A quick trip before Christmas. Instead, I get the shock of my life. Do I face this new challenge or do what I’ve always done—run? Justin
I’m a therapist who helps people deal with grief. My life is fulfilling. So what if I’ve been single for years? I have the kids I counsel and co-workers I adore. Maybe I’m tired of going home to an empty house and not looking forward to another Christmas alone. But I’m not going to be taken in by some slick city guy who can’t wait to leave town. I’m not going to upend my life just because I’ve met the man of my dreams. Right?
This is an 85K, opposites-attract, instalove, mid-angst gay romance novel. Previously published in the charity anthology Secret Santa: A Romance Collection, the story has quadrupled in size with more love, laughs, and a touch of Christmas magic.
Gabbi lives in beautiful British Columbia where her fur baby chin-poo keeps her safe from the nasty neighborhood squirrels. Working for the government by day, she spends her early mornings writing contemporary, gay, sweet, and dark erotic BDSM romances. While she firmly believes in happy endings, she also believes in making her characters suffer before finding their true love. She also writes m/f romances as Gabbi Black.
A holiday romance with a heartwarming message. I enjoyed the way Stanley's character grows over the course of this story. Opening his heart isn't easy for Stanley, and Gabbi Grey delves inside this man to share his journey.
Michael Dean's performance brings this story to life.
an audiobook copy of Stanley's Christmas Redemption was provided to me for the purpose of my honest review, all opinions are my own
I’ve been very busy so lately I haven’t had as much time to devote to reading. It took me more than a week to get through this, but I enjoyed it for the most part.
Stanley did such a turn around in his thinking from the beginning of the story. The man who walked away from his partner at such a critical time, and never once tried to contact his stepbrother suddenly completely changes his life and takes on a nephew and a new lover. It was just a little much for me to accept.
However, I like the way Gabbi Grey writes. She knows how to make you care for her characters even if you don’t always understand them. I have to admit I loved the ending and even cried a few happy tears.
4.5 rounded up for the audio version narrated by Michael Dean.
This was more of an instalove story, but there was enough drama and real trauma involved that it was believable. I adored Angus, the orphan left to his unknown uncle.
This is a really lovely story about two men who are very different, thrown together in a terrible situation, and figuring out how to start a new life, together.
This story starts with heartbreak but brings out love in the end. Its all worth it though. While it is an instalove story, the nature of what the MCs are dealing with over the course of the book makes it feel not so fast.

A Gripping & Beautifully Heartfelt Story! Great Audible Listen🎧📚🎧
Stanley’s Christmas Redemption By: Gabbi Grey Narrated by: Michael Dean
Gabbi Grey pens another amazing novel, one that not only captivated my attention the entire book, but it tugged on my heartstrings too. She is a gifted author, her descriptive details bring you right alongside the characters, allowing you to experience everything they are seeing, thinking and feeling. The characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with, they are easy to care about too. Stanley Powers is pretty much set in his ways and in his life, so when he gets a phone call that his estranged half-brother, Hans, died unexpectedly, as his last living kin, it was up to him to settle his estate. He was not expecting what his estate entailed or that his brother had an eight-year-old son, Angus, and that he had made him his guardian in case anything happened to him. Stanley did not know what he was going to do with an eight-year-old boy but he went to Mission City and met with Justin Bridges, a therapist and grief counselor who had been working with Angus after he lost his mother to cancer and who Angus was staying with. Stanley never raised a kid and is in over his head, but Justin volunteered to help him, invited the two to stay with him while they plan on what to do next and make the arrangements for the funeral. Justin had a bond with Angus and wanted to be there for him as he familiarized himself with his new uncle. Justin felt an attraction to Stanley and Stanley felt it too, but figured he was too old for him and what would a twenty something want to do with a forty something year old. You could feel the emotions pour off the pages as these three navigating getting to know each other, dealing with their grief, a new situation, a new relationship, and the holidays. My heart went out to Angus, and all he was going thru, the uncertainty of his future and how he acted because of it. I thought it was great how Justin and Stanley handled everything regarding Angus. If only they could have handled what was going on between them a little better, it took them a while to figure that out. Stanley needed closure with his ex and finally got the courage to talk to Maddox, which went really well. I loved how everything played out in this beautifully written and beautifully plotted story with plenty of drama, heartfelt emotions, and a wonderful romance. Gabbi Grey, thank you for another amazing story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 And for the terrific narration, Michael Dean did a great job bringing these characters to life. He had a complete understanding of the characters he was portraying, giving each a voice that fit the character’s persona, sounding believable and just as I pictured the characters to sound. He set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and projected them into his performance. Michael Dean is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another great listen.
