Sharks of the World

Rate this book
Everyone's heard of the Great Whites. But most people know little of the hundreds of other types of sharks that inhabit the world's oceans. Written by two of the world's leading authorities and superbly illustrated by wildlife artist Marc Dando, this is the first comprehensive field guide to all 440-plus shark species. Color plates illustrate all species, and detailed accounts include diagnostic line drawings and a distribution map for each species. Introductory chapters treat physiology, behavior, reproduction, ecology, diet, and sharks' interrelationships with humans.

Extremely informative field guide on many species of sharks around the world. I absolutely adore sharks as they are my favorite animal and I love how detailed this guide goes into explaining the history, taxonomy, morphology and evolution of these incredible animals. Bonus point for the amazing illustrations, which tend to be accurate depictions of these animals from my experience of looking up reference pictures for any shark species. The different subclasses and orders of all the shark species are talked about and it clearly shows the difference between all of them with individual sections talking about the species with even a map showcasing the location of said species.

10/10 read, 10/10 illustrations, 10/10 educational material that everyone should read, especially if you love biology, marine biology and of course sharks.

Compagno's Sharks of the World is the first field guide to all the shark species of the world. One of the things I look for when buying field guides is if they are comprehensive. I do not have a great interests in sharks but when I saw this field guide in Borders I new I had to have it. The illustrations are awesome. Range maps for every species plus id points made this book irresistable. Now if I ever decide to go on a trip to the Great Barrier Reef or if I ever decide to go surf fishing and catch a Dog Fish I will be able to identify it (which will be the beginning of my life shark list). A must have for anyone interested in sharks or field guides.

This Princeton Field Guide is profusely illustrated and comprehensive reference to sharks of all kinds, from the tiniest cookie cutter sharks and dogfish to whale and basking sharks. Anatomical illustrations and discussion, tooth images, maps, good color illustrations (not photographs), and concise scientific info on each species. An excellent resource for shark fans of all ages but may be a bit dry for very young readers. If you're a diver or researcher this is the only reference you'll need to own.

NOTE: I do not own the most recent edition of this book.

This is for the kid who really wants to invest in their shark obsession. Field guides were some of my favorite books when I was a kid and I still find them interesting to this day. When I was a child I would simply flip through the pages until I found a picture of something (in this case a shark) that I thought I looked cool. There would be a brief description of the animal followed by some facts and figures such as size and weight. There was also usually a map showing the creature's range. These books provided a very visual learning experience. The text was brief and the picture were large.

This particular book is what I once thought of as a "grown up field guide" because the first half of the book is made up of all the pictures. Once you find the species you would like to read about you refer to the page number next to the image which will lead you to the text about the species in the back half of the book. I found this whole process quite fun!

The pictures in this book are superb and the information in this book is very well researched. When I got this book, it was supposedly the only book in the world to contain information on all known sharks. Several species have been discovered since I got this book. Maybe these new additions can be found in the newer edition of this book. Regardless, it's fun to have information about so many species of sharks all in one place.

A great book!
