Author, Brett McKay, asked for readers on GoodReads to read and review his book. This feels like a young adult science fiction story. Typically, I shy away from science fiction as well as YA and MG. The Intruders was less about the science fiction and more about the consistency of the characters with regards to their relationships. Dex is a solid man who puts his family first, always. I had a couple moments where I thought that wouldn't happen, however, as I continued to read I was wrong. I loved that there was not a 24 hour meet and live happily ever after relationship. Kudos to McKay. I didn't mind the flirting from Connor. I loved the well behaved young boys. All these things made the story fun. I wasn't rooting for the main character to die. I wasn't thinking about any of them, I was feeling the storyline. No spoilers. I thoroughly enjoyed being taken out of my historical fiction, memoir, history and Christian reading comfort zone.

There is minimal swearing, and I again give Kudos to McKay, I wasn't angry when the F word was spoken. The scene was written well, and barely noticeable. The author does not pad his book word count with excessive profanity or explicit sex. There isn't either. He uses sparingly in the heat of battle a few swear words. If this was an audiobook, I would not be concerned playing it aloud.

At the time of my review, I couldn't locate where I originally saw why there are author notes at the end of each chapter. Therefore, this may be moot, but I loved them. They were part of the story, and I was tickled by more than one. They give insight. I hope they are in the final print.

My favorite wording ... No Spoilers --- "let hell loose" (I hope I remember this.).

The story itself is not overdone with details. It felt realistic with minimal imagination. I was more than satisfied with the ending. The reactions were in my opinion spot-on. And, I agreed with the Dr. H storyline, and would have been pleased if you had left him alone. The final scene with Bennett and Dex was perfection in my eyes. (Team Dex!)

This book was so different from what I usually read, but I am glad I read it. Out of nowhere Dex and his family's lives completely change and they have to find a way to stop the intruders. Once I started I was unable to stop reading, and could not wait to see what the author had in store for us next. It is a fast-paced thriller and action-packed!! He does an excellent job setting the plot and describing the characters. I will absolutely be looking forward to more of his books.

Dex is a used car salesman who works hard to make ends meet to support his wife Reagan and their two sons. Although he hates his job, he chooses to make the most of it until something better comes along. Dex’s life seems normal until him and his family are suddenly kidnapped by strangers in the middle of the night. They are taken to an underground bunker and Dex is tortured and asked questions that he is unable to answer. When he cannot answer the questions, his kidnappers decide that Dex is of no use to them, and they now intend to kill Dex and his entire family.

Dex must act quickly to save himself and his family before it is too late. As Dex struggles to save his family from these vicious killers his entire life is changed. Not only is he fighting pure evil but in doing so he uncovers the terrifying truth that there is something far more sinister at work. Dex discovers that there are supernatural beings hiding amongst us and they intend to take over the world. The problem is that these beings are hiding amongst us in plain sight disguised as normal people. So, who can Dex trust to save him and his family?

I was completely blown away by this book and how well written it was. The author does an amazing job of capturing the reader’s attention from the first few pages which makes the book impossible to put down. The characters were well developed, and each scene was written in so much detail that it makes the reader feel as though they are there. Not only were the scenes written vividly but the author did a superb job of capturing each moment of action and suspense in a remarkable manner that few authors are able to do. The character of Dex develops throughout the book and as you read you learn more about him and what he can and will do to save his family from the danger that surrounds them wherever they go. The action is explosive and non-stop throughout as Dex, his family, and friends are on the run trying to save themselves and the world as they know it. I especially loved the author’s notes and thoughts written at the end of each chapter. I found it unique and interesting to read what his thoughts were while writing each scene. I cannot recommend this book enough and look forward to reading more from this brilliant and talented author!

This book’s forward explains that the book was first available on Amazon’s Vella platform which consists of serialized novels with an episode getting released each week over an extended period of time. Each episode would include a brief author’s note which, depending on the note, tends to do one or sometimes both of two things, at least in this author’s case. One thing it can do is give a glimpse into the process of writing a novel with comments on what prompted a particular characteristic of a person in the novel, the inspiration for a strange turn the story takes, or why the author included a particular event in the novel. These notes also often provide a bit of foreshadowing, giving a bit of a clue as to where the story is headed. Since I understood the full history of why and how these notes were there, I liked them and felt they added to the story. (Without that knowledge, I suspect they would have felt quite strange.)

The story itself kept me engrossed and involved in trying to figure out what was going to happen. The story world is pretty much a place that felt like an average town in the US in contemporary times with some strange things happening that don’t have a logical explanation for either the reader or Dex, the protagonist. Over time the explanation comes out, but the adventure the reader experiences with Dex as he, his family, and some others try to work through the complications caused by these strange happenings kept me engrossed to the very end.

