Kingdom of Villains

Rate this book
A dark fae prince with a beastly secret. A faerie princess with a curiosity for things better left alone. A bond that will turn enemies to lovers. A love that might cost them their lives…

I’d known exactly who he was—the Unseelie prince. But I hadn’t known just what he was.
I’d been fooled.

The creature I’d formed a tentative friendship with in my family’s dungeon was not the gentle, intriguing prince I’d thought him to be.
He was a monster. A bloodthirsty beast.

And I’d helped him escape my uncle’s clutches.

Such a betrayal called for severe consequences, and the price of releasing the biggest threat our kingdom had faced in hundreds of years was not one I would survive.

But upon discovering my uncle’s foiled plans for their prince, the Unseelie demanded vengeance, and an agreement was made.

My savior and my doom returned, and this time, he wasn’t leaving without me.

Regardless of how I loathed him, the deceitful and dangerous male was my last hope. Yet when he looked at me, touched me, dared to love me, the beliefs I’d worn as armor began to melt. I couldn’t let that happen.

Though avoiding fate would prove impossible when the only way to save my life was to surrender it by marrying the monster who’d destroyed it.
_

A complete standalone with high heat, adventure, enemies to lovers, found family, and a happily ever after.

I started this right after dnf-ing a book because it required too much effort on my part and I was so burnt out by real life I didn't have enough energy to go through it.
Then I remembered I recently checked out the reviews for Kingdom of Villains after talking about it with a friend, (Fia, this was all your fault. Not Fia the main character in this book. Goodreads Fia. Little bitch Fia. You know who you are and what you've done 👀), and I remembered a lot of readers said this had tons of smut and too little plot and thought "THIS. This is what I need."
And let me tell you, it really was.
I'm gonna join the aforementioned reviewers and admit this doesn't have much depth in terms of plot, but there is a lot to enjoy anyway, starting with Fields's writing.
I absolutely adored the way she writes banter and her dialogues.
The plot was overall nothing original and a little too fast-paced, but both main characters are easily likeable and the romance very entertaining and sexy.
Kingdom of Villains is the perfect palate cleanser read to enjoy in between heavy stuff.
And this doesnt necessarily need to be a bad thing. Quite the opposite, actually.
If you're in the mood to read an effortlessly easy fantasy story and don't have too many pretensions this book's your guy.

Another swoon-worthy romantasy from the queen herself! Fia and Col were so easy to ship from the first chapter, and Col is definitely a bookish boyfriend to add to the favorites list. If you're looking for a fast read that ticks all the romantic boxes, give this one a try!

*Many thanks to the author for providing my review copy.

3.5 Stars (Some Spoilers and Safety Deets)

I wish I could have loved it, but maybe my expectations were too high since I loved The Savage and the Swan. This wasn't necessarily bad or anything like that but it just  started off really good and I for sure though it would be a 5 star... but then it got sorta boring and repetitive.

I did really like the fairytale vibes tho (mature of course). I loved the descriptions, the dresses, the way they talked, and all the creatures. I am also obsessed with anything dragon so those parts were definitely my favorites.
I really liked the beginning and how they met, and how sharp tongued the heroine was.

Buuttttt I was hoping for a bit more slow burn because of his and hers past and how she ended up in his kingdom. I was also hoping he would be a bit more villainous or edgy or reptilian or something but he was definitely way softer and human than I thought he would be. I'm not completely sure why the book is called Kingdom of Villains seeing as there was literally nothing villainous about the people in it😅 Yes, he can't control his dragon (and he may eat people), but he also felt tremendous guilt and tortured himself over it. I low-key kinda wish he was more morally grey and embraced the dragon more or something. He was just a little TOO good or sweet for me I think. I wanted some blood and all that jazz🤌

I feel like they hardly even spent any time together too before they accepted the mate bond and then after that, it was just constant sex and I was over it😅 like nothing was happening. The plot didn't pick up until close to the end, which is when it finally got good, but other than that, It just dragged. I wanted fighting or war or plotting or something to keep me entertained, because nonstop sex as a way to build their relationship was just 🥱

