Humans and Werewolves do not mix. I tried that once and all I have to show for it is a broken heart. No thanks.
When I have to pretend that Daphne is my mate in order to find the mystical artifact threatening my clan, I know it’s going to end badly. But I’ll do anything to save my family, so I decide to act like the cheerful bookworm with the body of a goddess doesn’t affect me in the least.
Which was a big fat lie even before I discovered the one thing that would make all of this ten times more complicated. You see Daphne is my true mate.
Now every day that I spend with her is a special kind of torture. Her very touch makes my body burn with desires I’d buried a long time ago. I need to claim Daphne, to make her mine.
But I can’t, I won’t. She may accept that I’m a Werewolf, but Daphne doesn’t know the dark beast that lurks under my skin. If she did, she’d run screaming.
So I’m going to keep my distance, for both our sakes. And when the mission is done, I’m setting her free. Even if I have to tear my heart out to do it.
Warning: Feral is a steamy standalone monster romance in the Monsters & Artifacts series. It has a grumpy Scottish Werewolf, a sunny bookworm, primal chases, outdoor ‘fun’, size difference and enough fake relationship angst to keep you up all night. CW include body image issues, biting.
Trish Heinrich’s steamy romance is fueled by caffeine and panic. When not daydreaming about the new book boyfriend she’s creating, Trish is geeking out with her two kids about superheroes, cuddling with her husband or bingeing Lucifer…again. Devil’s Temptation is her first straight up romance and is the first book in her Celestial Superheroes Series. She writes Urban Fantasy under T.L. Heinrich because there are just too many stories in her brain for one pen name. You can catch her on Instagram under @trishheinrich, or on Patreon as Trish Heinrich. She doesn’t promise to post every day, but she does promise weird, geeky fun with the occasion man chest thrown in for good measure.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed in this story. I almost DNF'd this book because the beginning was so wordy and cumbersome, and I just could not focus. I ended up skipping ahead about 35% and skimmed the rest as I kept waiting for the "moster romance" portion of this book to begin. For me, it just took too long to get there with too much back-and-forth between Fraser and Daphne. Overall, it was meh.
I loved that this book had magical artifacts as well as monsters that worked as artifact collectors for all things magic. Daphne is a scholar who works in the section of artifacts that deal with all things, sex and sexual. She definitely has that shy library in thing going on while also being confident in the work that she does, and feels no shame in talking about sexuality in public and that puts a blush on our sweet werewolf.
Fraser is such a grumpy cinnamon roll, he tries so hard to resist the pull Daphne has on him. Omgah his poor broken soul. His past relationship really did a number on him🥲. I just love him so much
It has warehouse 13 vibes and I loved that show 🤩!! So excited to submerge myself into this world again with the next book in the series!
Where is my sexy human book nerd? Where is my giant scottish werewolf? I am really into this fated mate shit. Fantastic love story with the right amount of tension and spice 🤤🔥
“Oh, Daphne,” his growling burr rumbled. “Do ya know what happens to beautiful women who play with big bad wolves?” “No,” I breathed. The grin he gave me was feral, hungry. “They get devoured.”
Hard to get into. The book starts with a nine-page glossary of supernatural creatures and then a 12-page prologue that is not about the MCs, but about the new director of the in-universe supernatural organization and her guy troubles 🙄 Then the MMC gets his first chapter and spends a couple pages on backstory of how glamours were invented, then his family troubles, girl troubles, etc., while he’s waiting for a meeting to start. These are not the kind of thoughts that you realistically have when you’re just sitting by yourself—it reeks of infodumping. Amateur hour.
Speaking of amateur, the writer has recurring issues correctly using past tense, e.g.:
“We took pride in our places of refuge, especially since throughout history, our kind has been hunted so brutally.”
“The few times he’s invited me out for wine tasting or the opening of a new restaurant, it has been quite the experience. I don’t think I’ll ever drink a merlot again without wondering if Nigel would be able to pick out whether or not there had been basil growing nearby or if there had been a light frost that year.”
There were many other editing goofs. Lots of homophone errors like illicit/elicit, rein/reign, sooth/soothe, breath/breathe. Tendency to split up compound words that aren’t usually split up, e.g. “standoffish” is spelled “stand offish”, “overextended” is spelled “over extended”, “granddaughter” is spelled “grand daughter” and so on.
