Beautiful: A dark and sweet, modern Beauty and the Beast retelling

Rate this book
You think you know their story . . .
Bella-Rosa Amato
My life is the envy of women everywhere. I live in a gorgeous mansion, wear expensive clothes, go to A-list parties, and attend a prestigious college.
It is a life of beauty and glamor . . . and all of it is a lie.
Behind closed doors, I am bullied by my cold and powerful father. With no money of my own, I have no choice but to obey him . . .
Until I am attacked, and a half man-half beast intervenes. Kit takes me to his home to heal, where I am immersed in his secret world. As we bond over unexpected experiences and shared interests, my gratitude changes into something that feels as old as time.

Kit/King
I was created for the darkness and, for a while, it controlled me. But I escaped that life and made a new home for myself.
Before Bella crossed my path, I didn’t think happiness was possible. But she not only accepts my differences, she offers friendship.
Her gentle and compassionate heart opens me up to those parts within me.
With her, I don’t feel like the beast I have always been labeled.
But the closer we get, the more I wonder if I am truly as human as she believes, and whether the mistakes of the beast can ever be forgiven . . .

When an old enemy resurfaces, Bella and Kit will need to stand firm in their love, face the brutalities of the past, and trust in the beauty that comes from within to make it out alive.

BEAUTIFUL is a sweet and dark, modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast. The themes of beauty, strength, redemption, and love shine through in an unforgettable tale that will make you question everything you think you know about beauty . . . and the beast.

This beauty here is
'For those who never stopped believing in fairy tales and the magic of true love.'

Dark and yet wonderfully sweet, Beautiful is a tale for the heart.

"Nobody can love a Beast."

Well... let's agree to disagree, because Kit is one beast any woman would absolutely fall for. Furry paw-hands and beastly appearance included.

A beautiful and secluded young woman escapes dire straits and ends up in the arms of a Beast.

"Don't be afraid. You're safe with me." are the words that assure Bella before she succumbs to darkness. Along with a heartfelt compassion shining in golden cat-like eyes. And this is how a magical love story begins, along with a wish on a magic moon.

In this modern Beauty and the Beast retelling with an unexpected twist, A.K. Leigh gives the reader a tale of beauty, kindness, strength, redemption, and love. One in which feelings leap of the page and nothing is just black and white.

The Beauty needs to find the strength to stand up for herself and the one she loves, while the Beast needs to accept that 'darkness can only exist where there is light.' A difficult thing to do when you see yourself as "a.... thing! An absolute abomination of nature."

Kit's inner struggle and despair made me want to reach into the tale and give him a big hug.

"I would never be anything other than what I was. A beast. A freak of nature who had to be hidden away in a cave for the good of humanity. ...
There is no light in me. I am only darkness."

Of course Bella will fall for the Beast, just as he will fall for her. In a sweet and gentle tale of healing and understanding. But the past won't stay buried and the Beast will find himself forced to face that which he fears the most - the Beast within himself.

Dark, enchanting and very well written, Beautiful is not very fast paced but loaded with feeling. Sad at times and sappy at others, just as a perfect love story should be for me. The character development shines over plot and action and that is why this tale may not appeal to all readers out there.

All in all, Beautiful is truly an unforgettable tale that will make you question everything you think you know about beauty . . . and the beast.

Give it a try especially if you're a sappy old romantic like me. I guarantee you're gonna love it.

“Don’t be afraid. You’re safe with me.”
Well written retelling of Beauty and the Beast. A beautiful, smart, secluded and kept young women escapes and is saved by an outcast “Beast”. A sweet romance with dark patches for both characters. Both come into their own with the help from each other. A different read for me and I enjoyed it.

I felt like this was a wonderful spin off off of the 90's TV show and the modern reboot in the 2000's of the Beauty and the Beast show, so if you liked those you love this! This has our Beast, Kit being an escaped military experiment and living off the grid in a commune-like zone (but isolated from people).

He saves Bella from her abusive father (he tries to pimp her out and she escapes but gets wounded) and takes her back to his cave. She remains blindfolded as she heals and this made for my favorite drama of the book! The small and angsty interactions with Kit were so beautiful. Made my heart tightened at moments! He's had to do dark things in the past, k1ll, and was beaten.

I would've liked to see more built on the drama of his serum that he has to take to tame his beast nature (and seeing how he has to fight that...her seeing what it does to him). And i wouldve liked more detail on his physical differences. This was closed door. Just a tiny bit more spice would've elevated their relationship, i think. Those are just some things I would've liked to explore further! Like 50 pages more of things diving into that, and it would be a 5 star! It ended just a little too fast too.

But I still very much enjoyed the close proximity conversations. They were so incredibly sweet. I loved her unconditional love for him! He was a Cinnamon roll!

