Although Taiyo Matsumoto desired a career as a professional soccerplayer at first, he eventually chose an artistic profession. He gained his first success through the Comic Open contest, held by the magazine Comic Morning, which allowed him to make his professional debut. He started out with 'Straight', a comic about basketball players. Sports remain his main influence in his next comic, 'Zéro', a story about a boxer.

In 1993 Matsumoto started the 'Tekkonkinkurito' trilogy in Big Spirits magazine, which was even adapted to a theatre play. He continued his comics exploits with several short stories for the Comic Aré magazine, which are collected in the book 'Nihon no Kyodai'. Again for Big Spirits, Taiyo Matsumoto started the series 'Ping Pong' in 1996. 'Number Five' followed in 2001, published by Shogakukan.

This is one of the best graphic novels I've ever read. Matsumoto tells stories in his graphic novels at a pace and depth that most in this space can't quite get right. Hoshino and Tsukimoto are some of my favorite fictional characters and Matsumoto's entire cast is multi-dimensional. I love this book and hope a printed English-language edition becomes available someday.

Hhh soo gooood - v v nice to revisit something I was very into as a 14 year old in its original form and have it very much hold up -

The anime to a larger degree but even this manga to an extent have this reputation amongst manga and anime community that it's "not like other sports anime" or even "it's not about the ping pong" -- much like the way people talk about something like evangelion? When like this very much IS about ping pong

The only thing it's NOT about is I guess "who wins" -- but after watching all the haikyuu stuff that's out I'm like...maybe that's a biiit more about winning but even then not really

Stilll - it's really nice to sorta have that final chapter with all the different paths everyone takes - only peco is the "hero" -- the "typical" shounen sports protag who is like playing internationally - Smile is a schoolteacher, kazama is a strong played but can't make it past the national stage, sakuma has quit -- idk it's pre neat I think my favourite genre of things is adults looking back on their teenage days and stuff and that last chapter is v satisfying in that sense

Anyway all like sports protags are like nd to a degree but with Smile and Peco it's very like overt and dealt with even tho they don't explicitly call it autism -- Smile being called golgo or a cyborg, the way he relates to people and talks to them - the way people are like :/ sorry you didn't find it fun and hes like no it's interesting - I've not done smth like this - all with the straight face - and peco this other extreme adhd energy - constantly eating candy - hyperverbal just yaps about whatever nonsense - and yea they form a v v fun and wholesome and cute pair 🥲 -- I think this is the sorta best rendition of the black and white pairing archetype from tekkon kinkreet - feels like the peko type character is smth taiyou is v into

Anyway so many of my notes that I made was like !! These characters had a cool moment together - etc etc that's the fun of watching these guys play in tournaments and grow and change -- I think the main thing that probably separates ping pong from other sports stuff is its speed and pacing? But it really works as this short 5 volume but still like 2 year spanning story -

I especially enjoyed the coach stuff this time round - their relationships among each other and with the studentsss it was fun seeing how they kinda change and grow as people tooo

Kong wen used to be my fav character when I watched the anime probably because he's just cool? Even tho his entire arc is an anticlimax as someone who doesn't particularly grow much as a player (tho he's always v good) -- and who kinda loses quick - but it's nice that his arc is more about moving from being this like Chinese pro who's too proud and despises being in Japan into becoming like a mentor figure to all the Japanese players on his team and moving from trashtalking everyone in Chinese to like speaking broken Japanese to his teammates and helping them improve its nicee

And yeah just the trope of like autistic nonverbal nonemotional characters GROWING UP and becoming more "normal" idk is smth I like and appreciate? Cuz they're still nd but like can still...be happy and vibe w others lol

Consigliatissimo a tutti.

"I don't want to sacrifice things or drag people down to win"
