A decent read with a great cover, a good story, underwhelming fight scenes, and writing in need of an editor. As you can see, there are some pros and cons diving in. I probably won't be reading this again, but it was quick, and I love diving into anything WWII related. The vampires were a plus!

I did not finish this book. In fact, I didn't even get to page 75. I would understand if you think that disqualifies me from writing a review but please hear me out.

First, the premise for this novel is bloody brilliant. On the last day of World War II, with vile Nazis on the run, a U.S. agent who saw firsthand the horrors of the Holocaust wants revenge. And he has a secret weapon: a captured vampire. Let the bloodbath begin! I generally don't read horror, but how could I resist that?

Unfortunately, The Last Night to Kill Nazis is unreadable. Published by Clash Books, it is barely better than a DIY effort. While it is nicely packaged with a sharp cover illustration, it clearly was not copy edited. There are multiple typos per page. Dialogue punctuation is all over the place. There are so many errors, I wonder if the book was edited at all. The Clash Books website lists a managing editor and an editor in chief, but I would think if either had looked at the manuscript, they would have caught at least a few of these. Hell, the author himself should have noticed a couple.

Theoretically I could have endured the mess, but the prose itself was just as bad: Repetitive, pedestrian, fat, and lazy.

The world is full of wonderful novels; this isn't one of them. It could have been, though, and that's the real horror here.

This is my first 1 star read of the year. I should of DNF’d but saw it through in hopes things would get better. For a book that boasts “Inglorious Bastards meets Dracula” this was the must dull book I’ve read all year. Nothing about this was Tarantino and maybe it’s my fault for expecting it, I don’t know.

This book takes place over the span of 24hrs with very quick chapters yet it DRAGS. Nothing started happening until more than halfway through the book and by the time shit started happening I was uninvested and did not care. Not to mention to “action” scenes left me incredibly underwhelmed. The cover art is probably the best thing about this book unfortunately.

Oof. This was a huge miss.

This could have been so much fun - a secret mission to take out a bunch of high ranking Nazis with a vampire? That could have been some gory, pulpy fun! And there are bits of this book that could have been interesting - having one of the POV characters be a former secretary for Hitler was an intriguing perspective, and there's a reference to Nazi werewolves that briefly made me perk up. But the execution was horrible. Almost every sentence had some kind of issue, whether a typo, a comma splice, messed-up dialogue tags, or several sentences running together. The story was almost exclusively told, not shown, and the characters were shallow collections of personality traits at best, barely sketched out at worst.

Great concept that was completely sunk by the writing itself.

Omg, this was pretty bad. Two stars instead of one because killing Nazis deserves an extra star. But damn, this needed a copyeditor.

such a cool concept, really poor execution

pros: really cool cover, nazi hating vampire that goes on a murderous rampage.
cons: really bad writing, multiple typos, almost no punctuation in the dialogue, the story is never fleshed out- just a whole lotta talking between characters you never really get to know or care about.

to be honest i ended up skimming through it just to see what happens after the 40% mark and did not regret that decision.

I really wanted to like this.

I’m a sucker for a good cover. While perusing the stacks the first thing that’s going to sell me on a book is the cover, and this one was hard to pass up. The cover tells you everything you need to know: a bunch of Hitler’s finest running for their lives from a burning building, a vampire with red glowing eyes and blood dripping from its fangs, and a title to really drive it home; “The Last Night to Kill Nazis” by David Agranoff. As far as book covers go, it’s a homerun.

Unfortunately, that is where my praise ends. I am no stranger to bad books with banger covers so you’d think I would be smart enough to see this coming by now. My optimism might need adjusting though, because I eagerly dove into this expecting Inglorious Basterds meets Dracula. That is not what was delivered.

Before I go on, I should describe the plot; The story takes place the day after Hitler enjoys a cyanide and bullet cocktail, so things are wrapping up with the war in Europe. A Jewish secret agent (who has been horrified by the death camps he’s encountered during the war) refuses to allow other Nazi leaders to avoid accountability, so he makes a deal with the devil and enlists a vampire into his Nazi hunting cause. It’s a killer offer, unfortunately it falls apart once you move beyond the pitch.

