Only the desperate make deals with the powerful vampires who rule this city. But I’m all out of options.
Ambrose d’Vil is power and sin personified. His savage kingdom is filled with blood and violence. And he's my last hope.
Only Ambrose can save my best friend's life. But the vampire king demands a high price.
I’m his for the next three months. In a single moment my boring human life vanishes. He draws me into his dark and secret world of vampire lords, wicked delights, and blood magic.
He demands my blood, my obedience, and my passion. But he’ll never have my heart, no matter the games he plays.
If I want out, I’m given an impossible choice: Lose my best friend or lose my soul.
Vampire King by Rowan Hart is the first book in the Nightshade Vampires and one of the best books I think this author has written - and that’s saying a lot.
The attraction between Eloise and Ambrose, the push and pull they have and the demands from Ambrose (which are expected based on who he is) and the fact that Eloise has the strength to stand up to the King of the Vampires, is perfection, and I loved every moment of it.
Along with the overall mysterious element of the world of vampires, Deirdre’s disappearance and what’s happening with Rapture, will captivate you wholly.
Also I kinda love that Eloise is “plus size” or “cubby” as she referred to herself. For all those moments of getting lost in a book, it’s nice to have that character connection, especially with a vampire romance.
There are POV’s from both Eloise and Ambrose which just heightens their overall attraction and the inner torture that they both fight through before finally taking that next step that’s so steamy your book my just go up in flames.
Loved this quote: “Embrace yourself, Ms. Morse. There’s no need to be cruel to yourself when the world is cruel enough.”
Side note: this story is set in the same world as the Blackfang Barons series by Marie Robinson and Elena Jadin. I highly recommend reading that series, either before or after you’ve read Vampire King.
A bit two dimensional. No real substance. Lack of details or glossed over. Could have been better if there was more depth. Not sure yet if I will read book 2.
Safe:
No virgins/manhos but hero has been with a lot of women and many mentions of past relationships including someone he was gonna marry and thought may have been his wife
No cheating / sharing
No ow/om drama that I can remember? (It's been a few weeks)
This was alright. It definitely had the potential to be better but it’s a decent read.
The h bargains herself as a feeder to Vampire H for 3 months in exchange for helping find her missing friend. Of course, there’s a bit more to it but that’s the basic premise here.
The H literally wastes no time in tasting her but the romantic stuff is a much slower burn. He realizes pretty quickly she’s his mate but doesn’t tell her til late in the story. She accepts that without question which I thought was peculiar.
There’s some touching and oral a bit past halfway (maybe 60ish percent?) but they don’t have sex until 85%. I wasn’t impressed with that at all. Slow burns are lame. When they finally do get to it, it’s pretty underwhelming. After all that wait and buildup it was disappointing.
My other irritation here is they never really address her being turned. We know from his inner thoughts it’s possible and it seems unlikely that she wouldn’t eventually be turned but he never tells her if he will or won’t. He doesn’t even tell her if it’s possible. When she brings up her growing old and dying he brushes it off.
I’d class this as HFN, at best because there no resolution there. I know there are more books coming and presumably we’ll get more info on these two through the future couples books but I’m annoyed all the same. I’m not sure if even bother reading further anyway.
No big push away from either No OW/OM drama No cheating No separation but he childishly avoids her for two weeks while she’s living with him because he’s a giant baby despite being 1200 years old.
This is safe.

I really wanted to like this more than I did. I did like the beginning but I just found myself not liking the FMC. It was an ok read. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it.
DNF at 50%. It was so good in the beginning, but at 50% there was a whole backstory between vampires and shifters that introduced random names of characters that had nothing to do with the first half of the book. It lost me there.
If I had to review this book in one sentence, it'd be this: I wanted more.
The lore is interesting, but I feel like we barely scratched the surface. I need more info about this city they're in (like where the hell is it located???), I need more about how the creatures all ended up living together. I need more about the dynamics between demons and wolves and orcs and vampires, etc. And this drug, Rapture--where did it come from? Who invented it? Where's it produced? Why can't Ambrose control the supply of it (seems like something the mafia would be on top of, no?). We're fed scraps of information, and I need waaay more to be satisfied.
The relationship escalates at warp speed. I needed there to be more pining. More misunderstandings. More longing. I needed to see Ambrose woo Eloise--instead everything seems fueled by this mysterious attraction (that we learn later is the mating bond). I'm not sure Eloise would have come around to liking (nevermind loving) Ambrose without that bond guiding her way. Because there's zero character development from the first meeting of the woman to the end of the book when she's the queen. Without that supernatural connection, I don't think we'd have had the same book at all.
Speaking of the relationship, there's virtually ZERO time spent on the mating aspect of their bond. They create it in the heat of passion, and then we are told that the conversation about exactly what that means happens off page. I think that's something the readers should have been privy to. I also think Eloise should have had more of a reaction to the realization than she does. She only muses that she's waiting for the panic to set in, but that it never does. Okay, but why not? She entered into a bond without knowing at all what it meant, in the heat of passion, and now knows that it can't be broken. Even if I LOVED the man, I'd be flipping my shit. And love, by that point, hadn't exactly entered the picture. Consent is a massive thing. And one can't consent unless they know, explicitly, what they are consenting to.
