This is my first read of well known author, Phillipa Ashley, who writes feel good, escapist festive fare, set here in the beautiful and mesmerising location of the Lake District. It features Krystal, 'Krys' who is making her way for a much needed break, intending to spend time building on her relationship with boyfriend, Brett, driving to Thorndale in his Porsche. She has had a tough year, still grieving the loss of the most important person in her life, her Aunt Linda, with whom she lived as things got progressively more difficult when her mother decided to centre her life around a new partner, Gus. Krys has booked a 2 month stay at a place she first saw as a child, her dream Chrismas Card house, Holly Manor, where she hopes to recuperate and heal. She thinks she has much in common in Brett, both of whom have dragged themselves from tough, deprived backgrounds to forge successful careers in their chosen professions.

Krys has carved a career as a buyer, it centres on the Chrismas season, planning and organising both commercial and private home Christmas decorations and events. She loves and is so good at what she does that she is known as Mrs Christmas, her work beginning as soon as one Christmas ends to begin planning for the next one, picking up on new trends, having built up close relationships with suppliers in the business. However, as is often with the best laid plans, matters start to go awry right from the start when Brett's car gets stuck in a overflowing stream, and they are rescued by the taciturn and far from sociable Max, with his dog, Jake. As Brett fails to turn up for their holiday due to work crises, Krys slowly begins to develop a closer relationship with Max, a man with a tragic past, and finds herself at the heart of the small and supportive local community when she agrees to help decorate the Mountain Rescue Team premises for a Ball to raise funds and organise Santa's Grotto for deprived children at the Outdoor Centre.

This is an enjoyable, entertaining and engaging read although it took a little time before I became fully immersed in the narrative, with the romantic elements largely understated. There is a greater emphasis on the charms and menace of the brilliant location, the wonderful community, and the detailed character development of Krys, her experiences of a challenging childhood and having to handle the fact that things do not always turned out as planned, but all is not lost. This goes hand in hand with Max's background and emotional trauma that pushed him into living as a virtual hermit, he is slowly coming out of his shell helped by Krys, and his involvement with the Mountain Rescue Team and the invaluable work done by its volunteers. I think many readers will be drawn into the warmth of the story and enjoy this festive read. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

*A Christmas Dream*

This book for me was better the latter half. The main character Krystal aka Krys did not have the best start in life with her mother money was lacking and they sofa surfed and when her mother met a new man, Krys became an inconvenience. She ended up staying with her aunt who virtually brought her up and added stability to her life. During her childhood she went on trips for children who lacked income and she stumbled upon this house she loved and as she peered into the window it was decked out with all the trimmings that she always dreamt of she promised herself she would stay there one day. It was called Holly Manor.

Fast forward many years She is now known as Mrs Christmas due to her job as a buyer for many companies supplying all things Christmas. Her job is all consuming. Her boyfriend understood her drive as he also travelled all over the place for his work on his rise to the top job.

So, in order to have time together she books the very place she remembers from her childhood. This trip is make or break for their relationship, are they on the same wavelength?

They run into trouble on their travel up in heavy rain and need help and the very gruff on appearance character Max comes to their aid. He is carrying a painful secret that he holds dear and has cut himself off preferring to live in solitude. Why does he hate Christmas? Things change when meeting Krys puts his feelings into conflict and things unravel when an opportunity comes up that may mean that he comes out of the shadows and Krys realises her dream of the perfect Christmas since childhood may look completely different moving forward

That moment when you start reading a book and you fall immediately into a zone that all readers want to be in, whatever that is called, that’s exactly what happened with this book! Immediately I know the characters that I am going to love and the one that I’m not so crazy about. I know I am in for a great journey!

If you make a bad decision, and a tragedy happens (that is not your fault, but you accept fault nonetheless) should you live the rest of your life in repentance? This book has a character in that position. Max is a character that became a real person to me, and I care about him so much. I felt his guilt, pain and struggle. His dog Jake, is Max’s saving grace. As it is true in life, Max did not recuse Jake. Jake definitely is the rescuer.

I actually identified with the other main character, Krys (Krystle) so much. As a child, in a family that struggles financially, you always carry that feeling of helplessness and stigma with you into the rest of your life. That is not to say it controls your life, but I think it is always a part of decisions. Therefore I saw a kindred spirit in Krys.

These two were meant to be united, although it is not an easy road for them to find happiness together, but it is a romance, so the reader knows it will all end happily.

