Leanne Leeds is an enchanting storyteller who spins magical tales of mystery, humor, and heart. Her whimsical contemporary paranormal mystery novels whisk readers away to a world where magic feels familiar and adventure waits around every corner.
With a charming voice and sprinkle of good-natured wit on every page, Leanne crafts stories as unexpected as they are captivating. Her quirky characters and serendipitous events intersect in delightfully unforeseen ways, delivering a reading experience as cozy as it is enthralling. Whether reading her paranormal cozies or paranormal women's fiction, readers will find a touch of enchantment in each word.
Crystals, Belladonna, and Murder shares the story of Ellie, divorce mother of an adult child with mental and medical issues. Ellie left corporate America and the big city to start a simpler life filled with purpose, so she and her daughter opened a cat rescue in small town Texas. However after five years of quiet, life gets complicated when an elderly local is arrested for killing her husband, and Ellie is tasked with taking care of her aging cat, Belladonna, and the magical tray which allows Belladonna to speak to Evie and Ellie.
I love a good cozy mystery and was excited to give this new-to-me author a try. While Crystals, Belladonna, and Murder had a decent mystery, I felt the overall execution of the story falls flat. The magical item that allows communication with Belladonna is too convenient, and the characters are mostly two-dimensional.
The silver and crystal tray with a hidden compartment is an odd magical item, and there is no explanation of its origins or how Fiona came to possess it. When Belladonna stands on it, she can speak human words, with a large vocabulary and keen understanding of the English language. It’s possible that Fiona taught her 20-year-old cat a thing or two; however it’s implied it works with other cats, too. I find it a bit of a stretch that even though the cats aren’t magical, they have the ability for complex reasoning and language.
Much of the front end of the book is spent learning about Ellie and her daughter, Evie. Unfortunately, I found the pair boring. Evie’s disabilities coupled with Ellie’s reactions felt over the top at times. While it may be an accurate picture of a family with an adult child with disabilities, the time spent on the characters without discussion of the murder detracted from the mystery. Both individuals are fairly simple without a lot of character development. However, Ellie’s worries over a windfall of cash and the reasons she moved to the town and opened up the shelter are genuine and the only time I felt her character was more.
Narration: The story is shared in the first person, past tense of Ellie. The narrator has a softer, slow voice that suits the weary Ellie. The speed of the narrator gives the dialogue a very purposeful sense, even when it’s just banter. Kelly alters each voice based on gender and age, although some characters sound similar. Males are deeper, but also slower, which often comes across as someone with speech issues. The narrator significantly alters her voice for Evie, but she comes across as a preteen rather than a mid-20-something.
In the end, there are a lot of clues tossed around, but they don’t necessarily tie together in an effective manner. Crystals, Belladonna, and Murder held promise, but ultimately disappointed.
This was a great read! I always enjoy when there are animals involved within a cozy mystery! It's always even better when they are doing something better for the community like a cat sanctuary and rescue!! It just shows how much of a great person Ellie is, and how much she cares.
Ellie is such a strong woman who has a lot on her plate. I appreciate a woman who can fare the world with so much in her life and still being able to hold it together. Having a daughter with disabilities can be super challenging, but wouldn't distance herself just because she could do things on her own.
This storyline was one that I never would have expected to encounter. Especially when you always see movies or hear about people giving their inheritance to an animal rescue. Even with the stipulations it was wild to see it in print. And unfortunately you always have the struggle of going from there because people will always want what isn't theirs.
I really enjoyed the supporting characters that helped make so much happen for the rescue and the story!! I just hope that there will be more with these characters and we can explore more about them!
I’m disappointed, I didn’t get that happy feeling I normally do get, 3.5 stars
I’m such a fan of Leeds’ books, and I was so excited for this book, but somehow, this particular one wasn’t my favorite. And I do know why. The whole vibe didn’t feel lighthearted enough, there was a lot of negativity, and unkind people. Ellie described her daughter Evie as a kind soul, but she came across as selfish and angry. Evie was constantly nagging about the small stuff. I didn’t like who Ellie became when in conversation with her daughter. Their dynamic felt all wrong, I didn’t like the communication between mother and daughter, with the exception of at the end. Normally I look for books that make me feel happy and this one failed at that.