The MMC’s character arc did not really work for me. I didn’t like his reasoning for not telling the FMC that she was his fated mate, which basically amounts to, “my ex was mundane and I scared her off, no way any other mundane woman will ever want me,” a little bit of communication goes a long way in a relationship, y’know! She literally kept doing and saying all the right things to show that she was not afraid of him, but he just couldn’t get out of his own way long enough to even try. And isn’t that just what a girl *loves* to hear? “My ex made me sad so now I don’t want you even though you’re literally perfect for me.”
They go from that whole mess to dropping the L-word in the space of 24 hours, which is pretty hard to take seriously. The “fake relationship” angle is almost nonexistent, since they both want each other from the jump and immediately everyone in their lives is 1000% shipping it. Even those who know it’s supposed to be fake, lol.
My favorite part of the book was FMC nerding out over historical artifacts, and what I REALLY wanted was for her knowledge to come in handy in a pinch, but they basically just gave her a stun gun and magic boxing gloves so she could beat up the bad guys in defense of her mate. We live in a strange new age of feminism, where plus-sized and skinny women alike can have their very own seven-foot-tall muscle-bound Scottish werewolf to love them, but god forbid she not learn how to use a weapon over the course of the book—that’d be unforgivable. The MMC’s ex’s worst crime in fact, was desperately throwing wine bottles and picnic supplies at her blood-drenched werewolf boyfriend instead of just whipping out her Glock.
What else? Hmm, the spicy scenes were… competent, and the dialogue was fine. I don’t think I’m interested in reading more by this author at this time.
DNF'd almost immediately. The Glossary of monsters alone was pure "tell" rather than letting the world-building naturally develop within the plot. Felt lazy and contained information that seemed strange. As a guide for non-humans, it sure reveals a lot of sensitive information about monsters rather than cautioning them to be respectful. Idk maybe that was just me. Couldn't get beyond the first chapter. Clunky writing that made me think the rest was going to be a slog to get through.
There were many things I loved about the book, but my favorite thing was the world building with supernaturals existing (mostly unseen) side by side with humanity. The glamours, the multiple forms for certain species, the complex relationships all just added to the enjoyment.
I did think I was going to scream before Fergus and Daphne got together just because every time they would get steamy there would be an interruption. By the 3rd or 4th time I was just waiting for a phone to ring, someone to pop up out of the blue, or some other nonsense. This was definitely a slower burn, but once they got together, the spice was excellent.
The book starts with an encyclopedia of terms anyone reading supernatural fantasy knows one way or another, written poorly and trying to sound sassy and hitting it way off the mark.
As if that wasn't offputting by itself a whole introductory chapter begins to tell you about stuff that seems pretty important but happened in the near past and ends with an addendum to go read a short novella somewhere else. Really? This is supposed to be the first book in a series and right off the bat it felt like I was diving in the middle of a series that has already begun.
Sad to say, but this beginning needs a total rework. It was a complete clusterfuck. First, don't make readers feel lost and grasping at straws to understand what is happening and second, if you want to do a novella, make it so it adds to the lore of the series but is an optional read, not a must.
I shouldn't have to go scattering to fill in the blanks. Otherwise, the result is just annoying and makes me want to continue with the next book on my endless TBR list.
I adored this book had me up till 3am cause I just couldn’t stop reading I had to know all the things!
Daphne is literally my soul sister and Fraser is just 😏👌 The tension the story line everything about it this book was amazing. Daphne works for a secret magical artefact collector and works with all sorts of magical creatures she goes under cover and is fake mated to a warewolf to try and recover a magical device causing havoc!
This book has all the things I LOVE - found family - fated mates - plus size FMC - knotting - breeding - grumpy x sunshine - he falls first
Its definitely one to try if your just testing the waters of monster romance
The spice was absolutely amazing, the characters were so sweet and I was obsessed with all of them, the plot was fun and had a little mystery to it, the world building was super interesting with all the different supernatural creatures and the romance between the two MCs was so sweet - I was so invested in them becoming a thing.
I ate this shit up. Did not want to put it down. This is like peak grumpy sunshine and I loved every grumble and huff that Fraser served.
Feral by Trish Heinrich feels like about everything you want out of a Hot Werewolf Summer book. We get knotting, chasing, primal urges, full moon fits, and even bonus hot Scotsmen. We even have openings for more, adventurous stories in this world.