I also MAJORLY disliked reading and knowing anything about the harem😅 especially how much he gets jealous Abt her and the om when he literally had a rotating harem with MANY women🙃 it definitely sorta ruined the romance for me cuz it was lowkey gross and the two previous ow popping up at their engagement ball and how nice he was to one of them after she basically said the heroine probably doesn't satisfy him, left a bad taste in my mouth 🤢

I wasn't a fan of Jarron and Persys relationship either. Like Lowkey I kept wanting Persy to meet someone new or have sex with om so Jarron can suffer just like he made her suffer for so long (they're mates and he still took lovers because he was uncomfortable with their age difference/dynamics basically) but that just may be the feminist in me🤣

Overall though, it was a decent book with great worldbuilding. I wish some things were different or explained more, and I wish there was more action and plotting and deception to keep the story going, but it was still an overall fun read and I'm excited for more fantasy by this author.

Safety-

No virgins/manhoes (hero could be considered a previous manhoe but he was loyal to heroine after he met her)

Ow drama- 2 previous women in the heros harem make appearances and cause jealousy/some drama

Om drama- heroines friend/(ex)lover causes some jealousy and drama

3 month separation- hero gets rid of his harem right after he meets heroine. Heroine has sex with om during the separation, up until she meets hero again.

No cheating (although heroine was with om knowing hero is most likely her mate)

Buddy read with Warda. I'm sorry this sucks for both of us.

2.5-could've-been-better stars

Welp. That didn't turn out the way I thought it would. Honestly, among all the books I've read this weekend, I thought this one might be the winner but unfortunately... not.

One thing I've noticed post-reading is this book trying to cram three myths together. Our hero is an Unseelie Prince, who drinks blood and can shift into a dragon. So that's... something.

Anyway, it was just a fine and okay book. It has potential but I guess things went wrong for me. Because there's nothing really stood out about the plot. The chemistry was there initially, but then it just fell flat. So nothing else to report here.

You’re far too sweet for a male who shifts into a dragon and fucks like a beast.”

The Savage and the Swan is easily my favorite book of Ella's to date. And I've been practically salivating for another fantasy romance from the queen of angst. And what does she do? Give us a dragon shifter and his fae mate. GAH. I die.

Now if you've read any of Ella's books before, you know the woman brings angst. And when I say angst, I mean ANGST. Like rip your hair out, rage at the ceiling, and throw your kindle out the window sort of angst. The delicious sort, basically. But I digress. What I was trying to say is this book is not like her usual. While there's a gritty undertone to it, and it packs plenty of feels, it's angst light.
Colvin is not Ella's usual a-hole brand of heroes. This man may be a morally gray dragon shifter, but he has a heart of gold. I fell so hard and fast for him.
You need to stop this.” Leaning into him, I whispered, “Stop what?” “Ruining me from noticing anything in this world that isn’t you.”

When Fia the Fae Seelie princess discovers the Unseelie prince Colvin in her uncle's dungeon, it doesn't take long for the two to strike up an unlikely friendship. When Fia helps the prince escape, it costs her her already precarious position in her kingdom. So when the prince returns for her and she's to wed him and unite the two kingdoms? Well, she's not exactly feeling all that forced when it allows her to escape her uncles dungeon herself. Suffice it to say there's no love lost between her and her family.

What begins is an achingly tender romance between two unlikely creatures. Colvin has spent the majority of his life looking for a cure to his ailment. And his new bride to be may be the answer he's been searching for. It doesn't take him long to fall for the feral princess. But as the layers begin to peel back, you soon realize that not quite everything is as it seems.

