This book doesn't have a lot of useful things for me, because it's centered on business relationships. Though, if you have 0 social skills, it could help you take that first step in your social life.
This was such a great tool for understanding conversations, I had to read it twice! Each chapter talks about practical ways to engage with strangers, friends, work colleagues, etc. It was so helpful to learn some tools that work for the author and I have already been applying them in my own life. The chapters will short and concise. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to communicate better.
I expected more. Style of writing was much better than in first two popular psychology (communication) books I've read these days (How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less and Goodbye to Shy: 85 Shybusters That Work) but still haven't learned that much "new" information. Most of it is just recycling all that general know knowledge (smile, greet, ask questions, listen, show interest...)
There is a summary of useful questions you can ask people, in the end of the book (in 3 or 4 pages) and there are a few good examples where can this work, in real life situations. So, you can skim through the Book and read the summary, and you're good to go, practice, people! ;)
I thought this was a good read. One of my biggest struggles has been getting out of the house and meeting new people. I realize now how important it is to be interdependent of others. It's the only way I can achieve my goals and dreams and it's the only way I can help others do the same.
This book is full of basics, which may seem like no brainers to some, but for me learning how to strike up a conversation and what types of questions to ask to keep it going really helps. Learning how to ask the right questions is vital.
I thought this was a good book to get people starting to talk to others. It has all the topics you can think of... Bringing up topics in a conversation, how to meet people, and even how to exit the conversation. It's also nice to know that the author started out not being able to talk to people and she was able to change and now she's written a book and holds classes and helps others learn what she has learned.
This book kicked off my love of reading, starting just a few years ago. (I can't believe I forgot about it.) My brother lent this book to me as we both recognized this was a key area in which I needed improvement. Debra has a way of making other people feel less intimidating and really encourages you to take the initiative. She gives practical examples and easy steps to start off in the right direction.
It took a lot till I read this...I don't know why, but this book didn't capture my attention...I think the major fact for not liking it, was because it is a book for meeting new people in business. Perhaps others will like it more than me...