I don’t want to beat this author up because writing is a hard trade. I’ll never fault a person for being brave enough to put themselves out there and open their work up to criticism. At the same time, I want to be honest when I interact with a piece of art, and boy oh boy was this not a positive experience.

The biggest criticism I have concerns the editing. Or, more accurately, the lack thereof. The book is absolutely filled with typos and basic grade school level grammatical errors. I too am prone to making mistakes when I type, but I’m also not writing a novel that will be sold at Barnes & Noble (which is where I got my copy). With the number of errors per page that are in this book I’d be more surprised to find out it was edited at all.

Secondly, while the offer is great the story is a mess. Agranoff has big ideas, but the execution is way off. If I had to guess I’d say this book originated as a screenplay that he wrote and adapted. Some of the set pieces and descriptions would certainly play off better in film. The vampire in the story is the tired trope of “I’m born evil, but I want to do good” that we see too often in monster media, where we justify the evil the monster does as long as it’s pointed at something worse. It’s expected but it’s also lazy, and the unnecessary character complexity only made reading his sections a chore.

One thing I didn’t anticipate was Agranoff’s attempt to humanize some of the Nazi characters, specifically the ones that were working in the fringes of history. He doesn’t excuse their fanaticism but by trying to make them relatable adds a layer of nuance to the reckoning. I can see what he was going for, but the effort was just so sloppily handled it felt like nothing but a wasted opportunity.

I need to reiterate, I wanted to like this. Agranoff seems like he has a notebook full of really cool ideas, he just doesn’t know how to execute them properly. Unfortunately, a good idea can only get you so far, and this book is a very poorly put together collection of interesting ideas. Once again, I have been fooled by a cool premise and a pretty cover. Maybe one day I’ll learn.

okay SO let’s break it down

1. rating plot-wise:
- i fucking LOVED the premise: vampires mixed with one of my favorite movies—inglorious basterds—should have made for an incredible novel
- and honestly, the plot they concocted was FIRE
- my only qualms were a random tiny side plot they introduced for a SINGULAR PARAGRAPH and then brought up again 15 pages later for a SINGULAR LINE OF SPEECH. why. whyyyyyy. not only did it make no sense, it was not NEEDED OR RELEVANT. boooo
- they also 🚨🚨🚨SPOLIER ALERT🚨🚨🚨 let Himmler KILL HIMSELF instead of letting the vamp get him like he deserves
- other than that…… 9/10 rating plot wise

2. everything else
- sucked ass
- who edited this book
- WAS it even edited?
- issues almost every page in every single way possible.
- not even the use of too many commas, that would not bother me because i am an emphatic oxford comma encourager. this issue was the LACK THEREOF or even the MISPLACEMENT OF commas. where were they all? I KNOW, NOT WHERE THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE (alice input: they got raptured)
- and don’t even get me started on the DROPPED PERIODS. how does a sentence end? PUNCTUATION. what is the most common way to end a sentence? A PERIOD. and YET, they are more sparse than water in the Mojave Desert!
- and a most spectacular case indeed that would shock the literary equivalent of the most well renowned doctor in the world, at one point, in the first half of the book, STAGE DIRECTIONS WERE INCLUDED IN THE DIALOGUE!!! WHAT THE HELL?!
- OH AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HOW MANY TIMES THE WRONG WORDS WERE USED. choose vs chose? how bout choose another profession!!!!!! or at least CHOOSE a better editor!!!
- every single grammatical and mechanical mistake (oh god the misspellings) pulled me further and further out of the book. some parts (like when they finally started killing the nazis) were much better in terms of immersion, but every ten pages there was a mistake that ripped me out of it! someone send Reiter to this guys house
- AND THE WORST TRANSGRESSION OF ALL: THE MAIN CHARACTERS NAME WAS SPELLED DIFFERENTLY THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE BOOK. THERE WERE TWO DIFFERENT SPELLINGS USED BACK AND FORTH. SOMEONE TEACH THIS GUY HOW TO CONTROL+F IF HE REALLY WANTED TO CHANGE HIS LAST NAME THAT BADLY!!!! i thought maybe it was some commentary because he’s Jewish—but there was no consistency i could find on who was using it with which spelling!!!
- 3/10 rating :(

3. OVERALL
- i shall give this book 3/5 stars overall :/

2 and a half stars rounded down.

