Jack Slaughter's wife disappeared and his toddler daughter was murdered. What an awful thing for a man to come home to and it haunts him daily. He was a cop but now is a private investigator, sleeping in his office as he can't bring himself to live in the home where the crime happened. Every three months he receives a text that tells him where he can find his wife, never coming to fruition though.

There is a person who is killing women all over San Francisco and has been for three years and has not been found. Jack's previous partner Ray's wife ends up as one of the women missing. Even though Jack is no longer a cop, he vows to find Ray's wife. One of his cases as a PI is to find a missing wife of Carl Boyd. Are these cases linked? Jack hopes so and that if he finds Bonnie Boyd, he can find his wife Leah. Will he find Bonnie in time? Go get your copy of the book to find out!

I love a good murder mystery and this one was no exception. There was a lot of research and it was evident that the author is very familiar with the San Francisco area. I felt like I was there, experiencing what Jack was. The writing was such that I didn't want to put it down. If you love a well-written mystery, then this one is for you!

This is such an excellent read! It definitely lives up to its genre, with twists and turns, and lots of murderous details to keep you guessing. I found it very well written and exciting, from start to finish.

I loved the main character. He was very real and down to earth. He lives his life the exact way you might expect one to, when they’ve lost everyone who matters to them. He’s on the edge, living dangerously and doing anything to solves crimes, in hopes they lead to the answers, both for his murdered daughter and his missing wife. The trick is trying to keep it all together, as the pieces start to fall into place. I enjoyed reading along as he did all this and getting to know him as a person, as well as the way he works.

The Butcher was created brilliantly. We were always left with just that bit more we wanted or needed to know to be able to suss out who the mastermind might be. I liked that, as I love to be left trying to put the clues together and finding out there was a twist I hadn’t expected. The author did this brilliantly and really made the book interesting throughout.

Overall, this was a great thriller. I am looking forward to the second Jack Slaughter thriller!

Jack Slaughter is an ex cop living on the edge. His world came tumbling down after a catastrophic event that destroyed him and eventually his job as a homicide cop. Recommended by Ray his ex partner and bestfriend he takes on a missing person’s case, a woman who mysteriously disappears from her home leaving everything behind. A scenario that is all too familiar to Jack. Since the event that lost him everything important he has been tormented by what Jack calls ‘The Texter’ leading him to the crime scenes of missing unidentified women who have been brutally murdered. As he investigates his missing persons case and that of his own it becomes apparent there are possible connections that cannot be ignored.

From the very start this first book about Jack Slaughter is a page-turner. K. A . Lugo will have you rooting for Jack as he is forced to remember the past that changed everything. Shocking at times, gruesome as the body count rises K.A cleverly leads the reader down the path of Jack’s investigation, giving away nothing until ready to do so.

A thoroughly engaging, edge of your seat thriller that rates high up there with the likes of Lee Child, James Patterson, Tess Gerritson, Sandra Brown, Karen Rose, John Grisham etc you can see where I am going with this.

First class writing, I look forward to reading many more books by K. A Lugo in what I hope is a not to distant future.

In the flash of a moment, Jack Slaughter lost his wife, daughter and favorite pet. The latter were brutally murdered and to this day Jack has no idea what happened to his wife. The impact of these losses was more devastating than anyone could imagine. He left his work as a Detective and is now operating a Private Investigation practice. Now a man named Carl Boyd requests his assistance to find his wife Bonnie who has also disappeared. Jack’s internal response to this request is gut-wrenching. During the same week, a young woman is found murdered and found in a local lake area. Jack’s best buddy, Ray, stops Jack from making a stupid mistake, attaching Ray’s partner Travers at the scene of that crime. Jack can’t figure out the reason for Detective Travers’ animosity.
This opening scene leads to a discovery beyond horrendous – a series of deaths by evisceration – bodies that have inhumanly been sliced apart. K. A. Lugo ha gone ultra-dark on this central part of a multi-layered plot. Still the depiction of over a dozen bodies is so haunting that one keeps flipping the pages to find out what will happen, wondering if the perpetrator will somehow almost miraculously solve this unspeakable crime!
These stories have a soft side as the author adds that compassionate, human element that doesn’t just see each victim as a number but as a person with connections to place, time and other people.
Jack is sharp but what he misses is amply provided by his partner Ray. A parish priest is the listening, caring individual who is objective enough to speak truth to Jack in the presence of unspeakable grief. But beware! The four parts of this plot will not be resolved as the reader expects. It’s only when Ray’s wife disappears that the action ramps up and all the clues to discover the serial killer, Butch, begin to unite!
K. A. Lugo writes romance novels under another name but here demonstrates how competently and deftly she pens a crime thriller! This is a must read that this reviewer highly recommends!!!

