Rate this book
Tabby Winslow will help her twin sister Sage with anything and everything—and that includes putting out the flames of suspicion when Sage’s boss is found murdered in this magical mystery, perfect for fans of Amanda Flower and Sofie Kelly.

December in Savannah, Georgia, is a sight to behold. With all the festivities—including the traditional riverfront luminary display during the boat parade—twin sisters Tabby and Sage Winslow are busier than ever setting up for the big celebration. But that isn’t the only thing on the sisters’ minds. Both Sage and her fellow employee Mary Nicole are vying for the sought-after assistant manager job at the plant nursery. But when Loren Lee, their boss, is found dead, and Sage becomes the police’s favorite suspect, both Winslow girls know that they’ll need more than a flicker of magic and their sisterhood to solve the murder and clear Sage’s name.

Soon, Tabby realizes that this is just one of the many problems they have. If being a suspect for murder wasn’t enough, there are more magical problems that they have to Sage’s boyfriend is having a paranormal experience of his own he can’t control, there’s an energy vampire searching for his supposedly lost cousin, and oh—every time Tabby hiccups, she turns completely invisible. The suspect list grows with each day and it seems everyone has a reason or a connection to Loren Lee.

Tabby and Sage are burning the candle at both ends—but will it be enough to keep their friends safe and find this killer? Or will they be burned by their efforts?

The second book in the Magic Candle Shop series is every bit as good as the first.

Tabby and Sage are sisters who run a candle shop in Savannah. They both have magical talents and share a special bond which means they can communicate telepathically. When Sage is a suspect in a murder Tabby of course has to try and find the real killer.

I like the magic system in this series. There is an energy vampire who steals people's strength. There are people casting spells all over the place and Tabby finds herself getting hiccups and disappearing from view. Fortunately she finds another practitioner who helps sort her out and she also has a good, steady relationship behind her. I am still not fond of Sage though who comes across as rather self centred.

A fun book to read if you enjoy witches and magic.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

In the Wick of Time by Valona James is a cumbersome read filled with unlikeable characters and lacking in forward momentum.
When I got to the 50% mark, I was starting to think of tossing it in the DNF pile. I eventually got to 67% read before I tossed in the towel.
While James' writing is technically proficient, the story is slow, repetitive and boring. The character of Sage is selfish, careless, stupid and self-destructive, while her sister Tabby is her enabler, letting Sage walk all over her to her own detriment. The detective in the series has to be the most hateful, non-villain I've ever seen in a book, to the point of being completely unbelievable.
Maybe the title makes sense past the 67% mark, but so far the clever pun in the title has absolutely nothing to do with the content of the book.
This book is a chore to read, and the only nice thing about it is the cover.
I received an ARC of #IntheWickofTime from #NetGalley.

In the Wick of Time by Valona Jones is the second book in the series, and after reading both of them, I don’t think this is a series I will be continuing. I loved the premise of a candle shop and supernatural powers. This is the type of book that I am often drawn to, so I am saddened that it just isn’t holding my attention.

While the characters are well developed, I couldn’t get past the dialogue in this book. It felt off… almost robotic at times, not with a natural flow. Sage is really an unlikable character for me. Now not all characters in a cozy needs to be sweet, but when you have a main character who is continually flying off the handle and acting like a jerk (especially to their twin), it’s not something I want to read about.

Then there’s the whole, we should keep our powers a secret, yet they are continually letting people know about it. Consistency would be good, or using it every so often to drop a bomb on another character could make it more interesting.

The side story with their aunt, aunt’s boyfriend, and boyfriend’s family is very interesting, and I can see it really adding to the series in future books. And the energy vampire aspect is another great layer.

Perhaps when book three comes out, and I see a bunch of stellar reviews, I would continue this series, but with so many great books out there that really draw me in, I don’t have time for mediocre ones.

Tried this series again because it has an interesting premise but this was even worse than the first. The main characters are even more annoying and unpleasant- just can’t care about them at all. This series is off my to read list.

I hadn’t read the first book in this series, but I was intrigued enough by the blurb to try this anyway. Thankfully, this author does a great job of making sure new readers aren’t lost. I found the twin sisters interesting, but I must admit that sometimes Sage got on my nerves with her drama and selfishness. Of course, she would turn around and do something to counteract that, so then I’d really like her again. I think this was a good mystery, but also, we were a little bogged down with either too much detail or not enough, really sidetracked with extraneous details. However, all that aside, I still quite enjoyed this interesting cozy mystery and the side of magic thrown in. I’ll definitely read the next one. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Review found here: https://seriestracker.wordpress.com/2...

