Malcolm Sutherland, cousin to Laird Haydon Sutherland has been offered the chance to marry the daughter of Laird Bryce Ross. To entice The Ross into allowing his daughter to marry his cousin, Haydon has agreed to give Malcolm a piece of Sutherland land.
Lady Christine Ross is Laird Bryce Ross's youngest daughter and her da is anxious get her out of the castle. Especially since Christine's brother recently married and the two young lasses do not get along.
Looking forward to marriage and a new life, Christine is shocked to discover upon her arrival at Dornoch Castle that her betrothed is a man she met at the Highland Games the year before. She remembered him as judgmental, cold, and arrogant. Malcolm cannot believe his bride-to-be is the flighty, irresponsible lass from the Highland Games.
My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.
I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.
I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.
Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.
Take a look around my website and check out some of the books I write, and their lovely covers. www.calliehutton.com
Malcolm Sutherland may well have found his new bride, Lady Christine Ross, vexatious in the extreme, but Christine quickly comes to the realization that her Highland groom needs some serious reeducation, given that he is bossy, autocratic, and demanding. Little did the conflicted newlyweds know just how well suited they were for one another. Christine grew up with very little supervision and has thus become strong-willed and independent, a trait that later serves her well. Her Highland Warrior is everything she could want in a man, and when needed most, he is there for her. There are humor and lighthearted moments in this romance, as well as some suspense as the novel winds to a close. Altogether, this book with its pretty cover is a standalone and comes to a happy and successful conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
What else could you want? This was a good story with a little bit of a mystery thrown in. The hero was a little bossy, and so was the heroine. But they loved each other. It was a marriage to forge an alliance but the definitely jived. She went to her dad after receiving a note that he's in danger and the hero followed later and there were a lot of shenanigans going on. Very good ending and I think this was close to a four star read. So I rounded up. Very short though but free in KU.
This is the forth book in Callie Hutton’s The Sutherland’s of Dornoch series. Malcolm our hero meets our heroine Christine at a tournament when she is chasing her dog, it does not go well with each thinking unfavorably of the other. Believing they won’t have occasion to see each other again they go their separate ways. Then a year later Malcolm agrees to an arranged marriage organized by his Laird Haydon to help strengthen the Sutherland Clan. You can imagine his shock when his bride walks into the room and is none other than the cheeky lass from the tournament. Christine also agrees to an arranged marriage by her Laird who also happens to be her father. As expected when two strong willed people are forced together this leads to some chaos and drama. An incident that forces Christine back to her childhood home leads to some danger that brings our couple together and admit their growing feelings for one another. A great story by Callie that has a bit of everything for the reader. Ultimately our couple find love and a happy ever after. This has been a very enjoyable series and I would recommend it to all.
I received and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest opinions and review.
Yaaayy finally the forth book of The Sutherlands of Dornoch Castle is here. To be frank I love this series so much because of its smitten heroes with the heroines and arranged marriage.
It’s a story of Malcolm, cousin of Haydon. Malcolm first encountered Christine when both attended a Highland Games. When Malcolm was enjoying the night alone, Christine’s dog came after Malcolm and Malcolm’s first impression of her was that irresponsible and reckless and he wished he wouldn’t marry that kind of lass. Unfortunately fate has its way, a contract between Sutherland and The Ross has been formed and they are reunited again a day before they are married and I loved their reactions. When they start the marriage life concern after concern falls upon Malcolm especially when he has to go to find reivers and leave Christine.
After all, the book is particularly pleasing and splendidly intriguing as Callie Hutton has always written the characters I want in a historical romance. Christine who is impulsive, intelligent and defiant has to deal with Malcolm, who is bossy, over protective as well as smitten with Christine from the beginning. Furthermore I loved how Callie Hutton put some twists in the book before it reached its happily-ever-after. Thank you, Callie Hutton, for the ARC which I voluntary reviewed.
Callie Hutton saved the best for last on this series. I laughed, cried, and thoroughly enjoyed this story. To have the snappy banter, the mystery, and family dynamics in this one was just outstanding.
Malcolm Sutherland, second in command and cousin to Laird Haydon. Dedicated, brawny, caring, and loyal. He is ready to settle down, hoping for a companion but also for love.
Christine Ross youngest daughter to Laird Ross is mischief personified. She is full of energy, caring, fun, and fiercely independent.