Opening the first book in a new series written by an author writing their debut novel in the “thriller” genre could be a wonderful or not so wonderful experience AND I am happy to say that this was wickedly wonderful and so well-crafted that once I started reading I could not stop. Excellent writing, superb plotting, well fleshed out believable characters, more than one string to follow, mysteries solved but an elusive thread still hanging at the end of the story left me well satisfied but also eager to pick up the next book in the series as soon as it is available. I am invested in Jack and hope to find out more about him, what his future holds and just what happened to his wife on the night his life so spectacularly changed.

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Prior to the devastating murder of his tiny daughter, Zoe, and disappearance of his wife, Leah, Jack Slaughter was a police officer. Failing to protect the two people he loved most in the world, he took a sabbatical but was asked to return after a year. Jack didn’t return, and he’s three years into searching for Leah while supporting himself as a private investigator. He believes Leah is out there, suffering at the hands of a brute. Jack receives text messages about murdered women. He always fears the victim will be Leah.
After rushing to yet another the crime scene, an officer named Travers insults him, and his mistreatment is confusing to Jack. His best friend, another officer, Ray Navarro, keeps Jack in line.
A client, Carl Boyd hires Jack to find his wife, Bonnie. Jack digs deep and learns Bonnie and another man, Julian, are having an affair. Which man loves her? This is one of four mysterious disappearances of women, and P.I. In a personal way Jack Slaughter cares about each victim as he tries to solve these crimes and identify the twisted serial killer.
Author K.A. Lugo tells this perfect whodunit with gusto with a thrilling and engrossing pace from the first scene to the last. I enjoyed Jack’s heart-to-heart talks with the parish priest who married Leah and him and with his friend, Ray, who fills in some information. Scenes sink the reader into authentic San Francisco. Jack lives above a restaurant in China Town. When he speaks with people, he holds back his dark despair, but as a reader, I related. I highly recommend Slaughtered, an addictive mystery and as intricately detailed as it is tantalizingly page-turning. Book 2 is in the works, and I anticipate another winner by talented K.A. Lugo.

What a roller-coaster ride. This started with one of those characters I love. Jack Slaughter, an ex-cop, a new P.I., driven almost mad because of the loss of his wife and daughter. Handsome. I’m just somehow sure he is, you know, the rugged-looking kind. And then after about a third of a missing woman case he’s working on, he’s working on 13 murdered women, all cop cases which he is not even supposed to have anything to do with. I kept thinking “but wait, what happened to poor Bonnie Boyd that’s missing? Poor Mr. Boyd, he just got dropped.”

So, as you can see, I was beginning to get really upset about this book inside a book; about an author who had two storylines in her mind. I want to tell you, I was furiously writing a review about that in my mind while lying in bed trying to go to sleep. And then, wait until you hear this…I get up the next morning and start reading, trying to get the book over with and what happens? I can’t put the book down; can’t turn the pages fast enough the story has evolved and gotten really good.

So, what have we got? Great characters, lots of action, some confusing problems with the storyline and a book good enough that you can’t put it down. I’m going to let you draw your own conclusions from that.

I think this is K.A. Lugo’s first book, at least as K.A. Lugo since I’m unfamiliar with this author. She might have upset me for a little while with this book, but on the other hand, I most certainly think she should be working on Book 2. I like that Jack Slaughter guy and you know, good characters…well…people read books because of characters they like.

This isn’t the typical genre I read, so I have nothing to compare it to.  Regardless, the story captured my attention from the beginning.

Jack, a once-revered homicide detective, is working as a private investigator to help fund his search into the brutal murder of his daughter and disappearance of his wife.

The story starts with Jack once again turning up and a homicide site that he was sent a text telling he would find his wife.  This is the ritual that happens every three months since that tragic night.  It turns out there is a serial killer on the loose and Jack starts tying the pieces together.

The story unfolds in such a mystery that I never knew who the killer was. I suspected at times, but I was wrong.  It kept me guessing up until the end.  The pace was methodical, and every detail of the story was mapped out. I only wish there was a bit more intensity. I understand the author was trying to keep this as authentic as possible, but when your wife is missing, you’re not going to put a case board together then have lunch. Not any man I know at least.

I am rating Slaughtered 4.5 Boundless Stars, and it was a great crime thriller.

"Slaughtered" is a story of a man lost in regret and haunted by unanswered questions.