But I did enjoy the fact that the cat could talk. And I did see that there was a certain skill in the writing, it’s well written, with good flow, and has a smooth way about it. I did want to finish the book and see whodunit. The mystery was clever and the solution satisfying. But will I read the next one in this series? I’m just not sure.
I really enjoyed this book. The mystery was compelling. The cat rescue was a great setting. And I absolutely loved the disability representation. We need more disability representation in books in general, but definitely in cozy mysteries! I can’t wait to continue this series.
I really enjoyed this First Cozy mystery in the series. Good well developed characters and an interesting plot. I thought Evie's disability was well handled and I felt her frustrations having a severe disability myself. I thought Meghan Kellys narration was second to none and made a good book excellent.
It was good. Not the greatest and the end of the book explains why "Portions of this book was created, edited, and proof read with AI." Even the cover was created with AI and that I cannot abide. I am an artist and when you use AI other artist's works are used in the creation of your NOT original art. You are ripping off artists. As I understand it it is like photoshopping pictures together only it uses other people's art. Some woman on Etsy uses it to make stationary products and I can see the 'inspirations' from artists I have watched on youtube. If I could remember this one artists name I'd let her know one of her more famous works was in this other person's Etsy shop slightly altered but highly recognizable.
AI sucks ass. It is lazy af. Can't respect it.
The magic platter the cat sits on to talk starts out being called a mirror, platter, cocktail tray, and then an actual table which implies it has legs. And it is a dumb idea with limitations and the main character is an idiot.
And I am not a fan of the characters or the disabled rep which does nothing for the story. You should write and sweat over your books yourself not use some damn computer to create the story for you. Have all you woketards gotten that lazy and have no talent or desire to do the work yourselves at all?
Crystals, Belladonna, and Murder Silver Circle Cat Rescue Mysteries, Book 1 By: Leanne Leeds Narrated by: Meghan Kelly
This is my first book written by Leanne Leeds, I enjoyed her writing style, the characters and storylines she created are interesting and original. It did not have as much lighthearted charm or humor as I expect in a cozy mystery, but its uniqueness and paranormal twist made up for that. Eleanor “Ellie” Rockwell was laid off from her job, instead of looking for another desk job in the city she took her severance pay, moved to a small town and opened up a cat rescue with her special needs daughter, Evie. She is getting by and making ends meet, but everything changes after the town’s former mayor, Fiona Blackwell, is arrested for murdering her husband Beau and the town’s Deputy takes Fiona’s cat, Belladonna, into Ellie’s rescue to be cared for. Belladonna is no ordinary cat, she has supernatural powers, and it seems others are interested in her. Then Fiona is killed and there are some surprises at the reading of her will and not all are happy with Fiona’s last wishes. With help from an unexpected source, Ellie tries to figure out who murdered Fiona and Beau and why. There is never a dull moment in this cleverly plotted mystery, it keeps you thinking and on your toes all the way to the end. Leanne Leeds, thank you for this great story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Meghan Kelly does an amazing job bringing these characters to life and does so with a complete understanding of who they are, giving each their own voice, one that suits their persona to a tee. She covers the voices for all the characters, does a wonderful job performing the roles for both the male and female characters and is believable in every role she plays. She sets the perfect tone for the story, captures all the character’s emotions which are heard in her performance. Kelly is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another amazing listen.
