I would have loved this book as a child. I was fascinated by history, and this book provides it in a very neat package. Each "story" goes back two generations, with a grandparent explaining what it was like "when I was young." At the end, there are some brief explanations of life in the time periods of the stories. It's a great, simple, introduction to social history.

The illustrations are bright, and incorporate detail in costuming and setting.