So we have Stanley who comes back to town because of the death of his half-brother & finds out that he has a nephew & that he has been named guardian. Needless to say, he is blown away by this as he hasn't spoken to his brother in many years. The story starts off around the holidays, but isn't really a holiday read IMO. My biggest issue with this story is the lack of communication between our MC's, especially when it came to their feelings & wants of each other. Justin is Angus' counselor who started seeing him when his mother died. Now that his dad has passed as well, things are not easy for Angus. I kind of expected more lashing out on the part of Angus since he is only 8 yrs old who & has lost both parents, in a relatively short period of time & is now faced with living with an uncle he has never met. Justin is such a sweetheart & totally adores Angus & would do anything for him. Stanley had never wanted children & that is one of the reasons why he left his partner who also lives in the same small town with his husband & children. Though our MC's are attracted to each other, they do not get together until towards the end of the book. We miss them as an actual couple, though Stanley is temporarily living with Justin. Michael Dean does a great job narrating this book, I always enjoy listening to him.
I rec'd an audio ARC from Gay Romance Reviews & this is my honest opinion.
I read this story as part of the Secret Santa Anthology and was intrigued to read it again as I enjoyed the short story of Stanley and Justin's journey and looked forward to it being lengthened into a novelette!
It was a heartfelt and endearing story about business man Stanley Powers finding his redemption in a sweet, intelligent boy, Angus, who needs so much love and his grief councilor Justin Bridges who is ready to give so much love to both Stanley and his nephew if he stays and builds a life with them in Mission City...
Stanley never wanted to be a family man and that is why he left his boyfriend Maddox and Mission City seven years ago but now he has returned to settle his estranged, deceased brother's affair's and take care of a nephew he never knew about... and this is where their journey to love and acceptance starts....
"I'd been redeemed by a little orphan boy and a generous man who'd seen right into my heart."
A sweet, steamy instant love story with an eight year old matchmaker!
Loved it!.

So despite not reading any books set in this town from the author, I really enjoyed this and it goes to show that it absolutely can be read as a standalone.
Stanley is in town because his brother died. His estranged half brother he barely knew. Stanley finds out that his brother left him sole custody over his 8year old son. The son Stan didn't know existed. Stanley was staunchly anti-kids for himself but after meeting Justin, the counselor 20 years younger and his nephew, he reconsiders.
Over the course of a week or two, Stan gets to know his nephew and really connects. He finds some peace in his brothers death and tries to let go of the guilt he has over not having a relationship with him. He and Justin dance around who will end up with guardianship and end up finally admitting they want to do it together.
This one does drag a bit in the middle and I would've liked to see more content after they figured their stuff out, but as a whole, I really enjoyed it. It's the perfect mix of heavy and fluffy and I'd recommend.
This is a holiday story filled with love, acceptance, and forgiveness. While there is the trauma of a lost parent, the two adults are there to support the child as he needs it, and more importantly, to support one another as Stanley has to learn to take on the role of father, especially when he never wanted a family to begin with. Stanley’s own relationship with his father was toxic, and the last thing he ever wanted was to continue that legacy. But with Angus, it’s different. Angus makes him feel connected to his brother, makes him feel needed and wanted and — for all that they’ve just met — loved. And Angus is an easy child to love back.
