Commodore Jack Romanoff and his crew won the battle for New Copenhagen but lost their quantum drive in the fight. Now they must free the human prisoners and strengthen their defenses before the Locusts trap them.
If it’s not already too late.
Only the alien hyperdrive they recovered offers a chance to get a new quantum drive and more missiles before time runs out. To master it and solve the mystery of the invasion, they must open a dialog with the aliens and get their willing cooperation. Somehow.
There are aspects of these books that I like, but I can still find them a bit frustrating to read at times. Early in this book somebody says; “Has anyone ever told you that you’ve got a bad habit of staggering from crisis to crisis, Navy?” This sums up the way the author writes these books, they lurch from one disaster to another. I suppose this might make an interesting story, but personally I find this means I just end up waiting for the next calamity.
THE ENEMY REVEALED is the fourth book of THE LAST HUNTER series by JN Chaney and Terry Mixon. The aliens are revealed and we discover a bunch about their biology, culture, and their own enemies. I have more enjoyed the conflict against our protagonist's fellow humans. However, the development here is well-written and I like seeing how new characters deal with the revelations. Also, I love symbiote stories and as a fan of the Trill and Gould both, I think this is a great set of twists and turns--and I'm anxious to see how it ends up.
If the main plot is still interesting and continues to develop regularly, the narrative implementation is particularly annoying. Each chapter is constructed in a very academic way, with a small preparatory meeting between two or three characters, this meeting presenting what will happen in the rest of the chapter. There's absolutely no point, the books could be twice as short and twice as good if these unnecessary lines were removed. The characters are all very bland, apart from that of Lisa who takes on substance in this part.
Well, this book is beginning to read like most of my other military sci-fi books in that we now have an enemy to focus on. Instead of mindless drones that the Confederation fought against in the last war, we now know there is an alien race behind them. We're also soon going to find out not only who they are, but why they are attacking the Confederation planets.
These revelations don't come easy. Commodore Jack Romanoff and his huge Confederation starship the Delta Orionis (a.k.a. Hunter) is orbiting above the planet New Copenhagen attempting to make major repairs and clear the planet of the Locust incursion. In the past war, some two-hundred years ago, the Locust didn't send down troops to the planets surface. In fact, all the past Confederation saw were millions of deadly drone ships that swarm from Locust motherships. They practically wiped out Confederation forces in that war until a final battle that saw the Confederation victorious when the Delta Orionis was put to the task. There were twelve of this super battleships used to end that war, but they had fallen to the march of time. Most had been put in mothballs in a floating depot now called "Port Royal".
Port Royal was surprisingly occupied by an interesting group of self-governing smuggler, thieves, malcontents and well, criminals. When the Hunter showed up at Port Royal, they didn't know whether they would have to fight or be able to access the facilities and make repairs needed to get the Hunter back into the fight. Fortunately, the latter happened and the Hunter went back out again to defend New Copenhagen. But, doing so has once again, crippled the Hunter, her direct independent quantum drive was damaged in battle and the parts to the warp gate back to Port Royal were also destroyed.
So, Commodore Romanoff finds himself unable to repair the Hunter. He can't even move his ship a great distance, but during the previous battle they were able to capture the first aliens that were behind these Locust drone attacks. These aliens were mostly humanoid in appearance, but had a very different language. Romanoff had to find a person smart enough to build some kind of language interpreter or at least program a computer to do so. He did find a person, Lisa Gane, a hacker from New Copenhagen who was a "hacker" and built a rudimentary device that allowed for limited conversations.
During one session with the original alien captives, another group was brought in but these appeared to be the military side. Unfortunately, a scuffle broke out during the interrogations and Lisa was shot as was one of the alien scientist by the name of Regex. What happened next is something you'll have to read about.
So, now we know more about who and what we're fighting. It's just that unless the Hunter gets back to Port Royal, they won't stand much of a chance in the next encounter. And that is coming soon. A new fleet of alien colony ships are soon coming and with them is a power alien military fleet. Seems like the fighting has just started.
This is a good series, but I don't know how the Confederation expects to fend off an entire alien civilization with just one ship. It's hard to believe that every other single Confederation military starship is gone. Nobody throws their entire fleet into one battle. But that's the situation we face. Hopefully we'll get some more insight into how Commodore Romanoff expects to defend New Copenhagen and the Confederation in book 5, "Command Authority" available as pre-order for 10/16/2022.
The first book in the series was pretty charming. The author promised a fun space opera book and delivered. After the third book was pretty much like the second my attention started to wander. After the fourth book promised to be just like the second and third I started to lose interest.
