Childhood Sweetheart

Rate this book
Bang. Bang. Bang. I jump as the knocks on the window crash above the roaring wind outside. Who could it be, at this late hour? I open the curtains and peer outside. ‘Hello?’ But the dark, the rain and the empty lane are all I see.

It’s been eleven years since I last saw Jonah, after his brother died that stormy summer night. And now, without warning, he’s back, living in his old house next door just like old times, on the remote Scottish island that is home. Where I used to imagine we’d stay, together, forever, sharing our lives and our secrets as we always had. But that was before.

Jonah’s not the sweet boy I once knew. His mood is changeable, his behaviour unstable, our brief conversations are forced and awkward. And then the knocks on my window begin. It can only be him, but why, and what does he want? I used to love him. Now I don’t even want to invite him in.

Because after all these years, I see our childhood secrets, the ones we swore never to reveal, in a newly terrifying light. Was his brother’s death truly an accident? Could Jonah’s secrets have been worth killing for? And how safe am I now, on this isolated island, with the man I used to love…?

A totally addictive and twisty psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist. Anyone who loves The Woman in the Window, The Wife Between Us and The Housemaid won’t be able to put Childhood Sweetheart down!

Eleven Years. That is how long it has been since Alisa has seen Jonah after that fateful summer night. She thought they would always be in each other’s lives. She thought that they would remain close; that they would reminisce about old times in their old age. Then a tragedy occurred, and things would never be the same.

Alisa and her son, Kyle live on a vacation lodge on a Scottish Island. Alisa has been living and working there since that fateful summer. Moira, Jonah's mother, has provided her with a place to stay and helps with Kyle. Their lives are happy and calm, but one day, Moira announces that she has invited Jonah back to celebrate her birthday and Alisa can't shake the feeling that things are about to change.

When she was younger, Alisa hung out with Moira's son Jonah and his brother Callum. Then one horrible night, Callum died, and Jonah left town. But now he is back, and their childhood secrets weigh heavy on their minds.

Whew! Secrets are funny things. They can set you free and they can also trap you. In this book the characters have secrets that they have been hiding for a long time. What happens when they truth comes out of hibernation and secrets are revealed???

This book sucked me in, and I was fully invested in learning about what those secrets might be. I love tension in books, and I loved how the author incorporated it in this book. When Jonah comes back, the tension can be felt, and it flows throughout this book. I also liked the story was told in two storylines and as the plot unfolded, we learned more and more.

Then there is that TWIST at the end, it's a big one. There are other smaller twists along the way, but then the BIG one is revealed, and readers will be shocked! Nicely played, Clarke!

Fans of Clarke will not be disappointed. This was my first book by the author, and I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Est Page Count ~ 348
Audio length ~ 11 hours 40 minutes

This one totally messed with my head and was slow going, at times confusing, for me and didn't really pick up until somewhere in the 60% area. From there on it grabbed me and I was really interested in how it would all play out. I was mostly happy with the conclusion, but the last chapter ending before the epilogue was a little odd, rushed maybe?

Told in multiple 3rd person by Ailsa, Jonah and Callum in the present with some 'then' flashbacks. I think the fact that it was written this way made for some nice twists that I didn't see coming, but also some repetitiveness. My mama heart was thumping real hard on some pages.

I can't say I really liked many of the characters, especially the mean girls from high school. I really felt bad for Seth too. I enjoyed Kyle's fun facts about dogs ~ such as "their noses have a special pattern, and no two dogs have the same."

Overall, after it picked up and I got used to the Scottish terms it was a thrilling ride. First, but not my last time reading this authors work.