First, I want to say that I totally understand that I have no idea what it is like to write a whole book. It must be monumentally difficult. And it is infinitely easier to criticize rather than attempt to write a book one’s self. But try as I might, I just didn’t find this latest Netgalley offering to my taste.

In the Wick of Time by Valona Jones is listed on Random House’s website as “Part of Magic Candle Shop Mystery”. It had all the great things I like about mysteries: cool cover that implies there is magical mayhem involved, a play on words title, and even a categorization as both a magical mystery but a cozy. I admit, however, when requesting it from Netglley I didn’t realize it was book 2. But ok, I have done that before – and oftentimes then went back and read the earlier books – so it didn’t seem like that big a deal once I realized that. And I love a good easy read which most “cozy mysteries” are. So I eagerly dug in.

It wasn’t long before I realized three things: (1) book one likely would have been helpful; (2) there was both too much and not enough going on at the same time here; and (3) I really didn’t like most of the characters and the plot really needed some help. In cozy mysteries, there is typically a good bit of investigating. Not so much here. Most of the time there was talk about investigating, but besides one small B&E into the dead guy’s house and a trip for Tabby to visit her boyfriend in the morgue where she overheard a conversation, there was way more complaining about being swamped with work and investigating than there was investigating.

There also was no real establishment of the rules of this universe. And there is a fair bit that seems inconsistent. Does Tabby’s boyfriend know she is magic? Not sure. There are conversations where it seems like he must be but there are also conversations (and one at the end in particular) where is seems like he isn’t. Tabby and Sage talk about magic openly with the cops and others so easily but they don’t have boyfriends that know the details? And as for the magic that they have… heck if I know what it actually is or what the rules are.

There wasn’t really even an attempt at an establishment of the rules of this universe. Hoping that folks who have read book one have that background because it isn’t here. I know that it sometimes is hard to provide the right amount of background information so as to not bore readers who have read the prior installment(s) of a series, but in cozy-land, since they are typically stand alone mysteries just sharing repeating setting and characters, it is important to make sure to fill in the new readers if they pick up in the middle. And here that wasn’t really done. In fact, I had to read the first few pages more than one to make sure I knew who was who and to figure out as much as I could. For example, late in the book one of the twins notes that they can’t be aware from their street for too long. Why? I have no idea. It wasn’t explained.

The mystery itself was really silly too. It didn’t even feel like a real attempt to get a decent motive. No spoilers here in a review pre-publication make it hard to explain more about that but let’s just say that my fist thought when the baddie was revealed was “Whaaaaat? Really, that leads to this guys murder?”

And then we have Sage and Tabby. Honestly, not two of the most likable characters. Sage is whiny and selfish and just mean a lot of the time. And no matter how often you tell me that Sage is good with plants, it won’t make me like her. Tabby? I got more detail about soap and candle making than of any real plot or investigation on her part. Even the dialogue between them was old. One interaction started with Sage being angry and red faced and snapping at Tabby and then next moment Tabby behaving like the victim of domestic abuse and excusing it and being fine with it.

Tabby might have created some great new scent for candles and soap in the book, but this is one wick that wasn’t for me.

p.s. To Whomever Came Up With the Title: there should be some connection between the story and the pun… there was nothing resembling “In the Nick of Time” here really – by the time we get to the big reveal it doesn’t count because cozy mysteries always have a close call for the investigator. Better title next time. Although the cover was cute.

#IntheWickofTime #NetGalley is the first book I read by this author.
Tabby and Sage are twin sisters who have some unusual talents. Tabby works in the family candle shop, creating unique blends for the shop, including specialty soaps. Sage assists in the shop, and works at a local nursery, her true love being plants.
Sage's boss in the nursery appears ill, and refuses her help to get him to the doctor.
When his sudden death raises questions, Tabby and Sage need to work fast to prove her innocence.
I enjoyed this book, and the characters are colorful and smart.
I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store for these sisters.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

In the Wick of Time is a decent cozy mystery. I was hoping for more of a Christmas feel and was a tad disappointed with the lack thereof. At times, this was hard to get through as it felt repetitive and slow.

I also had a hard time with the twins. Their interactions with each other, and their surroundings, didn't vibe or mesh well for me. I did enjoy the supernatural/magical part of the story, but even that at times was sluggish.

