Tower Apocalypse #2

Tower Apocalypse 2

Rate this book
It only took the end of the world to find my calling.

Unfortunately, getting rid of humanity's biggest internal threat was just the start of my trials on Gaea. Just a few short days after my friends and I defeated Roman, the System gleefully informed us about a hidden world event. We have no idea when it'll strike, nor do we know when the two alien species brought to our corner of Gaea will appear. Even worse, Boris and Miki have vanished. With the two brutal criminal bosses lurking in the wings, no human is safe.

Finally, I noticed something strange about Gaea. The world seems incomplete and hazy around the edges. Something big is happening behind the scenes, but we've only barely scratched the surface.

Interesting progression and the lore bits for the GMs of these "games" as well as insight into some machinations

Will continue on this adventure

Fast-paced and exciting throughout

So were the Three compelled to make the choices that they did? Or would they have made those choices regardless, given the option? Is the Great Game separate from what the System oversees on Gaea? And what is Parfanel’s objective?

Now that Devin, and humanity, have gone through this experience, will they come upon even stronger foes as part of the consequences from the epilogue? Will there now be another entity in control? Will humanity be able to consolidate and hold onto the gains that they’ve earned? And what insights will Devin’s experience give him into the workings of the System?

While good....the authors do not read each other's work

Two p!aces that really annoyed me. First, MR and gf go the the tower. MC wants his squad but gf wants it to be a date. She warns she will run the squad off. When date turns out bad as the floor was not designed for two people, she complains that he forced her to come and how could he put her in danger like that. Second, a unique sword in the form of a huge sword is discussed as being light as a feather. In battle the sword was so heavy the person struggled to lift it one handed.

4.5 stars. Overall it held my attention and moved well. There were no critical failings, although writing good sidekicks is an art and this book shows an incomplete mastery of that. The summons aren't the most annoying I've seen however, so it only cost a 1/2 star. It ends in an interesting place, so we'll see where the next book goes.

This novel is rife with the same problems as the previous volume. There are some amusing spelling errors (borrowed instead of burrowed) that occasionally pull you out of the narrative. There's some... not quite misogyny, but apparently only Humans bring "girls" onto the battlefield. The other races remark on Devin bringing his woman to the battle, and later how she can really fight. It's just a bit trite.

The book starts right where the last one ends with Devin waking up after the last battle.

During the book we find out that humanity has been slacking. The other 2 races we know of are much better equipped and seem to be a good deal stronger. The races near them are the Dwergar (half are dwarves and the other half are giants) and the Darklings (Dark Elves). The Dwergar are a peace loving race, while the Darklings are evil. The Darklings are led by 3 princes, we meet 2 of them during this book, and they are both evil. One of them has an ability, Seance, that lets him reanimate the ghost of bosses if he dealt the most damage, did the killing blow, and acquired the corpse. He managed to pick up 2 big bosses so far (manticore and giant scorpion) and uses them to great effect. Part of the tension in this volume is the need to keep him from getting the final hit on the World Boss and adding it to his collection.

Speaking of World Bosses, humanity apparently missed out on 2 world bosses, but the 3rd one will be our big bad for the novel. Humans and Dwergar meet up and decide to work together to stop the Darklings who everyone agrees are quite mean. Just as they decide this, the Brood Mother shows up and we queue the epic boss fight.
Devin does in fact land the final kill and the system tells him to hang around for a bit, nudging everyone else to leave. When he does the system turns it into another skeletal living armor so he can have 3 summons of the same type giving him a hidden "jackpot" bonus. He names his new, female, summon Tiamat. His first summon, Reinhardt a Skeletal Lord greets her nicely, while Shai-Hulud the armored wyrm was a bit rude.

Later we learn that Devin got this special summon is because Parfanel bribed the system (who is kept prisoner) with freedom if she helps humanity and Devin Cain in particular.
Devin ends the novel headed back to his village with a 24 hour countdown on all his loot boxes from his new perks.

Unfortunately, Parfanel gets found out in the Epilogue and a council shows up and makes him bet on which race will be culled next. He picks Darklings since he is betting on Humans winning it all and the Dwergar are their allies.

The author has no integrity or cohesion. In the first book of this apocalyptic fantasy story, changed the very definition of good and evil, demons and saints, favored the antagonists without any consequences. In this second book, destroys the very definition of a "safe zone", which should have been a place where players could not be attacked, killed, kidnapped, used as sacrifices. If this is not enough, the author changes the very system of "looting" a monster or opponent that gets defeated. Instead of gaining the loot of the opponents defeated, the author creates an auction where the items that should have gone to the people that defeated the monsters or the humans that betrayed humanity had as weapons, money, or items.
The thing is, if the author changes the "rules and conditions" just to fit the present plot arc, then what is the point of everything else that has been written up to this point? If there are no limits to the author's lack of integrity, then this apocalyptic-fantasy story, might end up being a basketball game, romance, dictionary-manual...
I do not recommend this second book or this series...

fun

A well written and entertaining continuation to the series, however I found myself more interested in the outcome then the actual events at times and so skipped a lot. Despite that, it was fun. 3.5 stars rounded up!

Kinda disappointing

It felt like half the book was just mostly filler, I started skimming through half the book before it picked up and even that was an over compensation for the first half. Bah humbug is all I am going to say.

After the last book they got rid of the big bad, and now they have a race for an enemy. They also made a powerful friend.

What a waste of time. Barely any progress, terrible intercharacter relationships - especially the "romance". Nothing happens. As in absolutely nothing happens.

DNF 66% in.

This one is interesting and we get a bigger insight into the mechanics as well as the behind the scenes. I do enjoy that more and more "behind scenes" issues are now becoming apparent. I love the humor of the summons and the dynamic of character growth. Its interesting how each book has a new villain of the arc and the confrontation of it.
