I enjoyed this debut from E. L. Li. This book throws you in to the plot and directly into action. It highlights a choral cast but for me my personal favorite was Skye. I truly enjoyed her engagement with Shadow and Zephyr and found myself smiling along at certain times. The author mentions drawing influence from MCU and Avatar the Last Airbender and it shows! I loved the throw-away mention of the watermelon stand ("my cabbages!" ATLA) and at times the narrative read as a video game, with characters constantly "leveling up" after each battle. This book is for anyone who is a fan of multiple POVs and action packed DragonBall Z -level epic battles.
“Expect the unexpected,” -“And give it all we got!”
Woah this story was intense. I will start this off by saying I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
THE. AMOUNT. OF. CHARACTERS. WE. ARE. BLESSED. WITH. Holy cow you grow attached to so many of them and E L Li is not afraid to build you up and shatter you in the process. This was woven so beautifully, so intensely that I’m still reeling from the beginning let alone the rest. We are continuously kept on our toes. This is NON STOP action. If you are looking for almost nothing but action this is right up your alley. Of course there’s amazing plot in the background but that is taking a backseat to the amazing action and fight scenes, I have never seen so much action in a book before and it was a nice change. That last epic freaking fight scene was *chefs kiss*.
Skye and Shadow give me life. You feel for Skye and her struggles deeply throughout this novel. She’s a badass breath of fresh air compared to most heroines we get nowadays.
“Skye summoned the glow in her eyes. Golden light shrouded her, and she soaked in the power it granted her, aided by the stars.”
Shadow (her brother) is probably one of my favorite characters. He is so blind to things around him that I can find him extremely relatable. He’s strong willed and always trying to prove himself and better himself. Honestly he probably is my favorite character.
“What romance?” asked Shadow. “It’s like the time Zeph carried ME! Huh… Funny how that works. Zeph carrying both Hikari twins at one point!” Everyone else facepalmed.” even I facepalmed!!!
Zephyr is adorable. Of course him and Skye are even more adorable. Or should I say “Zephkye”. They gravitate towards each other while also dancing around each other that you can’t help but want to just hop in and knock their heads together sometimes. I absolutely loved Zephyrs drive and growth into his leadership role he is taking. There were times he doubted himself but he never gave up and I admire that.
“He would do anything to carry her to safety, no matter how weakened he became” my heart
My honorable mention here is Glaceius because he’s the best and I loved the little gossiper he is. We both like the tea!! Plus he had me laughing about more than anyone else.
“WAH WAH WAH! SOMEBODY CALLED THE WAMBULANCE!”
There are countless of other characters. We follow almost a dozen it feels like. And you can’t help but grow attached to every single one. You will definitely laugh, you will cry, you will yell at your kindle/ book like I did but you will find yourself deeply drawn into this amazing world E L Li created and not regret a moment. I genuinely felt I was in an action role playing game or even would compare this to the likes of Sword Art Online with its gaming feel to it.
I give this book a high 4 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ an amazing novel by the equally amazing E L Li.
Such an amazing read! The world building is fantastic and there are so many characters to fall in love with, each with a wonderful story and we'll thought out personality. I love Skye and am most certainly a simp for her and Zeph. I reeeeally love Shadow as well.
Honestly I wasn't sure going into the story how I'd feel, but dannng am I glad to have continued!
E.L. Li is a fantastic fantasy writer and I am beyond grateful for the amazing chance to have read her story early!
Anyone who’s rated this more than two stars is lying and doesn’t have the balls to say the truth. This book read like a first draft without the author rereading it at least a second time. I assume this is self-published? Either that or you should fire your editor because that wasn’t a good job. Get rid of the info-dumping and half of the cast. Avoid cringe dialogue, names, and descriptions. Stop using an exclamation mark every other sentence. People usually don’t constantly yell at each other! Not everyone’s parents have to have a significant role in the story. Never ever write your MMC thinking about the FMC’s “soft curves.” It just sounds gross, I’m sorry. The story has so much potential and with enough patience and constant editing I bet this could be such an amazing fantasy universe!! Give the characters defined roles and purpose. Don’t switch POVs if it’s unnecessary. Don’t explain everything in detail. Most readers make the connection but are overwhelmed by too much world building. At least I was. As I said, this story has so much potential, so keep at it and keep writing!!!!
[4.5 stars] I was an ARC reader for this book!! This was my first time doing it but it was incredible. Thank you so much E.L.Li <3
This was a captivating story. There were so many references/similar sentences to other books and shows I love, like Percy Jackson, Marvel, and many others. Also the action scenes were SO well written and creative, they amazed me every. single. time.