Now I'll say this isn't my usual flavor of romance I gravitate towards. I like the aholes and I live for the angst. But a girl needs a refreshing change of pace every now and then, and boy did this bring it. It was sweet, yes, but it certainly wasn't tame. It had just enough grit to suck me in with plenty of feels to keep me glued to the pages. I love that it's not your typical prince rescue the princess story. It's so much more than that and Fia was such a fierce heroine that I couldn't get enough of her.

Everything about this story from the stunning world building to the enrapturing secondary characters sucked me right in, and didn't let me go until the end.

Nie mam zamiaru czytać kolejnych 150 stron o zniszczonym przez życie facecie bo zżera go sumienie że zabija ludzi będąc smokiem (🤔), a ona mu pomoże w traumie odwdzięczając się za to że on poświęca jej uwagę i toleruje jej dziwactwa.

Kingdom of Villains is an entertaining, character driven, fantasy romance written in the captivating writing style I've come to expect from Ella Fields. From the very first chapter, she had me hooked and invested in the story of Fi, an unruly fae princess, and Colvin, a mysterious fae prince from a rival court, and I enjoyed every single intriguing, steamy, magical moment of it. This couple is impossible not to love!

Fi is strong, brave, smart, and kind hearted. Colvin is hot, tortured, sweet, and terrifying at times (depending on who you ask.) The chemistry between them is immediate and just gets more intense as their time together progresses. While most of this author's books are extremely angsty, this one isn't, but there is a good reason for that. Gut-wrenching angst or not, Fi and Colvin's love story is beautiful and heartwarming.

Before I conclude my review, I want to mention a couple of side characters that piqued my interest, Jarron and Percy. I would definitely be interested in reading their story if Ella ever decided to write it. Age gap, taboo romance is my shit! The angst between those two would be next level, and we all know there is no one better to write a romance with that kind of painful, passionate, push and pull.

Fans of Ella Fields and fantasy romance, this one's for you!

too tame & sweet for a book with a title like “Kingdom of Villains” imo, especially the H. i thought he’d be more of an anti-hero, but hes rather on the soft & swoony side. the book is also giving a lot of Game of Thrones (cause the H can shift into a dragon and the h is sometimes called “Mother of Monster”) & Blood and Ash vibes. the plot didnt make me particularly care; but as far as the arranged marriage trope goes, it was enough to satiate me as i was in the mood for it when i picked this up. the h was likeable and pretty badass from my observation. overall, nothing special but i enjoyed it, and its definitely better than the fantasy romance i read last year by this same author, The Savage and the Swan.

I also absolutely NEED a book about the whole situation with Persy and Jarron and I was kinda interested in that whole drama between her and that copper haired guy and the den. That has a lot of potential.

I loved this, though I would've loved it more if only there was more time at the beginning when getting to know each other. If they had spent more time talking when he was a prisoner, it would've been perfect. I guess this was excused later in the book, but i still spent half of the book wondering why the hell this guy was so obsessed with her.

Genre: Fantasy Romance
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:

Fia Callula might be a princess but her wild heart led her to monsters and never-ending trouble. When she made a fatal mistake, Colvin Eldorn came to her rescue but the Unseelie prince might be the most dangerous monster of them all.

I enjoyed the overall story and especially like the inclusion of a dragon. However, considering the title, I thought it would be darker/bloodier. There weren’t many villainous happenings in the book and the enemies-to-lovers aspect was quite light.

“You need to stop this.”
Leaning into him, I whispered, “Stop what?”
“Ruining me from noticing anything in this world that isn’t you.”

I liked Fia. She reminded me of two well-known fictional characters from a tv series and an animated movie. I was drawn to Colvin’s tortured hero persona and I liked the relationship dynamics in his inner circle.

Kingdom of Villains is a story of survival and fated mate. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a light fantasy romance.

Based on the description I was expecting dark lovers to enemies story. Well, I couldn't be more disappointed. They are pretty chummy from the beginning and Fia hates Colvin for a brief moment only.