Overall: 5 of 5 stars Performance: 5 of 5 stars Story: 5 of 5 stars Reviewed: 02-20-23
Ellie has her hands full! What with running a furiously growing cat shelter and trying to be there for her daughter Evie, the last thing she needs is to be knee deep in a murder investigation! Then there’s that odd silver tray, the talking kitty, and the fear that everyone will think she’s nuts! “Crystals, Belladonna and Murder” brilliantly kicks off the new Silver Circle Cat Rescue cozy paranormal mystery series! This was a totally different experience for me. I’ve never listened to a cozy mystery where the characters faced the challenges that Ellie and especially Evie face every day! Their story is woven beautifully into the mystery at hand, making this story a compelling listen on so many levels! No spoilers! Just know that there is nothing naughty going on! These characters, ALL these characters are DELIGHTFULLY realistic, so much so that I wanted to put a few on “time out”! The dialogue, so realistic that I swear I heard those very words, those sentences, coming out of my kids mouths, my mothers mouth, back in the day! It rings that true! It’s that believable! The flow of the story is perfect. From beginning to end, it all makes sense! It kept me engaged. It kept me listening and guessing, wrongly or course, who done it! When the reveal came, I was surprised, but once all the facts came to light, I got It! It all made brilliant, beautiful sense! The narration was fantastic, the voicing choices so perfectly fitting each character’s personality, so clear, truly bringing the authors beautiful words to life! I loved everything about this one. Five fabulous stars!
This was an interesting start to a new series, but I’m not sure that I will be continuing. Honestly, the main reason why I gave it a try is that I have begun to take an interest in cozy mysteries. I enjoy them as a nice palate cleanser in between my normal romance listens. And I liked the fact that the narrator was one that I have really enjoyed in the past. To be completely honest, the fact that I once again enjoyed the narrator’s performance is probably one of the main reasons that I even finished this story.
It started off pretty good but then I felt like the story didn’t progress very quickly. Or maybe it was just me that felt like more should be going on. Also, if I’m completely honest, while I am a big fan of cats in general, I didn’t really care for Belladonna. So not liking the cat that this story centered around was kind of problematic. For me she came across more snarky and rude then the casual, unaffected cat persona I think the author was going for. I thought there was an interesting dynamic between who I consider to be the main character, Ellie and her daughter. I liked her dynamic with her daughter. And I liked the nice little group of friends and coworkers she had around her. But the story at points kind of felt like it dragged on for me. And then things really picked up towards the end. However, I am just not sure that it was enough for me to continue the series.
I did enjoy this book but the story was so focused on the main character and the inheritance she received, I wondered if the mystery would ever get solved. I am not sure I would call it a mystery as no what I call investigating went on like asking question of suspects ect instead the murder just unfolded with no help. I liked the plot line, of owning a cat rescue centre with a talking cat but the cat was only a bit character and I think I was expecting more. Although it is set up for the next book. The characters were unusual with the situations they faced, which was interesting but it's getting the balance right and I am not sure the author did. Eleanor is surprised when Deputy Markham rings to ask if he can drop of a cat, usually he just turns up but this cat is special. First her owner has just been arrested for murdering her ex husband and second the cat comes with a silver tray. While touching the tray the cat can talk and she claims her owner is innocent. Before Eleanor can ask Fiona about the strange tray and her cat, she too is murdered. Leaving Eleanor and the cat shelter a whole lot of money and headaches. Will Eleanor as now the cats owner be the next victim or is deaths nothing to do with the cat? I liked the narrator. She had a pleasant voice which she used well. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Acquired Kindle edition when offered free on Amazon.
I suppose I'm expected to respect the author for admitting she used AI to help her produce this novel. Ideas are a dime a dozen, so bragging that the concept was hers doesn't mean much. I have far more respect for the poor soul who actually writes their dreadful book than I will ever have for anyone who relies on a bot, trained on stolen texts of other real writers, to do the actual work of writing.
That said, this was still a dreadful book. Oh, the concept was fine, but most of them are. The execution, however, sucked.
All the characters were flat, two dimensional. It's one thing to tell the reader that Ellie is plus-sized; the bot should have shown the reader. A real writer would know how to do that.
Landon is creepy. Markham is incompetent.
The whole section on the corporate structure of the non-profit was really WTF? What does it matter and who cares anyway?
Character names caused some rolling of eyes. H.L. Hunt was a real person, a real Texan. A sporting goods store named Bowell's??? Are you serious?
Fake names for social media sites when you still have good old' Walmart seems unnecessary.
So not only was this book written with assistance from AI, but it wasn't written very well. Really dreadful.
