Leveret Wong, a touch adverse rabbit shifter and warlock, can help anyone who comes into his magical bakery with everything from sleep inducing raspberry buttercream to scones that can make a person fall in love. The only person he can't seem to fix, however, is himself.
Eliot Rand, the dog shifter of the Chinese Zodiac is sick of living under the harsh rule of the stars. He wants nothing more than to take back control of his life, find his Fated Mate, and reject him, once and for all. Everything is going as planned, up until he starts working with the sweet, nerdy, funny, yet damaged and withdrawn rabbit shifter.
When destiny is ruled by the stars, fated mates takes on a whole new meaning, and a whole new dangerous design.
Set in the same Universe as The Zodiac Werewolf, this is the first book in the Shifters of the Chinese Zodiac MM Romance Series. Readers can expect sarcastic humor, creative mythology, themes of hurt/comfort, enticing villains, fated mates, morally grey love interests, male male relationships, and slow burn love that turns scorching hot.
While there are many moments of fun and spice and fabulous dessert descriptions, this is still a dark work of fiction. Please check the author's website for CWs.
The Year of the Rabbit took on a very unique angle regarding the shifter world. While it was a slow start, once I got into it I really enjoyed it. I adored Levy. He's a Beta who is half Warlock Shifter (a rabbit shifter). For rightful reasons, he dislikes and does not trust Alphas. We also meet Elliot, an Alpha Dog shifter and Jun who is a Professor and a Snake shifter. The world Anni creates is super interesting and makes you want to learn more.
I did find it confusing when in the last third, the book went from being only Levy's POV to a dual POV with Elliot. That threw me off for a bit. Another aspect was the relationship between the three, Levy, Elliot and Jun. It seemed like it might have been first Jun/Levy - they also seemed to have more chemistry as well, but it shifted slightly when Elliot was introduced and the story progressed. Fo a moment, I thought it was going to be MMM potentially (personally, I am glad it wasn't). I loved the aspect of fated mates as well. Elliot, willing and ready to kill for Levy, was sexy. Speaking of sexy, the spicy moments were good.
There are dark themes and trauma that are mentioned and experienced by the MC, but I would not say it is a dark, dark story. It does deal with heavy material, though that may be triggering for some. Overall, it was enjoyable, and I liked the unique way the Chinese Zodiac was incorporated into the shifter world. I also got a very manga-esque vibe from the story, which I liked.
I look forward to the next book in the series.
**I received an ARC and provided my honest review**
Author here! So excited to share this story with everyone! This is, arguably, one of the darker stories I've written - at least as far as being emotionally dark. The violence and gruesomeness level is much lower than, say, Devil in the Details. And the abuse is less than, say, All In, but the angst and themes are much heavier and more personal and complex, which made it feel much darker for me to actually write. Still I hope it's the right amount of humor in its effed-up-ness, and the right amount of sweet in between the angst.
On a lighter note, it might be obvious from some of these random little baking tips about fixing meringue or egg to fudge texture ratio, but baking is a hobby I LOVE, and it was so much fun getting to weave in various desserts. Even if, admittedly, this book left me constantly fighting the need to grab a snack, haha!
That said, welcome back to Graves Academy, and I hope you enjoy the start of this new series! Unlike my usual more serial-esque style, this series will all end in HEA/HFN, so just know there's light at the end of even the darkest tunnels
Here we have Levy, a beta warlock/rabbit shifter mix, who is 22 and works in a bakery run by his very powerful family. He did not know he was a part of the Shifters of the Chinese Zodiac, and was put into college by his mother.
His unbeknownst to him fated mate, Eliot, who is a dog shifter, also a member of the Chinese Zodiac shifters, ends up working for the bakery while Levy is in school. He is actually a golden retriever shifter, so awwww.
There is also Jun, a professor at the school and a snake shifter in charge of all the Zodiac Shifters.
Due to what Levy is, otherworldly beings want him. Jun and Eliot actually want to protect him, but due to what happened with a werewolf, Levy does not trust alphas. Rightly so.