When 47 year old Stanley gets a call telling him that the half brother he hasn’t seen in thirty years has unexpectedly passed, he makes the trip to the small town he thought he’d left behind forever to settle his brother’s affairs. When one of those ‘affairs’ turns out to require a life changing choice on his part, he is conflicted to say the least. This is an emotional read/listen, and I loved every minute of it. Stanley must confront his past relationship, which ended badly -- yes… this is the infamous Stanley who left his then boyfriend Maddox high and dry in Ginger Snapping All the Way. He must also consider a future he never imagined wanting for himself when he meets Justin, a therapist working on behalf of his late brother. Against the backdrop of a white Christmas in Canada, catharsis and the beginnings of soul-healing make for a story you can’t put down/stop listening to. Narration by the amazing Michael Dean is the Christmas tree topper here, not to be missed! Warning: Grinches may find their hearts grow three sizes during the course of reading this story.
Stanley Christmas Redemption: I liked the way Stanley's story went and it was a second chance at life and not all work. He might not have seen his half-brother for a long time but Hans knew what he was doing when he left his estate and son to Stanley. Stanley had no clue what Hans had been up to since they were not close but he went back to Misson City to take care of his estate. It was hard for Stanley to go back after being away. Then, another surprise sprung on him, but Stanley agreed to meet the gentlemen. He was not expecting the gentlemen to be good-looking. Justin wasn't sure about Stanley but then they got to talking and they were enjoying his company. it was truly a great story bond and love. Gabbi Grey really did a great job of writing and telling this story.
This is what I call a palate cleanser. I usually read books with either lots of angst or lots of suspense so, now and then, I need some sweet, straightforward story to clear my head.
This book is like that, nothing too complicated, with just enough drama to avoid being overly fluffy; add to that a cute kid in need of love and comfort and you have a nice, soothing story.
The romance, too, is simple and uncomplicated and the cherry on top is an ex who, for once, isn't a psycho *laughs*
My main complaint is the narrator. Michael Dean range is very limited, his voices are all similar, and, at least for me, his narration is boring.
Beautifully written story with strong realistic characters in Stanley and Justin. It's a Christmas romance that happens when Stanley is put in charge of his eight year old nephew, Angus. The author takes you on a sweet family's journey toward their HEA. The story moves fluidly and is a great read. Loved it !!

Stanley’s Christmas is spoiled when he is notified that his estranged half brother has passed away. Stanley reluctantly returns to his former home town to quickly settle his half-brother’s affairs and return home. Upon arriving Stanley learns that he has a nephew, Angus that his half-brother has left in his care. He initially meets with Justin, Angus’s counselor and is instantly attracted to him. Justin invites Stanley and Angus to spend the Christmas holidays with him at his townhome until the step brother’s funeral. This will give Stanley time to determine what he wants to do, and Justin to evaluate if Stanley is a suitable guardian for Angus. The sparks fly under the radar as Stanley learns to appreciate his newly found nephew with Justin’s constant support and feedback. Stanley slowly makes a decision about Angus and as the sparks with Justin ignite, he must also decide if he wants a future with Justin. There is quite a bit of ground covered in a very short period of time. The emotional aspects are handled well and the “insta-love” between Stanley and Justin feels possible, not some far fetched aspect of the story. Excellent character development and tightly woven storyline, and even a little Christmas Magic thrown in.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a super sweet Christmas Time Romance. Justin is a wonderful and caring guy who is so dedicated to taking care of others he seems to not realize how lonely he really is. Then he meets Stanley who is the uncle of his young patient Angus who already lost his mom and has now just lost his dad. Stanly has been living the high life in the city and now he needs to make decisions about his life and his nephew Angus. Even though these two are quite opposite the story still brings the together beautifully in an instalove situation as they both realize what they have really been missing in their lives. They balance each other out and they both love and adore Angus! The story is actually a full-length Christmas novel with all the feels! *** Adding my audible thoughts as I enjoyed this even more on Audible - Michael Dean did a fantastic job with this narration! He really especially brought to life young Angus who has lost both of his parents. My favorite thing about this book was how Angus as Stan's nephew was as big a part of this journey as both Stan and Justin. We get to know Angus, all his feelings and emotions. This story was more than just a romance, it was an entire family experience in grief, love and happiness
Book 2 - Stanley's Christmas Redemption - 3 stars - 9/9/23 Book 3 - Page against the Machine - 3 stars - 10/16/23 Book 3.5 The Lightkeeper's Love Affair - 2 stars - 10/14/23
Holy rollercoasters! I really wondered how the author was going to redeem Stanley after introducing him in Ginger Snapping All the Way. The man sounded beyond self-centered and at the beginning of his story, Stanley proved every bad assumption I had about him accurate. Actually having to face his young nephew and his counselor he isn't quite so sure about washing his hands of the boy. Quite quickly you see the wall he's built to keep everyone out crumble and for both Justin and Angus to work their way into Stanley's heart. I loved that, even though he openly kept admitting to not knowing what he was doing, he keep seeking help and consistently put his nephew's best interest above his own. I'm hoping to see more of these guys.