Upfront, I admit I selfishly love a soft and larger heroine. I rate stories highly even with heroines that look nothing like me, but a gal likes to indulge in the middle of her indulgences sometimes.
I also enjoyed landing into the story with things already happening. We’re working with a world with a lot of tension And drama in the background. I got excited right away.
This was also a nice grumpy/sunshine slow burn that doesn’t lean on the miscommunication trope to flesh out their tension. Instead, Heinrich makes their mental baggage their own blockers. However, that tension get some nice relief without losing any drama because of the artifact at large.
Let’s jump into what I would like to see more of. I’m assuming this will turn into a series after all! There’s the major artifact found at the top of the story that comes to the agency. The Director needs some love! There’s the other werewolf brothers. There’s the gargoyle agent. The list goes on.
I admit wish we had gotten more artifact lore. I eat that stuff up. The artifact in focus is obviously bad. The heroine freaks out and you later get to experience how bad this thing gets. So, we do get that. It isn’t like the artifacts are afterthought. I just think that is an area I think Heinrich can indulge in way more. Build that cool lore! Makes this like a sexy, monster-y Indiana Jones series! Even Indy has that monologue moment where he’s like “Let me hype up this thing’s awesome power and history before we grab it from the bad guys” I SO wanted Daphne to have that moment.
Hi. Where do I apply to be part of the Secret Archive? Like honestly.
This book hinted and tantalized at everything I love in monster romances. Gargoyles, secret artifacts, werewolves, the whole experience. And I loved it!
This was definitely a slow burn, but it was so hot it was worth it! I loved how the author built up the chemistry between Fraser and Daphne. It wasn't rushed, it felt natural and built upon. Fraser may have been a literal monster but he sure didn't act like one. He was so in tune and responsive to her feelings and needs, I loved it!
And don't be off put because the heat once it hit full force was there, tail wagging included. They synced so well together, both feeding the fire that took over and had me needing a cold glass of water.
The plot was superb. It grabbed you, kept you hostage to the whole storyline and while it moved fast, it kept you completely involved. You're left waiting for the next book, the continuation of the series.
And to wrap it all off... Fraser wasn't a typical alpha MC, he had fears and demons that haunted him and he actually dealt with it! He didn't use it as a shield, he didn't resort to a bad third act breakup, he dealt with it. Ya'll. 10 points to Fraser.
I recieved an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was sent an arc to review! All opinions are my own.
This one was super interesting! I loved the storyline revolving around special artifacts from history that now have supernatural vibes.
I definitely haven’t read anything like it before. It’s a slow burn but once they fuck the rest of the story moves almost too fast.
Lol I’m pretty sure the first sex scene was longer than the save the day scene. I’m not complaining tho😂
Last thing is I wish the epilogue was farther in the future so we could see more of Daphne’s and Fraiser’s future, I’m a sucker for family scene epilogues.
Trish is one of those Authors that can suck you right into the story and make you feel like you’re living it in real life. Once again I’m blown away by another one of her Master Pieces. Who doesn’t love a sexy Scottish man? Daphne is amazing, and boy the first sex scene 😅 I had to finish that while not in public because my usual there’s a sex scene face was not in place for that one. I will absolutely be rereading this because I want to transport back into this world!!!
I was given this book as an ARC for my review. This review is my own
Pros: I liked the Scottish dialogue I liked Reggie and the ghost (not in the story for long) The romance was quite nice
Cons: The climax/battle scene thing was too easy? It was just really short and I was expecting a bit more I dislike the word "cunny" At one point when they were kissing I believe she called him a Beast (he was furry) in her head and that gave me an ick
Solving the mystery was NOT a focal point imo, so if that's what grabbed you tis may not be the book for you. The plot otherwise was enough for me. I just really wish the climax was more climactic
I am interested in the continuation of the artifact adventure however, and I would absolutely love it if maybe reggie and the ghost had a story/one shot sumn sumn later on.
I stayed up all night reading this knowing I have to work in the morning because I couldn’t even think about anything but consuming this book, story, characters, plot.
Man that was good! I loved it! I wish it was longer but I’m just greedy! I love Daphne she is a strong FMC whose smart and stubborn (the best kind right!) Fraser is SCOTTISH (yummy! Yes please!!) and a werewolf so this definitely hits my monster f**cker spot! I loved the story line that Trish gives us mixing well with those mouth watering and jaw dropping scenes!