While this was advertised as being dark, this was more dark-lite. There was some killing and murdering, but it was not that bad. Also, this should have been a mmm. I felt more sexual chemistry between Levy and Jun and Eliot and Jun than I did when it was just Levy and Eliot.
Just as a heads up for future readers, this was single POV until around chapter 12, then all of a sudden, it became a dual POV book. That was odd and not expected.
All in all, the whole storyline about how the Zodiac animals were all shifters and connected was cool.
This dark romance was a page turner. Please check the TW because there is some heavy material. I really liked Levy, Eliot and Jin. I did think we were getting another mmm and I eould have been open to that, but I'm happy where it ended
I had high hopes for this at the beginning because I loved the character of Levy, a neurotic, "delightfully damaged" as Jun calls him, 22-year-old beta rabbit shifter/warlock and dessert nerd who works at his family's enchanted bakery. I also loved the worldbuilding of the Chinese Zodiac shifters, which isn't something I see often in the A/B/O world. And I loved how Levy was a stubborn, reluctant, touch-starved beta surrounded by greedy alphas.
But this is also why I usually hate love triangles; the MC always ends up with the love interest I hate. 😭
The opening chapter introduces Jun, a brooding snake shifter math professor who visits Levy's bakery and they have an undeniable sexual attraction, which is weird for Levy because his history of abuse has clouded his mating instincts. We're set up with all the tension to make you want Levy and the professor together, and then boom, the POV switches to a dual POV after we meet a second love interest, Eliot, a golden retriever shifter alpha who works with Levy at the bakery after he goes to business school.
In his POV he's struggling with knowing Levy is his fated mate since having an abusive entanglement with a past mate. He just plans on rejecting him till he finds himself falling for the charming, nerdy baker.
I took an instant dislike to Eliot the moment Levy and him met that I could not shake, and after the fated mates comment their chemistry felt forced. I skimmed the last half of the book because I was so disappointed I didn't get Levy/Jun.

They have run the bakery for hundreds of years and now it is his time. He needs a mate and a degree so his parents sign him up without asking him. How will he deal with it all? Will he get his degree? Will he find a mate? See where they will take you
Thank you for arc read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. I so need these in my life, all the wonderful little treats..yummy Recipes!?! It's a wonder that when Levy's anxiety is interfering with his spell casting. Right off page one poor Levy, because at twenty-two Levy's mother still treated him as if his was a gangly youth. Out from steam-roller-mama straight into the snakes path! Levy's day is going GREAT..not! Seems Levy is learn more then he was willing or wanted to know after forced into Grave's but as a beta under super moon was about to become intense. There is no wonder why Levy craves the frigid control, how truly utteringly a betrayal can cause that reaction. Being a thirst trap between two alphas, which was the least likely to hurt him? is it the zodiac alphas that is his co-worker/clasmate Eliot, the sweet golden retriever or his professor Jun, the homicidal snake? When Levy's past comes back to haunt him, in more then just the terrorizing memories. Having his family's craft turned against him and a Stockholm moment was a devastating thing. Eliot will do anything to protect the little rabbit, even if it's from his self, but can he get Levy to see that past the trauma of his thoughts? Darkness is dangerous, darkness is scary but in the right way it can also being on the excitable thrilling effects that is needed to push one over the edge.
I really wanted to like this book but overall it was just a complete miss for me, unfortunately. This book centered on the importance of the Chinese Zodiac Shifters but I still don't understand why they are important or different.
The 2 MCs Levy and Eliot had zero chemistry as anything other than friends, Jun had more chemistry with both of them and Levy had more chemistry with his rapist and Eliot had more chemistry with his dead lover.
Based on this I could never get into this book and the hints at Jun and Levy's dads past was vague but made everything between Levy and Jun seem a bit gross.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
So… this book was interesting to say the least. I really enjoyed it, although at times I didn’t know where the author was going with the story line, she took the time with the MC and got us where we needed to be. This was a dark and fantastic read. I’m completely smitten with the Snake and can’t wait to read his story. I really like that the author didn’t shy away from the abuse and how people cope differently. I can honestly say that I’ve I enjoyed every book that read from her and I can’t wait for the next.