There were so many characters and teams. They were all well developed and their stories were great. I got so attached to the main characters and the romances between them, and just the fact that they were childhood besties <33 My fav was Zephyr. I also liked how they are informal when talking to each other.
One little thing I didn’t love: this is common among fantasy books, but the amount of names and information about the teams and the people got me confused sometimes and it was hard to follow what was happening.
Still though, defined worth it. Really recommend :)
Realm of Hope gave me non-stop D&D, manga, RPG video games vibes and I'm loving it. Actually, my mind visuals for this book was a total anime (and it would totally work as one!). There's a diverse cast of character, which I personally super enjoy. Its fun, creative + packed with cool name references. The world building is huge and the amount of detail is vast and thought through. The characters are diverse, and yes, the women are just as badass as the men.
I would definitely recommend this YA fantasy to anyone who loves action, character development and yes...ANIME!
*I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review :)
DNF at 10%. Omg legit I’m so disappointed you guys. I really honestly tried. Tik tok said this book gave RPG/Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy vibes—and it DOES…but oof the writing I just….I can’t yo. When I read the word “facepalmed” I literally looked up and went….oh god no. It feels like I’m reading amateur fan fiction. The grammar and sentence structures are just nah. I would rather watch this than like read it tbh. If someone can give me recs on something similar but with better writing I’d love to have it. BRB as I start on my amazon return :(((
This book was fast paced, even for being so long. The characters were amazing and the action scenes weren’t your typical ones, which made it really fun to read. Zephyr was my favorite character and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next books
“This book is a total love letter to gamers and fans of epic fantasy. It gave me the same vibes as playing Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, and Baldur’s Gate, with that perfect mix of adventure, amazing characters, and intense battles. The world-building and emotional depth are spot-on—it feels like the author took everything I love about those games and turned it into a book. It’s a true masterpiece, and if you’re into fantasy with that nostalgic RPG feel, you’re going to love it.”
If you’re a huge fan of Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and Fire Emblem, hold on tight, because this read is definitely for you!
Divided into three parts, it follows the points of views of four of the many characters in the story, Zephyr, Skye, her twin brother Shadow, and Luna. Within these perspectives is a complex story full of likeable characters and magical and fast-paced action scenes!
The world of this story definitely reminded me a lot of Kingdom Hearts, as there are multiple! Though only one of the worlds is featured in this book, there’s a lot to it! Many different cities, terrain, and climates, flesh the setting out a ton, and it was one of my favorite parts of the book. The magic system was also very nostalgic, as it contains some of the features of JRPG games, such as class types, magic types, unlockable skills, and upgradeable equipment.
Just as likeable are the many, many characters of Realm of Hope. Zephyr was my personal favorite as I found him most relatable, but the other main characters are just as fleshed out as he is, each with their unique strengths, weaknesses, and stories.
Though I enjoyed reading this book overall, I couldn’t help but feel it lulled after a while. There are a ton of characters in this book, and it was difficult to connect with many. I personally felt confused by plot points at times as well as sequence of events that occurred, and things were unclear to me at times when I felt I should’ve been aware or able to piece together what had happened leading up to these points.
Still, I found the story very enjoyable because of the nostalgia it made me feel, reminding me of my favorite video games. It was an action-packed story full of character growth, and I wish I could play this as a video game.
So, Realm of Hope rating:
3.5/5 and recommend if you ae a HUGE fan of games and shows like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Avatar the Last Airbender. This book is a great amalgamation of elements from all of those and more!
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review so first off, thank you E. L. Li!
I really struggled to find anything wrong with this book. There was so much action and adventure and such strong female leads. I loved how strong Skye was and how herself Spark was and how brutally honest Luna was. It was lovely reading strong women with these qualities that are usually given to men. The prologue immediately hits you with a mystery and it just keeps getting better after that. There is LGBTQ+ representation and I wish there was slightly more of it but the book wasn't about romance so I can't knock any points there and I think that with the next installment of Realm of Hope's trilogy we may see more romance between the LGBTQ+ characters.
Each character had a very defined personality so it will be interesting to see their development and growth as the series continues but I really loved Shadow's growth in this book the most and I loved his chapters the most.
Chapter 34 was ridiculously sweet and broke my heart a little. I never get emotional about books or characters but chapter 34 nearly broke me. Nearly.
So I just finished it. And I wanted to like it. I liked the world concept but that is kind of it.
My main ideas of it. I'm just going to dump my thoughts in some unstructured way.
So one thing I love about fantasy books with magic systems is having one that is consistent and makes sense and if they explain rules then they stick to the rules. This world kinda had magic that wasn't fully explained. It just kinda existed accept it. I do understand the concept they're learning it but it felt too convenient.
