The idea of setting is in 2003 was inspired and gave a more vulnerable sense of shock as Pippa's friend Heather goes missing on a school run.
The whole notion of a missing teenager in a pre-smartphone era really raises the stakes.

When Heather's body is discovered, there is a hint of something more than a tragic accident that really drives the plot.

The books main strength is the relationship between Pippa and her mother.
The bond of a parent who wants to protect her child is really strong, especially as her dad seemed more career driven.

I also liked how the author included many references to era were a nice touch.
Mentions of Friends ending make me feel old though!

This is a well written, dark, creepy, tense and twisted read. The relationships between the women and girls are complex. Pippa and Heather had been best friends since childhood, but they share a secret that one of them doesn't like. Some of the characters you'll love, others you'll love to hate. The pace is fast throughout.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #OrionPublishingGroup and the author #CarysJones for my ARC of #SheHadItComing in exchange for an honest review.

This was an enjoyable dark and twisty read. I found this to be quite slow in the first half and I did think I had it all figured out what was going to happen.

The story is told from the POV’s of the missing girl’s best friend Pippa and Pippa’s mother Abbie. There are also letters from Heather to Pippa where we find out more about the girl’s friendship.

I have read a book by this author before and enjoyed that so I’d definitely read more in the future.

Well worth a read for the twists and the great ending.

Thank you to Orion Books for inviting me on the tour and for the gifted copy of the book.

I was brought up that if you couldn't say anything nice you shouldn't say anything at all, which makes it really hard to review this book.

The only positive was that it ended eventually.

The negatives are almost too many to mention... the writing, the characters, the entire story.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for the advanced copy to read and review.

I feel like this book needs a trigger warning for bitchy, borderline bullying teenage girls, because the second I opened this book I was hit with it and immediately I was taken back to my high school days, where I was bullied so that was FUN!

All that aside, something didn't feel 100% right with this book, I think it was a mixture of everything... It was good but it lacked that little extra that made it thrilling.

Starting with the characters, I found it really difficult to get attached to any of them tbh, whilst I did think Pippa had some redeeming qualities (and I know firsthand how hard it is to be a teenage girl) I still struggled to feel anything for her throughout the book. I did think the way the author demonstrated motherly (and fatherly love to an extent) was cleverly done though.

And as I said above, I felt the atmosphere just really lacked that little bit of something that made it thrilling, for me until the last 4 or so chapters really.

Onto the writing now, I did think it was good but as the book was written in 3rd person I found it really difficult to keep track of which perspective the story was coming from. At points, it felt like Abbie was the lead character, but it was actually Pippa and then back to Abbie. It didn't feel like the story every settled on one person and it wasn't overly clear where the divide and change in the story was.

It was the same with the plot, I did enjoy the plot and I thought it had some real potential, but it felt kind of obvious what was going on and what was going to happen. I'm not sure if I've just read too many thrillers so I know what to expect or if it was just really transparent what was going to happen (I'm hoping for this books sake it was the first one!)

SPOILER ALERT.

I hated how the author threw in the whole sociopath and narcissist bit at the end of the book, there had been ZERO mentions of this throughout the rest of the book and it was like the author was just going for the shock factor without any consideration for what those words and definitions actually mean. It really annoyed me.

SPOILER ALERT OVER.

On the whole, I think this book had the right idea, it was a good plot and premise, it just needed a better execution and that lil extra something to make it a real standout 5 star read.

Pippa and Heather have a love/hate relationship. Friends since childhood, now sixteen their best friends status is wearing thin. Heather is a domineering and forceful character, speaks her mind and has little tact. This causes many squabbles between the girls and their other school friends. When Heather tells Pippa that Pippa’s dad is sleeping with Heather’s mum things start to get even more strained. If only something could be done about Heather’s lies and nasty ways.