Overall, not a bad one, but not great either. I probably won't continue the series or go back and read book 1. Don't let that discourage you though if this sounds like a book you would enjoy.

I sincerely appreciate the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

I mostly enjoyed this book, but parts of it are a slog to get through. That’s a lot of negativity and trouble going on which really drag the enjoyment down. The killers are caught but the sense that they will face justice isn’t there. #IntheWickodTime #NetGalley

Dark magic is infusing the holiday shopping season which leads our favorite twins to once again find themselves needing to sleuth to find out who the killer is! Crazy antics keep the sisters hopping as they try to untangle the mystery and clear their loved ones from being infected by bad elements! This paranormal cozy is really growing well! The first book was a wonderful introduction to our sister sleuths, but this book really brings the personalities of all the characters further to the forefront. Some personalities are coming out a bit stronger than you might like, but I sense that more information about what special paranormal characteristics that these characters possess may explain those personality traits even more. Once again a fun and detailed plot will keep you entertained and guessing as you read! I really can't wait for the next book in this series to come out as I am so loving these characters and am anxious to see what happens in their personal lives next!

Tabby’s twin sister, Sage, is working part time at a plant nursery when her boss ends up dead. It appears no one liked the guy, meaning everyone who knew him is a suspect. The police target Sage, which makes finding the real killer a priority. Meanwhile, the gifted twins have to fend off an energy vampire who threatens to dim their lights in more ways than one. It’s up to Tabby to muster her full power as an energetic to resist this threat and save her sister before they both get burned. Magic and mayhem mingle with murder in this lighthearted mystery set in Savannah during holiday season. Soaps, scents, and candles add to the flavor and will make you want to go shopping. “In the Wick of Time” is a magical murder mystery that will keep you guessing. A fun read! Disclosure: I received a copy of this book on NetGalley. This opinion is my honest review.

This is book 2 in this cute and quirky series. I could not put this down!! In this book, the sister fights and come back together to solve this crime when one of their own is suspected. There are so many signs pointing to someone else but the police don't see it and Sage and her sister solve this for them.

I could not put this book down. I have never read this author before but wow, was I impressed. The storyline was original and refreshing. I love almost anything paranormal, especially paranormal cozies. This one has just been amped up to my top five favorite of the genre. Tabby and Sage are incredible with their powers and their love for each other. I love the way that they just keep getting up and going on no matter how many times they have been kicked down.

Even though this is my first time reading the book series, I wasn't lost. Once I figured out everyone out, it was very easy to follow along. I cannot wait to go back and read the first book. Heck, I can hardly wait to read the next book and I know it hasn't even been written yet lol.

The world building was incredible, and I couldn't wait to keep finding out all of the family history of the girls and their friends. This book really gave my mind a whole lot to chew on and I enjoyed that immensely. The ending was a surprise because even though I am good at piecing together mysteries, I had absolutely no idea how this one was going to end.

I, myself, love to make soap and candles so it was really neat to find a book in which that was part of theme. I love that crafting is starting to come back in popularity as I am not sure where we would be as people without it. It's almost a lost art. Anyway, I had so much fun reading this book. I cannot wait for more.

I absolutely recommend this book. What a joy to read!!

Thanks to Netgalley, the publishers, and to Valona Jones for the ability to read and review this book. All opinions are mine and completely honest.

Tabby and Sage Winslow, owners of the Book and Candle Shop in Savannah, are preparing for the holidays, but Sage's part-time work at the local nursery has suddenly become more stressful. Her boss Loren Lee has died after what seemed like a lingering illness, and Sage comes under suspicion after the autopsy reveals poison. On top of that, Sage has lost the assistant manager opening to the snide Mary Nicole, who has started bossing Sage around. And if that weren't enough, Sage catches her boyfriend Brindle cozied up to his office assistant at home late one night. Something strange is going on, and since Sage is too overwrought to see things clearly, Tabby steps in to investigate once more.

This second book in the Magic Candle Shop series is a more captivating read than the first. A few seemingly unrelated incidents soon prove to have a common thread, and the pacing picks up as Tabby puts the pieces together. I appreciated the deeper character development here: Sage is still problematic in her use of her magic, but I think the ending left some hope for her redemption. Other character details, like Quig's affinity for Tabby's energy work as well as Frankie's past and future with Auntie O, were left open-ended enough for them to become more well-developed in future books.

I look forward to seeing this series develop further. 3.5 stars rounded up.