It’s Christmas Eve and Stanley finds himself back in a town he thought he’d never be in again after leaving his ex.
It’s Christmas Eve and Stanley finds himself back in a town he thought he’d never be in again after leaving his ex. But a call that his half brother has died brings him back to find he is left as guardian to an 8 year old nephew he didn’t know he had. Justin has been Angus councilor at healing Horse ranch since his mother died hense becoming friends with Hans, Angus’ dad. He was very close to Angus. Justin and Stanley become close quickly helping Angus get through the agonizing days before the funeral, but when it’s over will Stanley ho back to his high powered life in Vancouver since he never wanted children?
Oh my, what a lovely story. Yes it’s very high in angst as poor 8 year old Angus has lost two parents and Stanley his half brother and struggling with not reconnecting with him when they were ripped apart as kids. Also with Justin wanting Angus and worrying what will happen. But there is so many heartwarming, beautiful moments snd a very happy ending. So why did I give it a 4 for story? I had a burning question if Stanley lived there so many years with his ex, how did he not know his brother was there, never met Justin, and not know he had a nephew or any of the other characters besides his ex. Having said that… I absolutely swooned over this story and really didn’t notice that until I finished the book and it hit me. The narration is great. It’s soothing, there are two voices just enough distinction between characters, Angus voice is cute and not silly, and the emotions come through.
If you like a great age gap, angst with an HEA, lots of feels, and Christmas anytime you will love this! Highly recommend this! to an 8 year old nephew he didn’t know he had. Stanley is the ex of Maddox who was an MC in Ginger Snapping All the Way. Yes. THAT ex. Stanley returns to town bc his brother died and left him custody of his son Angus, when Stanley goes to meet him Stanley meets Angus's counselor Justin first.
Stanley kind of seems like a lost soul who's so rooted in his routine that he's kind of not had the chance to stop and look around to see if there's anything more he wanted from life for a long while until his brother died and he returns to his hometown for Angus.
Justin dedicates his life to helping people at healing horses ranch where he has a seemingly fulfilling life with his coworkers, clients, and friends. But he is lacking a partner to share his life with.
Angus is the one who steals this whole book for me. Angus mother died around 3 years before bit had a loving, caring, awesome father. Then one day Angus wakes up and finds his Dad dead. This is understandably very hard time for Angus. Justin has been his counselor since his mom died and was already quite attached to Angus. Because it's the holidays and waiting for the funeral Justin decides it would be best if Angus and Stanley stay at Justin's house until things can be sorted out and simultaneously being able to help Angus mental state and help Stanley navigating his new parenthood. This is where Justin and Stanley's attraction begins.
Angus is by far my favorite character this kid will break your heart and melt it all at the same time. Stanley doesn't really redeem himself in my eyes for what he's done to Maddox but it definitely shows that he's not the same person that he was back then. Justin however is a little pushy for me he's also the definition of a helicopter parent. I had issues with Justin seemingly popping up and injecting himself in every private moment Stanley and Angus shared. And although I understand that it came from trying to convey Justin's insecurities and fears when it came to his feelings about Stanley and that he might lose all ties to Angus, I feel like Justin got upset about the weirdest things but no romance book would be complete without a MC failing to communicate something to the other.
Even though I didn't like this book nearly as much as Ginger Snapping all the Way I'm still giving this book five stars because overall I just love Stanley and Angus so much that I was able to overlook all the issues I had with Justin's character. Justin isn't a a bad character though just one I didn't vibe with.
