A Bratva/ Mafia romance featuring a shy Catalina having selective mutism and three predatory antiheroes, Damien, Nikolay, and Mikhail, united in brotherhood. In a quest for retribution against Catalina’s father and an unknown figure from Damien’s past, the brotherhood decides to prey upon Catalina, until they find themselves drawn to her, protective of her, and decide to keep her instead.
In lots of respects I felt a willing captive. Who wouldn’t want to be captive of three protective, hot men, who become enthralled by you? Especially when one of them coddles you and is so sweet your ever wish is his to fulfill. This was Mikhail, and then his two brothers. Amid some intrigue of their dealings in the Bratva world and the guys’ motivation, there was lots of sexual tension and touching -- not so much spice, at least not until the end. However, it was thematically very repetitive, both in action and words. The same events transpiring day after day, alternating among the three characters. For instance the same encounters occurred at each visit by the antiheroes with Catalina, for weeks. Little transpired after the attention-grabbing beginning until the climatic end. I did enjoy some character growth, their affection, and understanding of the whys, but because of the repetition, the story progression faltered and felt drawn out.
The characters were all very likable though I would have enjoyed more complexity in their personalities. Catalina at 22 was sweet, sheltered, easily frightened characterized by her timidity and her wide, brown, doe eyes. She was given to crying a lot, babying, and feelings of intimidation. I could understand the reasons, but her tears, sobs, and cries were so frequent I became unaffected due their abundance over the course of the story. Damien, the Pakhan and oldest at 36, was controlled, aloof, and commanding; Nikolay, 30, explosive, model gorgeous with killer instinct and desires. Probably my favorite of the three. Then a loving Mikhail (32) was the most easy going of the three and greatest caregiver to Catalina. As the most nurturing, it was interesting that the story skewed toward the most dominating. I sort of expected more “rewards” for Mikhail.
Overall, a mildly entertaining storyline, the largest issue for me being the repetition, the outbursts of cries. I predicted the outcome - so not a terrible cliffhanger, and you will want to know what happens next. I would recommend the book as an accessible story for those liking a taste of mafia with some protective bad boys, a bit of violence, on the ivory side of dark. Good story for what it was, though I didn't find myself invested during the main portion of the story.