Thank you @netgalley and @crookedlanebooks for the ARC of "In the Wick of Time." This is the second book in the "A Magic Candle Shop Mystery" series. It is very much establishing a pattern I'm coming to recognizing these books will follow. These are also what I would call a magical cozy mystery but not your typical witchy one. The primary characters are what they call energy users. I kinda like this and wish my natural empath like abilities were like this, if I have to be an energy absorber why can't it be fair that if it drains me, it could also help me. Not how it works for real but would be cool.

It's interesting that despite them saying their abilities have to stay secret, they sure share it about a lot in this book. They even tell the cops they don't trust about magic and the person who was attacking them even. So, are we just going to keep pretending they're hiding what they are or accept people know now? Is this a route that's going to make us realize they all should have been talking to each other to begin with?

Things ended with some questions left unanswered. I will most likely keep reading these as they do keep me guessing.

Tabby and her twin Sage run the Book and candle shop. Sage's boss at the nursery has been ill for weeks. Sage begs him to go to the doctor and they have a big fight about it. Then later he does, the ME orders a tox screen and finds he's been poisoned. The police believe Sage or Frankie killed him. Tabby must investigate to find the real killer.

I really loved this book. I devoured it. I especially loved Eve and her abilities. I can't wait to read more of this series.

Tabby and Sage are working hard to keep the candle shop filled with goodies for the holiday season. While they may be twins, Tabby’s heart is inn her shop while Sage hopes to take run a nursery one day. After Sage has a confrontation with the current manager of the nursery and he is poisoned, Sage becomes the prime suspect.

Tabby is determined to clear her sister, but something is going on around her and she needs her aunt’s help to control her own powers. Unfortunately her aunt has run off to Florida with her boyfriend, whom has a criminal past. Is he running from a murder he committed? Tabby is going to do her best to figure it out…and control her powers at the same time.

Savannah is one of my favorite cities and this melange of candles, paranormal abilities and twin sisters make for an amazing series. The author really delivered in this second entry in the series and I’m totally hooked on this series. I can’t wait for more in the lives of Tabby and Sage.

I enjoyed this book much more than the first one in this series. I liked tabby more and I like Quig quite a bit. Sage, my opinion of her has not improved from the first book and I hope in the next book there is a redemption arc because as it is she is just awful. I also wish that the energy supernatural was a little more explained so I can understand a little better how it plays with others. The mystery was solid. I had no idea the motive and who the perpetrator was. I liked that other magic was introduced and used by townsfolk’s I thought that was a cool addition to the story. Thank you to NetGally for providing me this ARC to provide my honest unbiased opinion.

I absolutely love a good, magical and cozy mystery. This was my first time reading this author and I fell in love. I loved how the candle shop sounded, the bewitched boyfriend and murdered boss mystery was intriguing. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

In the Wick of Time by Valona Jones is wonderfully written and captures the sister bond perfectly. I love the entire package.

Will Tabby figure out what is going on in Savannah before she loses her sister?

Sage and Tabby Winslow
Our sleuths are fraternal twins, Sage and Tabby Winslow. However, our point of view is Tabby. Tabby is younger by a few minutes and shorter than Sage. They can use energy to do some really cool paranormal things. Tabby is still figuring out how her powers work, either through her candle and soap making or how she interacts with the people in her life. She can also read auras. Tabby has a beau who has waited for her to accept him for a long time. The intimacy feels right, but Sage is jealous of Tabby's relationship and the time that Tabby spends with Quig. Tabby is learning more about herself, and she is starting to place boundaries for other people.

I like Tabby. She has a sweet heart and wants to help others. However, she isn't good at asking for help, which I can understand. I think there is more to her boyfriend than meets the eye. I look forward to learning about that and why it is vital for Tabby's well-being.

Sage, the older sister, is a bit taller and needs more energy than she seems to be able to create on her own. Sage automatically starts pulling energy from Tabby as soon as they are together. Sage is happier with plants around, suggesting that has something to do with her magical power. To me, Sage seems like a hot mess. She isn't as nice as Tabby and sometimes lets her anger get the best of her. Sage also makes snap decisions and isn't easy to sway afterward. I like Sage, but I don't think she is entirely self-aware of how much her sister does for her. Also, Sage always thinks of herself first and then others.

