I was blissfully ignorant of a book, usually translated into Human languages as The Gospels of Satan, until it was stolen from the Great Library.

My twin sister, a Senior Scholar, showed up at my door and asked me to help her retrieve the cursed book. It’s magical, priceless, and in the wrong hands might be dangerous.

It could be anywhere in thousands of Worlds, but the logical place for the thieves to sell it is the Great Marketplace at the Crossroads of the Worlds. Not out in the open, but in the shadows known as the Night Market, where the buyers and sellers don’t mind disposing of a body or two.

I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.

As to my other interests, I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL to show for it. I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I haven’t done enough of it. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I’d like to see Banff.

The book starts with Diana helping her sister recover a book stolen from the Great Library, the story was OK, but the author found a few ways to annoy me. There were times when some of the decisions really didn’t make sense e.g. In the first half of the story Diana and her sister need to return to the Library, but choose a ridiculous route. This seemed really contrived and irritated me for a big chunk of the book, it was a bit like me needing to get from Birmingham to London, but I’m a bit worried by the motorway so I decide to go via North Korea, Afghanistan and Ukraine. The author may have good reasons for including the journey in the story, but she could have though of a better way of doing it.
Overall it wasn’t a bad read, but it did frustrate me, which is why I have given it two stars.

It felt like the book was missing a soul. I didn’t get a sense of the story and characters in the world. It was straight into action with everything else left out or glossed over. It was the same world and heroine as book 1, but book 2 was like a cheap knockoff that broke when you started using it.

RATING: 3.5 STARS

Night Market by BR Kingsolver, the second book in the Crossroad Chronicles series and the sequel to Family Ties, is another entertaining and engaging urban fantasy title. If you like the author’s other series The Rift Chronicles or Rosie O’Grady’s Paranormal Bar and Grill, then I think you’ll enjoy these books. At the time of writing this review, it’s available to read for free on Kindle Unlimited (so make sure you check it out if you’re a member).

In my review for Family Ties, I asked the universe for a book that focused more on Karina (Diana’s sister), and my wish was granted. In this book, Karina asks her sister for help as she is hunting a rare and powerful tome that was stolen from the Great Library. Together, they work towards finding it, bringing them to the shady and secretive Night Market at the Great Marketplace of the Crossroads of the Worlds.

The character development in this book is fun. Despite being nearly identical, Karina and Diana couldn’t be more different. Diana is a warrior who wears her hair short, loves working with her hands, and is more interested in common sense and comfort than vanity. Karina, on the other hand, is a scholar who loves her books, has a bit of a highborn attitude at times, and can be prone to superficial tendencies (Diana had to make her sister tone down one of her glamors before they went out disguised as common folk). This makes me even more excited to learn about their parents - I’m really hoping we get to see more of them soon. I want to learn more about their abilities, and how that played into the various abilities their children inherited.

The world building was interesting in this book. Instead of learning about different worlds, BR Kingsolver introduces readers more to each of the world’s inhabitants. Diana and Karina come across many people in their hunt for the book - I appreciated the variety of species that were covered. It was also interesting to learn about the different cultures of the worlds they Walked through. There are multiple mini-lessons interspersed throughout the book that covers the level of technology each world has, as well as their system of government and the types of magic users they may encounter. With the sheer scope of worldbuilding in Night Market, it is understandably a bit hard to go in-depth into everything so that was a disappointment as a reader. I have loads of questions about things like the Kaminesky scale that I want to be answered!

In my opinion, Night Market is an enjoyable installment to the Crossroad Chronicles series, and to BR Kingsolver’s larger catalog of works. There were some minor issues, but nothing that seriously impacted my enjoyment of the read or that would convince me to not read future installments (I’m hoping that all three siblings will work together in future books and that maybe their parents will make a larger appearance). I would recommend this book to adult urban fantasy readers, especially if you enjoy books by Patricia Briggs, Lisa Shearin, or Ilona Andrews.