In one fell swoop, Jack lost his daughter, beloved pet, and his wife. Unimaginable—especially for a homicide detective. If he’d only gotten home sooner, he could’ve prevented his daughter’s death and his wife’s disappearance. Or so he tells himself.

Unable to cope, he leaves the force and becomes a private investigator, while privately investigating the murder of his child and disappearance of his wife. Nothing else really matters to him. He is a ghost of the man he once was.

While being misled around the city by a phantom texter with innocuous clues about his wife, Jack inadvertently stumbles into a serial killer case that appears to have ties to his wife’s case. And subsequently, perhaps even the missing person case he has just been hired to investigate.

But nothing is at it seems.

Slaughtered will twist and turn you to the final page.

I enjoyed this story. There are some gruesome bits, lots of angst, and an interesting method of sleuthing. Jack was a character torn apart by his past. His way of coping was questionable, but he did have good friends to help, and deep down, he was a good person. With all the action and mystery, I kept turning the pages to find out who was responsible along with Jack. I recommend this story.

I received a copy of this story through Goddess Fish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.

SLAUGHTERED JACK SLAUGHTER THRILLER #1 K.A. LUGO
Slaughtered is one of those books that will hook you on page 1 and reel you in for the duration. I was hooked at Is that Leah? I felt his pain and despair at having lost people he loved but was determined to find his wife no matter what. After looking into the case of a missing wife, Jack discovers that his case and the case of a serial killer on the loose are related. There are twists and turns in this story that make the long and winding road look like a straight-away. I thoroughly enjoyed Slaughtered and give it 5 stars. Hurry up Ms. Lugo and write the next one! I can’t wait!

This book is, simply put, a page-turner. From the very first page, Slaughtered, book 1 in the Jack Slaughter thriller series by K.A. Lugo will have you hooked. Author, K. A. Lugo wastes no time in taking you right into the action and the world of Jack Slaughter.

His daughter, Zoe was murdered, the family dog, Trax was killed and his wife, Leah is missing. This is a heavy blow for police officer, Jack Slaughter. The killer is now tormenting the already distraught man by sending him cryptic messages that lead to more dead bodies. Jack has no choice but to turn up at the locations each time. Will the next body be his beloved Leah?

Now a private detective, Jack Slaughter helps others find missing loved ones. His latest case has overtones similar to his own tragedy. It is in trying to find his client’s missing wife, Bonnie that things start to fall into place. Missteps, misdirection and a lot of intrigue will keep you glued to the narrative.

A tad slow in some places, the story will keep you invested to read to the end. Jack is a likable character and his former partner and friend, Ray is a solid character. I was able to picture some of the characters in my mind as I read as the writer, while not being overly descriptive paints great imagery with words.

Will Jack find his missing wife? Will he finally solve the murder of his baby girl and the killing of the family’s dog? Well. You will just have to read this one to find out.

Full disclosure. . . I am a romance reader. I don't like suspense or murder or blood and guts. But this book is excellent. This author has written many spectacular villains, and did not disappoint this time.
It is because of the history of thoroughly villainous antagonists that I agreed to try and read this book. In a somewhat twisted turn of events, I didn't expect to like the protagonist. But I did. . .human failings and all.
While I have never been to San Francisco, the locations covered in the book aren't the traditional scenes you would expect. This leads the reader to feel that the story isn't "set" in San Francisco; Rather, the story is happening where the characters live - that happens to be San Francisco.
My one complaint is that it ends on a cliffhanger. And I don't have access to the next book in the series yet. It in no way detracts from the story told, but leaves me metaphorically shaking my fist at the author. Probably because, being a romance reader, I like my happily ever after.
I did not find it an easy read, but it was absolutely worth it. I highly recommend it to anyone, even the (like me) squeamish!

Slaughtered is one of those books you blow through. You read it so fast you have to go back and double check that you didn't skip anything. The reason? Because the story is so intense that you can't put it down.
The plot is engaging and entertaining. There is plenty of wit to break up the suspense without making the book a comedy. The author beautifully wrapped up the main plot but left me dangling off a cliff with the last sentence. I can't wait for book 2.

Fantastic! I didn’t want to put it down from the beginning to the end. Jack and Ray were great and when I like the characters I want to keep reading more books about them. I loved the ending so I’m ready for the next one. I hope it’s in the works. I’m not very patient.

Great book from this new (to me) author. I love a good mystery book and this one was perfect. It’s full of emotion, suspense, mystery and action. I found that I was drawn into the story from the get-go with the characters being so well written that you can’t help but place yourself in their situation and think what you would do and then compare. It’s very realistic and down to earth. If you enjoy a good exciting book that takes you on a wonderful journey, then grab this book.