I had the pleasure of listening to Crystals, Belladonna, and Murder by Leanne Leeds, and I must say, it was an enjoyable experience. This was my first book by Leeds, and I was impressed with the pacing, little bits of humor, and overall “feel” of the story.
Although this was one of my first cozy mysteries, I found the book charming and mysterious (which I think is the whole point of cozy mysteries). The story kept throwing curveballs at me, and just when I thought I knew what was going on, I was way off. I enjoyed the way Leeds kept me guessing throughout the entire book.
The plot itself, while at times felt a bit overdramatic, I found it to be just right for this style of book. As I mentioned above, Leeds kept me guessing, and paranormal/magic elements were welcome and added quite a bit to this story.
The narration by Meghan Kelly was excellent, and she added the right level of sass/snark to certain scenes while keeping the story moving along. Her pacing was perfect, and I found myself fully immersed in the story.
Overall, Crystals, Belladonna, and Murder was a great listen, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a charming and mysterious cozy mystery.
This was an interesting and entertaining book with some great characters. I will read the next one in the series right away!

Great Cozy Mystery! – Audiobook Review 🎧 This is the first book in the Silver Circle Cat Rescue Mysteries series. You don’t have to be a cat lover to enjoy this story! Ellie Rockwell and her daughter Evie move to Tablerock, TX to open a cat shelter. The police bring her the former mayor’s cat, Belladonna and her tray, after she was accused of murdering her estranged husband. Then the cat seems to be talking, and things really get bizarre. You’ll want to check out this book to find out who the murderer is and if this cat is really talking. I enjoyed this cozy mystery and the characters in it. There was a hint of romance and some action and mystery. Meghan Kelly’s narration is awesome as always. Her performance brings these characters and the story to life. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
This is the first book in a new series starring Eleanor “Ellie” and Evette “Evie” Rockwell as the owners of the Silver Circle Cat Rescue. To be perfectly honest, my initial reaction was “WOW!” I retired as a Director after 29 years spent working with individuals with disabilities and couldn’t be more excited about these characters! I absolutely love Evie and the way the author understands and describes her challenges. And far too often the family members and friends are inadvertently forgotten in their supporting roles, including the significant impact on their lives as they put their own lives on hold in order to be there for the one they love. Bravo!!
Add to this the intriguing plot with magical trays and snarky felines, and you’ve got a winner! I can’t wait to return to Silver Circle Cat Rescue and spend more time with my new friends!
Eleanor Rockwell and her daughter Evie moved to Tablerock Texas and opened the Silver Circle Cat Rescue. They made a success of the rescue and are able to keep it going. They’re surprised when the police bring a cat and a cocktail tray for them to take care of. The owner has been arrested for killing her husband. She insisted that her cat, Belladonna, and the cocktail tray be brought to the rescue. No one understands the cocktail tray until Belladonna has something to say. Unfortunately, her owner is killed and Eleanor has to become more involved. There’s a lot going on in this murder and lots of surprises for the cat rescue.
This is the first in a new series. I loved the engaging characters and mystery. I look forward to many more in this series.
This was an easy breezy read but there were some parts a little confusing when parts of the plot were being revealed in regards to the killer. It was like the thoughts were jumbled and putting it to paper was not helping. Aside from that the overall story was good, I was however disappointed that it was another murder mystery, I was hoping for something more original. I don't think I will continue the series for that alone because it's so played out. I did like that we had a talking cat in the story, that was probably the highlight. I was also impressed by the proofreading, kudos to the author.
So if you're a fan of these types of stories, you will most likely enjoy but if you're tired of magic and murder pass on it.
I've thoroughly enjoyed another series by author Leanne Leeds, so I was happy to dive into this book.
The story starts slowly as a new world and cast of characters get introduced to us. The murders occur early in the book, but the real action doesn't start until the second half. By the time we finished, the main characters were well-developed and the town felt quite familiar. The story is told from Ellie's point of view so we only know what she is thinking and observing.
Belladonna, the titular cat, is a bit of a scene stealer. Ellie proves she can make it on her own but is going to have a lot of support in future stories and maybe a bit of romance.