Childhood Sweetheart is one twisty read. Toward the end there was one twist after another; all of them shocking and totally unexpected. Wendy Clarke expertly created a character driven, compelling story where the past comes back with a vengeance and damaging truths are revealed. The mystery is atmospheric, haunting and has an eerie undertone. This is an entertaining slow burn that explodes with a chilling and intense conclusion. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's a gripping thriller with three major twists. The story revolves around Ailsa, a single mother taking care of her special needs son on a remote Scottish island. One day, her childhood friend Jonah returns to the island. But is it a happy reunion? Alisa's son is saying that there’s a man knocking on his window at night, asking to be let in. Could it be Jonah? What does he want? Is Ailsa safe with him back around? It's also a twist-filled domestic thriller that is as hauntingly cold as it is heatedly dramatic. There are lots of hints of psychological thrills and terror set on this remote Scottish island. The remoteness of the island itself could easily account for 95% of the terror. The story is written mainly from Ailsa and Jonah’s perspectives...but also the 3rd person...dead Callum is thrown in in the present with some "what was it like "then" flashbacks. It's somewhat slow-paced at first, but eventually picks up speed. I loved the setting of the Scottish island, and the story had plenty of twists, turns, along with red herrings. Ailsa's challenges as a parent are well and truthfully described, and her son's personality is very well done. A really good read and the BIG reveal...? You will never see it coming. I will also put the trigger warnings at the top of this review but will also include a warning here... there is a rape and child abuse as part of the story.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Childhood Sweetheart' by Wendy Clarke.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Wendy Clarke, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 23rd August 2022.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'Blind Date' which I would highly recommend!!

I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. I am also a huge fan of Wendy after reading 'Blind Date' and if this book is half as good as that is it's guaranteed to be a page turner! The synopsis stated that 'Anyone who loves The Woman in the Window, The Wife Between Us and The Housemaid won’t beable to put Childhood Sweetheart down!' I am a huge fan of 'The Wife Between Us' so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture  that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 49 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ,UK 🇬🇧. I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture where the scenes are set at times. I have actually holidayed in Scotland on several occasions so will be keeping an eye out to see if I recognise any places mentioned.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Ailsa and Jonah Wallace. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

OMG!!! Wow!!! I was NOT expecting any of that!! Mind absolutely BLOWN!!!!

Well, well, well Wow!!! What an absolute cracker of a book!!! This book sucked me straight in from beginning to the explosive ending. It was very well written with excellent descriptions which put me straight into the storyline. The blog, title and the cover suited the book perfectly.

The storyline was very fast paced and filled with Drama, tension and suspense. The prologue had me hook, line and sinker and gives readers something to sink their teeth and imaginations into immediately! A very believable storyline which kept me on edge throughout. I loved all the twists and turns and throughout it kept me guessing what was going on and who was doing what. I would NEVER have guessed at the ending so a MASSIVE WELL DONE to Wendy. I have read many thrillers and it's getting harder and harder for me to be surprised so great job there. There were so many mysteries in this book it just kept getting better and better!!! It was filled with suspense, romance, tension, friendship, lies and deceit and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout!!! My heart was pounding and the hairs on my arms were raised while I was on the edge of my seat biting my nails reading this!! The Scottish dialogue used throughout made the story more realistic and adds to the feeling that you are there with Ailsa and Jonah. The only thing I was gutted about was that the setting was a figment of Wendy's imagination . However , you would never have thought this when reading as Wendy describes the scene perfectly and it sounded gorgeous. Sadly you can't visit Bray or The Stag in real life but if you want to visit these stunning places you just need to open the pages of this mind blowing novel!! If you pick this up make sure you clear your diaries as you will NOT be able to put it down until the explosive ending!!! I loved the storyline and just loved everything about it. It was all done perfectly!! This would make an absolutely amazing movie!!!

It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.

THE characters were fantastic, solid and completely believable, or are they?? Sadly I can't say much more than this as I don't want to give anything away. I will say that Wendy's potrayal of Kyle (Alisha's son) who had autism was 100% realistic and it is lovely to see diversity in a psychological thriller. I was completely invested in both Kyle and Ailsa and I loved the kindness Ailsa showed Seth's dog. The fact that Wendy has researched autism and police procedures absolutely shines through the pages. There's little worse than than a book littered with unnecessary errors as the author hasn't done any research into their plot subjects so a HUGE WELL DONE to Wendy. They all had such different and strong personalities and all suited the storyline perfectly.

Well done Wendy on yet another mind blowing page turner!! This is exactly why you are one of my favourite authors . Here's to your next success 🥂

Overall a compelling, page turning, mind blowing psychological thriller that will keep you up late at night

Genres covered in this book include Thriller, Psychological Thriller, Suspense, Psychological Fiction, Domestic Drama, Crime Thriller and Suspense Thriller amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Woman in the Window, The Wife Between Us, The Housemaid, you, your friends, your neighbours.your family and your pet dog!!!