Fraser and Daphne were fire! This book was hot, and I honestly had to look up a couple of things mentioned. (I'm ashamed to say that I had no idea what knotting was.) Five filthy stars for Trish Heinrich educating me. Outside of the steam, the book has good pacing and a phenomenal story. This isn't JUST steam...it's a lot of fun to read.
Feels like a fanfic in the good way. Oh no! They have to be fake mates in order to get her in his family’s land? Oh no that means he has to give her a real mating bite that drives their instincts wild but each one is pining for the other and he’s afraid she won’t accept his wolf side but honestly she likes him more as a were than glimmered as a man. ✨The mutual pining.✨
I have loved a lot of this author’s work but really didn’t like this one. I think it’s probably because I’m Scottish that I hated how she represented Scottish people and did next to no research. Bit weird. And no we don’t say cunny here. Grim. Overall good spice tho
Indiana Jones vibes with sexy monsters and magic artifacts? Yes, please! There was so much delicious pining in this book that by the time the MCs got together, I was feral myself (in a good way!) xD They were a great fit, both strong and duty-driven, and how they grew to love each other was beautiful. The plot kept me entertained, and the spice had me blushing under my reading blanket. Loved it!
This book is so appropriately named! I felt like I was going feral reading it!
Feral follows the Silver City Celestials series by Trish Heinrich. (If you have not read those yet I highly recommend you sprint to buy them and devour them like I did. They are truly amazing!!) While you see a few familiar faces you get to meet the gorgeous, curvy Daphne, and the smoking hot, grumpy werewolf Fraser MacDonald (did I mention he's Scottish and you can practically hear his accent as you read?!)
Daphne is an agent of the Secret Archive going on her first field mission with the werewolf liaison Fraser to find an artifact that is potentially reeking havoc on Fraser's family and pack.
This slow burn kept me glued to the pages and left me craving more werewolves and some gargoyles too! I cannot wait for the next book in the series and will definitely be rereading this book and the series before again and again!
Loved it. A different visual of the monster in my mind but really enjoyed it. A great story and the romantic scenes were done nicely. Heck, can not wait for the next chapter. Highly recommended
What a hot read - so much spice. Daphne and Frazer are so steamy. It takes them a while for them to get together but when they do sparks fly. Besides the spice there is some very good characterisation and story to set the scene, not just for this book but for future books in the series. This is a very good read.
This was a quick and easy read that I picked up for free on a Stuff Your Kindle day. The story wasn’t my absolute favorite, but did keep me entertained and invested. You could tell that it likely was part of a connected series — which at the start was a bit confusing because I thought this was the first in the series; but the Secret Archive where Daphne works recently went through an upheaval where the old director was using the artifacts collected by the company for nefarious reasons which ended up enslaving supernaturals and killing others. Leading to the supernatural world still distrusting the Secret Archive, and a faction of supernaturals splitting from it to create the “Protectors” trying to steal back artifacts.
Daphne works in their Sexual Artifacts department and has been pretty much cast aside by her family as they’re all professors and see her as not successful. I thought Daphne having more of a backstory would have helped out here as you get just one short scene with her uncle and her saying she never felt close to her family — nothing about why she left the states and moved to London, nothing about where she’s from, etc.
Fraser is a werewolf whose clan is experiencing an artifact problem. His older brother, the clan alpha, is against asking the Secret Archive for help due to their history together (again, only mentioned folks died, no real details though) but Fraser still decides to reach out to them and is introduced to Daphne who goes undercover as his mate to try and find the rogue missing artifact and keep it out of the Protectors hands. The fact that Daphne clearly is just a scholar and not a field worker yet is immediately put on this case felt a bit odd. You also got the immediate insta-love storyline as Fraser sees Daphne and realizes she’s his true mate — so faking the mate bite and relationship with her becomes this torture for him when he thinks he’ll have to give her up at the end of their mission.
This one ended up being a bit predictable; they figured out who the bad guy was from the get-go as he was the first suspect, and the mole within the Secret Archive is another clearly obvious character. I did like that this also used Scotland as the setting (in this world were’s are originally from Scotland and were Druid warriors who loved the land so much they were created as protectors of it) but thought the setting descriptions and even Frasers “brogue” felt forced and not natural. The overall world and backstory for both characters could have been done better to make me really love this story, and the insta-love storyline is never a favorite. This gets 3 stars from me for still being entertaining and enjoyable ⭐️⭐️⭐️