There is no chemistry between main leads, I am just not buying it. At the beginning Fia is resisting her best friends romantic attempts. But immediately after she finds out Colvin is her mate, she decides to give herself to said BF and doesn't seem to care for her supposed mate at all. Like why? Even after she's taken by Unseelie I can sense 0 chemistry and it doesn't change til the end.

I am not very fond of the storytelling either. I got confused a lot by what are the characters doing and what's happening. I had troubles picture the story in my had because of author's vague storytelling. Some of the time skips made me feel like I missed a chapter, for example when Unseelie came for Fia, they were preparing for the journey and suddenly she's in Unseelie palace because she fainted. That happens a few times.

I didn't like Colvin, he is lacking in personality and I find him pretty boring. Because of the description I expected dark ruthless brooding Villain, but I got a confused puppy instead. Reading Fia's POV was slightly better, but she didn't leave much of a impression of me.

I am missing details. We don't get to know much about the world itself, the two kingdoms or any of the characters including main leads. We are given snippets of their lives with no further explanation. There is little to know about Fia's mother and her story feels incomplete and even after some half-assed explanation I still don't get why Colvin was willingly in the prison.

And why did Queen blamed Fia for Colvin's escape? She didn't have to say it at all. She could have just say she's furious about the king trying to execute her son and as a revenge she demands his niece as a hostage or something . Her talk about consequences was totally undeserved and it gave everyone the wrong idea. Odette instigated people against Fia and then she's all surprised they actually wanted to execute her. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

I’m not sure what to say here.

I randomly downloaded this after it popped up on Amazon and I’m not disappointed, but im also not overjoyed… Just a whole lot of mixed feelings here. I think the main issue I had with this book was that I was confused for the majority of it. I felt like we didn’t get enough inner dialogue from the characters and when they said someone I was usually caught off guard. LIKE SOME STUFF JUST POPPED UP OUT OF THE BLUE… Maybe the author was hoping that readers would infer or read between the lines, but it’s almost impossible. There was so many moving parts *which I usually like in a fantasy novel* but it just didn’t seem organized in this one. I had to go back and re-read parts a couple times to make sure I wasn’t going crazy because some scenes just happened with no build up. The writing style was not my favourite.

Fia was okay. I admired her at sometimes, but she annoyed me the majority of the time. She constantly complained about her life being ruined, but I failed to see that. She had no loving family in her own kingdom and wasn’t treated properly??!! Maybe it’s just me but I wouldn’t want to go back to that… Colvin wasn’t much better. I adored him for how he treated Fia, but nothing special stood out to me.

The smut was a fun read, but a little too repetitive for me. It was just the same scene over and over again…

“Did he ever make you scream?” When I didn’t respond, struggling to say anything as my heart stopped, he growled, “Answer me.” “No,” I croaked, the burn of his words combined with that of his cock scalding and delicious. “Good.” At my mouth, he warned with gentle wrath, “Allow me to be the first.”

Still struggling for a proper rating, but probably 2.75/5 ⭐️

A sweet HEA & Good Seggs Scenes

🌶🌶🌶/5 -A sweet HEA & Good Seggs Scenes… However - the story just fell flat on this one? It progressed too quickly and also not at all? I’m a HUGE Ella Fields fan? And I think her other fantasy books (A King So Cold, A Stray Prince and the The Savage and the Swan) are all 5⭐️ reads!

This one feels like more smut than plot? Which I know some of us don’t mind but I think I needed a little more!

Fia Callula is a faerie princess without much responsibility. As the niece of the king, she’s a spoiled seelie royal at the castle. She’s kind and a bit naive, and tries to see the good in others. This includes the unseelie Prince she stumbles upon in her family’s dungeon. She forms a friendship with the prisoner, and learns too late that this beautiful, gentle, fascinating stranger is actually a monster. After she helps him escape she feels like a fool, but is also labeled a traitor to the crown. In the blink of an eye her entire life changes when she’s so easily discarded by those she trusted. She quickly learns she can only ever depend on herself as she’s trying to survive. Soon she must accept her new reality as the prince’s betrothed. Two kingdoms were to be united in marriage, and her future is uncertain. When Colvin is near he unnerves and confuses her. The people of Eldorn were thought to be powerful and dangerous, but nothing is as it seems. When she finally surrenders to her fate will she get everything she never knew she needed?