381 pages.

This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle or free on kindle unlimited (at time of review) and £8.99 on paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

A standalone psychological thriller by author Wendy Clarke. If I am honest it took me quite a while to start enjoying this one but in fairness to the author by the end I was fully absorbed.

Ailsa and her son Kyle live on a remote Scottish Island. When Alisa was younger she had a boyfriend named Jonah and now years later she is living in a lodge owned by his mother, Briona. It was during their high school days that there was an accident resulting in the death of Jonah’s brother Callum. Jonah was blamed for the accident and left the island in shame never to be seen again until now. Emotions and memories are rampant with Jonah’s return and dark secrets are likely to be revealed especially regarding the day of the accident.

The more I read the more I enjoyed it, good characters and a twisting storyline told over two timelines. I found this book very slow in the build up but once I got to grips with the characters I enjoyed it a lot more.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Ailsa’s first love Jonah has returned home after being away for 11 years. Jonah left their small village when his brother Callum died in a tragic accident. For the past 10 years Ailsa has been single mother to her autistic son Kyle. She does have help with Kyle, and that is with Jonah’s mother Moira, who is her boss. Ailsa and Moira have much more than a working relationship, as they are quite close.

As the story is told in a dual timeline fashion, we see that relationship that Ailsa had with Jonah as they were growing up. But we also see what Jonah’s relationship was like with his brother Callum. The brothers were as different as night and day. Jonah was kind, protective and sensitive. Callum was more like their abusive father, displaying aggressive and unkind behavior towards anyone that came in his path. Jonah felt very loyal to Callum and was truly devastated after he died.

This story slowly unfolds as secrets from their past are beginning to come to light. Now that Jonah is back, albeit only for a short time, Ailsa and Moira see a different side of him, as the emotional pain that that is consuming him has truly changed him. Not only has Jonah been holding onto secrets from their past, but Moira has secrets of her own. With very good reason, Ailsa is concerned about the future she has to offer for Kyle, as long ago secrets and current revelations are shaking up her world.

Although this story may have had a slow start, Wendy Clarke has created characters that had a lot of depth, even the town’s outcast, Seth. Then there was the thrilling plot that was executed marvelously. This engaging read reaches a crescendo when the past and present collide. The conclusion really floored me as there were some really surprising twists that led to a shocking ending. What a fabulous job by a fabulous author!

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

This story took a while to get going but once it finally did, it kept my interest. There are so many secrets that bubble to the surface surrounding a boy who died in a boating accident. It gets quite intense. A pretty good thriller.

Ailsa is living her life with her son Kyle at Loch Briona. It's a lodge owned by Moira, the mother of her old boyfriend Jonah. When they were in high school, Jonah's brother Callum dies in an accident and since then Jonah felt guilty it was his fault and has never returned to Loch Briona until now. When Jonah returns, old memories come back for Alisa, secrets are revealed, and truths about what really happened that dreadful day to Callum.

This was an interesting story filled with secrets, lies, and some surprises. I want to say it is more of a drama than a thriller. I enjoyed the past and present timelines and the story overall. It is a little slow to start, but picks up about halfway in. If you have enjoyed Wendy Clarke's past novels, you are sure to enjoy this one!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I felt like this book started off really slow, but the 2nd half picked up. I also didn’t really feel like the story matched the synopsis. The story centers on Ailsa, who works at a vacation lodge on a remote island in Scotland for the mother of her childhood best friend. Her friend, Jonah, left the island after the death of his brother, 11 years earlier, and is now reluctantly returning for his mother’s 60th birthday. The story is primarily told from Ailsa’s POV, but also has chapters told from both Jonah and his brother’s POV, some in current time and some in the past.

I had a tough time getting through the first 3rd of the book, and felt like it was hard to connect with the characters. It moved at a faster clip after that and I also found myself liking Ailsa more and more as the book continued. There were a couple big twists towards the end, most of which I figured out, but one that took me by surprise. The ending of the book is abrupt and feels rushed but I couldn’t really complain about how it all ended up.

