always in tandem #2

One day, Georgie has an entire non-hockey related conversation with Robbie, and it doesn’t hurt once.

It’s funny how much more it hurts when he realizes that the pain’s only been delayed, magnified after the fact.

Pregnancy scares. Multiple children. Marriage to people that are not the love of their lives. This one was a clusterfuck(not derogatory).

On one hand, I get it. I do. Because there was so much anger when we left these two that it wasn't feasible they'd get back together immediately. But we left them at 24/25. And this one spans till they're 34/35.

So a decade, give or take. And they still can't figure shit out. Avoiding, as always. To be fair, maybe they thought they'd moved on. I wanted to tag this 'fated mates' for the sheer inability these two have to stay out of each other's lives.

Also, I think making the first half of this Georgie's POV was a miss for me. I don't like him. I don't want to be in his head and seeing things from his perspective changed nothing for me in regard to his lying cheating ways.

I didn't like this one as much as the first for obvious reasons. They're not even in each other's lives for the first half and while that changes in the second half, they're not together or even working towards it by the end.

I wouldn't even say they're friends by the end of this, though they're working towards it.

Well. Working towards being friends while the wife works on saving her marriage 💀

Which is a lost cause and she should know that but she's welcome to try. Got married to a man she KNEW was in love with his teammate and hoped that what? It would magically go away?

Lol. Even when these two are apart for decades, they're in love. Even when they don't speak for years, they're on each other's minds constantly. I don't know how you place yourself in the middle of that and hope for the best.

Your opponent is not even on the board FOR A DECADE and he's whooping your ass? Pack it up.

My only issue is that the HEA may come when they're 60, at the rate they're going.

August 2025 update — after so much pain and sadness through the other arcs, it looks like this last arc is going in the right direction :)

jesus. christ. goodreads needs to extend its rating scale because every single thing i read by taylor fitzpatrick blows me clean out of the water. still always in tandem feels like i’ve been stuck with a dagger slowly twisting inside of me.

the character work in ycmal series is impeccable. truly. i can’t even begin to express how raw these characters feel and how much they’ve come to mean to me. still always in tandem starts from where but always in tandem leaves off, but this time, we're in georgie's head. it doesn't make it any easier. where robbie is angry, georgie is penitent to the point of self-flagellation, and so skilled at lying to himself you don't see the cracks in the wallpaper until it floods. so: i thought bait was painful. sait is, somehow, even more so. robbie's depression is angry, pushed outwards, seeping through every word, but georgie's is an expanse of nothing. georgie's is an absence, the lack of happiness, even though in this arc, georgie gets it all (but not the one thing he truly wants).

title like always in tandem, and you're gonna expect the paralells.

Came to this late. Not sure how it works with the other fic. Both pov?

Anyway, every time I read a chapter, I would ponder for days. Somehow this pair really gets to me, and not necessarily in the best ways

11/19/2024: The way this story has me in such an absolute chokehold. How is this all going to settle out I am on the edge of my seat.
1/22/2025: It’s the hope that fucking kills you (fulcrum).

In my head, I hadn’t read any of this before. Avowed avoider of works-in-progress, when I initially read but always in tandem I’d decided I’d stop at the end of that arc and wait for the next to be completed before going on. But the actual end of that arc is when the primary POV switches from Robbie to Georgie, and I had in fact read on until the end of what I’ll call “the Caps arc” which is about 30% of the way into this one.

This is one of those sad (but in a good way) kind of books. I knew going in it wasn’t going to end with a happily ever after, but I didn’t expect it to end how and where it did, and now I’m like god damn it, when’s she coming back to this? (A few months if things go to plan, it seems.)

I might just have to start following the next part as she releases it, chapter by chapter. :/

It's 2 am bc I couldn't stop reading. Everything about this part of their story was so bittersweet. And I loved it a lot.

Haven't really sorted my thoughts out fully but at the end of it there was a link with the authors musings about a third installment - and about tragedies. And those words were as haunting and beautiful and bittersweet as all of SAIT and I'm genuinely looking forward to the last arch of this story. Bc I've grown really fond of all the characters.

20% in progress update.

As the author said, Georgie is probably the most divisive character in the YCMAL universe. I don't hate George - as a matter of fact, at the end of the previous book, I understood him. Cheating obviously was really bad, and Georgie could have done so many things differently in that situation. But that mistake, however fucked up it was and however severe the consequences (for both Robbie and Georgie), does not make him a bad person. He did a bad thing when he was going through a very tough period.

So I came into this book not resenting at all that the main POV will be from Georgie, at least initially. And for the first 10% of the book, I did enjoy reading how much Georgie was still craving Robbie, how much he was hurting from Robbie dating around (Georgie deserved it.) But honestly so far the book has been a slog otherwise, and I can't pinpoint the reason.

- It could be that Georgie's POV was not fun (vs Robbie was such a fun narrator.) But David was not a fun character but I enjoyed the BTT trilogy tremendously.
- It could be due to the story. The first part of the book covers YEARS.
- It could also be that, seeing Georgie genuinely falling for someone else, someone not even that likeable, make it hard to be emotionally invested. I get it - for the story to make sense, for the characters to grow, both Georgie and Robbie need to be with other people - but it still sucks to see Georgie falling in love and starting a family with someone else. BTT has Jake falling in love with someone else and temporarily cutting off contact with David; but that happened off screen so it hurt a lot less.

I love Taylor's writing and I love these characters. I wish it didn't take them so long to figure things out but at the same time I also love seeing their journey together over the years.
I'm once again annoyed that there is no HEA (or even HFN) at the end of this installment, but I am hopeful for where things are going in part three.

Last chapter came out today, but part three starting up this spring.

Do yourself a favour and read this series. It hurts like nothing else, but it’s so beautiful and so real, you’ll fall in love.