This book started off really well. I really like the world building, the lore, the magic system. I really like the bakery and adding magic to the items. I even really like the creepy basilisk shifter Jun and the sweet but will kill for you dog shifter Eliot.
I absolutely loathed Levy. He was great in the beginning, I understood where he was coming from with his trauma TO A POINT. After the super moon I couldn’t stand him. He was more wishy washy than a dish washer if that’s possible. Not even sure he knew what he was so upset about. My opinion of him was even WORSE when he and Eliot completed their bond. That whole scene rubbed me the wrong way. I am ALL FOR that type of interaction, do not mistake me at all (have you seen ANY of the books in my history?!) HOWEVER all Eliot knows of Levy at this point is he was SA in the past and he’s afraid of touch and afraid of what Eliot did. Eliot has NO IDEA the kind of things Levy is into sexually. The whole thing came off wrong to me. AND THEN Levy has second thoughts during OMFG this dude instigated this whole interaction after Eliot told him to stop. The final nail in this whole messed up coffin for me was when he had to officially end his arrangement with Jun bc shocker he finalized his mate bond and instead Jun let’s him go and Levy says ‘ Was that it? Was this supposed to be my happily ever after?’ Im done. Stick a fork in me. This guy has a mate that WANTED TO REJECT THE MATE BOND BECAUSE HE DIDNT THINK LEVY WOULD WANT HIM BUT LEVY WOULDNT LET HIM and instead INSTIGATED THE INTERACTION THAT LED TO THE BOND and that’s how he’s going to react to losing one of the guys he’s messing with and keeping his mate? I know he’s a baker but you can’t always have your cake and eat it too buddy.
*Deep breath* there were a lot of parts of this I liked. But Levy ruined the book for me. If I wasn’t ARC reading this I would have DNF it. If I didn’t already commit to ARC reading the next I would not read it at all. I will go into the next with an open mind. In my opinion. Eliot deserved better.

If you like love triangles and arguing over who the character is better off with than this book is for you. I read this months ago and I am still super upset. The positive is that its a well written story that engages you quickly. I love and became attached to the main character. Its actually a spicy book and engages in sensory play, BDSM type elements, rope play, humiliation and fear kinks. What genuinely pisses me off 3 months after I read it is that the main character clearly ended up with the wrong guy. This character had more chemistry with his protector than with his fated mate. Wtf is that? It actually has great potential to be an MMM because the professor also had more chemistry with the main lovers than they had with each other. I am still upset, this book's ending gave me blue balls. The only thing that I can hope for is since the 2nd book is an MM about the professor the author will set it up so that the 3rd book will be an MMMM.

This was my first book by Anni Lee and I was delighted to receive an ARC for it. It was so good I binge-read ALL of her Zodiac Werewolf books immediately afterward because Shifters Of The Chinese Zodiac was so good!
Leveret Bernard-Wong is a sweet Rabbit shifter who would prefer to stay in the warm haven of his family's bakery, Toast of the Magi, than waste time doing anything else. But when his mother virtually tosses him into Graves Academy and a business degree, Levy has to adapt and overcome his reluctance. After finding out that his dark, mysterious and sexy customer is Jun, his Calculus professor, going to class seems like less of a hardship.
Confusion follows when a fellow student ends up working at the Magi, picking up the hours Levy had to abandon in order to attend class. It rankles at first, but Eliot Rand turns out to not only be a Dog shifter but an excellent baker as well. Levy and Eliot strike up a friendly companionship while they work side-by-side.
But things are never settled for long. Levy's past of being hunted like the prey animal he turns into during his lunar shifts made him skittish and scared. Predators, like his abusive ex, are inexplicably drawn to his warlock magic, and staying hidden behind physical and magical locks was the only way to be sure he wouldn't be hurt again. Despite his careful preparations and wariness, Levy is kidnapped and it is up to Jun and Eliot to come to the rescue. Spoiler: they do, but that's only the first HALF of the book!
