Necromancer #6

Consumed by Fire

Rate this book
Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

Darien's ready for a quiet life— back to studying, sleeping with his ridiculously appealing necromancer, playing magical Fetch with his dog-familar. But breaking the demon portals was only a temporary solution, when there are sorcerers out there rebuilding them. Much as he'd like to shove the rest of the job on someone else, Darien's not willing to see his world burn.

Silas is ready to turn the whole hunting-dark-sorcerers mess over to the Guild. Except he doesn't trust his council members as far as he can throw them, the sorcerer Chicago has sent sets his teeth on edge, and if they get it wrong, Darien's life is at risk. So with Grim at his side, and Pip encouraging Darien, they, Jasper, and Magda will take on one more hunt to find and stop the portal-builders.

I get asked about my name a lot. It's not something exotic, though. “Kaje” is pronounced just like “cage” – it’s an old nickname, and my pronouns are she/her/hers.

I was born in Montreal but have lived for 30 years in Minnesota, where the two seasons are Snow-removal and Road-repair, where the mosquito is the state bird, and where winter can be breathtakingly beautiful. Minnesota’s a kind, quiet (if sometimes chilly) place and it’s home.

I’ve been writing far longer than I care to admit (*whispers – fifty years*), mostly for my own entertainment, usually M/M romance (with added mystery, fantasy, historical, SciFi…) I also have a few Young Adult stories (some released under the pen name Kira Harp.)

My husband finally convinced me that after all the years of writing for fun, I really should submit something, somewhere. My first professionally published book, Life Lessons, came out from MLR Press in May 2011. I have a weakness for closeted cops with honest hearts, and teachers who speak their minds, and I had fun writing four novels and three freebie short stories in that series. I was delighted and encouraged by the reception Mac and Tony received.

I now have a good-sized backlist in ebooks and print, both free and professionally published. A complete list with links can be found on my website "Books" page at https://kajeharper.com/.

You can find me and my book reviews on my author page here on Goodreads - I hang out on Goodreads a lot because I moderate the Goodreads YA LGBT Books group. I also post free short YA stories on that group, more than 50 of them so far.

Though this seems like the conclusion of Silas and Darien’s journey (despite one more book focusing on Jasper and Hamish) it really was a fitting end as they stop a dangerous demon-using-fanatical-group of evil sorcerers who want complete world domination.

There’s lots of magic, lots of politics, and definitely, lots of high stakes with unthinkable repercussions should they fail.

As always, this has fantastic animal familiar dynamics and found family vibes that’s further solidified, providing a consistent fulfilling series set against a paranormal historical background!

Consumed by Fire showcases Kaje Harper’s unique supernatural storytelling and her penchant for creating memorable ensemble casts, with strong found family vibes, as she weaves exceptional historical and magical world-building into her stories, that feels second nature at this point.

Although there seems to be one more book in the series (Found by Jasper), featuring different MCs (but already beloved side-characters), this instalment felt like a farewell of sorts, featuring a strong and satisfying wrap-up to Silas and Darien’s sixties-set paranormal romance series.

Here, we go on one final adventure with necromancer Silas and his lover and apprentice sorcerer Darien, along with their familiars and their closest friends and confidantes, who take it upon themselves to stop a group of evil sorcerers from quite literally releasing hell on earth.

Once again, I enjoyed the high stakes situations and the evolving group dynamic, especially loving the various familiars and their always enjoyable personalities, as well as the introduction of older sorcerer and war-hero legend Hamish.

Silas and Darien remain a lovely and strong couple, now well and truly established within their relationship and in their immense powers, but it’s always in the larger group scenes where this series truly shines. I simply love the whole cast dynamic and how it continues to play out across the series, adding new faces and dear friends with every adventure they take.

Overall, this series has been an engaging, fun, hell of an original, M/M paranormal romance saga, and I’m so glad I gave it a go. If you have the ability within you to ignore the off-putting cover art for this series, please do. I promise you, what the kooky merchant in Aladdin once said is true: “Like so many things, it is not what is outside, but what is inside that counts.”

This is one of those series where every book feels just as good. Nothing gets left behind, nothing feels like filler, the bond between Silas and Darien is as strong as ever. I'm hoping we see more books, I have consistently liked each and every one if them

Loved it. I have enjoyed each and every addition but this fiery finale (maybe?) is my favorite. Not sure how they kept getting better...but they did! Silas and Darien are a formidable force. And their little family continues to grow. Such fun!

Consumed by Fire is the sixth book in the ‘Necromancer’ series. It once again stars Darien and Silas, along with their familiars, Grim and Pip. This is told in third person from Darien, Silas, and Grim’s povs.