Stanley's (47) life changes dramatically when the decidedly non-family man learns he's now the legal guardian of his deceased estranged brother's young son Angus, then meets the boy's counselor Justin (27).
Stanley is gruff, a bit of a misery at first, and working through a whole lot of repressed feelings and past regrets. Justin is a compassionate sweetheart and feels very protective of Angus's welfare. Their story centers around working together to give Angus stability and emotional support as they all work through their grief and form an insta-family.
Justin and Angus are likeable characters, and while I never really warmed to Stanley, getting his POV about why he abruptly broke things off with his ex (an MC in the author's "Ginger Snapping All the Way") was insightful and key to his 180-degree emotional turnaround. I also wasn't feeling the lightening fast insta-love feels between the men...it seemed to come out of nowhere and felt oddly placed right off the bat, whereas a slow-roll relationship build seemed more fitting given the other story elements at play.
Stanley was the bad guy in the author's "Ginger Snapping All the Way," where MC Maddox frequently mentions the a$$hat ex-boyfriend who abandoned him - hence Stanley's need for "Redemption" here. Reading "Ginger" beforehand isn't necessary since the important backstory elements are recounted here, but I'm curious why they aren't currently being listed or promoted as an interconnected series.
Narrator Michael Dean delivers another good performance overall, and his voice for eight-year-old Angus is especially convincing. I noticed a time or two where random passages must've been recorded at a different time, though, because the sound quality was noticeably off and a bit jarring.
Given the title, it's also worth noting this isn't really a Christmassy romance in the sense it contains a lot of festive themes or centers around the season...it's more that the holiday coincides with the story timeline. I received this free review copy audio book by request and have left this honest review voluntarily.
Stanley and Justin's first conversation was super weird. It seemed clear that Stanley wanted nothing to do with being Angus' guardian yet somehow he agrees to staying the night with Justin to spend time around the kid? There wasn't anything particularly convincing in Justin's statements that would lead me to believe that he was successful in making a strong emotional argument to change Stanley's mind since all they talked about was: - What Angus would need from Stanley (aka love, support) to which Stanley explicitly mentioned that he was unable/unwillinh to provide given that was literally what he broke up with Maddox over - Justin randomly bringing up Stanley's prior relationship and Stanley giving him the details to an incredibly personal part of his life when he explained why he broke up with Maddox (which I didn't understand given Justin was a stranger who didn't need to know Stanley's motivations for doing something he was apparently ashamed of)
If there had been a shift somewhere in the convo, (perhaps Justin's repetition that Angus needed someone) we should've seen the scene from Stanley's POV to see his internal thoughts as opposed to seeing it from Justin's POV where it looks like Stanley just went from "No way am I taking care of this kid" to "Ok, let's see" without anything truly convincing being said.
I called it when Stanley was generally acting nice to Angus, even leaning in 'conspiriatorially" and playing around with him. That wouldn't normally be an issue, but the book had so strongly emphasized that Stanley wanted nothing to do with raising a kid so him even being cordial to the one he's being convinced to take guardianship of was not supposed to be this easy. Also, Angus pointing out Justin and Stanley should just kiss was weird and felt like dialogue much too old for a kid who was supposedly still grieving the death of his father (aka he should've been sadder and less focused on other people).
4/5 I really liked the way seeing how events unfolded from Stanley’s POV with his ex Maddox immediately made him more understandable—still not correct, but not 100% wrong, either. (Just with dumb timing and a lack of communication that I don’t think did them any favours.) I actually liked Stanley, for the most part, as well as Justin and Angus, but I did find his about-face about children a little abrupt. (That being said, it does seem more plausible if you suppose that rather than actually not wanting children, he’d convinced himself he didn’t because of his own terrible upbringing. Confronted with a child he has a compelling reason to take care of, those walls start crumbling.)
There’s a lot about grief and trauma here, and I thought that was dealt with well, along with light-hearted moments like sledding and hit chocolate and Tiffany the dog to not more rhe reader in 100% sadness. I liked when Stanley and Justin worked together for Angus. I thought the instalust/love was relatively convincing but the relationship might have been even more compelling if it had taken place over a longer period of time. (With the set-up of Stanley and Angus staying with Justin until the funeral, though, I can see why the author went time-limited instead.)