With Levy and Eliot's connection and attraction growing stronger and deeper each day, and Jun's dominant and dangerous proposition to teach Levy more than just math, which man is the right one for the Little Rabbit?
I liked that this story wasn't just about the action, but the repercussions of a traumatic past. Through most of the story, I wasn't sure if Levy would end up with Eliot or Jun, but the emotions Levy experiences and works through are realistic and understandable. Anni's description of recovery through discovery is compelling and I CANNOT wait for the next book!
Trigger warnings: there is a kidnapping, references to past and intended SA, and bondage used as therapy.
This book was about 3 main characters, not just two like I originally thought. We first get introduced to Levy who is a baker at his family's bakery. He's half mage and half zodiac bunny shifter, on full moons and especially harvest moons his pheromones makes surrounding shifters go crazy with lust. He's used to not having a choice.
After we get introduced to Levy, we meet Eliot. Who is a zodiac dog shifter who starts working at the same bakery Levy works at. Oh yeah, Levy is also his fated mate.
Then! We meet Jun who is Eliot's and Levy's math professor. I honestly wasn't expecting his character to engage in the acts that he did but I'm now very intrigued by his character. I really hope he gets his own story someday.
I thought that the author was really creative with this book, I mean who wiuldfe thought to not only come up with Zodiac Shifters but to also hold them to different rules and guidelines than any other shifter. It was really interesting to me and I enjoyed all the differences that separated this book from any other shifter book.
As I said above I wasn't expecting all the twists and turns this book had to offer, they were really well done. I don't want to give anything away or to spoil anything so I'll keep this nice and sweet.
The only reason I didn't give this a 5 star is because this took a pretty dark and violent turn pretty quickly, I wasn't expecting it and I wasn't prepared. And poor Eliot!!.
I received a early copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book was dark and delightful all at the same time. I couldn’t stop reading it. It is has a bit more angst than I typically read but I don’t mind that every now and then as long as I am prepared. Please heed the trigger warnings because there is sexual trauma, both physical and mental in this book. These things have made a mark in our little rabbit shifter Levy and he has to work through those in order to get his HEA with his fated mate. Elliot has his own issues but he recognizes Levy for who and what he actually is: his fated mate. This book has an element of a triangle but not really either. It was actually a very interesting read. Jun is an interesting character. All of these are. This Chinese Zodiac shifter world is darker than I was expecting and very different from anything else I have read. I would definitely read more though. I have read darker and bloodier books so that didn’t bother me. I usually do have to read something a little lighter afterwards just to even things out. I did read an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Please make sure you check your trigger warnings before reading this book. The main character may be a cute little bunny but make no mistakes this is a dark romance.
I really loved the characters of this book. Levy our main character has been put through the wringer, however, is all the more sweet and devilishly dirty for it. Eliot comes across dopey and eager like his animal, but truly is wicked smart, caring, and just the right amount of dangerous. Then there is Jun. Where to begin with him. Damn is he hot! Dominant, dangerous, yet surprisingly safe. I am seriously looking forward to his book and hearing more about his playroom!
The romance was good also. Levy and Eliot may be fated mates but Levy didn't feel that pull right away. This caused Eliot to be rather piney and protective but Levy to not quite know why. When they finally had the talk, the sparks were amazing!
Getting into the only reason I rated this 4 stars. While not important to know anything about the Chinese zodiac, I feel that having a slight bit of background will help you to understand some aspects of this. I wish there had been just a bit more about the zodiac shifter rules explained as it would have enhanced the world building and my overall enjoyment of the story. This however, should not deter you from reading this if you enjoy dark romance as this is a solid book!!

So, I ended up down the MM rabbit hole with this author lately, and oh my god! Just inhaled this book so fast. This was such a totally different take on shifters than anything I've read before!