Even though we get Ambrose's POV, there's a lot less mafia-ing going on that I hoped for. A vampire mafia book? Surely there's gonna be blood guts and gore, right? And there is--but it's seemingly added in more to remind us that Ambrose is a badass than because of any relevant plot point. He slaughters people we don't know, and the excuse given is the vaguest possible (they're selling stuff they shouldn't be). The rest of his POV chapters are just him obsessing over Eloise and talking about his twitchy cock.
There's also zero time dedicated to turning Eloise. Ambrose clearly has some kind of hang up surrounding the notion, but we only get a very vague, brief glimpse into what that could be (that it's something to do with a woman he lost in the past). There's also zero time spent training or preparing Eloise for vamp life. It all happens in the Epilogue, and we're told that 2 years have passed between the end of the story and the date of the turning. And that there's going to be a wedding at some point in the future. But it's read off like someone reading a grocery list of plot points, rather than being a fully fleshed out story arc--which should have been a part of the actual book, not all stuffed into the epilogue.
The ending of the book sort of just slaps you in the face. It's obviously not a hard ending. There's stuff that definitely will be picked up in future books, but I didn't really feel like Ambrose and Eloise got their story finished before the end happened.
I know what you're all thinking. If I had so much to bitch about, why am I still giving this 3 stars? Well. I see the vision. I'll be honest, I don't ever expect very much going into these sorts of books. But this one surprised me. I just feel like it could have done with 100 or so more pages to flesh out some of the good stuff that's already inside. I enjoyed what there was. I just... ahah, wanted more.
I can’t recall the last time it took me this long to read a book. The only reason I didn’t DNF this was because my friend wanted to discuss it.
If someone were to ask me for a vampire book recommendation, this would not be mentioned.
❗️SPOILERS❗️
The first 30% was well paced and intriguing. Then I noticed how conversations were beginning to be repeated. There were several instances where I noticed the characters having similar conversations to ones they already had. I felt like there wasn’t much character development.
Eloise said she likes to push Ambrose’s buttons. She would act as Ambrose called it “bratty”. Then the next minute she’d retreat into herself.
Along with that I think the author tried to make Eloise feel relatable. Eloise describes herself as chubby. She compares herself to her best friend, and she comments on how her friend has more of an ideal body type. A chapter or two later Eloise borrows a dress from Deidre’s closet to meet Ambrose. Most of the guys hit on her, and she constantly comments on how curvy she is. After a point it’s like girl I get it.
Then she mentions how she wears leggings with a hole in the thigh area and T-shirts with her messy bun. She doesn’t try hard to impress. At first she hopes she won’t have to wear heels that were better suited for a celebrity. Then she ends up wearing two pairs of heels after by choice.
All of those comments are minor. I can easily get passed them. What I can’t forgive is how she calls Ambrose My King. There were several cringe moments in this story. It’s a vampire book so I expected cliche dialogue. This made me laugh. They said the most melodramatic things to each other. Very instalove.
I couldn’t get into it. I didn’t care for any of the characters. This just wasn’t for me. It does not mean it can’t be for you!
I was really looking forward to this one, especially after reading some reviews and the >4 star overall rating. It was just ok for this listener although I admit I did drop one full star due to narration. I didn't care at all for the narrator (Bella Barton) so that definitely lowered my rating. I thought her male voices were horrible. Nonetheless I will probably listen to the second book at some point but I'm in no rush to get to it since it has the same narrator. Perhaps I would have felt a bit differently if I had actually read this vs listening.
3.75 This was an excellent paranormal romance, which was both a vampire and a mafia one. Two types of romance books that I do actually like.
Even though it had a lot cliche tropes that are typical for the genre, this novel gave me exactly what I wanted from it. It was very fun and easy to read. I was eager to pick it up each time.
The story takes place in some sort of underground and edgy part of a big city, which is one of my favorite types of settings. The location was definitely one of my favorite aspects of the story. I also loved the spice, of course. It was very much an insta lust story 🌶
I loved the FMC, who is plus size and curvy, and she always stands her ground. Her friendship with Deidre was so wholesome. I always love a strong friendship in a book 🥰
The MMC is your typical cold hearted, broody mafia man. Always love that for me. He did make me cringe quite a lot, though 😬 Personally I found the other male characters a lot more interesting. My personal favorite is actually Kasar, so I can't wait to pick up the sequel which follows his story.
Another character I loved was Eris, so I hope she appears in the other books as well. I always love a badass female character.
This was a really fun read perfect for spooky season 👻
Okaayy....this was good, it definitely kept me engaged enough to keep going and want to read the other books in the series. Normally typos or inconsistencies in a book, don't keep me from enjoying it as long is it's not really awful. This definitely had typos but i think the biggest gripe i had is the inconsistency with Ambrose's looks! I hate it when an author doesn't give a descriptive or accurate detail of a character's looks....hair color, eye color, build, etc, especially for a main character...that can seriously make or break a story for me because that is how you're able to make the characters really come to life in your mind. Ambrose, the male lead, is first described with dark hair then a little bit later she mentions his golden honey hair so here i am thinking ok i've clearly been picturing this vampire completely inaccurately, but then later she's running her fingers through his dark hair...which one is it!!??...because those are vastly different hair colors! That right there about put me off, but again, the story... aside from that pretty major snafu (in my humble opinion)... was good so i continued on. And continue on i will, with book 2!