Night Market (2022) 259 pages by BR Kingsolver

Diana's twin Karina is looking for a book that was stolen from the Library. One of the leads is that it may have come to the Marketplace at the Crossroads where Diana has her shop and asks her for help. The first place to look is the Night Market where these stolen, high ticket items would likely be sold. Locating the item brings trouble, retrieving the item trouble, getting it back to the Library even more trouble. The thieves had to have inside help. Those accomplices have to be found.

Plenty of opportunity for Karina to show how badass she is, and still isn't nearly as badass as Diana. Diana gets peeved when people are keeping information to themselves. Especially when these ulterior motives put her and her sister at additional risk. There are already the thieves out there that want to keep the Library from recovering its book.

Lots of action. The sibling dynamic is great. A little bit of mystery. 4.4 stars.

Our protagonist, Diana, is who I want to be when I grow up! I don't mean the talent to craft fabulous jewelry and effective blades, or the range of magical bad-assery, (though I'd dearly love to be able to create such spectacular sounding jewelry!) No, I mean Diana's ability to quickly evaluate a situation, then move on to doing what needs to be done in the most sensible steps possible.
I’m further impressed by the frequently changing backdrop of interlinked worlds a 'Walker' such as Diana brings us to visit. The author’s imagination lets me see so many places I’d never imagine into existence. Some of them are just quickly sketched descriptions, appropriate for a waystation or a transit point. In others we get enough added detail to understand key points of the political, economic and social structure.
OK, enough going on about the author's imagination and writing skills! My one criticism is that the ending is quite abrupt. It was as if the teacher said “pencils down” and the book just stopped. Next time, more please!

2022 bk 321. An action packed fantasy of life as a Walker/magic user and double the fun with a pair of very intelligent twins intent on solving a theft that transcends the different worlds. Interesting concepts, loved the relationship between the sisters, and how they used their skills to get them out of trouble. Am looking forward to others in this series.

Meh, it's just not my kind of book. The world(s) doesn't feel real at all, mostly cardboard, not even painted. The story isn't engaging and I don't really care about the MC

Night Market
The Crossroad Chronicles, Book 2
4 Stars

What a great day. I received a newsletter notifying me of Night Market's release and spent the whole day reading it. I really love how well this author writes family. In this 2nd adventure, Di helps her twin sister, Katrina, catch a thief and retrieve a stolen book from the Great Library. Their story takes us to several new worlds. We meet more Elves and learn more about what makes Di special. It was a really great read, and I found it hard to put this book down. Loved all the action scenes!

I really hope to see the triplets work together on our next installment. I'd like to see what they can do together. Kinda wondering where this series is going and how many books there'll be, though I'm guessing not a trilogy.

When someone decides the great library’s rare and valuable devilish tome needs a new owner, the rumor is its headed to Crossroads. This gives librarian Karina an opportunity to visit her merchant twin sister, Diana, as well as search for an available man while she tries to find out who has the book and where. Since I couldn’t have my life back, it was a toss-up if this reader wanted the book found or an apocalypse.

Fast paced with a lot of action.

Diana and Karina are identical twins. Both are half elfin. Very close twin connection. Both are World Walker. (That is they can move between worlds at will) But very different life goals and interests.
Diana is metal smith making fine jewelry and very high end functional swords., daggers, etc. She owns a shop in the Crossroads Market were many world come to trade. She was mercenary with her brother Bjorn troops. A very good person to have at you back and an experienced Bobby guard.
Karina went the scholarly route. She is a senior scholar for the Great Library. A very refined library thought out the more advanced worlds.
When a valuable and potentially dangerous book is stolen Katrina is sent out to retrieve it. She drafts her sister Rains for her Great Market savvy, connections, and martial knowledge and skills.
Let the fun begin! How do you say no to your twin. Chasing information through the Market place, across worlds. Finding the moles in different organizations. Is action packed.

B.R. Kingsolver is a writer I read without delay. Every book as soon as it comes out. The crossroad chronicles worlds are as varied and wild as the situations the lead half-elf Diana finds herself in. The second book includes more time with Karina, Diana’s twin and great library senior scholar. They are on the trail of a stolen book and travel through worlds fighting to keep the book from dangerous hands. Diana is a typical Kingsolver female lead, strong funny and built to last. I hope more is to come soon!