Overall, decent book that I’m glad I read, but the fact that it took me so long to engage makes it a 3 star book rather than 4. This is the same rating I’ve given all the other books I’ve read by this author. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It took a while for the plot to really get going. The first third of the book was a little slow but a little bit creepy in places. After that however, it was a roller coaster that twist, I did not see it coming!!! I probably should have but I didn't. I did guess Jonas secret pretty early on though. The ending was very bitter sweet. It broke my heart a little. Really enjoyed Childhood Sweethearts and will definitely be checking out more by Wendy Clarke in the future.

A spectacular setting and an unpredictable plot make this a stellar read.

The vivid descriptions of this wild and beautiful landscape with its moorland and peat bogs had me longing for a trip back to Scotland. I could almost feel and hear the wind whipping along the coast of this isolated island. What a great setting for a psychological suspense! One doesn’t have to read too far into the book to get the sense of isolation and claustrophobia that the Bray Island inhabitants would feel being cut off from the mainland.

I loved the characters in this book - all of them, from Seth to Moira! Clarke absolutely captures the neurodiverse character’s essence. He’s the voice the Bray Islanders need to pay more attention to as he sees more than he’s capable of sharing.

I’ve yet to see the twist coming in one of Wendy Clarke’s books and this one was no different. The tension was high, the atmosphere was dark and foreboding and the ‘bread crumbs’ were spread far enough apart that it was a compelling read. At times, I couldn’t wait to get off the island.

Let’s talk about that gorgeous cover! The broken stems with the battered petals give an uneasy feeling and the tagline hooks readers. I love the design similarity in each of the six Clarke thrillers I’ve read - same font, dual colour, bright and bold. Fantastic!

I envy you readers who choose to read this fantastic psychological thriller - I’d almost give anything to have a chance to read it again for the first time!

I was gifted this advance copy by Wendy Clarke, Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

It has been eleven years since Alisha has seen Jonah after his brother died on that stormy summer night. Jonah was blamed for the accident and left the island in shame never to be seen again.

Alisha has been a single parent for ten years to her autistic son Kyle. They live in Jonah's mother's lodge.

And now he is back without warning living next door, just like old times when Alisha used to imagine they would stay together forever, sharing their lives and secrets as they always had.

But Jonah has returned changed, he is no longer the sweet boy she knew. His moods are changeable and their conversations are now forced and awkward.

Emotions and memories are returning with Jonah's dark secrets likely to be revealed about the day of the accident.

A mind blowing book that starts as a slow burn and explodes with a chilling conclusion.

Firstly let me just say, that yes this story is a bit of a slow burner, slow start but in my opinion it has to be, so as to build up the characters to really get a feel for them, and for us to see said characters background, history of them growing up, as it all forms part of the bigger picture for where the story takes you.

So despite the slow burner of a start, I really did enjoy this story, I liked getting to know the important characters of Alisa, Jonah, Callum and Moria, seeing how they interact with each other and each of their behaviours/characteristics which gives you insight into the story.

I also liked the character of Kyle, the young boy who has autism and how that played an intricate part in the story. It also gives the reader an insight in to what it’s really like for a person/child to have autism if they don’t already know.

The author has definitely written this story well, creating lots of intrigue, plot twists, shocking moments, leaves us guessing and sitting on seat in eager anticipation of what might happen next.

This book for me started off quite slowly and I admit to wondering if it was for me as I like my books to be fast paced from the start. However even though this was a slow start after nearly half way through the pace picked up immensely and I was completely absorbed in the story, There were a few very unexpected reveals that at times rendered me speechless, In spite of the slow start this book turned out to be a complete page turner,

First things first...the book is a cracker in terms of atmospheric settings and vivid visual descriptions of a moody island on Scotland which I absolutely loved being transported to, and that is one of the reasons I got into the thick of it right from go!
Set in a remote Scottish isle, the tale has as many shades as the Loch Briona where the narrative takes place. It's an intense, high voltage thriller with dramatic twists and turns that keep you glued till the end. The plot is filled with secrets, lies, drama and deception and some well etched characters. Dual timeline is a feature I love and Clarke has made its use well here. This was my first book by the author but I've enjoyed it so much that I'm definitely going to be checking out her other books too.