Wow what a story this was. It is a great Thriller that had me hooked from the first page. I just couldn't stop reading which to me is a sign of a good book. The author has put a lot of effort into getting inside the minds of the characters and it has really paid off in the writing. You feel you are beside the characters and witnessing and feeling everything first hand which only makes the story more compelling. The insight into the characters mind also makes them more real and not just some words on the page.

Dex is a loving father and husband. He's a bit down on his luck but he will do anything for his family. He seems stuck in his dead end job until the day a strange package arrives.
Dex doesn't open the package however so has no idea what is about to happen.
When strangers break into his house and kidnap Dex and his wife and kids, Dex's whole world is turned upside down.
Now he faces unimaginable torture while the strange men try to get answers from him. But he doesn't have any answers?
What follows is a really painful time as he is tortured, while they try to get to answer he doesn't possess.
Can Dex escape this hell and find a way of saving himself and his family? What do these people want? And is there some connection to Dex that even he isn't aware of.

This book is a gripping fast paced read that will keep you hooked. It is full of danger and tension and will take you on a rollercoaster of a ride as the story unravels.

The intruders- Dex is a car salesman, he used to have a better job, but he walked away from that because he was gone from his family for too long. So he quit, got a local job, then something horrifying happens. His house is broken into, him, his wife, and two kids are kidnapped. These intruders seem to know everything about Dex’s life. His parents, their passing, his childhood best friend and his passing. They get Dex to spill his heart but it doesn’t seem to be enough. Dr H(the main kidnapper) wants to know everything and who is in charge. Dex makes a deal, his wife And children have blankets, pillows, and food and he will give them the information Dr H wants.
Dex and his family are able to escape thanks to Connor, but now they have to live life on the lam, they have to watch out for these groups that are kidnapping and torturing people. The silver eyed people are running for the government and it has to stop or this chaos will still continue on.
Really enjoying the authors notes at the end of each chapter because it gives you an insider of what they were thinking writing that chapter. I also enjoy that the very first chapter was the last, but now it’s not. So when you get to the end, re read the first chapter. This was such a fantastic read and so fast paced! I really enjoyed this and cannot wait to read more!

This book really brought on the wow factor as well as the blow your mind factors as well! I was intrigued all the way through! The story had a mix of everything, I cant say it was one specific genre. And those specific words made this book all more appealing. I simply must say I was amazed and fascinated as I read!

The writing was spot on, and the author knew how to draw the reader in and hold them there to the final word on the final page. The horror side of this story really appealed to me, but then we got into some sci-fi elements, and my mind was blown. Personally the author notes of thoughts after each conclusion of a chapter, was a welcoming touch. I enjoyed reading the author's thoughts as to why it was written how it was. The characters were great, realistic, and certainly had strong character development, but Dex really was well written. Family man, supports his family, but when danger strikes, he steps up and does whatever he must. The book was a tornado of events and emotions! I could not put this one down Freaking loved it!

I cannot say good enough things about this book or the talented author. You must experience my recommendation for yourself. Highly recommend. A must read for sure-to both the author and book!

The Intruders by Brett McKay is a bit of a gripping supernatural thriller. This is my first book from Mr. McKay so I was excited to see what he could do.
I was immediately pulled into the story, avidly reading along to find out how things played out in the end. I was so engrossed that I ended up reading the whole book in one sitting. I didn’t need sleep. I needed answers lol.
Dex Sanders is a down on his luck husband and father. Scraping by as a car salesman just to make ends meet. But what happens when strange things begin to happen? An odd package arrives. Then dangerous intruders abduct him and his family- and then try to torture information out of him? Things couldn’t get worse. Or could they? Dex will need to dig deep, and try to keep his wits about him if he has any chance of finding a way to escape to save his family and himself- oh, and the world while he’s at it.
An intense story full of danger, dramatic developments, action, violence, agendas, time running out, high stakes, discovery, challenges, a powerful supernatural force, deadly & determined killers, and a whole lot of nail-biting tension…. it’s well worth the read to discover all the gripping details for yourself.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Brett McKay!