When I got partially through this one and the author decided to have the characters do stupid things that felt contrived to get a specific event I just quit. J.N. I can't believe any military would be stupid enough to herd combat trained captives, en mass, using guards with loaded deadly weapons.
Great start, but really needed to wrap it up faster or come up with some way to make it fresh.
I enjoyed this book, the 4th in the series as the story of an alien culture threatening the existence of the human race sometime in the future from now. The book is well paced with a logical plot. The main character and supporting cast shared this book equally and we got more of an insight to each character's inner thinking. My only critique would be that the book tended to overanalyze and over explain the situations and/or the characters actions. I still think the book is worth reading just slow at times however I am enjoyed it and look forward to the next book in the series. I think it's a good story with likable characters and so far it's kept me engaged enough to not want to always know what's going to happen next.
The title says it all. The last battleship is in bad shape and they really need a break. Jack, the Commodore need to take some risks to save his ship and humanity. There are some betrayals but also some new friends. The young but talented crew of Hunter must fight off one enemy, then another. Just an awesome story with further character development and lots of action.
From One Crisis to Another🚀💫👽 The Bad Luck Commodore🐺🔫🗡💪 I enjoy these books but the characters lurch from one crisis to another throughout. NOW there are aliens👽👽 among us! A symbiant🐛 becomes surgically paired with a human crew member to save her life and the symbiant's🐛 too.
Of course the book ends in a cliffhanger. To be continued.....with more life among the space junk💥🚀💫.
His battleship badly battered with loss of many personnel, laser turrets, and missile batteries, and virtually out of missiles, still has to face two different warrior aliens races. They’re cut off from from help, stranded in a different section of the cluster. Defeat is not an option. If any of the alien races escape, that could doom humanity. Buckle up buttercup!
One enemy revealed, but another appears before we get things sorted. Maybe I'm old school but multiple alen races in the same series gets contrived. There are also some characters, old and newer, that seem to be left behind. I was hoping for more connection to the Confederation Navy. Reading onward to get some closure.
The crew of the Hunter is hard pressed by multiple engagements both on the ground and in space. Commodore Jack Romanoff has come to rely on his neophyte crew but he is beginning to feel that they could really use a breather instead of rushing from one potential disaster to the next. The determination of his crew is inspiring but will that be enough?
Yikes! That escalated quickly. Props to TM and JC for keeping this interesting. I’d been looking forward to this episode and read it in one sitting. It was worth the wait.
Commodore Romanoff and company deliver a semi-pyrrhic victory and lay the groundwork for battles to come. The possibilities presented by the possibilities of the Tardan symbiotes are both terrifying and intriguing.
Many years in the future humanity is at war again with war like aliens. The military branch of an alien race is targeting a human run galaxy. Only one ship and crew stand between humanity and genocide. Hard to put down. Looking forward to next book in series.
I throughly enjoyed this book, the ship battle were exceptionally good, as were the ground battles. There was a fair amount of character growth and a few twists I didn't see coming, but that I really liked. Definitely worth a read.
Really enjoyed this volume. The joining of Regex and Lisa makes for a very interesting future in the next series. The future looks even more difficult now with the new aliens.
Kind of a strange new direction. I really liked the first two books in the series, but the last two books have taken a strange direction. This book was just ok. The antagonists feel like a rewrite from a discard pile. I will read the next one...but I'm not holding out much hope.
This story keeps on track book to book and maintains my interest. Pulling back the veil on the antagonist in this book went a long way to explain the reasons for the aggression. Well done!
I liked how they went into more detail about the aliens. But of course the second they had a handle on the situation the bigger aliens had to come into the picture too lol.
Stunning book, lots of action, lots of twists and turns of fortune. Just when one side looks specifics finally dealt with something else comes along even worse. I liked the shift in direction with the alien race, liked Kelly's story. Jeffrey Kafer is an excellent narrator.
Books are getting sloppy as I read this series. First book- pretty good second book fair- third book shaky - not so good. Trying to figure do I waste my time and hope 4 book is better? Not sure
Another nail biting book in the series. Really enjoyed all the tactical situations and scenarios that then team had o deal with making for a very gripping read. As usual going to tackle the next book in the series shortly. Enjoy everyone.
I've been enjoying the series quite a lot. The situation for Hunter is getting a bit ridiculous with humanity being put on the line and the ship taking crazy chances. I'm hoping to see some kind of a fleet put together in the next books.
Jack and his crew need to repair the Hunter and defend the planet of New Copenhagen from the Tardan military forces. And that’s just the beginning. A great story.
The story plot is still holding the reader’s attention. This book has more Sci-Fi military action than the previous books. Character development is excellent.