Amazing cover, great concept, ok execution, really bad editing. It's a shame but all of the errors are really hard to overlook.

I love short chapters and I love short books but I felt like a few ideas here were half baked and maybe should have just been cut in lieu of more vampire splattering Nazis mayhem. Or flesh everything out and make this a true epic. There is a sub plot about stealing Nazi plans that probably could have been it's own book but instead felt like an afterthought. There is a 40-some year jump at the end that could have been an entire 20 book series. Globe trotting the world with a vampire to hunt down nazi war criminals? Write that like a noir hard boiled detective book series and I am all in. It left me wanting more but in kind of a bad way.

Its slow at the start working up to the nazi killing. One we're in the meat of it though thats when the fun begins. From there on out its a hoot and a half! I was hovering around three stars for this one but I think the ending was so nice it really bumped it up to a four star for me. That first half dragging on was the main reason I was trepident about going above three. Its like 130 pages of setup and its not that fun. My advice is skim that section to get to the fun faster. Monsters killing monsters? whats not to love

Cool concept, awful execution. My biggest problem with this is a character (Goring) was killed on like page 70 and then he just magically shows back up on page 129 like nothing happened. Tons of punctuation and grammatical errors. Several more continuity errors beyond the Goring bit. Did anyone look at this before it was published?

yeah, the other reviews aren’t wrong. there are a noticeable amount of typos and punctuation errors, and the pacing isn’t perfect, but you know what? it’s camp. nazis getting what they deserve? vampires? say less. i had fun and that’s what matters

Okay...
The reviews aren't WRONG but they certainly aren't RIGHT either. There are a few moments of poor grammar and punctuation but they are far from enough to take you out of the experience and certainly not enough for me to believe, as one review does, that it wasn't even edited.
The book has an excellent concept and the plot executes it well. I only wish there was more tension in the story, from the point of the assault on the nest onwards it feels more like a slaughter (which, I suppose, is intended as the Nazis have almost no idea what they are up against and have little chance even if they knew) which is entertaining from a "they're Nazis I want to see them suffer" kind of way but none of the main human characters who are assaulting the nest really do very much once the assault begins; only Mallory even enters the building before all of the Nazis have been dealt with and only encounters one person while in there; and none of them are even so much as injured. That being said the book was a fun experience from beginning to end and I would recommend it to anyone who wants something relatively light hearted and fun.

Dracula meets Inglorious Basterds is a perfect description for this book! It is bloody, fun, and (most importantly) satisfying. Karma for Nazis in the form of fangs. So obviously, I enjoyed it.

That being said, the writing could have benefitted from some more edits. Parts of the narration are very clunky. The punctuation is awful and full of distracting errors. Some plot points and transitions needed more development. For example, the vampire motivation is a bit vague. He gets onboard with the plan immediately and the reasons for helping don't become clear until later. Certain events also happen too easily, without enough tension. As much I as enjoy Nazis getting slaughtered, it warrants some Valkyrie level stress.

I think this was the type of history lesson everyone should read. What more can you want than a Jewish man on the hunt to avenge every last one of his fellow men with a several hundred year old vampire who can sniff out any German and read their thoughts? And a beautiful send off at the very end? It was needed. It was lovely.

David Agranoff's "The Last Night to Kill Nazis" is a fun and unique ride. It's part supernatural thriller, part historical fiction, peppered with fast-paced gore and dark humor. The writing is sharp, energetic, and astute. The research into the historical context of the Nazi regime is evident, adding a layer of authenticity to the fantastical elements of the story. The characters on both sides are fleshed out with historical and human detail. What I enjoyed most was the author’s dedication to the idea that bad guys, whether they are Nazis, Vampires, or unforgiving purveyors of vengeance, never believe they are the bad guys. There is justification in everything they do no matter how inhuman, horrific, or cruel.