Before I start this review, I would just like to say how much I loved Jones’ “We Are All Liars”, and eagerly looked forward to this book. Sad to say it is nowhere near in the the same class as the author’s previous works, and if it were not for the adult themes, then I would have said this was definitely a YA book. The relationship between the girls is only interesting if you are of that age and the constant name dropping of the labels that the characters were using and wearing was annoying and boring. The characters were mainly superficial and not at all likeable, and the plot predictable. The denouement was a good twist, and worthy of the author, but I think most people would have worked the majority of the plot out pretty early on.

A real shame about this book as I know the author is much better than this, and hope it’s just a blip.

With a good editing and a bit of tweaking this would make an excellent YA offering, hence the 3*.

Thank you NetGalley.

I really enjoyed this twisty murder mystery- She Had It Coming by Carys Jones was an intriguing book with two interesting narrators.
I received the book for a free and unbiased opinion
The book is set in 2003 ( I have to confess to being a little taken aback when I realised 2003 was twenty years ago) and the author succeeds in making this feel like a different time.
The mystery at the heart of the book is the disappearance and eventual murder of 16-year-old Heather- a popular, wild, clever girl whose mother, Michelle, is the local GP. Michelle, too, is a source of gossip as a working mum among the group of mothers Abbie hangs out with.
But this book isn’t just a whodunit. This is a book about mothers and daughters as well as the unrealistic expectations placed on women sometimes by the women themselves. Is Michelle a bad mother for having a job? Is Abbie a bad wife
This was a quick and easy read- I finished this in one sitting which was just as well as I wanted to find out what happens at the end.
I haven’t come across Carys Jones's books before but I will definitely be reading her backlist.

The next book I read is She Had It Coming by Carys Jones and I received the book from Orion Books via Netgalley. It just came out a few days ago, on the 19th of January.

A girl goes missing. It's Pippa's best friend, Heather. Heather is the all too known popular and pretty girl - also the mean girl. Always craving attention and that's what people think now as well. She will show up. And she does show up - except she is found dead. And Pippa is the last one to have seen her alive.

This was an interesting book to read, but definitely not a thriller. More a slow burning crime story the takes some time to unravel. Mostly you follow Abbie, the mother, and Pippa and you get to know these characters a bit, but it mostly stay rather superficial. The letters between Heather and Pippa are not really necessary for the story - sometimes they are even a bit too much. Abbie is not always easy to follow as a character. Sometimes she takes decisions that others would normally not take, but that is also a bit of the charm of the book. A little of an 'off' character, perhaps a bit due to the alcohol. It fits in the story. It was easy to guess who did it so it was rather predictable.

She had it coming by Cary’s Jones
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Yet another author to add to the auto buy list!

She had it coming tells the story of Pippa and her mother. Pippas best friend has gone missing and as the story unfurls we learn the truth of what really is happening in this mother and daughters carefully structured world.

I really didn’t expect to fall in love with this book as much as I did but I read it in a day ! It really is one of those books that completely captivated me and I can’t wait to delve into all the authors back catalogue and future releases!

The story was perfectly crafted and flowed seamlessly. Rather than spending all my time guessing what would happen next I found myself completely immersed in this book, the characters were so real to me that I can picture every aspect of their life down to the most minute detail.

The pace of this book is very fast and I can see it working very well for a tv drama !

Thank you again to Orion books and the author Cary’s Jones for allowing me the Privilege to read this book in exchange for an honest reviews

This is a dark and twisty read that examines the complexities of female friendships and is full of characters you’ll love to hate.

Pippa and Heather are best friends though they are quite different, with Heather the cool, popular and slightly wild one with a bit of an edge and Pippa the quieter of the two. Pippa’s mother Abbie is not overly keen on the friendship, nor does she like Heather’s mother, a doctor, who she feels looks down on her and the other mothers at school. When Heather goes missing during a school cross country run, the initial assumption is that she has run away. But when she is found dead, and it is Pippa who is the last person who has seen her alive, things start to get complicated and secrets are revealed.

