is the part that kept me reading and I really wished there was more. I did not see the twist in the investigation coming, and it almost made me want to go back to see if i could spot the hints.

Charlotte Brice has created another fun and interesting story. Hexes and Heartaches is the first book in her paranormal Hitmen and Hexes series. In this book we meet Voodoo Daddy and Master Hunter, who are independent investigators that take low level paranormal jobs for the British government. Daddy would love to find a little to love while Master would like to find a doll like submissive. While looking into their current case they meet Carl who runs a bnb and Doll a Russian hitman. I love the whole cast of primary characters and enjoyed meeting some of the secondary characters. The story is a bit twisted and dark but such a good read. I would definitely recommend this book and I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Daddy Voodoo, a witch, and Master Hunter, a werewolf are a pack together and freelance paranormal investigators hired by the British government to check out a secret radio station. They became entangled with a supposed serial killer. a Russian agent and several other British and French agents with mayhem ensuing. I really enjoyed their interactions along with them looking for love and Hunter's possessiveness. Their closeness as they try to enlarge their pack is entertaining and keeps you involved in the book. Doll is a fascinating character and I love his pockets! This is a new and interesting idea and I hope there is another book for Daddy Voodoo. Entertaining! I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

This book immerses readers in the world of Hunter and Voodoo— a witch and a werewolf who work as freelance paranormal investigators. They’re compelling characters with plenty of nuances that come into focus over time. Their dynamic is interesting, as are the characters that move through their lives over the course of the books’ events. Doll, in particular, is super compelling. As far as the style of the story goes, I came to really enjoy the way the plot moves along, waiting for no one, and details fall into place as you go— it was a bit disconcerting at first, but ultimately enjoyable to get caught up in the narrative flow. Overall, definitely a world and characters I’d like to see more of.

Wow! This was fantastic, the author definitely knows how to keep the excitement and thrill up. No boring moments in this one.

This paranormal/supernatural, not sure what to call it, story is great written, no trouble getting into the story. And the characters were fantastic! 4 completely different men, 4 POV and a HFN for some of them. This story is a bit twisted, brutal and dark, so if this kinda things isn’t for you, just leave it…. I enjoyed it a lot! The twists, the plot, the pacing was great.

I only have one thing I wanted more of… I wanted more sizzling hotness, I’m greedy… The author writes it sooo good.

This is the story of Voodoo + Carl and Hunter + Doll. It is the first book in the Hitmen and Hexes series. Charlotte Brice is a new author to me and I will definitely be adding this author to my favourites. I loved the world that was created and the characters were /are amazing and so real. It is written wonderfully. Doll is something else and you just want to love him, but so is Carl. The action, danger and mystery kept me riveted. Loved it and can't wait for the next one. Definitely recommended.

I received this book as an Arc and I am happily reviewing it.

Wow, what a read. From the moment that I started reading this book I was hooked. It moves along at a pace which is perfect for the flow of the story. It speeds up and slows down as needed. The characters are so real that you feel as though you love them and no matter what happens you want to be there for them. This book is a must read, there is no doubt about it. It needs to be at the top of your TBR list.

This book was full of wild twists and turns. It felt like a psychological thriller as much as it did a paranormal mystery. The Daddy aspects were an interesting bit thrown into the mix.

Multiple POV really brought each of the men to life. I felt drawn in by the pack dynamics of Voodoo and Hunter's relationship, but especially Doll's background which heavily played into how he fit into the group.

Trigger Warning: graphic violence, torture (including nails which extra wigged me out).

Charlotte Brice is one of those authors that I just dive in without caution and I was not prepared for this one! It’s so unique and nothing like I’ve ever read. I really liked how Hunter and Voodoo got along even though both are dominant.
The storyline behind all the dom drama is the investigations. Wow, they are twisted when it comes to the “who done it.” This has a lot of mystery and darkness and a lot of hot MM. If that intrigues you, then this is definitely a book for you.