The characters felt very lifeless, at no point did I feel myself engaged with the characters and rooting for them, they were just bodies to carry the plot they didn't seem to have any depth or growth to them that wasn't forced down your throat where was the nuance. I think the only exception was Skye but even that was questionable.
Now the above might be a symptom of this but there was way too many characters and places for me to pay attention especially given to you so fast that you don't ever get time to digest one before the next. The places names and locations would come at you so fast that you had no idea of the scope of things.
The story never respected me in how it was told to me. It very much never let me have time to figure stuff out it just clubbed me in the head with exposition for some things and told to deal with it.
The scope and timeline felt confusing. Because of the fact that they were often teleporting from one location that I didn't feel attached to. To another I felt like places could be next to each other and I'd have no idea. I was not sure how much time things took so the scale seemed off and I couldn't figure out how big or vast the different cities or world's were.
Fictional positioning In fights. I felt that fights were kinda just person A hitting Risen B, without anything more than they hit each other with overly complicated attack. Without knowing where they are and the dynamics of the fight the moves matter little. There was no rhythm or flow to the fights. This made it hard to follow and keep track of what everyone is doing or fighting.
The pacing of how things happened. I would sometimes feel like things would just happen for no reason other than the plot wanted it to. Stuff like Zephyr getting his mark. it just happened.
Way too much going on. Never gave me breathing room to digest what was currently happening. Now could argue oh this is on purpose as the characters feel that way. If this is the case it could have been told better. But yeah at no point did I feel like I could get time to get to know stuff. It felt more like a fanfiction written about a world we've already known and read about. Instead of being the first book in a series.
Now the reason I left this long review is not because I hate it. In fact it's the opposite, this looks like an author who has some awesome inspiration and ideas and I want them to take the time and step back a little and slow down. I know they're excited to tell the story but slow down and ease me into this.
Good luck for future books looking forward to seeing the growth.

I had to DNF this book. I really wanted to like it cuz it sounded interesting and was compared to Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts with the rpg style storyline… but I didn’t. I hate saying bad things about books because I know that some books that people enjoy, others hate and vice versa… this book felt like such a struggle to get as far as I did. A little over a hundred pages and there was nothing pulling me in. The characters felt dry and forgettable and so did the story for me. Too many characters were introduced without actually introducing the characters and even then had nothing that really gave you a sense of attachment to them. The story was very dry without much of a flow to how things happened. I couldn’t tell where the story was going and it felt like certain things were just expected to be known without explaining anything about it. Things were just happening to happen and character interactions felt very robotic and forced. There were so many good reviews and I was so sure I’d love it. It started to be too much of a struggle to convince myself to continue reading that it put me in a reader’s slump until I actually told myself it’s okay to not finish a book sometimes so you don’t burn yourself out and beat yourself up over it.
An interesting, magical, and game style fantasy novel. I enjoyed the RPG when I was a teenager and this novel gives you that gaming and movie interaction. This is a reminder of Final Fantasy with characters that have unique abilities including magic and special weapons. Realm of Hope will engage teenagers into the supernatural and heroes with legendary weapons. Skye and her team of super-powered teenagers have been looking forward to become heroes that are part of Star Strike. I find Zephyr and Shadow to be interesting. All the characters are unique which blends well together. I really like superhero stories like Marvel. I highly recommend this book. It also ends with a to be continued so you can expect for more. E.L. lets you know that there are more books. You need to make time to read through this book to fully enjoy it. It is not ideal for people who are busy and need more time to read, but may not be able to read that quickly. I enjoyed it, but felt it was a bit too long.
What an exhilarating science-fantasy adventure! It comes with magic, supernatural powers, and a diverse cast of heroes. Set in a world where ancient bloodlines wield incredible abilities, Realm of Hope follows Skye and her team of super-powered teenagers as they aspire to join Star Strike, an elite group of heroes.
The book’s dynamic characters, including the intriguing Zephyr and Shadow, bring a rich and engaging blend of personalities and powers, much like a Final Fantasy-style adventure.
With its fast-paced action, legendary weapons, and high-stakes battles, this novel is sure to captivate teenage readers who love supernatural elements and superhero stories.
However, its detailed world-building and length will require dedicated reading time. The story concludes with a “to be continued,” promising more exciting installments ahead.
If you enjoy immersive fantasy with strong RPG and cinematic influences, Realm of Hope is a thrilling read worth diving into.
Okay look…I’ve never particularly struggled with a book before, but I did with this one. I’m sorry, but I sincerely feel this book had no editor. I had to stop a lot to reread a single sentence, then question if I knew what it meant. It DID have its moments. The fights were written pretty well, and the idea of it is unique. Some moments were just funny. I only really cared about maybe four characters, the rest I’d forget relations or entirely. I see so much potential, sincerely I do. I WILL read the second book, but maybe give it a couple read-throughs for grammar and sentence structure. Oh, and more enemy descriptions. I appreciate the world building, but I don’t necessarily need to know how a room is if we’re only there for a chapter.