Just Incredible!

Slaughtered is a well paced thriller by KA Lugo. It starts with a murder, one in a series of murders, that somehow tie to the life of Jack Slaughter. A former police detective, Slaughter's life fell apart with the death of his daughter and the disappearance of his wife. These bodies are apparently being staged to taunt him. Readers are taken on a thrilling ride as Jack gets closer to discovering who the killer is, and the motivation behind the kills.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a really juicy murder mystery. It's an excellent read, which will curly your toes and tingle your spine. I couldn't put it down!

K.A. Lugo writes a thrilling tale with Slaughtered

In Slaughtered the reader is introduced to Jack Slaughter, a former police officer turned PI so he could make a living, and search for his family. His little girl and his wife. They were taken and never found, but presumed dead. Jack is hanging by a thread, and then the texts starting coming in. Telling him where his wife's body is, and when he arrives there, it's not his wife. It's happening like clockwork, and then he takes on an eerily familiar missing person's case from Carl Boyd, whose wife Bonnie is missing, and the circumstances, are just like Leah's. I haven't read anything by this author before, and what a hidden gem. I enjoyed it so much, that I have now followed the author and look for more books to read. Slaughtered is part of the Jack Slaughter Thrillers series, and this is volume one, and I will definitely read the next ones that follow. Jack is living on the edge, determined to find the answers he so desperately seeks. KA Lugo is an amazing writer, and tells a grandly suspenseful story. Just when the reader thinks they know what is going to happen, something unexpected crosses Jack's path. A very unpredictable story, my favorite kind! Slaughtered is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.

Jack Slaughter’s life was turned upside down and his heart ripped right out of his chest the day he came home and walked into his house only to find the body of his little girl a toddler and the family dog murdered with his wife missing.

Jack was a homicide detective but that day changed his life forever taking with it his family and his job. Now Jack works for himself as a private investigator.

When Bonnie Boyd turns up missing her husband hires Jack to find her. Jack doesn’t like working on missing person’s cases as they hit too close to home but his best friend and ex-partner ask him to take the case so he can’t say no.

Bodies of women have been turning up all over the city for the last three years. Jack receives a text every time one of the women are murdered telling him where the body is and each time Jack races out the door wondering if it will be his wife. Each time Jack wonders if this time it will be his wife and he can find the closures he needs to move on with his life.

Slaughtered is filled with mystery and suspense from the first word until the last. Jack will have you racing all over town with him trying to find this serial killer and looking for the missing woman Bonnie and his wife as well. Jack will be looking for his missing wife around every corner until the day he finds her. He will never stop looking for her as he believes she is out there somewhere.

Slaughtered is one of those books that will have you guessing from the moment you pick it up and it will have you trying to figure out who the killer is but loving to hang on to its secrets and not letting go until the very end and even then it still has a few secrets up its sleeve leaving you wanting more.

I can’t wait for the next book in the Jack Slaughter Thrillers to see what Jack has in store for us and hopefully we will find out more about his wife in future books as I have this feeling that the Jack Slaughter Thrillers are not going to give up any of its secrets easily.

I would recommend Slaughtered to anyone who loves a good mystery with lots of suspense.

K.A. Lugo hits a homerun with the first book in her debut series about a police detective who has turned his back on his badge and the justice system when his young daughter and family dog are found murdered and his wife has vanished without a trace. For the next three years, Jack receives texts from someone toying with him, telling him where his wife’s body is, only for Jack to discover that its someone else’s body, murdered in the most heinous way.

Jack takes on missing persons cases as a private investigator but still holds onto the hope that one day Leah will be found and he can finally get the answers he so desperately seeks and the peace that having closure will bring.

This story grabs the reader from the start and its one fast and intense ride, so hold on tight! Jack is a character you can’t help but empathize with and root for. His grief comes across sharp and painful. His reminisces about Leah make his pain all the more vivid.

This story held a lot of surprises for me and the unmasking of the killer leaves more questions than answers that I predict will be made clear in future installments. I really enjoyed the side plot of the missing person case Jack is working on, which was really interesting, as well. Jack’s quest for justice is far from over, but with the support of his former partner and best friend, he is on the right path.

My Final Verdict: There are some gruesome and graphic descriptions of murder scenes that the weak kneed reader may struggle with, but it’s relevant to the story. I highly recommend this to all readers and fans of thrillers, suspense and police procedural plots will enjoy the hard-edged and sordid backdrop of this story. The characters are realistic and believable. The plot and dialogue flow smoothly and fit the characters and their personalities.
