From start to finish, this book simply grips the reader and never lets go. Cali is a superb heroine who is so easy to cheer for. Her crew of teammates would remind some of Lee, Sixx, Mars, and Neil. The world-building done by the author is impressive.
There are so many aspects to this world that it is a tribute to imagination. Edgy at times and full of suspense, this book will put you on the edge of your seat. After reading this, you may never think your mother is much of a problem.
Cali and Carson are wonderfully portrayed as siblings who don't look at life the same. If you love the flick Reign of Fire, you will enjoy dragons in a different way. Recommended to fans of rip-roaring adventure. A fantastic start to what should be a mega-successful book series. Highly recommend it to all who enjoy a great read!
I loved the Dragon's Back because it felt so familiar, full of trolls and dragons and heroes (or in this case, a heroine) on a hero’s journey, all taking place in a rich, magical world that fantasy readers like me feel like I've visited so many times.
But what was so delightful and engrossing about the book is that it also felt so fresh and original, like nothing I had ever read before. The main character, Cali, is a hero we've all seen before--the strong, silent type. But to see a female heroine actually BE the strong, silent type--an amazing warrior, strong in every way, a loner who doesn't seem to care about anyone but actually can't help but get sucked into the role of hero and saves a rag-tag group of misfits she's actually come to care about deeply--is amazing. She's not the strong-but-also-pretty heroine, she's not the overt-heroine-who-actually-comes-to-need-rescuing, she just IS the hero. It's crazy that in 2022 that is still such a surprising, delightful thing to encounter in a book, but it is.
And so much of the book is like that--it takes all of the conventions and tropes of fantasy and turns them around in ways you'd never expect but that makes the book just a joy to read. The undead drone army reminds me of Ready Player One, the necrofiends remind me of dementors in Harry Potter, the way the dragon is depicted reminds me of Tolkien. So much of the book brings together elements of other books I love but in a completely new and original way. And the characters are my favorite type--the kind that I get deeply, crazily attached to. Flosson in particular is a character who is hard to describe, but I just love him so, so much. The book is worth reading for him alone.
I can't recommend the book enough to people who are looking for a story that you won't be able to put down and once you finish reading, you'll be counting the days until the next book comes out. I know I am.
The Dragon’s back is such a breath of fresh air. It takes the usual fantasy tropes and turns them around so smoothly. There are so many fantasy elements that reminded me of Lord of the rings and even Mistborn but the author put a fresh spin on it. Let’s go over all the things I liked: Unlike typical YA Fantasies that have a strong female character, Cali is more of the silent strong type. She is not trying to prove that she is strong. She just IS. And she is fulfilling her purpose by reclaiming an object that will save everyone from Queen Morflava’s rule. Cali gave me major Throne of glass vibes too. And the interactions with other side characters like Sprittle, Rylancer, Mott kept the book from becoming monotonous. It is a riveting and intense read that keeps you on the edge sometimes. I especially liked the portion with Rylancer. He added a necessary spark to the story, right when it was most needed. And the total help-me-or-you’ll-regret-it thing that went on was intense. But on top of everything is Carson – Cali’s brother who is an enforcer for Morflava. The obvious moral dilemma of fighting family for the greater good trope but like I said, the author likes to put a fresh spin to things! It was a very interesting book and anyone who loves adventurous fantasy novels would like it.
For the most part, I highly enjoyed The Dragon's Back. It was a well-written fantasy story that deftly spun the female main character into the perfect heroine the world needed. A few parts reminded me of famous fantasy stories, specifically The Hobbit and Star Wars. While those parts were changed enough to be their own, they still made me cringe a bit at the apparent plot development.
I also felt the story seemed to gloss over the battles. Several times it was built up to be a major conflict only to suddenly come to an end in spectacular fashion. The most glaring of these miracle endings was the cataclysmic event that all the main characters, both good and bad, somehow survive.
That is the one major drawback to this story. Not a single character of consequence died. While it might be emotionally welcomed, it seems to me to be too unlikely with such momentous events occurring.
Overall I would still recommend it to fans of fantasy. It is a fresh take on some of the usual plots of the genre. I give it a 3 and 1/2 star rating.
I liked the book enough to read in 3 days (despite my cataract left eye). The plot in this book does have an even pace to it, however it has convenient 'gifts' to the protagonist throughout the first 3rd of the book. It makes it too easy for her to make it to plot points, but that is just my opinion. Otherwise, there is quite a bit of decent character building going on. The main climax is a lot more believable than most of the rest of the book. I liked the book and its originality. It leaves space for a lot more twists to be used in its sequel, and that is still something I like in my reading.
Left a lot of open ends to turn into the next books in this series
It seems the stages are set for the next books in this series. There were multiple main characters introduced and their own stories started to unfold. The storyline was easy to follow and there were several times when it started to pick up in character interactions but I inevitably felt like I was left hanging. I would have liked less environment detail and more narrative between the characters. I appreciate the serie's potential and will look forward to the next book.
