Celebrate life in the northland with seasonal foods and cherished stories, as recipes and personal recollections transport readers to a lakeside cabin in the north woods.
Cabins provide an ideal getaway from the demands of everyday life, with adventuresome days of hiking or boating or lounging fueled by hearty, home-cooked meals. The rhythms of cabin life are familiar to Stephanie Hansen, who relishes the opportunity to create memorable and delicious meals for friends and loved ones using simple ingredients from pantry and garden.
From her family cabin on picturesque True North Island near Ely, Minnesota, Hansen shares favorite recipes for the summer months. In May, she presents cozy dishes like Beef Bourguignon and Drunken Cowboy Beans followed by a sweet and tart Rhubarb Skillet Cake, while June might call for Molasses Pork Chops accompanied by Roasted Carrots with Scallion-Ginger Sauce. For the lazy summer days of July and August, the classic Fried Walleye with Lemony Tartar Sauce might hit the spot, and a Grilled Ratatouille with Herb Vinaigrette takes advantage of fresh seasonal vegetables. As autumn starts to creep in, Grilled Lamb Burgers with Tzatziki Feta Sauce and Warm Bacon Potato Salad keep the summer vibe going. Throughout the months, Hansen shares recipes for desserts both simple and adventurous—from a No-Bake Layered Lemon Loaf with Blueberries to Molten Chocolate Cakes—and refreshing cocktails to meet your every mood.
Hansen’s creative dishes will nourish and delight those who gather at your table—at the cabin or at home. True North Cabin Cookbook offers ample opportunity to savor north woods living at its very best.

The classic case of a cookbook becoming so much more than recipes. Don’t misunderstand. The recipes are wonderful however, it’s the stories that pull you in. I found myself craving the Northwoods, nature, foraging fresh blueberries, cooking meals with local ingredients, family & friends, and appreciation in simplicity. I read a library copy but I know this book will be joining my ever burgeoning book shelves.
The “True North Cabin Cookbook” was written up in the Star Tribune this fall as one of the best cookbooks of 2022. I asked for it for Christmas as a result, but it was apparently nowhere to be found - it was even out at Amazon. However, I was in a small bookstore in Stillwater, Minnesota, recently and spotted one last copy on the shelf - I scooped it up! I brought it home and immediately started reading. And, less than 24 hours later, I’m done!
Takeaways:
1. I loved the personal anecdotes here that center around Stephanie Hansen’s experiences at her husband’s family cabin, True North. I laughed and cried the whole way through!
2. Good food and drink have been integral to Hansen’s family and friends’ cabin experience. That is made obvious here.
3. The inclusion of photos of both the cabin, the island on which it sits, the food, and individuals (and dogs) who figure into her story also help to create a personal tone here.
4. And the recipes look fabulous - fresh and healthy for the most part, and meeting the needs of meet eaters and vegetarians alike. Hansen has a garden at both True North and the cabin she and her husband eventually purchased across the lake, Hilltop! The use of ingredients from these gardens figure prominently into the recipes included here.
Loved this! Can’t wait to get started! Highly recommended!
Stephanie Hansen OMG, your cookbook is amazing. I will make everything in here. I’m not just saying that either. Starting with tomato pie, I’ve never had it. My garden is overwhelmed with tomatoes. Tomato soup, basil salt and pesto. I love this book! Congratulations!
LOVE all the recipes in this book! I have made many since picking it up and every recipe works! I have had people ask for the recipes, I have had people tell me it reminds them of what their mother made years ago. A perfect cookbook for quick and easy meals and sides!
I love cookbooks and don't really need any more. So, I checked this out of the library. Oh my gosh, the stories and pictures are lovely. I have spent time up north, but never had a cabin. This makes me want to try to spend more time up north! And the recipes look great! I love to cook, so I bought my own copy so I can work my way through the recipes.
I really liked this cookbook quite a lot. I got it at the library so I think I’ll need to add it to my wishlist. Lots of fantastic sounding recipes and beautiful pictures. Stories from the author’s life scattered throughout.
