Consumed by Fire is the sixth book in the ‘Necromancer’ series. It once again stars Darien and Silas, along with their familiars, Grim and Pip. This is told in third person from Darien, Silas, and Grim’s povs.
I can’t tell you how much I love this series. This book picks up soon after the events dealing with the portals and the demons in Book Five. If the series was to end here, the author did an excellent job of tying up all the loose ends from the previous books, and giving the readers more information about Grim and why he’s so well respected by the other familiars. The blurb gives a basic rundown of the plot and I don’t want to add too much more because it would spoil the surprises. If you’re waiting to read all the books in this series, I’d suggest don’t wait. This book does a terrific job of giving readers a HEA and tying up the loose ends. Even if it seems like there are more adventures and possibilities ahead, the storyline feels complete, but with hope for more just because the series is so good.
There are a few new characters introduced in this book, one is Hamish, a highly respected sorcerer who helped defeat Hitler and his demons during WWII. I’m hoping the author decides to write a book in the future, possibly about Jasper and Hamish, because I want Jasper to end up with his HEA! And I’d love it if the Professor ended up as Jasper’s familiar, but the Professor already highly respects Jasper and thinks he’s, ‘the best of all the humans,’ so we know where his heart lies. Darien really comes into his power and confidence in this book. He was already confident, but I think he was still a bit unsure about what his abilities could do. In this story we see how powerful Darien can be, and it scares him and the others. We get to see that Darien is the perfect person to wield the power he has because he isn’t as corruptible as other magic users. Silas has changed from the walled off necromancer we first met in Book One, to a happier, funny, trusting man, all because Darien provided the safe place for Silas to be that kind of a person. Jasper and the Professor are growing closer, and Hamish has been added into everyone’s lives. Even Grim has grown slightly gentler because of Pip, and Pip is still a ray of sunshine. After I read this story, it occurred to me that Pip heals people from heartaches and pain, and Darien needed a lot of that after he was possessed by the ghosts. In the dark career like the necromancers and sorcerers have, life needs brightening, and Pip brings that light. The author did a terrific job at keeping the characters’ personalities consistent throughout the series as they grew in power and knowledge.
If this series ended here with this book, I think readers could be satisfied. Although, I would love to read a couple more books about the characters and this world. Especially about Hamish, Jasper, and the Professor. I’m crossing my fingers that this won’t be the last in this series. In the meantime, I highly recommend this series to everyone. I give, Consumed by Fire a solid 5 stars.