The Intruders, originally published on Amazon’s Vella Platform is now an ebook. While I found the author’s notes at the end of each chapter to be distracting as I read; by the third chapter I skipped them, and the pace of the story flowed well. The story that Brett McKay brings to life was thrilling to read.
Dex Sanders is making his way through life as a car salesman, a career he’d like to change. He is a devoted husband and father. His life is turned upside down in the blink of an eye. Dex, his wife and children are abducted in the middle of the night and taken to an unknown place. When he is faced with a life-or-death situation, Dex only wants to keep his wife and children from harm’s way.
When an opportunity to escape is revealed, Dex and his family take refuge in a hotel with the police to protect them; however, can they trust the police, or anyone else?
Without giving away any details of the story, this book is action packed, fast-paced and I enjoyed reading it. I easily connected with the characters and rooted for them to triumph from start to finish.
I would recommend reading this book.

The Intruders by Brett McKay

The Intruders is a fast paced Supernatural Thriller that is packed with action ,mystery and suspense. This is one of those books that will pull you in from the beginning and has your on the edge of your seat trying to put all the pieces together to figure out what is going to happen next. Im going to be honest I wasn’t real sure going in what to expect but I was intrigued by the title and the over. Boy am I glad I grabbed this book. This is a new to me author and hos style of writing and attention to detail make it seem so real. The characters are developed and make the story come to life. I literally read this in one afternoon I had to know what was going to happen next. This is a story about Dex , he’s a family man who works as a used car salesman and finds himself in a situation where he’s being held in a basement . Can they escape from the torture they’ve endured? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I don’t want to giveaway anymore. If you’re into this genre this is one you don’t want to miss. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.

Dex is a used car salesman, just waiting for a better job to come along. However, his wife and kids need him and he will continue his unfulfilling job to provide for them until a better one comes along. One night, while checking the lot, Dex meets a silver eyed man. That same evening, he gets a delivery on his doorstep and everything changes from here.

Dex and his family are kidnapped by intruders and end up in a bunker, with Dex begins being tortured for the answers to some very strange questions. When he can't answer them, they figure they've gotten the wrong man, but now that they've kidnapped the family already, they need to just kill them.
The rest of the story is a race for Dex to save his family and figure out the secret behind the strange delivery before anyone catches up with them.

The descriptions in this book are excellent and keep you enthralled and flipping the pages. The solidness of Dex and his dedication to his family makes for a great read, but not in a way that makes it predictable. Twists and turns at every corner. The author includes notes at the end of each chapter, which I really enjoyed. It was nice seeing how one thing led to another in his head.

Looking for an interesting thriller type story? This author has one for you. The Intruders are just that.... intruders...beings that don’t belong and don’t mean well for human kind. The story is well written with main character Dex leading the way most of the time. His family is pretty important to him and the story. Other characters stand out as well. Connor, Quinn and Pam just to name a few.

Towards the climax of this story, I did not think Dex would find a way to overcome the intruders...as I write this review, I still have about 10 mins left to read and I am still wondering if all will be well!!! Definitely being kept on the edge of my seat while reading this adventure.

Interesting fun fact. This author includes an author’s note after each chapter. While that is something new to me, it brought a little bit of insight to the story from the author. It was weird at first for me but by the end of the story I was looking forward to seeing what he had to say.

I’d be interested in what else this author writes. Maybe another world saving mission for Dex!

The Intruders was originally published on Amazon’s Vella platform and was released a chapter at a time. Along with the story, there are author notes at the end of each chapter. These are insights to what Brett McKay was thinking in his writing, some foreshadowing on the story, and some explanation about the events written about.

The Intruders by Brett McKay is an action, fast-paced, read. It was a fun read that can be moved from one chapter to the next. The concepts of the supernatural/fantastic/science fiction aspect of the story are introduced in portions that allowed it to be understood without needing to take time out to think it through.

Brett McKay is introducing a world where we are experiencing an alien invasion and the story is destined to be continued.

I recommend The Intruders to readers who like an easy reading, science-fiction with a touch of a darker side that is part of a thriller chase.

What a unique book and a very interesting, new-to-me author! I was surprised to see how this book is set up to include the author's notes. At first I wasn't sure how I would feel about it but I've decided that I really loved it for this book. It's great to get in the mind of the writer and see where they were going with something, or why they chose to write the scene the way they did. I really appreciate this unique angle.

Now about the book....wow!!! It grabs you from the first word and just doesn't let go until it's over! Dex is a regular ole car salesman, a family man. Regan, his wife is lovely and has her hands full with their two boys. They find themselves abducted and in a weird place, enduring all sorts of torture until they can escape. Or have they really escaped?

This ones got some pretty cool nuggets in it and I think they enhance the story even more. I look forward to reading more of this author's work!