Of course every story needs a person that is not likable, and this book has Brett. He is created perfectly to not like him, however he is not criminal, just selfish and clueless as to how he should treat people.

I enjoyed this wonderfully emotional story by Phillipa Ashley. She is a favorite author of mine and I think this may be my favorite book of hers, but I usually feel that way after finishing each of her books!

I cannot close this review without stating that the book cover is so beautiful and definitely drew me to pick this book to read.

A huge thank you to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for giving me the immense pleasure of reading the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.

Brilliant cosy Christmas read. I could not put this down! It’s one book that is more than just your lighthearted romance. There’s some really dark themes throughout with a big prevalence around death and lower working class society, but there’s also this huge sense of community in the book which is great.

It’s set in the Lake District at Christmas time, but don’t expect white snowy England. You just never know what weather to expect in this little town! And there are some really emotional scenes, I think I almost ruined my book with tears at the “Santa” scene. Honestly.

If you’re looking for something that’s lighthearted as well as emotional, dark and a little bit hopeful, this is your book. It’s a Christmas book, but perfect for any time of year!

Thank you so much to Avon Books UK for the gifted copy!

I’ve really enjoyed this festive story from Philippa Ashley. Although I have made a habit of saying that chicklit isn’t for me I’ve recently stumbled across a run of Christmas reads which are really relaxing and escapist without being predictable or patronising.

The Lake District setting of The Christmas Holiday is perfect and I was drawn in from the prologue & the childhood experiences of Krystal. The detail surrounding the mountain rescue teams was really interesting & all the characters were believable and (on the whole) likeable.

A really enjoyable read & I shall seek out more from Phillippa Ashley. Many thanks to Net Galley and Avon Books for the ARC.

Quite possibly the easiest 5 stars I've given! Not going to lie - the Lake District setting and vast references to the AMAZING work of our fab Mountain Rescue Teams was enough to hook me in. I'm so grateful to Phillipa Ashley for highlighting the never-ending work MRTs do (not just the rescues) and all as volunteers.

That aside, this was a delightful story with some very likeable lead characters and Jake the dog had a starring role too. I spied at the end of the story another Lake District-set novel and am off to look that up!

I loved the sound of this book and well, Phillipa Ashley can write such humoorous and warm stories and I hoped this festive offering is just like thus.
The beginning was good. Really good, fast - paced, interesting, with many eye - rolling at the characters' antics moments. There was a georgeous setting, the characters had background and their own stories and I set for a brilliantly developing novel. However, after the break - up, the book just went downhills. Literally. It started to feel unbelievably slow, the actions were predictable and obvious and sometimes completely out of order, like the visit and the words of Erin's sister, I mean, WTF? It felt way too descriptive, every single moments and word were decsribed and tore apart and it was so slow, going to the ball took, like, thousand pages. It's a shame, the book lost its light for me and didn't keep my attention, it felt luke - warm, superficial and predictable, and while sometimes predictable is good, it was not the case this time. It'S a shame, because I really like this author and I hoped for something deeper, funnier, lighter and festive. Even the main characters being called Mrs. Christmas didn't make me feel festive.

This was a joy to read. The Christmas Holiday has transported me to the beautiful Lake District and it’s been a wonderful adventure. I’ve loved getting to know Krys and her festive business sounded ideal for this story - the perfect role.
Full of second chances and love The Christmas Holiday shows the true meaning of community spirit and being there for eachother. Humbling and emotional, tales from the mountain rescue were a fitting backdrop to Krys and Max’s stories and I loved how I became swept up in their lives. A perfect Christmas read.

I really enjoyed this festive book. Set in the Lake District, set among the sheep, mountains and the rain. This sweet story really hit the spot for Christmas. The story was predictable but, it didn’t really matter as I just sank into it and got lost in it. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

This was another lovely read from Ashley and I enjoyed how passing references were made to characters from other books that are set in the Lake District. Full to the brim of romance and Christmas, this was a sweet story with likeable characters from start to finish.

The dramatic opening scenes were an unusual way to start a book by this author but it immediately grabbed my attention. It is clear that Krys has invested a lot of time and emotion into this Christmas getaway with her boyfriend. But, being stranded in a rising ford and with the rain lashing down is hardly the start to the perfect holiday she had imagined. Krys is devastated by the damage that is caused by her Christmas decorations because they have such sentimental value. And this is what summarises Kry's character: she is devoted to Christmas and thrives off the joy spread through decorations.

