Carlisle Troopers #2

Fire and Glass

Rate this book
State Trooper Casey Bombaro works too hard to have time for a love life, never mind a family. But when a missing persons case leads him to three scared kids and eventually their uncle—an old friend from Casey’s college days—all that changes.

Bertie Riley hasn’t seen his troubled sister, Jen, or his niece and nephews in years. Now suddenly Jen is gone and Bertie is all the kids have. Worried sick about Jen and overwhelmed by his new responsibilities, Bertie doesn’t know how he’s going to cope. He doesn’t expect Casey to step in and lend a hand, but his attraction to his old friend doesn’t surprise him. Years may have passed, but those feelings have never gone away.

For the first time in his life, Casey wants something to come home to. Bertie and the kids fit into his life like they are meant to be there. He struggles to balance a budding romance and reassuring the kids with investigating a rash of robberies and tracking down Jen. But when evidence suggests Jen might not only be missing but complicit in a number of crimes, will Bertie and the kids forgive Casey for doing his job?

Fire and Glass is book two in the Carlisle Troopers series by Andrew Grey. I think I loved this one even more than the first one. These two men were so sweet. And the children made my heart melt with all they’d been through.

Bertie Riley is a florist. His designs are unique and keep the shop he manages very busy. He lives alone with his adorable little dog. Three years prior, his mentally unstable sister cut him off from seeing her three children. He has tried his best to secretly keep track of them but hasn’t spoken or been able to hug them in three years.

Casey Bombaro is a state trooper and loves his job. But his job has become his life pretty much. He’s become a bit hardened and even more so, a loner. His co-workers stay away from him.

Casey and Bertie first met in college years before. Both were crushing a bit on each other but neither let on and then Casey left college and they haven’t seen each other since. When Casey is tasked at work with returning a found purse to it’s rightful owner, little did he expect to find three scared, hungry, abandoned children in the home. And that the discovery would lead him to their Uncle, his long lost crush from years before, his...”the one that got away!”

Bertie’s life is suddenly turned upside down. He is re-united with his two nephews and his niece who are all traumatized. He knows nothing about taking care of children. At the same time, Casey re-enters his life. To say he is overwhelmed is an understatement. But as the days pass, Casey is able to give them all the extra support they need while he continues to work the case. He’s not only looking for their missing mother, but also investigating a rash of local break ins.

First, I loved the way that Bertie was immediately supported, both by child services, but also by Casey. For Casey, seeing Bertie again has filled in a missing piece of his life. He’s suddenly smiling more. He feels softer. The circumstances definitely could have been better for them coming together again after all the years apart but he can’t imagine his life without them now.

This was so sweet. I loved them all so much. But also suspenseful as Casey worked the case from every angle, trying to put all the pieces together. And also, to keep Bertie and the children safe, whom had all begun to feel like his family. The epilogue was wonderful and left me feeling so happy for them all. Now I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, Fire and Ermine.

A very good story.

The premise of this story is excellent. It's not a matter of the one who got away but of a person on drugs and what they do for the drugs. This doesn't happen in books but in everyday life. It's a social problem that's being fought every day. Some survive but others don't. When children are involved, it makes it that much harder.

Andrew Grey delivers with another touching second chance story with great, easy to love characters. Fire and Glass features Casey, a State Trooper who works hard, is a good cop but isn’t known for his warmth and friendliness and Bertie, a sweet, hardworking florist who ends up in a position where he has to care for his sister’s children when she goes missing. These two knew each other in college but never had a chance to act on their connection. It’s a chance reuniting for these two, when it’s Casey that discovers the children all alone and finds out they are Bertie’s niece and nephews.

With Bertie’s sister Jenn missing and possibly connected to a string of robberies in the area, it’s not the ideal time to try to rekindle their connection, but it’s what happens anyways. These two clearly care about each other and have strong feelings for each other. It becomes clear to Casey that he’s been missing out on important parts of life and having Bertie and these kids as a part of his life is more important to him than he ever could have imagined.

I really enjoyed this book, going on this journey with Casey and Bertie and those sweet kids was very touching. There is a good mix of the romance side and the reality of the situation they are all in and it feels like a very real, genuine story. I loved seeing Casey find what he wants in life and he sure doesn’t let anything stand in his way, even when Bertie has some doubts. He truly steps up and is such a great man. It was very easy to love these characters and just want them to find happiness. I also liked how the situation was handled with Jenn, her behavior had some serious consequences and it doesn’t get overlooked or sugarcoated but the kids are safe and happy. A very enjoyable read that made my heart happy!