I had to admit, i really had a high exceptations since the moment I heard of this book but it kind of disappointed me. I'm usually sucker for Seelie and Unseelie courts but that doesn't mean i should like every book in that trope so i was sad to say this. I tried to grasp my mind around the story but it's not for me apparently. I've to say that i enjoyed moments here and there and yeah, romance amd tension as well. The spicy scenes are worth it when you make out with your love and did he speak dirty ? Oh fuck yeah. I know. Like i said, some moments are worth it but not the story. It was very slow pace at first few chapters and kind of boring. You will get interest in the middle only to get bored again.

*signs*

I'm not giving negative reviews or something. It's just my thoughts and emotions. I might finish this book later in the future. But i still would recommend this book if you are looking for a quick standalone, dark fantasy romance with steam worthy.

~ Enemies to lovers
~ Slow burn
~ Seelie and Unseelie courts
~ Seelie Princess and Unseelie Prince
~ Court intrigue
~ Political drama
~ Dragons
~ Spicy and swoon worthy romance
~ Fated mates
~ Hurt / Comfort
~ Betrayal
~ Cottage in the woods

It was an alluring story filled with intrigue, magic, and unexpected alliances. The narrative revolves around Fia, an unruly fae princess, and Colvin, the inscrutable Unseelie prince, as they navigate a world fraught with danger, deception, and desires. From the outset, I felt a magnetic pull to the story and became invested in the characters and their fates.
Fia emerges as a strong, brave, and intelligent protagonist, while Colvin adds layers of complexity with his tortured past and moments of both sweetness and terror. The palpable chemistry between them provides a magnetic force that propels the story forward.
However, I felt that the author got carried away with the romance, temporarily sidelining the plot and slightly faltering the pacing for a while. Nonetheless, it remains an entertaining read with multidimensional characters, and I adore the magnetic connection between Fia and Colvin. I would give it four stars.

I enjoyed this.
I felt it became more about the sex than the story towards the end.

Spoilers.
During separation.
They meet, she releases him from prison.
He kisses her.
Spoilers.
He knows she is his life mate, she doesn't. She does feel something for him, a suspicion but he doesn't say he will return and she has no reason to believe she will see him again.
She also has heard rumours that he has a harem, so when he goes home she has every reason to think he will return to his life.

When he returns home, he releases everyone from the harem, knowing he has now found his mate.
He struggles with the idea that to claim her she will leave everything she knows, so delays.

In the time of separation, I think its 3 months, she gets closer to her best friend who is interested in her, its vague but I got the impression they 'fooled' around. No details.

Later it is mentioned they did have sex.

There is other woman drama and other man drama, no interest from the Hero or heroine in anyone else.

HEA.
Epilogue. 12 years later.

Now that I’ve slept and been able to gather my thoughts let me write a more coherent review: reading in 2022 has been hard, I hadn’t had a book that wows me- shocks me- makes me squeal in a long time. And trust me I’ve tried all the popular books on booktok but idk it’s not working for me, I picked this one up randomly because I loved Savage and The Swan by this author but I am not a fantasy romance girly ~ I just don’t find myself running towards it but let me tell you: if Ella fields writes it, I’ll read.

This was STUNNING. Fated mates, enemies to lovers, a dragon, a girl, a Khal Drogo X Kahlessi retelling that we all so desperately needed. I am weak for both the main characters- a strong yet gentle hearted princess, a prince who holds a dark secret forced to be in an union to bring the kingdoms together.

And holy shit the SPICE???? next level goodness.

I could’ve stayed in this world forever, I quite literally devoured this in one sitting.