Basically, Levy is a beta mage/bunny shifter who works at a magical bakery, and some past trauma has him pretty terrified of Alphas. Enter his new coworker, a Golden Retriever shifter and his math professor, a creepy (but hot in a sinister way iykyk) snake shifter, and a full moon that amplifies pheromones and aggression
I read a lot of dark romance, so I'm used to heavy themes, but Levy somehow broke my heart and made me laugh at the same time, with all his trauma and sarcasm. It wasn't the darkest thing I've read, but definitely check triggers (Particularly around SA)
And don't even get me started on the dessert descriptions. I'm just glad someone brought donuts into the office today, because imagining the red velvet cookies had me fiending 😂🤤 (And the software engineer in me loved the math jokes, too)
It's hurt/comfort/Who hurt you vibes, a touch of fated mates (And that tortured fighting the urges 😍), some fear kink, light CNC, blazing hot spice, and somehow it's super sweet. I'm just buzzing. Loved this book!
Definitely recommend it if you like PNR at all and want something a bit different 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4.5/5 🌶🌶🌶🌶
I've read a fair share of shifter books, and this has one of the most unique take on shifters I've seen. But I'm giving three stars because although this book has an unusual shifter system, I feel like there wasn't enough explanation about what exactly is special about zodiac shifters. Given that the series is centered about zodiac shifters, there should be more detail about their history and purpose aside from having special blood and fated mates.
Plot-wise the book was pretty well-done. Going in the first part was a bit boring but it picks up speed halfway through, and has lots of action and romantic tension. Plus the book definitely deals with the darker sides of things.
A unpredictable story with great characters and amazing world setting. Anni Lee built a great paranormal world with its own set of rules which has shifters of different kinds, magic users, and of course normal humans. Among the shifters, there’s even a more specific kind called the Zodiac Shifters.
The Zodiac Shifters are fascinating, their world and history are different from all other shifters I've read. This alone makes the book interesting. But also, the story is great, interesting, and engaging. It has a bit of everything, is funny, has some angst, love, steamy parts, hurt, and comfort. As for the characters, they are relatable, well-developed, consistent, and believable.
What I liked most about it, is that is hard to guess what will happen. Most stories with fated mates are easy to predict, but Anni has you guessing throughout the entire book, and you can’t actually know for sure how it will turn out.
It is a book definitely worth reading, and I truly hope Anni will continue this series with the rest of the Chinese Zodiac.
As I said in my title this is a very intense book and you should pay attention to the warnings but if like me you occasionally want to walk on the wild side as it were then you will probably also enjoy this incredibly well written story. Anni Lee says in her remarks at the end of this book that she had a difficult time writing this book and I feel like she has done a terrific job of balancing the heavy things out with lighter stuff and just regular life. I also get what she says about reading things like this being cathartic and it’s like watching a scary movie so you can be scared when you know that you are actually safe. I really hope that Ms. Lee continues this new series.
I absolutely loved Anni Lee's Zodiac Werewolf series, where Jun and Levy (and the bakery) were first introduced, so I was excited to start this new series. I have to say that I don't like this one as much (yet) but I am still on board for more. Ms. Lee has such creative world-building and complex characters that they just draw you in. This book is a bit darker, but there is snark and some funny moments, also angst and pain. Do read the content warnings if you might have triggers. I was intrigued by Jun from his brief appearance in Zodiac Werewolf, and I am eager to read more about him.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
Before “Year of the Rabbit,” I’d never read anything by Anni Lee before. But I’m so very glad that I took a chance on her writing, because I absolutely loved this world she’s created. Chinese Zodiac shifters seemed like such a unique concept, and I thought it was really well done. I loved this story, which involved Levy, Eliot, and Jun. Levy was such a sweetheart, and I loved his gentle personality and quiet strength. Eliot was charming, and I loved how devoted he was to Levy. And Jun!!! He was a bit mysterious and intense, but he was also almost charismatic. It was an interesting combination that definitely worked for him. All in all, this was a fabulous read, and I will be looking into Anni Lee’s other works.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with year of the rabbit, but this was really something. I will start by saying that it’s important to check trigger warnings, some of the content was darker than I initially expected, the author explored trauma so well.