Settling into Holly Manor, Krys finds she is spending more time with the local community than with her boyfriend. I enjoyed watching the locals embrace this city stranger and how easily Krys interacts with others. Yes, her arrival in the village has not escaped local gossip, but Krys does not let this deter her. Whilst she may be considered as a materialist character, I enjoyed Ashley's portrayal of Krys as she helps out with the local mountain rescue team, uses her work contacts to help spread Christmas cheer, and even spends lot of time at the local youth centre. This last location was particularly special to Krys because of the memories it provokes and I liked seeing how she gives back something to a place that came to change her life forever.

The mystery that is behind Max adds fuel to the story. For Krys, he is a bit of an enigma and I enjoyed seeing how their paths cross frequently. After all, they are practically neighbours and Max's withdrawn behaviour from the village simply raises questions about his background. Over the course of the novel, Max moves from being an unreadable stranger to a character you sympathise with and I relished in the dramatic final scenes that show Max revealing his true self once and for all.

Escape to the Lake District with plenty of views and cold weather. This the perfect read to snuggle up with in the winter months and I loved Krys's drive and appreciation for Christmas. Her energy is palpable and the warmth and cheer she spreads even reached out beyond the pages as I found myself thinking of her whilst putting up my own Christmas tree! It's a great read from Ashley and one that is best served with tinsel and hot chocolate.

With thanks to Avon books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Christmas Holiday by Phillipa Ashley

This is a brilliantly written description book which I couldn't put down once I started I read this in one sitting.

I like the characters, Krys and Max, I hated Brett he annoyed me and I didn't like his character at all.
Krys had a hard time recently after living with her Aunt Linda for years she's passed away so now she planned for the first Christmas to travel to Holly Manor with her boyfriend Brett. They come to some troubles in their travels and are saved by Max.

Again a few things happen and Krys helps Harriet one of the home town residents with some preparation for Christmas.

Max and Krys definitely have some chemistry and share some trues which each other.

I will be rereading this book as I found the writing excellent and I couldn't get enough of the story.

A huge thank you to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for giving me the immense pleasure of reading the advance reader copy. My
review is my own opinion.

Sweet, charming, wintery, dreamy, and Christmasy - but also oh, so predictable.

It follows a certain mould and if you know it - you know it.
That's the only real drawback, but predictable can be relaxing. In my case, that was just what I needed at the moment + the Christmas vibes. 🎄✨

If it weren't for the sudden and really out-the-blue dRaMaTiC iNcIdEnT that happened when the sister in law showed up, I would probably have given this book 4 stars.

However, that (quite brief) incident managed to be really jarring, unsettling, over the top horrible, awful, AND illogical. It yanked me straight out of the cosy mood and made me feel disgust (at the sister in law) instead.
I think something a little less hysterical and mentally disturbed for a dRaMaTiC iNcIdEnT⟨™⟩ would have been a better choice, to be honest. 😅

Never the less: Recommended if you're looking for a sweet XMas romance.

A warm hug with words.

If you want another hallmark type of christmas within a book, this one is for you.

Krys and her very annoying boyfriend have made a trip to the Lake District however it does not have the best start. Along comes a local to their rescue. Of course, you can see how this will play out. Her boyfriend really annoyed me as it made me wonder, why are you with him, do you have low self-esteem or no respect for yourself? As it was clear they didn’t have as much chemistry.

It was a cosy read overall.

My heart went out to young Krystle at the beginning of this book – a really difficult childhood only made easier by her aunt’s loving care, and the gorgeous sight while on holiday in the Lakes, seen through a window, of a room decorated for Christmas, complete with roaring fire and presents under the tree. It ignited her love for everything Christmas-related – now her year-round and particularly successful career.

Her relationship though has hit a bit of a rocky patch, and when she sees the very same house is available for rental, it looks like the opportunity to plan the perfect Christmas break and to get life back onto an even keel. Things certainly don’t start well, and perhaps her relationship really has gone beyond saving – but the early drama results in Max crossing her path, her early overtures of friendship rather rebuffed (he’s a man who, for the best of reasons, prefers his own company and to keep his secrets), but warming up nicely as she becomes increasingly part of the Lakes community.

