A provocative manifesto that teaches you how to take control of your own health, no matter your age or circumstances—from an innovative doctor and his philosopher daughter
“If you care about your health or the well-being of others, read this book.”—Ethan Kross, author of Chatter
Dr. Alex Jadad is the creator of the Jadad scale, which has become the world’s most widely used methodology to assess the quality of clinical trials, and his daughter Tamen Jadad-Garcia is a health entrepreneur and philosopher. Here they combine their expertise to uncover the medical system’s unstable foundations, which condemn you to be ill. The Jadads begin this exploration with a simple “What is health?”
Through engaging stories and case studies, the Jadads expand the understanding of health beyond the medical industrial complex. They show how distant connections in your personal networks can influence key aspects of yourself, like your weight, anxiety, and addictions; how reliance on medications can be reduced by intentionally designing the places where you live, work, and play; and how comparisons with peers can shorten your life.
In this practical guide, the meaning of health is redefined, putting you in the driver’s seat and recognizing you as the most effective evaluator. Building on data and experiences from millions of people around the world, the book reveals that a healthy life is possible even with complex chronic conditions or terminal illnesses. The Jadads explain why perceiving yourself as unhealthy might actually be fatal, and how you can monitor your true health and boost it in practically any context, no matter your cultural background or socioeconomic circumstances.
With wisdom and empathy, Healthy No Matter What teaches you how your natural gift of adaptability equips you to overcome any obstacle, provides actionable pointers, and shows how and when to use the medical system, so that you can thrive, regardless of the twists and turns life may take.
Started out really awesome. Lots of fascinating information, well supported with credible sources and peer reviewed studies. The last couple chapters were a "hurry up and wrap this up" hot mess express. And then it just randomly ended. While there was lots of awesome info, that info wasn't synthesized into any kind of actionable items/goals or advice for the reader. It was just an onslaught of tons of info.
While I fully applaud the intent with which this book is written, the execution came across as a multitude of open doors brought forward as breakthrough wisdom.
Shame, since I do think everyone has such incredible power to lead their own lives on a path of contentment. And it would be wonderful when that becomes reality.
An empowering manifesto for reclaiming control over one's health, regardless their age or life circumstances.

Key takeaways from ‘Healthy No Matter What’
1.Conventional definition of health sets unrealistic standards
The first chapter of the book delves into the flaws of the conventional definition of health, which requires complete freedom from disease and perfect physical, mental, and social well-being. This unrealistic definition makes it almost impossible for anyone to be considered healthy. The book introduces a fresh perspective, suggesting that health should be seen as an ability and adaptability to various situations and times. By redefining health in this way, the book empowers individuals to make better choices and navigate the complexities of healthcare effectively. It encourages us to embrace a more practical and inclusive approach to well-being, regardless of our health conditions or circumstances. Ultimately, it is a call to revolutionise how we perceive and pursue health in the modern world.
2.Adaptability allows us to thrive despite any challenges
The book emphasises that despite facing insurmountable challenges, it is possible to thrive and maintain positive health. Drawing from diverse examples, including survivors of war, natural disasters, and pandemics, the authors demonstrate the extraordinary adaptability inherent in humans. They reveal that adaptability is a powerful tool in dealing with adversity and that our ability to respond effectively to change is a key factor in maintaining overall well-being. The book encourages us to recognize our innate adaptability and use it to navigate life’s challenges, thereby fostering a sense of control and resilience in any situation.
3.By being a proactive patient, you are more likely to recover and acquire better health
The role of a ‘good patient’ has evolved over time, moving from a passive, compliant approach to a more active and collaborative role. Patients who actively participate in their healthcare decisions, ask questions, seek second opinions, and maintain good communication with healthcare providers tend to experience better outcomes. Being proactive in managing one’s health and treatment, as well as engaging in deprescribing when necessary, can lead to improved overall well-being and a higher quality of life. Additionally, focusing on end-of-life care and embracing a holistic approach to health can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life until the very end. By taking charge of our health, making informed decisions, and fostering open communication with healthcare professionals, we can enhance our experiences within the medical system and improve our chances of leading a healthy and fulfilling life.