So this was my first book by this author and while I enjoyed the story I didn’t find it very “thrilling” - yes there was a twist but we all knew it was coming and that something just wasn’t right about the Callum/Jonah and Seth situation. Also we are left wondering if Moira was killed or succumbed to an illness. There were some characters such as Sorcha that were just fillers and didn’t really need to be in the story. I enjoyed the setting of a the small island off the western shore of Scotland.

Also just let Kyle have a damn dog! Seriously 😉

Thank you for the opportunity to read/review. I would be interested in reading future books by this author.

My Review:
Enjoyed!!!! This one was definitely a slow starter but once it got going I couldn’t put it down. It had one heck of an ending that I never saw coming, not in a million years. I just couldn’t believe it and was in total shock. I had to read it twice. If you read my blog then you know I’m a sucker for any book with a twisted ending and this one definitely had that. This author is no stranger to me and I have liked everything I’ve read by her so far. I can’t wait for her next book to come out and totally recommend this author to anyone that enjoys a good mystery.

In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 4 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️

I really just wasn’t a fan of this book, I felt like it was slow going to me. I felt like this probably would of been a lot better for it to be a love story with your childhood sweetheart, instead of trying to make it suspenseful

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.”

― Roald Dahl

Eleven Years ago a tragedy occurred that would change the course of so many lives. In this atmospheric and beautifully written novel, Wendy Clarke has described the pure love of childhood friends, a horrible tragedy, and the endurance of one woman who has been dealt a terrible fate. Ailsa, a single mother living with her autistic son, has not seen her best friend Jonah in eleven years. She thought they would always be friends but then tragedy happened and he disappeared.

Ailsa and her son, Kyle now live in a cabin on a Scottish island, where Jonah and his brother, Callum lived while growing up. Moira, their mother, has taken care of Ailsa and her son Kyle, while Ailsa helps her to run the vacation homes. They are very close, and despite Kyle’s issues, their lives are peaceful and happy. Until Moira decides she would like to invite Jonah back to celebrate her birthday. Unfortunately, the Jonah that comes back is not the same one that left 11 years ago. They are strangers and Ailsa cannot figure out what has changed about him. But he is not the same person she knew and loved.

There is a big secret that Jonah is keeping from Ailsa and Moira, and sometimes secrets bring you closer together when they are revealed. Not in this book. These secrets have been kept for such a long time that they break the fragile exterior that kept this family together. What happens when Moira and Ailsa find out what Jonah has been hiding.

Childhood Sweetheart is so much more than the title, as Jonah and Ailsa never become “sweethearts” because of a secret he told her so many years ago. Told in dual timelines and from dual points of view; Ailsa and Jonah, this amazing book is rich in atmosphere and tension, drawing me in from the very first chapter. I knew there were secrets, and I was ready and invested in learning what they might be. When Jonah arrives from the mainland, the reader has already had a visit inside his psyche and knows he is not quite “right”. We can feel the tension flow throughout the book, as Moira and Ailsa expect him to be one way, but he does not live up to those expectations. As secrets from the past come to light, we can see the emotional pain Jonah is in and the enormous secret he has been carrying all of these years. When Kyle’s paternity becomes known, it changes the course of their lives as it forces Jonah to show them who he really is.

Clarke has done a fantastic breaking down the relationship between two brothers who could not be more different. She has created characters that had a lot of depth, even the town’s outcast, Seth. The plot leaves you breathless and is well executed. Even though we are given tiny plot twists along the way, the ending is shocking. There is also a unique and thrilling plot that is executed marvelously. The conclusion really floored me as there were some amazing twists that led to a shocking ending.

Imagine this. A beautiful lake. Trees. Birdsong. Your next door neighbour living a few miles away. Sounds nice, right? Well, yes? Some people like to live in a secluded place. I admit it can be very peaceful and wonderful.

Not for me though. I don’t want to live in a busy city centre either. My preference goes to a mixture of both. A lovely little village where you can still hear the birds and spot a rabbit, squirrel or hedgehog playing in your garden. Shops within walking distance and people to stop and have a chat with is more my kind of style.