I couldn't out this book down. Eloise will do anything it takes to find her best friend even making a deal with Ambrose. Their chemistry was hot from the start. I can't wait to read more.
I haven’t read a vampire book since the Twilight series was released and that was back in 2008. Let me tell you, I couldn’t put this thing down. I finished it in less than 24 hours. Eloise makes a deal with the Vampire King, Ambrose, in order for him to help her find her best friend. In this deal, she has to live with him for 3 months. Eloise loved to push Ambrose’s buttons and it was fun to see. She was strong and always held her ground. Their chemistry was banging right from the start. This was a fated mate’s situation which normally I hate but since it’s Vampires, I think it makes sense. It’s also told from a dual POV. Anyways, I was booked and I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series too.
Um okay and omg freaking goodness this was a very excellent Vampire King book I’ve read this far like omg whew chile got me hot and excited. Way to go Author!!!!
I loved how Ambrose didn’t force his self on her. He let her come to him. She didn’t bend to him right off. So worth the read and I want me a couple of his vampires.
1/5... and that is incredibly generous. Spoilers ahead, but I promise you, you do not care.
I feel the need to start with the rainbow cacti tank top. (Actually, I feel the need to start with the fact that I only read this for a challenge where the author's initials match yours. Thus, here I am.) The messy buns I could handle. The heels straight out of 2008 I could handle. The matte lipstick, I could handle.
Rainbow cacti tank top? Man. I don't even know what to say.
Her whole personality is calling herself 'chubby' or 'too fat' or saying 'i'm more of a cookies and cream gal than a salad person' and I got REAL sick of that. The whole thing felt like a millennial self insert (which, if the author profile picture is any indication... is exactly what it was. Peace and love.)
Bro was thinking about sex WAY too much. Like, dude, you're one million gajillion years old get yourself together. Any spicy scenes were so strange and graphic and weird. I don't read things like this, like, at all, so maybe that's just me. ALSO it was complete instalove (expected nothing less) and the whole reason she made a bargain with Ambrose (the big bad mafia vampire) which was that her friend, Deidre, was captured, just... fizzled out in favor of graphic spicy scenes.
Sentences did not make any sense, especially nearing the end of the book. It felt rushed, and you could tell by the way the sentences were structured. The epilogue felt like it was written in one very rushed sitting.
Whenever the book randomly decided to lore drop on me about Rapture or werewolves or Michael Garner or Orcs or supernaturals or FORCED ASSIMILATION BOARDING SCHOOLS I completely checked out. Skip, skip, skip. What. Is. Happening.
Super clear nobody edited this. This is what I get for looking through kindle unlimited. I subscribed to the free trial for this. I did not know what I was getting into.
4.5/5 stars. Loved this. I loved Eloise and how she always stood her ground even when in front of the Vampire King. Had a great time with it and I want the others books from Ambrose inner circle.
You might actually like this book so don't take my review to heart. I'm just picky.
I don't like instant feelings like Ambrose had for Eloise; I'm more into slow burn. I don't like that Eloise is written with such poor self-esteem. I think the author was trying to make her relatable to the average woman? Saying she's "chubby". Comparing herself to her thin bestie Deirdre. Instead of being relatable, it came across as "pick me" which I hate. The way she's described, Eloise sees herself as "chubby", but is otherwise just voluptuously curvy. It didn't seem plausible if there truly was that much of a difference between Eloise and Deirdre enough to comment on, that Eloise could borrow Deirdre's clothes. For example, my cousin is willowy and I am not, and there's absolutely no way either of us could raid each other's closet.
As for the storyline...I didn't care enough about the characters to feel invested. I technically DNF'ed because I wasn't motivated enough to read the epilogue.
This book is a good enough distraction and easy read.

Oh man... spicy, sexy, smutty and we get to swoon over a Mafioso Vampire King? Whew, the chemistry between Ambrose and Eloise was
Speaking of Eloise, I adored her as a FMC. Any leading lady in a mafia-esque novel who is sassy, sweet and gets wrapped around every brute enforcers little finger is a fav in my book!
Great start to the series and I cannot wait to read the next two!
There was no chemestry between the MCs just insta love. I liked the story besides the insta love madness. Some interessting side characters and I was hooked into the whole "side story". But man the insta love ruined it for me.
And imagine you go to an ancient vampire to get help, accept the bargain he offers and then you bitch the whole time. You went to him for help, bitching and moaning isn't cute.
You're mind has to sprint to keep up with these two. What started as a bargain to find her reporter bbf, turns out to be the ride of her life. Or how a 1200 year old(give or take 50 😉) vampire king shows why he's the true king, yet battles his own demons when his reign is underminded, yet 1 sassy female has him wrapped around her sassy mouth. 6 ******