Will not stop thinking and trying to shove this down everyone’s throat.

As always, I aim to give an honest opinion.

I believe Kingdom of Villains suffers from the ‘KBB effect’; the premise is fascinating, but the execution left something to be desired. I kept asking myself “what is going on” while reading this standalone romantasy. The worldbuilding was muddled, often feeling disjointed or in need of more detail. The pacing also complicated things, rushing the story as some parts while unnecessarily dragging in others.

Still, there is so much goodness within the pages of this book.

Where Kingdom of Villains shines is the characters. Even when I was lost, confused, and unsure of the plot, I found myself desperate to follow FMC and MMC’s story. The book starts out as a single POV from FMC Fia, but soon incorporates Colvin, the morally grey love interest. Their relationship is inviting, drawing you in with genuine enemies to lovers angst, a mild love triangle, arranged marriage, fated mates, and more. The smoldering tension and pure heat radiating off the characters is what really pushes this story over the edge. The smut is hot and frequent, yet never feels out of place. You’ll find yourself rooting for these two, despite all the actors conspiring against them.

If you want a standalone, true enemies to lovers tale that is 18+ and filled to the brim with tropes, download Kingdom of Villains. At its core, the book is a true love story featuring the perfect HEA. While the plot may leave something to be desired, the romance was worth it and so so satisfying.

another amazing Ella Fields romance fantasy! Also not as dark as some of her other work, so great for people wanting an easy fantasy standalone without too much trauma.

This was a waste of time. If I had a dollar for every time I rolled my eyes reading this, I could buy myself a nice steak dinner.

It reads like a Wattpad story, where the author is trying to throw in every fantasy romance trope she can think of. The result is a cringey, unfocused mess. The word choice is often really weird and out of place too, it feels like a thesaurus was used heavily during the writing process, but the author didn’t entirely pay attention to the actual connotations of the words she was using. A lot of the imagery is so strange and hard to follow; the monsters are impossible for me to imagine based on the descriptions, and the characters’ wardrobe sounds horrific lol. Also, I’m still looking for the plot - what plot there was could have easily been condensed into a novella, rather than putting readers through 326 pages of…whatever this was.

3 stars ⭐️ I struggled here. TRULY. Cause normally I like Ella Fields’ fantasy novels. But this one felt so messy. Like what exactly was the plot? And I have to admit I didn’t really feel the chemistry between the two main characters until the end. And dare I say there was a few too many spicy scenes?! I feel like it was trying to detract from the fact that there was no plot. Sigh. The world building was good- which I respect cause that can be hard to do in a stand-alone but yeah. Something about this just felt lacking

Looking for a quick, easy read that is a stand-alone? Look no further. This book is the perfect palate cleanser. Fae, fated mates, dragons, dark hair hero, feisty heroine, banter, monstrous creatures, and spice!! This is mostly a character driven book. Not too much action.

I haven't read a fantasy story where I have been consumed for days like I have been reading Ella Fields' Kingdom of Villains . Firstly, before anything can be said about the story itself, it should be known that Fields' writing itself is simply breathtaking. I felt transported into this world of the Seelie and Unseelie from the very first page. There were times I had to pause reading and just take a moment to take in how beautiful the prose actually was. This story made me swoon and fall in love with Fia and Colvin. It was filled with amazing banter and passion and just the magical touch that Fields' stories always have!

Overall, Fia and Colvin and their story was nothing short of exceptional. I loved every word and seriously was obsessed from the first page. Honestly, consumed is a better word. In addition, I NEVER go in blind and lord I think I was MORE obsessed with the story because of it. I won't spoil the story as I feel everyone deserves to squeal and scream in excitement when you figure out exactly who and what you are reading about, but trust me, this story will rock your entire world and leave you breathless. Kingdom of Villains is my first fantasy novel by this author as I have only read her NA/Bully romances but it is mindblowingly amazing!! I hope she writes more books like this in the future!! 5 stars! ~Ratula ❤️