The Mystery
We have a few things going on. First, we have the death of Sage's boss at the nursery, which, of course, Sage is a suspect. Then we have Aunt O's boyfriend's past, that seems to have jumped up and is biting everyone near them. Then we have Sage's boyfriend, possibly spelled or hexed. Sage is messed up with their break up and dealing with her feelings. Add in a few new people, some high school acquaintances with a grudge, and Ms. Jones has a fantastic mystery that kept me guessing.

Four Stars
I truly enjoyed this story. The mystery, the sister's bond, the paranormal aspect of the story, the grouchy police detectives, and the setting are all superb. My rating for In the Wick of Time by Valona Jones is four stars, and I recommend that you check it out. Hopefully, in the near future, I will be able to read the first book in the series, Snuffed Out.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of In the Wick of Time by Valona Jones.

IN THE WICK OF TIME by Valona Jones is the second book in the Magic Candle Shop Mystery series. It’s the fabulous story of fraternal twin sisters, Tabby and Sage Winslow, during the Christmas season in Savannah, Georgia, which means the riverfront luminary display, hopefully a busy season to help keep The Book and Candle Shop - the family business - afloat, juggling schedules and several magically hiccups (both figuratively and literally) to filter through.

While Sage and a fellow employee are both vying for the same assistant managers positions, their boss Loren Lee is found dead. The other employee is temporarily given the managerial position while Sage becomes the police’s main suspect. The twins know they will have to pull both their resources and powers to find proof of Sage’s innocence. The best possible way to do that may be to find out whodunit themselves. They soon find out that the murder is only one of their problems to deal with. Sage’s boyfriend, with who she had a very serious relationship, is found in a compromising situation, finds himself in the hospital after a suicide attempt and says he remembers none of it. Is he lying or under some sort of spell? After the twin’s Auntie O disappeared with her boyfriend Frankie, an energy vampire showed up looking for his “lost” cousin Frankie wreaking havoc everywhere he shows up. While they had hoped for a hefty season for the shop, how and why did this constant flow of customers determined to buy everything in sight come from? Then Tabby’s faithful cat disappears and Tabby starts experiencing spells of invisibility when she hiccups. How can things get any worse?

With little to no help from Detectives Chase Nowry and Sharmila Belfor, will they be able to find the answers? Every time they turn around the evidence is stacking up against Sage. With no doubt of her innocence, Tabby knows she will go to all lengths to prove her innocence, but where can they find disputing evidence that will point to someone else to having killed Loren? Sage and Tabby have special magically talents including being able to communicate telepathically. Will it be enough? To track down the real murderer, maybe they need to do it by process of elimination of who didn’t do it. Will a new employee, hired out of necessity, after trying to literally burn the candle at both ends, be of more help than as a worker in the shop? Through it all, the one thing Tabby can rely on is Quig, her boyfriend. He’s loved her for years and knew if he waited that one day they would be a couple. He believes in Sage’s innocence. He will do anything to protect Tabby and he may just have to prove that.

IN THE WICK OF TIME is the just right mixture of magic, misfortune, mystery, murder, misjudgment and mayhem that will keep you turning pages, hunting for clues and trying to figure out whodunit. You, too, will be hoping the stars align for the twins and happiness and tranquility to rein again for the Winslow family. Valona Jones gives us an intriguing story that will draw you in with the characters and keep you interested to the last page with the wide array of mysterious events and then ties it all together in this wonderful FIVE STAR story. Although part of a series, IN THE WICK OF TIME can most definitely be read as a standalone book.

In the Wick of Time is a twist on “ the paranormal cozy genre.” When I asked to preview Valona Jones I knew nothing about paranormal and its role in cozy mysteries. What I found was a good solid mystery and very satisfying.

I began by skimming some definitions of paranormal and learned that “paranormal events” were ones that go beyond natural, scientific understanding. It did not say they could not happen. Jones made the events of the story, in the southern town of Savanah, Georgia, believable.

Tabby and Sage Winslow are fraternal twins. They share the ownership and responsibilities for their own store, The Book and Candle Shop. As co-owners they work well together sharing business responsibilities. As twins go, they may share some physical traits and a certain telepathy but they have very different personalities. Tabby’s heart is in their shop while Sage works part-time at a local nursery, intent on owning her own one day.

It is the holiday season and their proverbial plates are full to overflowing keeping their candle shop filled with goodies. Business is hectic and getting busier when Sage's boss at the nursery is murdered and she becomes the primary suspect. Tabby is determined to clear her sister. Both girls know they share special powers and an incredible understanding of how to use them. Then, the magic begins.