The book also had a really unique take on shifters and I loved that we were able to have characters with animals that aren’t usually found in these kinds of books - like Levy, who is a rabbit shifter.
I am an absolute sucker for fated mates, and this book did it so well. Touch him and die is a trope that lives rent free in my head. At one point, I did think this was going to progress into a MMM book, but I’m glad it didn’t and it took the route it did.
Overall, a fantastic read and I would highly recommend it to those who love MM content. Oh and the bakery, I just loved the whole idea of it. 5 stars.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review
Anni Lee did an interesting take on shifters. I’ve read over 400 shifter/paranormal romance books and around 300 dark romance books and I believe this is the first time I’ve ever read this type. Following the ABO universe loosely, Levy, who is a Beta, discovers he has a fated mate, Eliot, who is an Alpha. Additionally he’s a half blood (warlock/Shifter). But, more than that, he’s a Rabbit of the Chinese Zodiac, which comes with its own issues. The book digs through his trauma, bandages it, then wraps it up in a HEA? I gave four stars because the book is definitely unique for me, however the Jun/Levy arc made me feel like the HEA/fated mates arc was cheapened in the end. Especially since that part flew by in the last 15% of the book. Levy is also one of those MCs who begins to somewhat annoy you close to the end, with continually wishy-washy feelings and actions. However, if you LOVE angst, feeling your gut churn, and have a taste for some light BDSM, with a dash of spice, this will be a good choice for your next read. I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A dark paranormal M/M Romance, with RH aspects and fated mate bonds. Focused on shifters of the Chinese Zodiac this story follows multiple characters and their relations with one another, include past traumas, understanding shifters mate bonds, and hurt/comfort relationships. This story covers dark topics including S.A and kidnapping, and explores Dom/sub relationships, love triangles, age gaps, kinks and BDSM. It's a fascinating world with intriguing characters that all have their own darkness and desires. It's a great fast paced read with action, drama, suspense and spice.
Audiobook - new to me narrator who I really enjoyed. Just the right amount of emotion in the words. Story - great blurb, special zodiac shifters was a very interesting idea, and all the baking was intriguing. It was just a bit strange that Levy seemed to have more chemistry with Jun than with his fated mate Eliot. I think I would have preferred them all to develop a relationship with all three together, although that couldn't work according to the rules in this world. First in a series but fortunately no unpleasant cliffhanger.
I could not put this book down. It was magically sweet yet centered around a dark theme. Definitely check TW. This M/M book about healing and facing your fears was easy to read. Just make sure you have a delicious snack because the desserts will make your mouth water!
Levy is a beta warlock/rabbit shifter who works at the family run bakery. He has no idea of the Shifters of the Chinese Zodiac as his parents have kept him isolated away from it. Eliot is a dog shifter who ends up working at the same bakery, taking shifts while Levy is in school. He is a member of the Chinese Zodiac shifters. They meet and sparks fly between them when it is discovered they are mates. But Levy has a distrust of Alphas which causes some tension. With murders happening around the city, things become dangerous quickly and Levy finds himself the focus of the other shifters who want him for what he is.
What will happen when things come to a head? Will Levy be able to let go of the past and trust in Eliot and his heart?
This book thoroughly surprised me. I wasn't sure what I was expecting but it certainly delivered. There is a dark overhang to the story but there are so many areas where it is funny, kind, and surprising. More angst than I normally read but this worked. A great read.
Wow! This book ran the gamut of emotions. It got very dark and heavy in quite a few places, especially for anyone who has ever experienced sexual trauma before. However, Levy found a way to heal from this trauma and use that healing to form a beautiful relationship with Eliot. Although for quite a while there I didn't think that they were actually going to get together at all. So glad they both fought for it, each in their own ways. It made the ending that much sweeter. I also probably gained 10 pounds reading this story from all the snacks I kept craving. Everything baked in the book sounded absolutely delicious.