Overall: ⭐⭐⭐

Plot: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Characters: ⭐⭐⭐

World Building: ⭐⭐⭐

Ending: ⭐⭐⭐

Favorite Character: Reiter

Favorite Part: Honestly? None, it wasn't memorable enough for me to have a favorite part.

Thoughts: This would've been much better had the author had a competent editor. There were so many grammar errors and punctuation errors that it was impossible to get immersed in the story. Not to mention most of the characters felt flat, and the constant bouncing around was jarring. Overall the idea was excellent, just poor execution.

Grabbed this gem at StokerCon. The cover immediately caught my eye and as a self professed WW2 junkie, I had to have it.

Follow a small group of Allied soldiers as they unleash their secret weapon (oooooooo it’s a vampire!) on unsuspecting, top Nazis as they attempt to flee to form another Fatherland and be generally awful.

Vampires ripping apart Nazis is always a win in my book.

Greatly enjoyed this book.

alright whoever had the bright idea to call this 'Inglorious Basterds meets Interview With The Vampire' deserves the gold medal of LIES. Comparing this in any way to IWTV is an insult to Anne Rice, and as for bringing up Tarantino's work--that failed, too. The poor grammar and stale descriptions make this a very, very difficult read. DNF'd at chapter 11.

Starts a little slow but with some nice character work I can forgive it. The story then goes off like a horrible powder keg. A great read the tag line of "inglorious bastards with a vampire" is underselling it in my opinion.

The Last Night to Kill Nazis by David Agranoff

An absolutely fun fantasy about unleashing a vampire on a den of Nazis at the Eagles Nest the day after Hitler kills himself.

The aspect I really appreciate about the story is that is takes place from two primary perspectives, and an additional perspective of the vampire’s mindset.

I have always believed that it is the strength of a good writer to garner sympathy for a character that you would otherwise feel nothing for. And an even better author will betray that sympathy you feel, that you know you shouldn’t have felt in the first place. And I feel David does this well with the character Alice.

You go into the story knowing who she is, where her allegiances lie. But as you get to know her, and start to get to know her more tangible motivations you start to hope, “well, maybe she’s okay. She can learn. Know the truth. Be a better person. For the sake of her kin.” But once the bigger motivational factors come into play, it’s realized just how deep convictions of faith, of harm, of “purity” is. And how that driving force is what’s going to determine her destiny.

Also, I very much enjoyed the last chapter and epilogue. They were a satisfying coda to what could have just ended.

Though I don’t know if author’s intention is to have a sequel, there was a bit of classified material in the novel that could very well spin off to a sequel of sorts. If it happens and we get a few wolves out of it, that would be very exciting.

A fun book. 🙂

I was not going to write a review, but after reading the other reviews, I felt it necessary.
Yes, the book has multiple grammatical errors and such, but let's be honest here; no one is choosing to read this book expecting it to be a phenomenal piece of literature. No, we chose to read this because of the fun and intriguing idea of Nazis being decimated by a vampire. It is an incredibly fun and quick read. The set up is a tad bit slow for some, but I thought it was okay and definitely made the events better since we get multiple perspectives and are made aware of what is at stake for each character including the vampire. Now, the characters are rather one dimensional which I attribute mostly to the book being short and wanting to get to the main point: killing Nazis. That being said, they are likeable enough to move the plot along. Well, the squad hunting Nazis were likeable; the Nazis, for obvious reasons, were unlikable by historical design. In short, this book reads like a movie: there is not a lot of room for character development, and that's not what the book is about anyway.
This is not meant to be the next Frankenstein or Dracula. This is simply meant to be fun. Don't overthink it or let yourself get stuck on the grammatical errors. I loved reading this and hoping we get more fun stuff like this.