The angst that Christine gets herself into she believes Are minor and she can handle them. Now To have to answer to another is causing her problems.
To give more would ruin the book for you but you will have a great read in this book. Finding out how, who, and what is going on with the clan. The mystery and those developments, the fun, sarcastic banter, and the ending is to die for. Malcolm will have you in laughing tears!!
It’s time for Malcom Sutherland, cousin of the Laird of the Sutherland clan, to settle down and marry. He’s been given a piece of land and a comfortable cottage and the marriage with the daughter of a powerful ally has already been settled. Pity the bride is not the demure, biddable lady he would have liked, but the reckless and immature girl he met and bickered with some months before at the Highland Games! This series is getting better and better! The banter between the characters is a joy to read and the story is simple, but really entertaining. The touch of mystery and the presence of a villain are a wonderful addition to the mix. I found myself wanting to finish the book once started and I passed many an enjoyable hour traipsing in the Highlands with the characters of the book! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Malcolm Sutherland is cousin and second in command to the Laird. Malcolm is smart, crafty, strong (a braw Highlander), caring, and loyal to Haydon and the clan. Haydon has arranged a marriage between Malcolm and the youngest daughter of Laird Ross. Malcolm is looking forward to settling down with a sweet biddable wife. Christine Ross is feisty, independent, full of life and fun. This is a wonderful story to end this entertaining series. The characters, especially Malcolm and Christine, are awesome. There is snarky banter, a few domestic challenges, a problem with reivers to handle, and a rather dangerous mystery. Malcolm and Christine’s story makes you laugh and cry and holds your attention beginning to end. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the series.
I absolutely loved the characters and storyline so much. Christine and Malcolm were a great pair. I knew it was poison and I knew who was doing it. Paybacks a bit*h she got it good! Back to my Caroline Lee stories. 🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜

Will they sort out their differences to make it work…
None of the two heroes are really flawed, they just see things differently. From Malcom’s point of view, a woman is to be protected at all cost as she is easily taken advantage. He is a man of honor and never one to abuse of his strength when it is written in his DNA to protect the weakest. So upon realizing his new bride is the woman he found a year ago venturing alone, he is set on giving her boundaries to where she can go and how she must travel. Christine has grown a bit wild, the youngest daughter permitted to run into mischief and scrap. So she struggles with orders and limitations, not really prepared to see when she should retreat or not. Why they first clash but both are also mature enough to want to make their union work even if they have each their opinion of how it should work.
Lucky for them, their chemistry is over the top, helping them through the bedchamber’s games to quiet their discontent and learn to trust and like more and more the other. The mysterious illness offered to the plot a way for them to straighten their bond while they unravel it. 4.5 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
Barbara’s rating: 4 of 5 Stars Series: The Sutherlands of Dornoch Castle Publication Date: 6/17/21 Period: Medieval Scotland Number of Pages: 171
Can you imagine showing up to your wedding to a woman you’ve never met – only to find out – oops – you have met her – and you didn’t like her – and she feels the same way about you? That is the way the marriage of Malcolm Sutherland and Lady Christine Ross begins. Things have to look up from there because they are already at the bottom.
Neither Malcolm nor Christine had ever expected to marry for love, but they did want a spouse they could like and respect – but neither thinks they got what they’d wanted. Being pragmatic Scots, though, they were determined to at least make an amicable marriage of it. Goodness though, Malcolm certainly hoped his new wife didn’t hate bed sport.
Christine is constantly chafing at Malcolm’s over protectiveness. She’s headstrong and impulsive and he is constantly trying to get her to think before she acts and not to take off on her own. Christine feels as if he is locking her up and treating her like a child.
While Malcolm is away chasing down reivers, Christine gets word that her father is in danger and she immediately heads out for Ross lands to see what is going on. Yes, her impulsiveness has landed her right in the middle of trouble – again. Will she survive long enough to tell Malcolm she loves him?
This is a short, entertaining read with memorable characters and a villain who gets the appropriate punishment for their crime (YAY). It is well-written, nicely paced, and well-plotted. However, I hate loose ends and it was never made clear (or even hinted at) who wrote the note to Christine to get her to her father’s castle?
I can recommend this book and this series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoy this series! Callie Hutton does a great job of pulling you back in time and making you feel like you are there with the characters .
When Christine and Malcolm meet they are immediately annoyed with each other. And in their mind they admit an attraction to the other, so obviously they are shocked when months later they are introduced again when they are about to be married. I still shudder thinking of living that way. Just men deciding your fate like you were a horse. Meeting the man who you would live with till you died hours before a wedding.