This really is just the loveliest story, gloriously Christmassy and quite beautifully told – the perfect setting too, and that community feel that I always love so much. My fondness for Krys only grew as the story built – and Max’s story is desperately sad, my heart really breaking for him over everything he’s been through and the immense effort needed to restart his life. But the story’s a particularly uplifting one, filled with love and warmth – as their relationship starts to develop (and I was willing them on every step of the way), they both become increasingly involved in the work of the local Mountain Rescue Team, with plenty of dramatic moments along the way.

And, alongside all that, Krys has plenty of opportunities to show why she’s known in the industry as Mrs Christmas – calling in every favour she’s owed to give the whole community a Christmas to remember. There are so many really special moments in this book – and not all of them involving reindeer, star-covered night skies (real or recreated), or Santa’s grotto – and it was a book that totally engaged me at every level, but especially at an emotional one.

It’s really just the loveliest read – if it’s not on your list, do add it straight away – and I’m absolutely kicking myself that I’ve never read one of Phillipa Ashley’s books before. I bet she’s great at summer too – I can’t wait to find out. One of my very favourite Christmas reads this year, and I recommend it really highly.

This is more of a true neutral at 2.5. It is not anything special, but it is cozy enough for the most part, until the car the plot is in decides to rev it and just go as fast as possible through speed bumps.

So, what do we have here? Krys (from Krystle, what a name...) finally ends up in her dream Christmas home with her boyfriend, Brett, while Max is supposedly a hermit of sorts who stumbles upon the couple in their time of need. All in all, it had a realistic approach in many things, about hard conversations and adjusting in a new place and relationships, not mentioning the cozy feeling you get from the Christmas vibes. It does make you wonder though how the story will get rid of Brett as he is not the true MC.

And... it does it in a kind of predictable, disappointing way. Their relationship wasn't good from the start, they barely talk, heavy focus on how they are "similar", but not really and an extensive look into Max's thoughts about him (and her...). The hermit, the person who was rarely seen, the one who avoided everything and everyone can't help commenting right off the bat how much he sucks and she's so pretty and deserves better. Mind you, both of them were stupid city people, but Brett is terrible cause he's a city boy! The book does not disappoint Max, as it just throws Brett away in every way possible, but thankfully he was not made a complete jerk in every single instance. In the same vein, Max the monk, starts opening up the INSTANT Krys appeared, but you know, in a ruggedly "slow" pace.

Then, you have a long stretch of Krys acclimatizing and becoming an important part of the community while getting to meet Max more. Guilt about Brett, but never-ending desire for Max and story develops more with some sweet moments and Max's story coming out, until... the last few chapters, where everything is out of control. It was like watching a heart monitor' spikes! A character appears out of nowhere who is just there for the drama and changes tune so fast, I felt the whiplash! Very nonsensical and it's a pity considering the book took enough time to build connections.

One teeny tiny thing that maybe I should get used to, but was just so evident here was the endless amount of money they both had. Max at some point mentions that facts and is thankful for it, but at the same time, both just make so much money apparently in a place that everyone is barely getting by. Dude doesn't even need to work and Krys feels like she has endless savings. Every time I read about her orders which always arrived super fast in a remote enough place and Max's "presents", I had to repeat to myself how this was just a silly Christmas story.

Last but not least, the Christmas vibes... we're actually not that much prevalent even though she's Mrs Christmas and helped decorate almost every big event. It wasn't bad per se and I'm not exactly disappointed, it's just all the events about Christmas seemed to be swept away fast to give way to Krys and Max. Not to say there weren't some moments, but definitely didn't capitalize on them, just used them as props for something else, I suppose.

perfect Christmassy romcom based in the Lakes with a recovery team that’s like a family 🫶🏻

Okay so this was my first Phillipa Ashley read and I’m happy with how it turned out! The storyline was adorable and the characters were all lovable

Krys was honestly a lovely one to read about, she had so much character and loved everything about her. She’s been through a lot but not let it set her back

Max. what a sweetheart- what is it about the quiet ones that are always the sweetest. You haven’t had it easy but you’re one of the golden ones

Jake - I want 10 of you

The whole storyline was amazing and I loved every minute

As usual, Phillipa Ashley spins a tale of love but a hard fought one! Max hates Christmas and he has to be shown the joys of this but he proves a hard convert!. Krystle has always yearned for a family Christmas and it seems that that helped shape her career!. She meets grumpy Max and ends up with more than she bargained for!!.
How could I not enjoy reading this story!!. Always the same, but where she gets her inspiration from, I have no idea!!.