This is a slow burn of a book as the dynamics of the relationship between the girls is brought to light, partly through notes written by Heather to Pippa, and we begin to see the edge to their friendship that is all too common in teenage girls’ relationships. There are plenty of twists and a clever ending and it all makes for an engaging read.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I feel like this was a nice little mix of YA and thriller, exploring the strained relationship between friends, and between mothers and daughters. It did feel very high school drama themed (in a good way) and sometimes there is nothing easier than losing yourself in a bunch of bitchy characters who will do anything to look good.

It did bring me right back to high school and make me glad I’m a whole grown adult who spends more time with my books than with drama filled people.

I suspected I could see where the story was going from the beginning but it did throw me some nice little curve balls.

A solid 3.5 stars, rounded up!

Pippa and Heather are typical teenage best friends; swapping clothes, talking about boys, mild bullying and gossiping that is until there’s a secret one of them doesn’t like. When Heather goes missing during a cross country run and because of her wild nature most people think she’s run away. But when Heather returns up dead and pippa was the last person to see her alive their lives get turned upside down.

Although the plot isn’t winning unique awards it was an engaging and well written story that keeps you guessing, and obviously has some character you love to hate!

Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book.
The writing style was fine but it was very predictable, dragged a simple story out and none of the characters had likeable or relatable qualities - they would be the type of folk I avoided in real life so I wasn’t particularly invested in their well-being. Overall it was just pretty miserable. I carried on to the end hoping for last minute twist that would change everything but that didn’t come. I wouldn’t really class this as a thriller, more an unravelling of a story.

Kind of felt predictable. The last person who saw Heather alive was Pippa. Who happened to be the person who killed her. Was kind of hoping all the way through that maybe there was a twist coming. That maybe Pippa’s dad had done it. Or the teacher. But unfortunately no. Found it far fetched that her mother had killed Heather’s mother to frame her husband for both and he had just accepted it.

It finished with them both, Pippa and her mother, being narcissists?

It was an intriguing read but i did feel let down with the predictability.

I did struggle with this and had 2 false started before I managed to get through it. Ot seemed to me to be a bit dull and more of a drama and just teen angst which I couldn't be bothered with but on finally sticking with it, I did really enjoy the thriller mystery aspect and it did turn out to be a good book! Maybe I jist wasn't in the frame if kind originally to really get into it but I'm very glad I tried, tried again!!

Thanks to Netgalley and Orion UK for this ARC.

I didn't realise initially that this book was a YA book, although I realised fairly quickly due to the writing style.

A good storyline which kept me engrossed, although there was a fair amount of superfluous detail which I found a little annoying in parts. An easy read which piqued my interest even if there were elements that didn't quite add up.

Really enjoyed this book. The storyline kept me gripped and, although a lot of reviews said they saw the twist at the end coming, I absolutely did not so thought it was an amazing twist to the story. My only criticism is having noticed a fair few errors with some words being muddled up and the odd sentence not quite making complete sense. But that is easy to look past considering how it kept me gripped!

I love books about mothers and daughters and this one really delivered. I particularly enjoyed the exploration of complex female friendships that didn't shy away from the ugliness that can linger behind the pleasant smiles of teenagers.

Unsettling, fast-paced, and wonderfully dark. I didn't want to put it down.

Pippa and Heather are away on a school practice run, when Heather insists on a shortcut. Something happens and she disappears. Everyone is questioned, revealing secrets about both students and parents. Then Heather is found dead, and everyone becomes a suspect.
Amazing thriller, it would be great as a TV series. The characters come to life and I cannot wait to read more from Carys Jones!

I wouldn’t class this as a thriller, it’s more of a slow burner crime. It was an ok read but I didn’t connect with any of the characters and some bits were hard to follow and unnecessary. The twist at the end was good but I predicted it pretty early on.. so maybe this is why I just wanted it to end quicker than it did. 3 star.

This was quite dark, and not being a mother myself, I'm not sure how believable it was. It was interesting to see where it led, and to explore the sociopath side of things.

The version I read could definitely do with some proofreading as there were quite a few errors.

I would read another by this author.