Anyway, once they were married I could not figure out what the plot would be. Usually its a whole plot to get to the wedding. Obviously the whole plot was to get to love, but these two seemed pretty set in their ways. She was going to vex Malcolm to her dying day.
Then as Malcolm left to follow the bad guys, I thought this would be the plot. Maybe they would kidnap Christine? But before Malcolm could get home Christine receives a note that her Da was very sick. I've got to admit I felt stupid to not see this coming after how vindictive Sophie is at the start of the book. I honestly thought that was just a set up for Christine to be surprised by how much she enjoyed the marriage bed.
Then it practically turns into a mystery. Who is making the laird sick? How is it happening? I liked it quite a lot. Christine is head strong for good or bad. She never gives up.
After the climax of the story, I think I really must see what the plots are of the rest of the books. Does that play into another book? Another book series? It would be awesome if she used that to start another series.
The fourth in The Sutherlands of Dornoch Castle series To Vex a Highlander will hold your attention from the moment you begin the journey with Malcolm Sutherland, cousin to Laird Haydon Sutherland, is to marry Laird Bryce Ross's daughter, Lady Christine, until the very end! Sparks flew, verbally, when they meet a year ago and is re-ignited when they meet again a year later. Christine, a beautiful lass, is free spirited and impulsive and who will not be told what to do and Malcolm, one brawny Highlander, who is arrogant and overbearing and is very mixed up on how marriage actually works! But Christine is not afraid to let him know her thoughts on it. Their story unfolds from beginning to end with threads of intrigue, secrets, deceit, mystery and brings back the characters who found a place in your heart. Callie Hutton has written a story that's filled with characters that weave a story that will hold you spellbound as their individual personalities become more than just part of the tale they come off the pages and pull you in, with passion, snarky banter that will have you laughing and the plot brims with tension-building twists and turns. With setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid that brings this story to life and as the feelings escalates the suspense builds and danger abound which brings this read together perfectly!
To Vex a Highlander is the fourth book in this series, but it can be read as a standalone. This is a story of two unlikely people coming together and growing to love one another. This is Malcolm and Christine's story.
Malcolm Sutherland is a cousin to Laird Haydon Sutherland. He has been offered land in return for marrying the daughter of the neighboring Ross clan.
Lady Christine Ross is Laird Bryce Ross's youngest daughter and he is ready to have her married. She has been allowed to run free and be herself on his keep, but since his son married, there has been tension between Christine and her new sister-in-law.
Malcolm and Christine both seem to be looking forward to marriage and a new life, but when she arrives to meet her husband to be, they both discover they have already met. They immediately become hesitant, but the more time they spend together the closer they become. She begins to appreciate his ways and he begins to understand and come to accept her ways. It is a pleasure to read about their growing love. There is some mystery, tension, and a good story with easy to like characters. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I enjoyed this historical romance story with all of the characters. The two main characters were Lady Christine Ross and Malcolm Sutherland.
Lady Christine Ross is the youngest daughter to Bryce Ross. Her father is anxious to marry her off. So when her father finds someone she never expected it to be the man that she meet at the highland games that was a year ago.
Malcolm Sutherland is the cousin of Laird Haydon Sutherland. He has been offered the chance to marry the daughter of Laird Bryce Ross. He cousin has offered him some land if he will marry her. Malcolm is quite surprised when he meets the woman that he will marry.
I had fun reading the four book in the series of" The Sutherlands of Dornoch Castle". It can be read as a stand-alone. The book had action, drama, and mystery. It also had a few laughs and giggles within.
I received a complimentary copy via the author. This is my honest unbiased opinions.
I throughly enjoyed this book about the marriage between Malcolm and Christine.
Malcolm and Christine's marriage is brokered between his cousin Laird Haydon Sutherland and her father Laird Bryce Ross with land being offered as part of the contract. Laird Rossbis more than happy to broker a marriage that will allow his daughter to leave his home and distance herself from her sister-in-law whom she dislikes.
Their marriage is slightly fraught with ups and downs, however all this pales when a note detailing suspicions that her father the Laird my be bring poisoned send them back to her childhood home. Will Christine unearth the culprit or will she too succumb to their murderous intent. Will Malcolm and Christine realise that what they have is worth fighting for when life tries to pull them apart.

