"It was okay." - 2 out of 5 star rating.

So... yeah, this is another 'adaptation' series, aka a 1:1 copy of the original content (film/show) just translated into comic book form. I feel like that should be part of the title to be fair and set expectations to readers. "Star Wars: The Mandalorian Comic Book Adaptation (2022-2023)"... there, fixed.

The biggest issue with these adaptions is pacing. Unless you are going to do a 30+ issue comic book series, these are naturally forced to go at a drastically faster rate than their big screen counterparts. This is no different, feeling like its flying by at 3x speed.

As a huge Mandalorian fan who has watched the show 3 times now at the time of this review, so much key dialog and crucial content is missing from this issue... hard for me to give this above a 3. I get it though - this is how comic adaptations go.

This issue in particular however is not even 3 worthy. My biggest complaint on top of all of the missed continue due to the rushed pace, is now we have a drastic dip in artwork quality. There is zero excuses in my book for having such terrible art in a 2022-2023 comic book. Even some of the 1970-80's comics I've read has had more love, care, and attention than what we get here.

So now you have a rushed story combined with lazy artwork. If you'd never seen the TV show and this was your landing point for the Mandalorian, you would be greatly confused why this has such a big following.

This honestly probably deserves a 1, but I guess it gets a free pass to 2 just for being Mando/Star Wars. Unfair I know.

Onward.

Looking for a place to settle, Mando and the kid befriend a soldier on a backwater planet where they help protect a village from bandits and later learn the kid is being tracked by bounty hunters. Great comic from beginning to end and reminds you of how good the show is.

I like the dialogue but the battle scenes are over-complicated and hard to follow.

I've said in my previous Mando reviews how one of the biggest problems with the series has been how its retelling the stories of the episodes with none of the magic that makes the show really stand out. This issue might be one of the worst examples of that as reading this issue felt so completely bland and joyless that I actually started to question why I'm even reading the series.

As those who've seen the show will know, this issue sees Din and Grogu head to a remote planet to lay low, but whilst there they end up making friends with a former Rebel shock trooper, Cara Dune, and get roped into helping to protect a small village from a group of bandits that are threatening their way of life. Star Wars does Seven Samurai yet again.

One of the things that I remember liking about this episode was the relationships that formed. The village felt like a nice place, the people felt lovely, and I could believe that Din was tempted to give up his old life and settle down there. This issue told me all that, but never convinced me of it. And this was something that I found when reading the scenes where the characters were preparing to fight the bandits, or when Cara and Din were fighting. Everything felt flat and without any real emotion or gravity.

Perhaps part of the problem is that I've seen the series, so am always going to compare it to that. Maybe if all I knew of The Mandalorian was this comic series I'd find it really entertaining. But I honestly struggle to. Things move too fast, with scenes from the show that were given minutes to unfold taking place over just a page because there's a lot to cram in. I never feel like I'm connecting with the characters or story; and that's one of the worst things for any type of story; because if I can't find anything to connect to, what't it even for?

Bone broth, for the little one.❞ 🍵

Grogu drinking soup is definitely one of the cutest scenes in the whole TV series and comic.

This is basically ❝The Mandalorian❞ TV series made into a comic, and a summary of each episode from ❝The Mandalorian❞ is made into a comic issue, and there are no new stories in it.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian (2022-2023) #4 = ❝The MandalorianS1.E4 ∙ Chapter 4: Sanctuary❞.

Don’t read it if you haven’t watched the TV series first, if you don’t want to see all of the spoilers.

Grogu is the cutest character and one of the best if not the best character in the TV series, and the TV series is definitely worth watching only for his cuteness. The comic version of Grogu could definitely be cuter and it sadly doesn’t live up to the cuteness of Grogu in the TV series.