I really enjoyed A.K. Leigh's version of the classic Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. This author has an excellent writing style and I especially loved the way that she's incorporated so many of the small elements of the original tale into her own book yet still created a completely unique and original story.
Set in the modern world of cell phones and scientific experiments gone wrong, Beautiful still celebrates the power of wishes and the belief in magical forces at play in our lives.
Kit and Bella's improbable love story takes place behind the walls of a secluded gated community, amidst a delightfully vibrant and diverse group of characters, friend and foe, hero and villain alike. Although a classically sweet, slow-burn romance, there is still plenty of mystery and suspense, action and danger to keep the reader entertained until the very end. I recommend this story to both fans of the original classic tale and to those who've never read that as this story definitely stands on its own.

Beautiful is by far my favorite Beauty and the Beast retelling (I've read 6 other retellings). There are so many things I loved about this book that I'll try to be concise and not ramble while I sigh in happiness.

First off, I loved Kit and Bella. Kit (the beast) is so kind. Most retellings have a beast that's a total jerk. Not here. He was created in a lab to be a killing machine, part man part lion, so he has done some things in his past with his beast side that he regrets. But he also has quite a history of abuse by his captors and trauma from what he did that makes your heart ache for him. Bella has an abusive father that hits her and uses her in his business dealings. She's strong and determined to change her situation. She felt real and I genuinely liked her.

One night she gets into a bad situation and Kit finds her hurt in the woods. I want to stop here and note that Bella is not raped or sexually abused. I was really afraid that would happen but it does not. Kit takes Bella in and nurses her back to health. To hide the fact that he's part beast her eyes are kept covered. Kit risks getting in trouble by caring for Bella and she worries about her father or the police finding her.

Their friendship was wonderful and the way Kit cared for Bella was so sweet. They both had trauma and could relate to each other and ultimately help each other grow. Their story of healing and opening up to each other was just so beautiful. Kit is patient with Bella, understanding that her learned behaviors from abuse would not automatically go away. When Kit would withdraw Bella understood it was out of fear and not rejection of her. Bella was so accepting of Kit, even when she saw him and learned of his past, which was exactly what he needed. They were perfect for each other.

We also get to see them together as a couple. Too often a couple gets together in the last chapter, but here we get a glimpse into their dating life and I loved it.The book is fade to black, but you can feel the heat and chemistry between them and I loved it. Once together there is no angst between. Their trust and maturity was really refreshing.

Oh and the Hilda/Vincent relationship was so cute. It gave me nice Practical Magic vibes.

The ending was perfect happy ending. Good guys get what they want and the bad guys get what they deserve. The only thing missing was I wanted to know what their living arrangement in the future would be out of sheer curiosity.

Though tough subjects are covered, I never felt like the book was dark. There's hope, friendship, found family, healing, redemption, and true love to brighten everything. A delightful read that I'm adding to my favorite romances list.

Bella-Rosa will never be able to please her father. She is not his priority. She is his pawn. He believes that “beauty is her power” and he uses it to his advantage by “pimping” her out to prospective business partners. However, when one party goes too far and she is beaten and escapes into the woods, a mysterious man saves her life and promises to protect her. Who is this kind and generous stranger who has given her so much? And why is she asked to keep her eyes covered for the majority of her recuperation? What is he hiding?

Kit is a science experiment gone bad. Part human, part beast. He is in hiding and saves Bella. She is beautiful. She is brave. She is unafraid. But she doesn’t know his secrets and the horrific acts he has done in the past. She is human and cannot be with him. “There is no light in him. He is only darkness.”

This modern Beauty and the Beast story has a different and rather surprising ending than the others which I cannot reveal, but it clearly shows us that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And, of course, Bella becomes stronger by getting away from her toxic father and taking charge of her life. While Kit learns to find power in accepting who he is and not being defined by his past.

Overall, this is a dark and enchanting twist on one of my favorite fairy tales. Although slow in some parts, it did capture the essence of the tale.

Thank you to Ms. Hatchmann for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

I'm not the biggest Disney fan, but if I ever decide to watch a Disney movie, it's almost always going to be Beauty and the Beast. I really appreciated Leigh's darker, more realistic version of the story. Just as with the previous book I read by her, I found myself immersed in the plot and falling in love with the characters.

I really loved the background she gave for the characters, particularly Kit. The way she described his past at the lab gave me chills at times; it was described so vividly that I could see it clearly. Bella's background broke my heart. I wasn't quite expecting the personality her father had, so that was a bit of a shock at first. He quickly became one of the few fictional characters I truly despise.

The basic plot of the book was the general idea of Beauty and the Beast : Bella finds herself staying with Kit and they end up falling in love. In addition to this storyline, though, Leigh introduces a second one: an investigation into Bella's disappearance, lead by a detective named Vincent. I actually loved this idea.