Casey and Bertie knew each other in college for a semester. Casey struggled in college and left for Navy right before Bertie got up nerve ask him out. They felt like got away, but now years later they are reunited.

Bertie's called by Casey because his sister has left her kids alone and unattended for a week. Casey was returning her purse when he found the three kids Philip, Jolie and Beau all alone and scared hungry as well.

Casey works with the troopers to figure out where Jenn is but it's not good when they figure out that she is involved with drugs and is off her meds self-medicating with other stuff.

Bertie takes the kids even though he's scared that he might do something wrong or when his sister shows back up will take them like she did years ago and not let him see them again. However he puts it all online taking care of her kids and he loves.

Casey has not always been the best when it comes to work and stuff because he's missing a bigger picture and he finds that piece or picture rather that he's missing when Bertie and the kids come into his life. I absolutely loved this so much. The doggie was adorable as well.

I loved reading this and didn't want to end. It took me a bit to get this with Amazon not shipping it like they were supposed to and the mail screwing it up by putting this in another person's mailbox but I finally got it and read it and it was perfect months of waiting for this was worth it.

Heartwarming Follows Heartbreaking

This is another of Andrew Grey's contributions to outstanding MM romances with children deeply involved in the plot. We got a clue of this one in the closing chapter of a previous book in the series and when this one came out I gobbled it immediately.

Casey the fireman and Bertie the caretaker are exceptionally well drawn as are the three siblings Bertie has to care for as a result of his sister, their mother, disappearing.

You can gather where this is going by simply reading the blurb, which is quite detailed. You can also gather where this is going by simply getting the book and being enraptured.

Another good-feels Carlisle romance. :)

Two notes:
1) 'Beau couldn’t argue with any of Casey’s assessment.'
Whoops! This should read, 'Bertie couldn’t argue with any of Casey’s assessment.'

2) 'Carrie married Kenneth Grant'
So Carrie (whatever her surname had been) became Carrie Grant ... that tickled my funny-bone!

Not Quite the Story I Expected

The storyline is well written and the plot interesting, but the style feels a bit primitive as though this book was written earlier in Andrew’s career? Decent character development and supporting cast, though the dialog and character interactions sometimes feel awkward. The story ends well, on a positive note with a definite promise for the future.

The State Trooper and the designer florist !
Floral design expert, Bert/Bertie,

doesn't see much of his sister Jenn and her three kids, Phillip, 10, Jolie, 5, and Beau, 4, due to her attitude. He has a

King Charles Cavalier, named Smidgen, and leads a busy, but quiet life.
State Trooper, Casey,

has a cute house with lots of beautiful gardens. He knew Bertie in High School, but then he joined the Navy.

On the job, Casey calls Wyatt for backup, as well as Donald, for the situation he found, with three children home alone, where the Mom hadn't been seen for many days. They call the kids uncle Bert.
This slow burn romance of Casey and Bertie is also a story of robberies, a drug ring, complete with investigating, tips,

information and its a beehive of a mystery. There is a mix of Jenn and the bad guys, probably in cahoots.

The children are sweet and deserve a better life, and now Bertie will provide their safety and comfort.

Casey is involved greatly in the homey type of life surrounding the kids new home life. Bertie is calm and sensible, and cares deeply for the children, and also for Casey. Whether they end up together, they still don't know right away, but we'll see the slow journey of care turns to love.
We get to see how the men care for the kids, each one is different, but both know what to say and do.

Later, after many talks

and information gathering, there is a break they needed. Casey has terrific senses when it comes to solving this messy case.

The epilogue is special.

ENJOY !

This was good addition to the “Carlisle Troopers” series. Who doesn’t like a hot cop who likes kids? In this one, Bertie is a floral designer who suddenly finds himself caring for his young niece and two nephews after his sister abandons them. They bring chaos, sadness, and even a bit of happiness as the cop who finds them is an old friend (and crush). Casey is a crotchety loner but a very good cop. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get along well with the other cops because of his attitude. But finding Bertie again after years, and helping him deal with the kids and their missing mom helps him become a better person.

There is a lot going on in this story - drugs, robbery, child abandonment, love and romance. But there is a HEA ending that satisfies.

Recommended: Yes! Add this one to your Andrew Grey shelf.