Ailsa feels more at ease on a remote Scottish island. It’s where she is born and grew up. Her life is there. Her job is there. She would not have it any other way. She is happy, but maybe not one hundred percent though. Her mind often wanders back, thinking about her childhood sweetheart.

She would love to see him again. You know the saying “be careful what you wish for?” You really should…

I like the way the author alternated between the past and the present thus revealing every little detail we need.

The story is slow paced in the beginning, giving me the feeling I was reading a drama rather than a psychological thriller. Fear not. The author uses this to prepare you for what is still to come. I promise you it’s as great as it is shocking.

I picked a few of the hints up, but boy oh boy, the author still hit me with surprises left, right and centre.

A great book. Once again I realise how well people can keep things hidden if they want to. 5 stars.

Thank you

I’ve read a number of books by this author and always enjoyed them so I was looking forward to reading this one. Set on the Isle of Bray I found this quite a slow burner and initially I was convinced that I’d worked it all out way before any reveals. I might have got a few things right but oh my goodness there are some massive reveals in this book that hadn’t even crossed my mind. Well written story with a great plot and some fascinating characters. Written from the points of view of the main protagonists, Ailsa, Jonah and Callum, and in the past (then) and present, it’s a story that raises a lot of issues: autism, bullying, alcoholism, verbal and physical abuse just for starters.

Briefly, Ailsa was brought up alongside Jonah and his brother Callum but they were two very different boys and her friendship was with Jonah. Callum always had his fathers nasty temper whereas Jonah was the quieter and kinder boy. When Callum dies in an accident Jonah can’t forgive himself and leaves the island only returning 11 years later when his mother Moira asks him to come back for her birthday. But his return stirs up old secrets and emotions.

I loved how Ailsa’s sons autism is dealt with, I felt that the author must’ve had some dealings with autism herself, it’s actually made me feel like I wanted to give Ryan a hug, when I knew I couldn’t! I also felt extremely sorry for Seth and the things he had to endure. The climax is a real shocker and I adored how it played out, and as for the last few lines of the book it said it all. A really good read.

'Childhood sweetheart' attracted me, being a psychological thriller set in the remote Scottish Highlands & Islands, written by an author I hold in high regard. I wasn't disappointed.

The main character, Ailsa, is living in the Island home she grew up in with her son, a preteen who is neurodivergent, and Ailsa is challenged in home schooling him in addition to working on holiday lodges. She is single, and appears not to have moved on since the apple of her eye, Jonah, left the island many years ago, following the tragic death of his brother. Aisle's. boss happens to be Jonah's mum and summons him home to celebrate a milestone birthday. This is the catalyst for all sorts of secrets and lies from the past to come to light.

This is a great read, it has a darkness running through it, that really conjures up imagery around the remote and presumably bleak, location. Characters are extremely well portrayed, and I felt this a real strength in this novel. This is a book that kept me up any night and sleeping with one eye open!

An excellent read that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. My thanks to netGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.

I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.

Wendy Clarke is a bestselling author of psychological thrillers. She started her career writing short fiction and serials for national women’s magazines. After having over three hundred short stories published, she progressed to writing novels. With a degree in psychology and intrigued with how the human mind can affect behaviour, it was inevitable that she would eventually want to explore her darker side.

“The most painful goodbyes are the ones that are never said and never explained.”

Ailsa is doing her best to raise her autistic son while working for Moira as her mother had. Their history is long and twisted, the depths neither truly knows. When Moira invites her son home for her birthday, Ailsa expects things to be awkward but more or less the same. Neither could have anticipated what Moira had planned.

I loved the character's names in this novel. They were all so lovely. The setting was a character in its own way, beautiful and dark, lonely and dangerous. I loved that you could feel the stunning remoteness as you read.

The characters were all well developed, and I enjoyed getting to know them. I liked how the story was told, with alternating narrators and timelines. The plot was well done and delivered beautifully.

The twists in this story were insane and scary. But also exceptionally well done. This was like being on a rollercoaster, with the sharp turns and sudden drops plunging you in directions you couldn’t predict.

The final twists in this novel were so well executed, and the last sentences were so beautiful, so pure, that I just stared at them for a few moments. I enjoyed this journey.
