This book is a lot of fun. It explores plurals of animals that don't always follow conventions and also what various groups of animals are called. All in rhyme and a little bit cheeky. If your kids loved any of the Oi Frog series they'll undoubtedly love this too.
Decent, competent art, "story" and characterisation are a bit loose (serious character has to deal with silly character's antics - classic archetypes but I felt each was just taking it in turn to say their lines, rather than interact). A sprinkling of "collective nouns are called a X" in there but it didn't feel central to the narrative.
I liked the last joke (if we can call it that) but the path there was "loose", as I said. Read it in a silly voice and react and the (young) kids will love it but it doesn't otherwise warrant re-reads or "charming book" status.
Ordinary I'd give a book that left me feeling that way three stars but it has geese and foxes in it so I'll bump it up to a generous four.
This story was fun. My 5 year old loved the illustrations and the geese being funny. I learned a lot about what you call a group of different animals. The rhymes were a little tongue twisting though and made tricky to read aloud.
First sentence: One goose is goose. And two goose is geese! Bill, will you please keep quiet?! I'm trying to teach!
Premise/plot: A concept picture book about collective nouns.
My thoughts: I really enjoyed this one. I loved the narration. Bill and Bruce just made me smile! I learned a few new-to-me collective nouns as well. For example, I learned about a BAND of gorillas. I definitely recommend this one. The illustrations were perfectly perfect.
I received a digital ARC of this book from the publisher for my honest review.
This fun book is all about animal plurals and told in a very lyrical, funny way. As one goose tries to teach, the other is lost in play and when even more animals get involved, it gets carried away. Great fun and good book for early readers.
Fun picture book except the part about the sheep....a bunch of sheep is called a flock, but the book states a bunch of sheep are just...sheep? (Maybe they wanted to save "flock" for the punchline at the end of the book...as in a flock of geese.)
The book was fun with few words and discussion of groups of birds, animals, and farm animals including the group name for each. Colorful illustrations and fun to read.