Justin mostly behaves maturely and like the counsellor he is, but he occasionally communicated very poorly (which is perhaps very human, never mind what our training tells us, lol). I enjoyed visiting the Healing Horse Ranch again and seeing this new family flourish. I also liked our little glimpses of Maddox and Ravi and the twins. It was great to see them doing so well and everyone leaving the past in the past.
Michael Dean did an excellent job narrating. Now I’m off to book 3!
I received a copy of this audio from the author. This is my honest review.
This book is such a great follow up to Ginger Snapping All The Way. Stanley was not the man of the hour there, having left Maddox in his hour of need. This time, Stanley steps up to the plate after finding out his half brother died and he has left Stanley as guardian to his eight-year-old nephew. Considering kids has never been in his life plans, it's a huge shock but in steps Justin, Angus's counselor and friend of the family. There is an instant spark between the two but they both focus on the most important thing, Angus and his grief. They work well together and, though it's only a short space of time, they grow close and create quite a strong bond. It's also a story of redemption for Stanley after how things ended with Maddox. It's great seeing this other side to a character after the way they are perceived as the bad guy. He's just as deserving of love and happiness though he doesn't feel as if he deserves it. Justin is someone who hopes for a family of his own, hopefully with several children. They had very different plans for their separate futures but now, with becoming so close over their care for Angus and looking after each other, they become entwined. This is quite an emotional and heartwarming story. My heart absolutely broke for Angus and what he's been through but both Justin and Stanley show that love and support can help to get you through the hard times. Michael Dean's narration is, again, fantastic. The emotion came through strongly for all characters and I really felt a part of their story. The only issue I had was that there were several occasions where I could clearly hear when words or a sentence had been replaced with the voice sounding slightly different - lighter, quieter etc.
I loved reading this story filled with love and compassion. Enjoy!
*** Reviewing "STANLEY'S CHRISTMAS REDEMPTION" *** Stanley Powers thinks he finally has his life figured out and is satisfied, but he is about to have a major decision to make that could turn his life around. When his younger half-brother Hans dies unexpectedly and there is no other family member left to step in, he has to return to their hometown of Mission City to settle the estate. He was expecting a quick trip to do what needs to be done, then leave, heading back to Vancouver to his adults-only high-rise as soon as possible. Instead he meets a counselor/therapist named Justin Bridges who helps people through their grief. It seems that both Stanley and Justin are attracted to each other, but both decide not to act on it because of the complications. Stanley will be leaving. But Stanley hadn’t known Hans had a son and named Stanley guardian of his 8-year-old nephew, Angus Braun, who needs someone permanent in his life now. Can he give up the city and make a new family instead right here in his hometown with the man he could very easily love?
I really liked this story where life-altering circumstances made drastic changes in the characters’ lives. For Stanley, I think it made all the difference. Despite his satisfaction with his life, he was missing so much that mattered. Will he make the right decisions? This is a crossroads for him. Will he take a chance on love and family? Will he accept the Christmas Miracle being offered to him? Or will he return to an empty life alone?
This story is inspirational and I adored the characters, including their therapy dog. Watching the relationships that formed and how the care and love was so healing put tears in my eyes several times.
Stanley’s Christmas Redemption is a standalone story but Stanley was a secondary character in Ginger Snapping All the Way. In Stanley’s Christmas Redemption the author does a great job of letting you know why Stanley needs redemption but reading Ginger Snapping All the Way may make it hit home even more and it’s a great book that I highly recommend.
Stanley left his ex-boyfriend and broke his heart and now he’s returned to the town where they lived together to settle his late half-brother’s affairs. He is shocked to learn that his brother named him as his son’s guardian; Stanley didn’t even know that he had a son. He meets Justin, who has been caring for Angus, Stanley’s nephew.
I can’t tell you how much I loved this story. Michael Dean’s audio performance was fantastic. He brought all of the characters to life and has easily distinguishable voices for each of them. I hadn’t read this book with my eyes before I listened to the audio so I was somewhat surprised at how much my emotions got involved. That doesn’t usually happen with an audiobook.