Whoa! Who knew that a book written about a used car salesman could be so entertaining? I truly mean it when I say...what a book!! This was an intense, thrilling, terrifying story! Brett had such spectacular descriptions of everything, so much detail made the book that much better. The fighting scenes were extremely detailed, it was amazing the thought process that went into the way he explained how someone was hurt. Dex (the main character) goes from plain ol' used car salesman to a badass! The plot, characters, all of it...truly amazing! Also, the way that Brett included his author notes after each chapter and didn't spoil anything about the plot was AWESOME! I don't think I have ever read a book that the author took time to include their notes! This was my first book by Brett, and I’ll definitely be checking out some of his other books. I love page turners and books that I can't put down, and this was definitely one of those type of books!

The Intruders by Brett McKay. Oh yall....this book was amazing. It's my favorite genre which is thriller mysteries. Its the story of Dex who is a used car salesman. He has a pretty normal life, he quit a higher paying job so that he could spend more time with his family. One night him and his wife and kids are kidnapped after their house is broken into. Dex has never seen these people before but they know everything about him and his life. Trying to make his family more comfortable he makes a deal with them that he will tell them everything he knows if they will take care of his family. Its still not enough. These silver eyed people are everywhere and they are kidnapping people all over. When Dex's family is able to escape with the help of a friend they are basically on the run. When you start this book you better buckle up because it is a fast paced read until you are finished kind of book. I loved it!

Wow, what a book! I loved this story so damn much! It was intense, thrilling, terrifying and the way Brett had such great descriptions of everything, made it that much better. The fighting scenes, the way he explained how someone was hurt. Simply amazing. Dex is a badass and I loved every character in this book. The plot, characters, all of it..simply great. And Brett has author notes after each chapter and I LOOOVED that. I’ve never read a book with that in it. Gives such great insight on the story and why he wrote what he wrote. My first book by Brett and I’ll definitely be checking out his others. Was a real page turner for me and I read it in one sitting. Every time I tried to put my kindle down to do something, I picked it back up. It was THAT good that I had to continue and finish to the end. HIGHLY recommend.

Wow! This is quite the thriller. Dex just wants to change his life for the better but ends up having a horrible ride that puts his whole family at risk. This book is scary, original, entertaining and very engaging. The author includes his thoughts in between each chapter. This was new to me. I understand that this book started out on Vella and that is why the format. I came to like it because you got a glimpse into the process of how the story came about which added another level to it. A definite thriller that creeps you eye. Those silver eyes gave me goosebumps. The characters, right down to the minute details, are so spot on and relatable that you can feel a piece of yourself in them. The plot flows fairly smooth. I recommend this for all those thrill seekers out there. Don't forget to check over yoru shoulder.

The Intruders is a fast-paced supernatural thriller and my first read of Casey’s work. Let me tell you I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly intrigued. This is one book that you just can’t put down because you have to know what comes next and so on. To say I was engrossed in the story is an understatement.

Casey has cleverly woven plot is full of suspense and the intensity of the story is palpable. Jumping off the pages to have you on the edge of your seat and looking in those dark corners to see if anything is waiting in the dark.

I am not going to give anything away but suffice it to say this is one book you do not want to miss out on. With danger and violence, supernatural happenings and action this has something for anyone who loves this genre.

I look forward to see what else this author has.

This novel was a great thriller. It was very original and the plot seemed very well planned out. The characters also appear to have some personal flares added to them. It is obvious that the author put a good amount of heart and soul into this book. One of the main reasons I know this, is because of the author notes at the end of each chapter. Those notes were a nice way of connecting with the author, but I felt there were too many. Sometimes it felt like the author was just trying to fill space, which is one of the downsides of this book.

You can definitely get away with just not reading the author notes, but they were often fun and/or informative; there were few times they felt like filler notes. I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for an original plot and good characters that were handled with great care.

Dex is a struggling used car salesman just trying to make ends meet when he and his family are abducted by a group of armed men in the night. Even when they torture Dex he can think of no reason why he and his family have been targeted. When their captors assume they have to wrong guy, Dex and his family are marked for execution. They must escape the underground bunker and work out what is going on - who are they? And who did they think Dex was?

This was great! The pacing was perfect and the supernatural elements showed such creativity. Dex was such a likeable character. I was really invested in his family’s safety. All of the characters were written so well that they came to life and had me gasping when the intensity increased. Really enjoyed the action throughout and was satisfied with the ending.

If you enjoy a bit of action and badassery, then this is worth your time!

I absolutely love the way Brett McKay writes. He includes author’s notes at the end of each chapter which I’ve never seen any author do. I enjoyed reading them along with the rest of the book, and the flow of the story was amazing.