I can’t tell you how much I love this series. This book picks up soon after the events dealing with the portals and the demons in Book Five. If the series was to end here, the author did an excellent job of tying up all the loose ends from the previous books, and giving the readers more information about Grim and why he’s so well respected by the other familiars. The blurb gives a basic rundown of the plot and I don’t want to add too much more because it would spoil the surprises. If you’re waiting to read all the books in this series, I’d suggest don’t wait. This book does a terrific job of giving readers a HEA and tying up the loose ends. Even if it seems like there are more adventures and possibilities ahead, the storyline feels complete, but with hope for more just because the series is so good.

There are a few new characters introduced in this book, one is Hamish, a highly respected sorcerer who helped defeat Hitler and his demons during WWII. I’m hoping the author decides to write a book in the future, possibly about Jasper and Hamish, because I want Jasper to end up with his HEA! And I’d love it if the Professor ended up as Jasper’s familiar, but the Professor already highly respects Jasper and thinks he’s, ‘the best of all the humans,’ so we know where his heart lies. Darien really comes into his power and confidence in this book. He was already confident, but I think he was still a bit unsure about what his abilities could do. In this story we see how powerful Darien can be, and it scares him and the others. We get to see that Darien is the perfect person to wield the power he has because he isn’t as corruptible as other magic users. Silas has changed from the walled off necromancer we first met in Book One, to a happier, funny, trusting man, all because Darien provided the safe place for Silas to be that kind of a person. Jasper and the Professor are growing closer, and Hamish has been added into everyone’s lives. Even Grim has grown slightly gentler because of Pip, and Pip is still a ray of sunshine. After I read this story, it occurred to me that Pip heals people from heartaches and pain, and Darien needed a lot of that after he was possessed by the ghosts. In the dark career like the necromancers and sorcerers have, life needs brightening, and Pip brings that light. The author did a terrific job at keeping the characters’ personalities consistent throughout the series as they grew in power and knowledge.

If this series ended here with this book, I think readers could be satisfied. Although, I would love to read a couple more books about the characters and this world. Especially about Hamish, Jasper, and the Professor. I’m crossing my fingers that this won’t be the last in this series. In the meantime, I highly recommend this series to everyone. I give, Consumed by Fire a solid 5 stars.

An incredibly satisfying ending to a thoroughly engaging series. Consumed by Fire was everything I wanted for the conclusion of this paranormal action adventure series. The plot was intriguing and captivating, keeping me glued to the pages in curiosity and suspense. The pacing was perfect, deftly and organically moving from plot point to plot point neither dragging nor hastily or too conveniently resolving issues. While the reader is kept on the edge of their seat, it’s comfortably and satisfyingly on the edge, not sick to your stomach with anxiety and without over the top, in your face evil and villainy.

So often action adventure pushes the villainy to extremes that feel frustrating, forced and contrived. Consumed by Fire does not fall into that trap, it finds a beautiful balance of suspense, intrigue and flow. The villains are evil and horrible but we’re not consumed by them, the story doesn’t fixate to the point of frustration on them. And when those villains themselves are consumed, the villainy resolved, it’s done with thoughtful introspection and moral reflection. Darien’s internal conflict over what must be done to conquer evil shows his humanity and kindness in a most satisfying way.

Throughout the fast paced saving-the-world plot, Silas and Darien, Grim and Pip, and their growing band of sorcerer friends and familiars are the heart of the story with their love, loyalty, dedication to and trust in each other. The way they all learn from, lean on and are able to depend on one another, growing within themselves and as a group was very fulfilling.

I don’t know for certain that this is the final book in the series but all the ends feel tied up tightly and neatly and though I would certainly be happy for more of these fantastic characters, their amusing, dedicated familiars and their brilliant friends, ending here feels good and right.

5 stars!

4.5⭐

Lovely conclusion to the series, or at least Darien and Silas. The whole series is good, steadily getting a little bit better. Suspenseful, romantic and funny, with an interesting magical world. The familiars are just too cute and I'm loving all the characters on Darien's side. Can't wait to read Jasper's book still.

I have read each of the books in this series, and while the storylines can be a bit monotonous, the characters are wonderful and very well-developed. While I didn't notice much growth in the personalities of the MCs, all six books combined encompass less than a year in their lives. So, I guess one's personal development wouldn't be expected to progress very far. Silas and Darien are a great couple. Their love for each other is felt by the reader. Grim and Pip are a great pair of familiars, as well - quirky, but immensely enjoyable and witty! They bring levity to the dark themes of the stories. Each of the storylines has been engaging and very suspenseful. The author creates quite a paranormal world that draws the reader in. I don't know if this is the final book in this series, but if it is, then the series ends on a satisfying note!

Five stars

I am sad to see this series end, because I’ve gotten very attached to this particular, cozy, weird take on magical worlds and the people who inhabit them.