To Vex A Highlander is a fantastic historical romance by Callie Hutton. Ms. Hutton has once again impressed me with her storytelling abilities and he phenomenal characters. She has delivered a well-written book. Malcolm and Christine clashed at the Highland Games, imagine their surprise a year later when they found themselves betrothed to each other. Malcolm and Christine's story is packed with drama, humor, spice, action and suspense. I loved every page of this book and look forward to my next book by Callie Hutton. To Vex A Highlander is book 4 of The Sutherlands of Dornoch Castle Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It makes me sad to have this series end because this author has done such a good job of developing her characters that I ended up caring about each and every one of them.
Malcolm and Christine meet each other at the Highland Games and immediately fell into hate. Funny though how they kept thinking of each other as time went by. I think a couple of years go by and Christine's father arranges a marriage for her with the second in command of Laird Either land's fighting men, Malcolm. A few days before the wedding Christine and her father travel to meet her groom. When they are introduced, they both shout "You" and turn away. The marriage contract had been signed and there is no good reason to stop the wedding.
Christine is very independent and impetuous which leads her to take foolish chances. Malcolm knows it is his job to protect her but he has to find her first. Lots of action along with attempted murders occur.
Vexing is the operating word in this Highland story. High-Spirited and stubborn meet in an explosion of words and emotions. Malcolm and Christine's marriage is arranged and they don't meet before their wedding day or maybe they already have. Any way life with Christine is going to be a challenge for Malcolm, but he learns to actually start to enjoy being with his new passionate and vexing wife. This story has a mystery, lots of action and interesting relatives. The story is entertaining and kept alive, because of never knowing what Christine was going to do next.
Christine has a mind of her own and doesn't take to being given orders while Malcolm is protective and worries about her safety due to her not thinking first before acting. The combo makes for an interesting start to their marriage and a delightful story. Add in Christine's evil sister-by-marriage Sophie and you've an intriguing story with Christine in danger as she tries to solve the mystery. I highly recommend this book for romance, humor, intrigue, and a great HE A.
I started this book yesterday and couldn’t put it down! It is the 4 th book in the series, but can be read as a standalone. The story centers are Malcolm Sutherland, cousin to the current laird and Christine Ross. It is. N arranged marriage unbeknownst to both of them that they had already met and were slightly antagonistic to each other. Their rocky path to happiness is filled with a lot of yelling, illness and a mystery. Of course. All’s well that ends well. Quick but satisfying read.

If it wasn't bad enough for Lady Christine to have a confrontation with Malcolm, cousin of the laird at the Highland games, the following year she finds she's betrothed to him. Opposite in personality from rigid and controlling to her impulsive and flighty, he has difficulty overcoming her independence. However, upon facing danger and must depend on one another, they learn to compensate while falling in love. Entertaining Highland story with true-to-the-time dialect for your enjoyment.
I loved the way Callie wrapped up the Sutherlands of Dornoch Castle. It's Malcolm's turn to marry this time. There is definitely some mystery thrown in and of course it can't all be easy for Malcolm. If you enjoyed the other stories you will love this and you'll get to see how the others are doing now.
The plot and storyline was good although felt I was turning pages at times to move it along. I did not feel that the bedroom scenes were necessary as to the details of intimacy. The plot was good as were the characters being defined so those were unnecessary except to give in to the readers who want steamy scenes. I for one like a cleaner read
Did you ever meet someone and dislike them immediately? Well, dislike might not be a strong enough word for these two. One who is overprotective and one who's a free spirit , make for clashes every time! The case of her having no sense of danger adds triple stress to keeping her safe.
4.5* I really like Christine and Malcolm, they made for a fun couple. I always like when the hero’s idea of the perfect heroine is the exact opposite of what they get. I also like the suspense in this book but made for an intriguing story.
You can’t help but love this book since you see a trained highland warrior get matched with a stubborn, hardheaded, woman who hates to be told what she will and won’t do. The surprise mystery near the end of the story was a great addition! You’ll have to read it to see what I’m talking about!
I have enjoyed this book. I read the first books and was waiting for this one to come out. Malcolm and Christine had a few misunderstandings but love won out with a baby boy.
This book was funny and annoying. Christine was a lass who had been on the loose all her life. Coming and going around her family’s castle. Not a good thing for a very old fashioned minded, domineering husband. Hahaha the fight was on. Good book and a very good series.