Dex is tired of his job as a car-salesman, and that was even before he saw a creepy man there. The sight of this stranger set off every instinctual alarm Dex had, but since he seemed to vanish, he tried to forget about it. He receives a mysterious package, but he shrugs it off until he and his family were kidnapped. Will Dex be able to save his family, or will they all perish together?

This book was a non-stop thrill ride trying to figure out what was happening. It is extremely fast-paced and I hope to hear more from this author. I highly recommend this book especially if you like supernatural thrillers!

Beginning in chapter one, the reader is pulled into the life of Dex, is at a crappy car sales job during the day, and writes a novel at night (this reminds me of Tom Clancy and his debut novel- sales by day, writer by night). Dax sees a strange man at the end of his shift and gets a mysterious package in the mail. This piques curiosity for the reader and you want to know more about this stranger he sees. The cover only gives a hint at the strange supernatural events that unfold. The Intruders is full of action, danger, high-stakes, supernatural forces, and gripping details that keep the reader turning page after page. The transition from Kindle Vella felt like a smooth read and enjoyed reading the story!

If you are looking for a fast paced, action packed, sci-fi thriller then pick this one up.

The Intruders by Brett McKay follows the story of Dex, a car salesman who who notices a strange man outside of his dealership. He shrugs it off, goes home to his family and then....everything changes. Dex and his family are abducted and tortured for information he doesn't have. Can Dex save himself and his family? Is this entire horrifying situation more than what it seems?

This book is different then my usual psychological thriller reads yet it was quite enjoyable. It was fast paced, easy to read and action packed. Every chapter was almost like an episode to a action series. So grab this novel if you want something to keep your attention while exploring some sci-fi.

Happy Reading

This was a good 4 star read. This was a different genre than what I typically read but I really enjoyed it. Dex is a true family man and is trying to keep things together for his family. He left a good job due to being gone so much and went with a job that was close to home. Things take a scary twist when his family is kidnapped from their home. WIll he be able to keep his family safe? What do the kidnappers want?

Overall this was an edge of your seat read. The author does a great job with his writing and it pulls you right in. I like how he would have notes at the end of each chapter. The ending has left me wondering if we will see another book. I look forward to reading more from this author. 1-click and get started today.

Should NOT be labeled as Horror Fiction on Scribd or anywhere else.....it is not.

For what started out as an INTENSE and terrifying situation for a young Father and his family, turned into just what I thought it was going to be. A sci-fi wanna be James Cameron story. I had this figured out at around 46% of the audiobook. That as it got even more ridiculous when the character starts to read a book given to him and he is told 'to read this....', I then knew where it was going. I started out LOVING this intense story, and then I ended up thinking I should have DNF'd it at the point with the book. Cannot recommend this Sci Fi tale. I hate sci fi wanna be horror stories, and this is one of those.

What kind of knowledge would a down and out car salesman possess? Dex's captors thought it was important enough to abduct his whole family. After many hours of torture the abductors realize that they have nabbed the wrong guy. Now with his life and that of his family are marked for death he must find a way to free them. Will he be successful? This was a book that started out with action and never let up the whole way through. If you like books that have twists and turns and will keep you turning the pages I suggest you give this a try. This was the first book inhave read by this author and I was not disappointed. If any of his other books are anything like this one he has gained a new fan.

This book caught my attention from the moment I read the description and it kept it right until the last page. I knew this was a book I had to read to find out what was going on. I really enjoyed the main character in this book. I was rooting for him the whole way through to figure things out. The connection between him and his family was just great to read.
This is a new author to me and I loved the paced they injected into the book. It was exciting and a thrill to read. I couldn’t put the book down because I just had to know what was going to happen and how things would turn out. This was a truly great book and I can’t wait to discover more of this authors work.

This book was completely different from many other books that I have read. To be quite honest, I didn’t know if I liked it or didn’t like it, but at the same time, I could not put it down. Dex Sanders and his wife Reagan find themselves kidnapped and have no idea why. Thus begins a story of conspiracy and secrets so big it affects the entire world. I enjoyed the action as Dex and others fight the aliens from taking over the world and killing them. Also, the author made comments after every chapter. It was really interesting to read his thoughts. I loved the little side story of Pam and Connor. There will definitely be other books, and I look forward to reading them as well.

This was the first time I’ve read Brett McKay and I was glad I did. This book was action packed from the start. I was hooked from the beginning. If you want something different, then grab this one. The odd thing I noticed was the author’s notes at the end of every chapter. I was afraid that it was going to give to much away for the next chapter but as I read the more, I looked forward to them. The author’s notes were new to me since I’ve never seen an author write this way. I have to give it to him; he wrote a very good story and one that I will watching and to read more stories by him.