Best quotes from ‘Healthy No Matter What’
“The ability of individuals or communities to adapt to the inevitable physical, mental, and social challenges faced throughout life.”
“What research on forest bathing tells us, consistently, is that this practice offers benefits that align with the reduction of our toxic stress load. Although the ideal amount of time appears to be 2 hours per month with expert guidance, it has been found that just standing in a forest setting for 15 minutes is enough to produce a significant reduction in anxiety when compared with the same amount of time spent watching a cityscape.”
“…90 percent of what people need to achieve or maintain positive health does not include medical interventions. However, on this occasion, lack of access to the healthcare system, even for those who did not have a medical problem, made it to the top five reasons given for negative levels of health.”

Rounded up from 3 1/2 stars. This is a book that has a lot of really interesting, great information but also is likely to really frustrate a lot of readers, especially those with chronic illness. I can't see how folks with chronic pain and illness would not come away with a little bit (at least) of bitterness, even though I do agree with pretty much everything the authors say.
It's a bit of a spiritual book even though it is firmly rooted in science. I think part of the reason for the odd feel of it is that it's written by a father-daughter team and he is a doctor and she is a "health entrepreneur and philosopher."
The authors write about all of the things that contribute to positive and negative health outcomes, from the ways bacteria can literally hijack our brains (fascinating stats there!) to the importance of green spaces (nature, even in our homes) to why hospitals are so damaging to how we are wired to adapt and heal. There's a big focus on staying healthy as opposed to treating disease, and how things like trusting our guts and surrounding ourselves with the right people and spaces can literally change our health.
The book ends abruptly halfway through, and the entire second half of the book is references. I appreciate references, but I wanted the book to continue with a better wrap up of how to assimilate all of their advice into healthy lifestyle changes. It almost felt as if they ran out of time and just did a quick recap and signed off. That said, the information is really, really interesting and I don't disagree with any of it.
I read a digital review copy of this book via NetGalley.
The title of this book is so promising, so I was disappointed when there seemed to be a heavy hand of fear-mongering stats throughout the book. Yes, there are some practical tools and ideas, but the book feels far from a cohesive thesis for “how humans are hardwired to adapt.” It’s worth the read and interesting in general, but I feel like what I was truly searching for has been found in other books that go a bit deeper - namely, “Heal Your Nervous System” by Dr. Passaler and “The Way Out” by Dr. Gordon. The Jadads even state their position that “chronic conditions are incurable” (page 156) and I disagree. I feel that they still approach this topic from a 1D perspective without accounting for mind-body syndromes and the role of the nervous system in healing and adapting. Again, an insightful book, just a bit limited in scope.
An excellent, well researched book that helps you understand and live a healthy and long life. Ask yourself three questions... 1. In general, how would you rate your health; excellent, very good, good, fair or poor? 2. Why do you consider your health to be at that level? 3. What do you need to maintain or improve your level of health? Read the chapters and learn about your TSL, your adaptibility, your gut instincts, the health care system and all other factors that can help you improve that level. The stories and case studies expand the understanding of health beyond the medical industrial complex.
"Healthy No Matter What" is a groundbreaking work that challenges our conventional beliefs about health. The authors' insightful guidance unveil the fragile foundations of the medical system, while inspiring readers to tap into their natural adaptability and overcome any obstacle. With its evocative and poetic prose, this book is a captivating and life-changing journey towards discovering the true essence of health for ourselves and our loved ones.
Read it and get health!...?...! Excellent, well researched, interesting scope. As a human your default is to be healthy. "Create a healthy persona" by behaving like a "Healthy person." Realistic Optimism is offered as a solution. By feeling strongly that you exist as a separate person the better you are able to control your behavior and understand the behavior of others. One could raise the point that it feels somewhat episodic, but was connected enough for my tastes.
• Thought this book was going to strictly talk about health and how to be “healthy no matter what,” but it really just dished out the medical field the entire time • The first chapter was the best, then I kept becoming more and more uninterested • Very well-written • Not the book I was hoping for when I bought it, but that’s okay! I learned a lot about my health outside the medical industrial complex
Lots of cool information about how to take control of your health and lean away from medicinal and hospital actions unless necessary. Only three stars because it is sooooo scientific you have to be really invested to take it all in.
This book is a masterpiece. It combines science, wisdom, and practical information to deliver a powerful message: you can be healthy no matter what. The authors give you the tools and the support you need to transform your health and extend your longevity.