Bella's relationship with Kit was adorable from the first second they met. I'm usually not a big fan of semi-quickly paced romances between characters, but this one felt impossible to dislike. I also love that we got a glimpse into their official romance, rather than being left to guess how things went for them after the book ended.

Hilda's relationship with Vincent was also absolutely adorable. I wasn't expecting this one to happen, but I'm genuinely glad it did.

I found myself trying to match every aspect to the original film, which led to some confusion. Granted, this was completely on me, not Leigh. Because I'm not the biggest expert on Disney in general, let alone this specific story - favorite or not - I couldn't recognize certain connections. However, this didn't affect the quality of the novel at all; it just caused me to take a little longer to read because I got so focused on figuring it out.

If you're a Disney fan, particularly Beauty and the Beast , I highly suggest giving this one a shot. There is very slight mention of mature content, some descriptive of violent scenes, and mention of abuse, but otherwise nothing is too triggering. I really did enjoy this novel, even with my obsession with finding connections. Leigh's writing is poetic, and I consider some of the lessons I got from Beautiful to be extremely important.

This retelling of Beauty and the Beast is truly amazing! The story is completely unique while also keeping to the original story, which is something to commend the author on!
.
The writing was great, without any annoying repeating words or phrases. The story keeps you on your toes and is interesting at all times! There aren't any dull moments at all! I literally read 90% of this book in one day, while working! The characters are so well developed and interesting! You may think you know who everyone in the story if you read the original story, but these characters are so special and different and WORTH THE READ!
.
The only critique I had for this book was that the ending was a little cheesy, but I don't know that it really could have been avoided when wanting to wrap the story up.
.
This retelling is something you will remember and think back on in the future. Something you will want your children to also read and know (when they're older of course). I will be reading this book again myself and suggest it to anyone who enjoys retellings, fairy tales, stories with exciting story lines, and anyone who loves Beauty and the Beast!

Good read

This is the story of Belle and Kit. Modern day Beauty and the Beast with just a hint of magic. This is probably one of the best Beauty and the Beast retelling I have ever read.

Belle lives in a huge mansion but is lonely and abused by her father. Kit, our beast, lives outside a community where he is somewhat imprisoned also. He finds her when he saves her life one evening and the rest is a beautiful and touching story.

I highly recommend this book to all fans and even those not really into this genre. You will not be disappointed.

This was a fun, engaging beauty and the beast retelling.

I loved the beast in this one. He had his struggles, but he never crossed any weird lines (like kidnapping) and was really a good person. Both main characters had a really strong character arc and I loved where they ended up.

The pacing felt a little off to me at times, mostly with things going really well and me wondering when things were going to start happening.

Overall, if you enjoy retellings or beauty and the beast, this is one I would recommend.

An Interesting Twist To My Favorite Story

Definitely an interesting twist on my favorite fairy tale. I read every one I find. Kit was such a humble character and Bella was a sweet match to him. It was a tad slow at times, but I overall really enjoyed the story and was worth the read. Definitely recommend if you're a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast like I am.

It was alright. Good emotional connections between the characters. Good back stories. The ending was a bit cheesy. I was hoping with the book claiming to be “dark” that there would have been some decent spice. But there was none.

Having only read one other B&B retelling a few years ago; I can confidently say that this far exceeds the other book.

“Beautiful” gets your attention from the beginning, drawing in the reader from the first chapter and doesn’t let go till the end; leaving you wanting MORE!

A modern retelling with all the significant elements of the Disney movie sprinkled all over that any fan will quickly pick up. I found myself reading well past 12am... that’s how engaging this book is!! 😁💖

Highly recommend this book to any Disney fan of the film or of fairytales in general.👍🏼📖😆

Wasnt bad. I liked the new idea of beast not that much abusing dad on Bella’s side. It had some great elements and good plot overall still I had sometimes felt that some actions or discussions or stuggles are slow and not really making progress. I liked the detective but again was strange why Bella didnt? Guess they were Mrs Pott and Clock? I assumed Lumiere is gonna be Gil and maybe the other detective as she was so starred but than the just disappeared… okey…. Im a big B&B fan and read most retellings and it doesnt have to be all the time a link… still I just waited… or Jo was Mrs Potts… ahh now Im just confusing myself… anyway… wasnt bad… okey read overall… It was just much for me all those abuse maybe even with the happy romance part…

A contemporary retelling of a story you think you know. Written in multiple first person. This was awkward at first, but once I got into the rhythm of it, it worked. You will like this if you liked the Linda Hamilton, 1987 or the Jay Ryan 2012 renderings. The touch of magic at the conclusion brought the plot full circle.