Timing Choices

CarlisleTroopers2

Finding out where you fit is always a challenge. For state trooper Casey Bombaro, he found his calling, but the rest of his life still needs work. He understands his job responsibilities but is sh*t on the dynamics.

Being asked to return a found purse to its owner is a community service act, but finding three children on their own in their house kicks his protective instincts into action. Their mom is missing and their uncle comes to get them.

Bertram Riley is estranged from his sister, following complications from an accident she had, that changed her personality. He hasn’t seen his niece and nephews for three years, but he hasn’t stopped loving them. He accepts emergency custody and takes them home.

Bertie and Casey know each other from a long time ago, when nothing happened between them. Meeting again now, under pressure, seems unlikely to promote romance. But, three kids is a lot of change in one go, and Casey won’t back away. Bertie is still attracted to Casey, who feels the same and wants to keep the kids safe.

It takes time and cooperation to ease the kids’ fears, find out what happened to their mother, and what kind of mess she is in. And, it takes honesty and candor to get the adults lined up.

Good story.

I know it's mostly unrealistic, but I just love the way the author writes stories with kids. They aren't little hellions, but they aren't perfectly well-behaved either. You feel so bad at the situation most of these kids are coming from, but you feel good that there are people in the world who really will try to help. It's maybe a bit rose-colored glasses, but it just makes me feel good. When you add two nice guys to the mix who are falling in love with each other and with the children, it's a sweet comfort read.

Got all my emotions going with this story!

I started with anger that a mother would do that. Worry that the mother couldn't be found. Sorry that a fight between a brother and sister caused a 3 year rift. Hope that Bertie can be the parent the kids need. Scared for all concerned. Happy tears for Casey, Bertie, and kids to become one big loving family together at last. YEAH! THANK YOU, ANDREW! ENJOY!

Kids and Hearts at risk!

Three young kids abandoned by their Mom are discovered at their home by State Trooper Casey. A call to their Uncle Bertie gets an immediate positive response. Enjoy how Casey and Bertie, friends in college, reconnect as Bertie takes his nephews and niece to his home, support each other during these uncertain times, and savor kisses and steamy moments together!!!

This was my second reading of this book. It was purely accidental as Amazon KindleUnlimited doesn’t delete them from my choices when I return them, or even put them in a different area.
That being said I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Yes there were tears and was totally invested in the story from start to finish.
Andrew wrights a bloody good book and I have him on my FOLLOW list.

Fragile as glass, but tempered by fire

Author Andrew Grey has created a series of love stories, each unique and filled with challenges. Not typical man meets and falls for another man, but life stories about complex lives where love blossoms.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. As usual from Andrew, a sweet story, and for this series, a few adventures thrown in. The descriptions of the three children being found can be upsetting reading, but it does work out as per other similar stories.

The relationship with the two main protagonists is low angst amidst the mystery and adventure that the romance is set in, and the history between the two makes the fairly quick reconnection understandable.

Donald, the Child Social Services worker from the Carlisle Cops series, appears in this book, and if you're familiar with that series then you'll know the environment that this series is set in already. Wyatt from the first book of this series also features, but there's enough in the book to be able to pick up context of the various characters that are introduced without affecting the story.

Oh wow this series just gets better. It is book 2 in Carlisle Troopers or Book 7 in Carlisle Cops but can easily be read as a stand alone.
( but you will want to read them all)
Casey is a trooper that takes his job a bit too seriously and can be a real butthole. He is sent to return a lost purse that little does he know will really shake up his life. He finds three young children that have been home alone for days living on peanut butter and jelly. He finds an Uncle that turns out to be a long lost friend from college that could have been the one that got away.

Bertie is a florist that excels at his job. He puts his sll in work thrn goes home. Then he gets a call that changes his life. His sister is missing and her three kids were left alone.
He takes them in and quickly falls in love with them.
I did too. Casey, Bertie, kids, dog all of them.
There is a lot going on and it’s so , we’ll how do I put it on words? Good? No. Heartfelt, page-turning, intriguing and beautiful.Plus I could really relate to Bertie and his emotions on having the kids. His feelings were spot on because I feel all that being in a very similar situation raising my sister’s son. I worry if it’s too much, if I’m doing a good job and then there’s the guilt of not wanting to give him up if it were to come to that. Pretty much what Bertie voices. Very heartfelt and real.
I love second Chance, kids, animals, suspense and romance that’s more sensual than sexual. Oh and florists, snd of course men in uniform. We have it all with tons of feels.