Stanley has no idea what to do with a child. Justin cares deeply for Angus and would love to keep him. The attraction between Stanley and Justin is pretty much instant but as they get to know each other better, and as Stanley gets to know Angus better, his viewpoint about taking custody of him begins to change.
I couldn’t stop listening to this one once I started. I wanted to get to the end but at the same time I didn’t really want it to end either. 😊 The epilogue was a perfect touch!
A copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author/narrator.
Such a sweet story! Stanley and his nephew Angus are grief-ridden through much of the book as Stanley's half-brother, who, he didn't know well at all, has died suddenly and left the care and guardianship of his son, Angus, to Stanley. Never mind the fact that Angus's mother died only two years before and it's easy to see the boy needs love. Justin, a counselor at Healing Horses ranch, is Angus's counselor from his time of losing his mother and he's willing to step up and take the boy if Stanley doesn't want him. But Stanley, who is the guy who deserted Maddox in another story from this author, surprises everyone when he takes the opportunity offered. It means leaving Vancouver and relocating so Angus can stay with his friends and schoolmates, but it also means he and Justin, who took one look at each other and heart eyes bloomed, can take the time to develop a relationship of their own.
TBH, the whole story flowed very well and the grief and parental loss were handled beautifully. And though Justin and Stanley did seem to have insta-love, it wasn't an in-your-face sex romp. At all. The author portrayed their coming together and eventual commitment beautifully as well.
I was hovering between 3 and 4 stars on this one (and TBH I think the cover model was not my cuppa and that kept pulling me down) but because I've already read book 3 and that was 5 stars and I enjoyed the whole series tremendously, This can be rounded to 4 stars. Plus, I've read other Mission City stories, including the one featuring Maddox and his now husband, Ravi, and enjoyed them all.
So bottom line? Don't hesitate to add this, and the others in the series, to your holiday wish list.
I’ve enjoyed the stories I’ve read by this author, so when I saw this book pop up I was curious how Stanley was going to be redeemed. I read the previous book, so I knew about his history—from Maddox’s POV. I’m a fan of redemption stories. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this one. I’m glad I listened to it, and I would probably listen to it again, but there were some things I questioned the legitimacy about—such as his reasons for leaving Maddox. Something just didn’t sit right about his explanation but I can’t put my finger on it.
My heart hurt for Angus. I know he wasn’t the main character, but this entire story was centered around him so it’s almost like he is. He went through so much.
I would recommend listening to the previous audiobook before this one. It’s possible not to, but I think you’d understand Stanley’s situation better if you do.
I was surprised to hear technical issues with MD’s performance in this audiobook. You can tell where he cut in to fix some things and it was distracting. It was throughout the entire audiobook—not just once or twice. That’s not something I’ve seen from him before.
All in all, this is a story worth listening to. It was great getting a look into Maddox’s and Ravi’s lives and seeing what they’re up to!
I did not get this book as an ARC unlike many others I have reviewed. I was thrilled as the story is low on angst, high on possibility and fulfilment.
The book opens with Stanley, having just arrived back in Mission City 7 years after leaving, finding out his half-brother has died and named him to be the guardian of Stanley's 8 year old nephew. The fellow (Justin) who is telling him is not the lawyer but the counsellor who was seeing both Angus (the nephew) and his father after the death of Angus' mother
Justin is drawn to Angus and because it is Christmas invites Stanley and Angus to stay at his place. Despite an age difference, Justin and Stanley are attracted to each other but Stanley is torn about leaving his life in Vancouver and taking on raising a child. To complicate matters Stanley had left Mission City and broke a long-term relationship while his partner was in the hospital. And further if Stanley and Justin become involved with each other, Justin will have to give up being Angus' counsellor.
Stanley and Justin undertake activities to help Angus relieve anxieties. Once Stanley makes up his mind to take Angus, he moves quickly to sell his condo in Vancouver, and buy a home on the same street as his ex-partner lives on. Justin is jealous that Stanley seems to be implying that Justin is being left out but there is a HEA and a great Epilogue.