This was my first listen/read by Leanne Leeds and I enjoyed it. It has wonderful characters that stick out and a steady plot that kept my attention throughout. Eleanor and Evie have a great mother-daughter relationship and Ms. Leeds does an amazing job of talking about Evie's disabilities and giving knowledge on how tough it can be for both the parent and the child living with it. Meghan Kelly does a fantastic job of always giving each character their flair. Overall a great listen if you're looking for a cozy mystery, I"m interested in hearing what else will happen with Belladonna and the Silver Circle Cat Rescue.
Instead of saying what I liked about this book I will say what I didn't like: NOTHING. But I will anyway, it was entertaining, engaging , wonderous and held my attention very well, if distracted I even re listened to some parts. The characters were realistic and inspired empathy when needed, the cats are adorable and don't you think I missed that hook line comment near the end of the book, Leanne Leeds, I didn't. Therefore I am raring to listen to the next book and I think I know just which cat that comment refers too! The narrator did a fantastic job as usual, such an easy listening voice. RECOMMENDED CLEAN MAGICAL MYSTERY
First off I have never before read/listen to this Author's work. I have a very difficult time getting through this books first several chapters!! By the end of the book I finally found so interest so will listen to book 2 to see. Narrator does a good job with the various characters and Storyline.
It makes a change for the main character to be older. It makes it easier to identify with her when you are of a similar age. I love the way the 'heroine' stumbles upon clues and does not give up. I hope in following books, that I can't wait to read, she will take a chance on the love that is bubbling beneath the surface. She deserves it! The cats add to the enjoyment of the story, I don't want to say more and ruin the book for you. If you love cats and families with mystery and magic thrown in, this is the series for you.
I'm a huge fan of narrator Meghan Kelly and she did such a tremendous job with this! Leanne Leeds is a new to me authors, but I'll definitely be checking out more of her titles!!
My rating scale: 5☆ - I loved this book and it brought out true emotion in me (laughter, anger, a good cry, etc) 4☆ - I loved this book. 3☆ - I liked this book. 2☆ - I didn't really care for this book. 1☆ - I did not like this book at all and probably did not finish it.
This was my first Leanne Leeds's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Silver Circle Cat Rescue Mysteries Series, a cozy mystery series. The characters are interesting. The storyline is intriguing, and captivating. Meghan Kelly did an excellent job bringing this story to life. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to listening to Honey, Hairballs, and Murder, the next book in the series.
When the Silver Circle is asked to take a cat whose owner is being held for murder by the police things get complicated. The murder suspect sent over a crystal tray with the cat. They discover a hidden compartment containing articles stating that the tray enables cats to talk. Trying to figure out what is going on involves them in the murder investigation. Fun, easy read.
Anytime an author can stir your emotions with the arrogance of a cat, quirky characters, and a mystery, you have a story worth reading. These characters took hold of my imagination, immediately and didn't let go till the story was told. The plot is straightforward and easily followed, and the premise started out finding out why and how an old man was killed. The answers exploded soon afterward. I highly recommend this book.
This first murder is all about Belladona's owner and how the gang end up with a silver platter that let's the cats talk and also how Evie and her daughter, along with a group of volunteers in the house she set up as a cat rescue come to get the cat and the magic platter, then solve a murder and end up with the cat, the platter and a bigger house for the cat rescue to live in. It's a lovely easy story to sit and relax with.
I enjoyed this cozy murder mystery. The story is interesting and my attention was easily kept. The characters are plentiful and entertaining. The author does a good job bringing them to life.
I did listen to this on audio. Meghan Kelly did the narration. She is spectacular! I love listening to all the different voices she come up with and how they fit each personality perfectly.
I really enjoy listening to Meghan Kelly's narration. Her voice is soothing and entertaining. She knows how to deliver quality audiobooks which keep me gripped from page one til the end. This book was a combination of supernatural and murder mystery with a feline being the prime witness to many secrets. The characters are wonderful and the storyline unique.
Very pleased with this series so far! The first book was interesting and had a wonderful story line. I loved the characters. Especially Belladonna, the cat. Sure looks like Ellie and Belladonna are bonding. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of this series! So far, I love it!!