Let me start with "somebody called the wambulance!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The story is simply PACKED with action! The whole time I was thinking okay, deep breaths, it will calm down. NOPE! 🤣 Definitely kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. It was also full of world building, which usually doesn't interest me. And I was definitely lost most of the time with the amount of characters, but it didn't take away from enjoying the story.
It kind of reminded me of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Which also reminded me that I need to rewatch that again. It's been a while 😅
Also, shout out and a big thank you to the author for sending me this book when I only signed up for the ARC of the second book. THANK YOU! ❤️
The Realm of Hope is a well presented, rich and diverse fantasy world. The story follows superpowered teenagers as they deal with overwhelming fame, all whilst trying to juggle normal teenage relationships and save the world. Skye's struggle to live up to the weight of expectation was particularly well drawn.
The characters genuinely feel like teenagers and had a lot of teenage banter which added some much needed comic relief. The action scenes were fast paced and flowed well and there were a lot of different monsters and problems to keep you engaged throughout.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I first came across Realm of Hope on Instagram. This book is perfect for gamers and fantasy readers. Every chapter feels like leveling up in a game, with intense battles, complex strategies, and evolving character dynamics. The worldbuilding and magic system are deep and intricate, so it takes a bit to get into, but once you do, it’s absolutely worth it.
Skye and Shadow are easily two of the best MCs I’ve read. Their personal struggles hit hard, and their growth throughout the story kept me hooked the whole way through. If you’re into immersive fantasy with gripping characters and a plot that makes you think, Realm of Hope is an absolute must-read!
I’m not going to give this book a rating, because I don’t think it’d be fair.
I read through the entire book and, to be honest, I think the book struggled with technical execution. There are places that I thought needed improvement, and I could talk about them, but that’s not the point.
Because what this books does well is that it makes it reads like the author really cares about their subject and they were excited about telling the story.
To keep this review brief, I will say that the book could use more editing. This one wasn’t for me, but I hope the author keeps writing, and I would like to see where their next project takes them.
I'm not someone who DNF's very often but I got about halfway through and took multiple month long breaks before I finally gave up. I like books with multiple narrators but this one has way too many so you don't get enough time with any of them to really get to know them. They all just feel generic. There are also a lot of problems with the grammar and sometimes it's so bad I have to read the whole paragraph 3 or 4 times and then rearrange the words of a sentence to figure out what it was supposed to say.
I always love books that take inspiration from video games especially of those from the RPG genre. The story reads exactly how I would imagine if I were to put an RPG game into a book. The fantasy world as well as the rich cast of characters really helped me keep engaged with the story, which I found intriguing and fascinating.
I also appreciate the trigger warnings at the beginning, it's not something that would've affected me personally but I know some people who would be grateful for that warning. It's a small thing but it's really helpful to those who want to feel safe while reading.
I stumbled upon this gem on TikTok and snapped it up right away when I heard it was inspired by Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy! The magic, weapons, and battles totally give off Kingdom Hearts vibes.
The characters have these wild powers and bloodlines and it's so cool seeing how each character is so unique. Shadow's like Sora, and Zeph has that Riku energy. Skye is hands down my fave; she's like Roxas who is my fave character from KH, and her story had me in tears.
Watching the characters grow and level up with each mission was awesome—I couldn't put it down! This book absolutely needs to become a game.
The author merits commendation for creating a book that spans over 500 pages. This work is a blend of intricate world-building, action sequences, creativity, and imagination.
Two minor suggestions if I may: (1) From time to time, long narratives slow the pacing. The author could enhance the story's momentum by shortening some of the lengthy descriptions. (2) The frequent use of dialogue tags (e.g., "said") was somewhat distracting.
From the first chapter I was drawn into this story and the world. The characters are inspired by video games and anime. This is a story about friendship and overcoming demons while fighting for a better world.
The writing is excellent along with the worldbuilding and storytelling. There is plenty of humor, romance, and fun moments spread throughout. Worth a read and I am eagerly waiting for the next book.
This is a great pick for young adults or adults who like fantasy with action, emotion and strong sense of hope. This book has it all balance. It also manage to build a really interesting world. It’s the kind of book that leaves you eagerly awaiting the next chapter.
I felt immediately captivated by twins, Shadow and Skye as they began their “testing” as young children. This story never slowed down with adventure at every turn.
I found the sheer number of characters to be a little hard to keep track of, but the book is very engaging. Recommended,