The family owned book and candle shop, a few quirky characters and the potential for magic, provide the ingredients for a good read. However, In the Wick of Time came up short. Neither the characters nor the story flowed.

First, there were too many characters introduced in the first half. If the author knows she is going to need these characters for later books in the series, then she must make one of the main characters be the strongest. In this case, one of the twins needs to be the stronger sister. Sage is not likable. She is overdramatic and incredibly self-centered. Tabby, while likable, is all over the place. She dances around her magic and does not seem to take it's power seriously.

Then, Eve is introduced to the story and her character begins to correct some of the problems. Eve is the stabilizer. She is much more knowledgeable and in control of her own magic and recognizes the magic in others.

All that aside, I enjoyed In the Wick of Time and the its magic. There is a lot of potential in this series and the concept of the paranormal in cozy mysteries. I would recommend anything by Valona Jones and look forward to the next book in the Magic Candle Shop Mysteries.

I must thank Valona Jones for allowing me to read an ARC of In the Wick of Time. I am really looking forward to the next book in her Magic Candle Shop Mysteries.

This fall-into-season cozy mystery is perfect for the upcoming seasoning...treading into that pre-holiday time of year. The atmospheric vibes of the season...they are strong here,....candle shop, Christmas tree selling, and a strong family unit. Even a bit of magic tossed in.

Yet, there was something lacking for me personally. It took me some time to suss out what that was. This book checks all the cozy mystery boxes - atmosphere, family, friends, magic. It just did not pull me in. The characters weren't "likeable" until about 2/3 of the way in, prior to that I had no investment.

I struggled with the twin dynamic - one being more together and one acting like a child. Almost a good versus evil vibe here...as to how the personalities were set. One follows the rules and is perfect, and the other is clearly just doing whatever she wants with no consideration. I'm notsaying that siblings can't be different, but it was so extreme - twins usually seem more in tune with each other. This seemed like a one-directional relationship. They clearly loved each other, but there is some competition possibly with the magic, and some things left unexplained. .

The writing style also played a part in my low review. Lots of "fluff" or filler. You read one paragraph, that is similar to another - just stated in a different way. And the conversation/pages of text go in circles....without progressing the plot. For example, I'm so glad you're my sister, I love you, I want what's best for you, I'm so glad youre here, It's great to have the support of friends, we make a great team, and I am so happy for you. Sometimes this reaffirmation, and cyclical rounds would extend for pages. And I would just want the story to ....move onward. This type of talk surrounding scenes made them feel overly sappy and extended at times.

Lastly, the "magic" threw me. It wasn't really magic but more witchcraft-y. So not Halloween witch. Think Southern witchery - vibes, energy, herbs, ingredients. Which I think goes more toward voo-doo type. This was unexpected for me (I think I anticipated our witchy stereotype, I like the cover vibes). This threw me off, as I felt it had no clear rules just random "oh this happened and we aren't sure why" type things. I also dislike that several main characters are left in the dark about this going on around them.

Setting the Scene: Fraternal twins Sage and Tabby Winslow proverbial plates are full to overflowing between their shop, The Book and Candle Shop, and Sage's part-time gig at a local nursery, but things get even busier and crazier when Sage's boss at the nursery is murdered, Sage becomes a top suspect, and lots of different magic begins to show up quite unexpectedly.

What I Thought: This series and book have the elements to be both entertaining and interesting. Twins with a unique paranormal gift, a family owned book and candle shop, quirky characters like Auntie O, Quiq, and Gerard, all with their own potential for magic of some kind, provide great ingredients for a great read. However, and once again, while I still want to love this series and these characters, I struggled through the first half of the book. Sage is not likeable. She is overdramatic and incredibly self-centered. While likeable, Tabby is all over the place. They dance all around the magic, their own and the existence and type of any other. There are apparent contradictions in the story and pieces of dialog that make little sense. For instance, "I knew what to do because I had experience, but I preferred through Auntie O." Simply put, the story and characters just do not flow. Perhaps more research and better editing are needed. That said, the story took a turn for the better between the half and 2/3 mark. Some of that was due to the addition of a great character, Eve. Eve is no expert, but she is much more knowledgeable and in control of her magic, as well as recognizing magic in others. She brings a sense of order to the story that was woefully lacking. Tabby also stepped up and took some control, without alienating those around her. All in all, it was almost as if the latter part of the book was written or edited by a different person. The addition of Eve and the stabilization of relationships in the latter part of the book give me hope for this series, and I will read the next one in hopes that the improvements continue.