3.75 || This was a super fun and festive read that once again reminded me of how lucky I am to live in the Lake District. The slow burn romance was very sweet and the escapist cosy vibes were immaculate. I wish there was slightly more depth to the descriptions of nature and a bit more tension in the romance but overall it was a lovely read for the festive period.

What a heartwarming Christmas romcom with a stunning wintry setting in the lake district.
Krys, or Mrs Christmas as she is known, is a lovely character and her love for Christmas and decorating and the magic of the season was so in sync with my own self that I felt like I was living out the magical storyline myself.
I really liked all the storyline with the Mountain Rescue Team. Clearly a lot of research went into this and I found it fascinating, especially about the search and rescue dogs.
A lovely read for a snowy day.

The Christmas Holiday is another fabulous and thoroughly enjoyable festive read from Philippa Ashley and if that stunning cover doesn’t draw you in, then the story that awaits you between the covers most certainly will. Often books that claim to be Christmas reads have the merest mentions of allusions to the time of year that we all look forward to but in this wonderful read Christmas is mentioned in abundance and it couldn’t fail to be seen as our main protagonist Krystle is a seasonal buyer and she thinks about Christmas from the first of January right up until the big day itself. This is a story that will give you all the Christmas feels and get you excited for the preparations leading up to the big day but there is also a more human and emotional side as well as we learn more about Krystle, what motivates her and how her life has led her to the point at which we meet her. There was a fabulous balance between warmth, humour and at times there was a more serious side but it all weaved together so wonderfully as Krystle tries to show Max that Christmas is the most wonderful time of year and at the same time learns an awful lot about herself.

The main strand of the story revolves around Krystle who as I have mentioned is a seasonal buyer. She works very hard all year round sourcing decorations for department stores, garden centres and interior shops. She loves the buzz and excitement of her job but it is endless. But Krystle had a tough childhood moving from flat to flat with her Mum, there was a lack of money and regular school changes were common place. On a school trip to the Lake District she came across a house that was perfectly decorated for Christmas and which just gave her all the feels and a deep longing that one day she too would have a picture postcard Christmas house and the Christmas that she deserves. Fast forward many years later and Krystle is about to embark on a make or break holiday with her boyfriend Brett. They are renting Holly Manor in the Thorndale Valley in the Lake District and after 25 years she believes she has found the Christmas house which has long lived on in her heart and mind.

Brett is charming, handsome and ambitious but I could tell from the outset his mind was more on his career than Krystle. He came across as pretentious and self-obsessed. Krystle needs this break from her job as she is on her knees physically and emotionally and she hopes for a reset in her relationship too. Things get off to a disastrous start when Brett’s car ends up in a ford in a storm which was comical at some points but sad too as Krystle lost many decorations which held so many special memories for her. But said incident allowed for the introduction of Max who plays a pivotal role throughout the story. Krystle is left on her own as Brett goes to America for work and that certainly wasn’t in the plan. But there was no messing around which I loved and through one thing and another Brett shows his selfish and unreliable side and it allows for different avenues of the plot to open up and be developed. I disliked Brett from the get go and was delighted to see what happened as it allowed more attention to be focused on Krystle and how she tries to make Max see that Christmas is a joyful time full of love, laughter, giving and fun times.

I adored Krystle as a character. I loved her enthusiasm, drive and ambition and that she was so resourceful and creative when it came to her job and that she loved seeing people happy. Max was the complete anthesis to her. He prefers to keep himself to himself living in his bothy near the mountains. He feels he is of no use to anyone and that he is better off hiding away from the world. He is a recluse who has many changeable moods but deep down the reader senses that there has to be a good and solid reason for why he has cut himself off from the world so to speak. Max rarely interacts with the villagers but the arrival of Krystle forces him to slowly come out of his shell and the further I read I was eager to know what had caused the residents of the village to view him as an eccentric character who needed support. Therefore, persuading him to join the mountain rescue team was a big thing.

I loved how the work of volunteer mountain rescue teams was explored throughout the story and it also helped establish a real sense of community and warmth of which Krystle soon became a part of. You could tell that she longed for a family and to feel really part of something. Her experiences in her childhood with her tough upbringing had damaged and altered her but I loved how she didn’t want this feeling to last through her adulthood and coming to the Lake District although for all intents and purposes it was to rescue her relationship with Brett really she began to discover an awful lot more. She suffers hurt and disappointment but tries to turn it into something positive and maybe perhaps all roads were leading her back to the Thorndale valley for many years and now is the time to grasp and hold on to the opportunities coming her way?