Oh, the familiars. I LOVE the familiars. They are, quite literally, people too; because we know where their Home is.

This is a culmination story in several ways. Darien Green, who stumbled into necromancer Silas Thornwood’s life with nothing going for him, is now more than Silas’s boyfriend. He is his magical partner, his best-beloved, and his closest friend. Darien is still a long way from reaching his full potential, but he understands the importance and scope of his power, his connection to Silas’s necromancy, and his place in the magical world. More than that, he has given Silas a stronger sense of self, an understanding that being a sorcerer is more than a job. Together, these young men (regardless of their age difference) now realize that they are a force for good in a world that is all-too-often petty and selfish.

As far as crazy otherworldly magical stuff goes, this book is oddly less frenetic and less apocalyptic feeling (OK, there is that ONE thing with that over-educated demon, and of course the scene that inspired the title). But Silas and Darien, with their friends Jasper and Magda, and their peerless familiars – Grim, Pip, and (at least temporarily) Xsing (aka the Professor) – move about in pursue of evildoers and demons with a sureness and fearlessness that comes from their sense of community with each other. They have created a family (something explicitly noted by Silas) and it makes them strong.

Darien is still grappling with the dark side of being an enforcer of good. Magic is an unforgiving medium, and messing with demons is never a good choice. Darien is still tender-hearted, and we all hope he remains that way.

All of it is fascinating, with lovely touches of comic relief (Xsing the genius in his awkward racoon body, Pip with his under-educated wide-eyed enthusiasm). It builds to a great emotional and action-driven crescendo, and then settles in for a glimpse of a future we won’t get to share with this gang. For all the strange goings-on that Kaje Harper has thrown at us, she has steadfastly stuck to the characters and our emotional engagement with them. That’s what makes this such a strong and memorable series.

Things are getting busy in the story of necromancer Silos and sorcerer. In this episode, they get to deal with not only their local chapter but also another chapter from Chicago. They also end up going to Canada to battle some sorcerers who have run amuck and summoned a large number of demons. The reason why has to do with their political desire to have more power in the mortal world.

There is a whole nest in a small Canada town, and Silas and Darien have to use all their powers, and abilities to fight this berzerk group and get rid of the Demons, and then have to fight off the leaders of the Chicago council who try to take all the glory and treat them as underlings to be made to do what that council wants done.

Jasper, Darien and Silas show their ability to work together and in the process learn more about their gifts and the strength of their familiars, Grim and Pip at the same time. All four of them are more powerful beings than any of them are aware of before this episode. And Grim, in particular, is also a creature with influence amongst his own kind that make him a great part of the team as they try to make their way though the human and sorcerer world that they inhabit.

Once again, like the others, I recommend this to those who enjoy reading about paranormals that also are part of the m-m relation paradigm. Good reading indeed.

Dark intentions

Our men don’t get a break.

Now they are back topsoil—- they have to travel to make sure the demon gates are closed on earth. Also, track down the conspirators.

They end tracking down where the leader is—- with the help of others they all have ti work together.

There’s rescues and death and much more.

They all need a vacation after this.

Darien also catches the eye of some higher ups.

I enjoy that the familiars are their own personalities and together they all work as a team.

Silas & Darien

The end of the portals and the people who were behind them. The team sets up to find the remaining portals they didn’t destroy from the Veil. Power moves people in different ways, some stay in the light and some are attracted to the darkness. Darien and Silas and their found family work together to save the Allies Hammer, Hamish and close the last portal. Darien’s gift binds them all together in more ways than just magic. Really enjoyed this series.

I love this world, although it's pretty brutal at times. Such interesting things happen here as our heroes work to discover the people behind the five gates from the previous story. Some new characters, some new group magic workings, and, best of all, potential for more stories to follow!

Paranormal adventure with animal "familiars" and MM romance. This time the "gang" picks up a couple of allies, but they're necessarily trustworthy. Some self-important wizards try to take over but Grim, Pip, and Darien put them in their place.
Typo: "hoards of loose demons" should be hordes.

I really like this series. I am guessing that this is the last book with Silas and Darien as the MC's. I am about to start Jasper and Hamish's story and then will read the story that takes place in the same bookverse but 60 years later. Can't wait.

Ahhhhhh, these two made me HAPPY! 🥰

I don't often like series that follow the same couple.over multiple books, but every once in a while there's an exception, and Silas and Darien are absolutely one of those.

5☆ for the full series (...and I'm beyond thrilled that Jasper gets a book, too! 😍)

I absolutely adore this series! It’s funny, full of action and danger, and has a well established caring couple. I loved the reassurance and support Silas and Darien gave each other! The familiars were an added bonus that made everything that much better. I wish this wasn't the end...