Well written and fun!

Night Market is the second book in this series, and it is just getting better. The world building has taken on more shape, and the characters are becoming more developed. It's interesting that the personality of the MC is shown in contrast to that of her identical twin sister. As for the plot, well they spend most of the book chasing their tails (tales?) like a golden retriever. And like a golden retriever, they have a great deal of energy and fun doing it. A really good read, and I'm looking forward to the next book.

another winner

You really can’t miss with this author. Good plot, excellent characters…just all around good read.

It’s light on romance which is fine by me, but I know some people care. Lots of action/battle scenes which, again, is fine by me.

Since it’s second in the series, I’m gonna assume you already know if you like this world & characters. So if you liked the first, you’ll like this.

I am really enjoying this series

A bad book brings Diana and her twin sister Karina the scholar back together again, a book has been stolen from the Great Library, imagine the fines for that must be horrendous, and so begins a romp through worlds by the sisters as they try and recover it, will they find the book, how many worlds total will they visit on their travels, will their food eat them, read the book and find out!

Always love BR Kingsolver's books!

Thus is the second book in the Crossroads Chronicles and just as good as the first one. Always love it when there's a different world that she's writing about, each one has it's own ways and quirks and you almost feel like you've been on a bit of vacation there.
So, yes, another fascinating tale, and if you'll excuse me I'll be in my room starting book 3!

Night Market

I love a book about sister. Even better they are both strong and capable. With a good sense of humor, I love the idea of Walkers. And all the different worlds. This series is just a glimpse I'm to a complicated life of magic and family relationships. Fighting. Stealing. Crimes. Still no solid love interest or HEA for Diana. I do not mind at all that she isn't wandering after a man. But she's not a nun either. An easy 4 stars as I loved every minute.

Action Packed

I love the world(s) building in this book. Sisters Diana and Karina kick butt and save the day. It is so nice to read a paranormal/ fantasy story without the endless romance and chapters filled with sex. And the ladies win without much help from the men. Definitely recommend.

It was good *spoilers*

I enjoy it as I did the last one. This one was cool because you got to see more of the relationship between the twins this time. It did drag in parts but it wasn't so bad that I'd stop reading. Ending was good but would've like to know why they were stealing the book! I didn't feel like that question was answered.

Another great book

I enjoyed the second book as much as the first. Lots of excitement. There were parts I got a little frustrated with the twins. Looking forward to the next book. Love the writing style of this author, she never disappoint.

Bouncing through worlds

As I read the story, many times it crossed my mind that it was similar to reading an extended role playing. The characters and magic are interesting and I hope there is a next book in the series.

good fun adventure - yet again!

This series is really good fun, easy going without being «stupid». The writing is good, magic system fun and world building is inventive - i like the «walker» aspect. I’d say this is a 4,5 star for me, but rounded up.

Everything by this author is worth reading if you like different worlds and strong female characters. This is book 2 about a half elf jeweler who can walk worlds. The world is drawn in depth and pulls you in. I love that she is a twin and will do whatever to support her sister.

clever and fun

This book was a departure from B R Kingsolver’s other books and was immense fun. With a selection of worlds to chose from the sisters walked from one to the other, always knowing where they were in relation to the adjacent Worlds.
Great read and absorbing.

Five stars for a book well written without many of the punctuation/spelling/grammar errors found in books sold today. Well written plot that is original and a great read.

Awesome read

Fun plane read. I enjoyed seeing Diana’s relationship with her sister in this book after seeing the one with Bjorn in the first book. Fast paced and great action. Will definitely pick up book 3 if there is one upcoming.

A Good Follow Up

This is a good series 👍: pure entertainment, good characters, enjoyable action, nasty villains. It won't win the Nobell prize for literature; who cares its good fun.

As a series, I don't think this hangs together as well as her other series' that I've read. The first book was better (for me), and other than the main character and her immediate family you could pretty much read this as a standalone rather than linked to book 1.