The trip was really Krystle trying to plan and curate the perfect Christmas and the perfect life to make up for when she wasn’t able to control things as a child and coming back to Thorndale was enabling her to lay some ghosts to rest. I loved how she threw herself into helping and organising things in the village and this is where the real festive feeling started to come into play. I could visualise the landscape, berries, trees, mountains and streams and nestled all amidst this was the village and placing herself at the forefront was Krystle. I enjoyed reading about how she sets about organising things and her experience in her job definitely came into full affect. But alongside this as mentioned in the blur she is doing her utmost to melt Max’s Grinch like heart and he too is showing her that things don’t always have to go to plan to take you somewhere magical. Will things go awry for the Krystle and her plans or will Christmas work its magic as it has done time and time again in the past?

The Christmas Holiday is an entertaining read that really got me in the mood for all things Christmas. Suffice to say I read it months in advance of the season because I couldn’t leave it lingering on my Kindle for too long. I am glad I did so because I loved following Krystle’s journey. It was captivating and sparkling with warm lovable characters although some do need to thaw out from when we first meet them. Krystle is exuberant and full of energy and you will be rooting for her that her childhood promise to herself will come true. More and more Christmas themed books in this genre are being published each year and although I don’t this market is being saturated there is a danger that you could miss out on a real gem of a read but don’t let that happen to The Christmas Holiday it deserves your time and attention. Amidst all the Christmas madness you’ll definitely be glad you chose it from the shop bookshelves.

I absolutely adore Phillipa's Cornish series and have read them all, so when I was offered a chance to read this Christmas novel I was really excited.

Set in the stunning Lake District, Krys and her boyfriend Brett rent a manor house for several weeks on the run up to Christmas. It's the perfect 'Christmas card house' which Krys had seen in her childhood and had always dreamt of sitting by the log fire.

Bad weather and Brett's stupidity leads to their car being a write off in a stream before they have even arrived! Luckily a local called Max helps them out. He's a strange character, hates Christmas and is lacking social skills! This being said,  he offers the couple a roof over their heads for the night.

When Brett is called back to London for work, Krys settles in to life in the village and agrees to help decorate the mountain rescue centre for the winter ball. She soon gets to know all the locals and they all warm to her.

As Krys is known as Mrs Christmas she is in her element but as Brett is once again called away for work will her Christmas be ruined or could this be the start of a new life?

A real feel good, heartwarming, fluffy romance which did have me shedding a tear.

I don't read many romances, but Phillipa Ashley knows just how to write them and is my go to author for these. An absolute pleasure to read.

Despite a few niggles here and there, I really enjoyed The Christmas Holiday very much.

The setting was just gorgeous, and I quickly liked the main characters. Krystle is a great and strong character, who I instantly clicked with.

Her boyfriend on the other hand felt a bit like a prop instead of an actual person. It was very quickly clear how it all would end. While I don't mind the romance bits being predictable, I still want the people to feel rounded.

Max was way better written, though at times I felt some of his development was a bit rushed. As I liked his personality a lot, I didn't mind it too much though.

I adored the Mountain Rescue Team background. I loved reading about their work and the spirit! And the four legged friends obviously were an instant draw for me as well!

So all in all a really good, but not perfect read!

I have mixed feelings about this book.

The beginning was great. Fast moving, interesting and a gorgeous setting for a festive story. But after the breakup, the pace of the book slowed down and unfortunately the book started to go downhill. The storyline was totally predictable and followed the mould of the majority of other festive novels I’ve read. I also found the diction used by some of the characters very awkward at times.

I think others have made similar comments but the arrival of Erin (Max’s sister-in-law) towards the end of the novel didn’t really work for me, especially some of the things she said to Max in grief. I thought it was an odd character to include so late in the book.

A nice, quick and easy read this one. It kept me engaged throughout.

Krys is a buyer and loves Christmas, she meets Max who has the complete opposite feelings about Christmas. All the characters were likeable and I enjoyed learning more about mountain rescue teams. I loved the idea of 'The Christmas Card House' - I'm sure there are plenty of those in the Lakes.
