Dead from overwork in our world, Rae Taylor was reborn in her favourite otome game and immediately set about avoiding all the males around her so she could make a play for the story’s villainess, Claire Francois. But this is not Rae’s side of the story…

I don’t dislike these little companion pieces to the main action, honestly, and, while this is not quite on the level of the Sayaka books that spun out of Bloom Into You, it provides a good excuse to go hang out with these two characters again.

Now, let’s get the elephant acknowledged first: I don’t agree with the take that Rae is badgering Claire into submission, but if that is your feeling (and that’s fair enough, your opinion is valid and I get where you’re coming from), be aware that there is nothing here that’s going to change your mind and don’t approach it as such.

We also still gotta do the whole incest thing (sigh) and there’s a lot of Rae being goofy, which is definitely the mask she wears, but could stand to slip just bit more than it does throughout. Rae is a lot more than her comedy routine and the story is better when it can show it, but she’s almost all schtick when seen through Claire’s eyes (although Claire’s more perceptive than you might realize). And there may be some whitewashing of character motives in there too.

Which is what it is, but what it mostly is is Claire bringing her own viewpoint to this story. Although story might also be a misnomer, as this functions as a highlight reel of the series rather than an especially cohesive narrative. Again, companion piece.

But what we do get is very good. In addition to the looks at the best parts of the main story - I will never, ever get tired of the scene with Rae discussing her homosexuality in frank terms - there’s also a lot done with Claire’s minions and her roommate, Catherine, who has hilariously (if the story is to be believed, which it should not) been around this whole time, but invisible.

Being inside Claire’s head is very fun. She was absolutely awful at the start, as the story quickly reminds us, and slowly becomes just that smidgen more human. There’s also a lot more implication that her relationship with Rae is more ‘just how they are’ after a point. The little, tiny slips in Claire’s facade are worth the whole thing - the one time in the book she uses Rae’s name is great.

There’s more to it than that though - Claire may be holier than thou, but she always has the idealized position of nobility as a standard that must be upheld. Which brings her into conflict with those who see their power as a fait accompli that gives them leave to be awful. Her loyalty to her friends, even her murderous ones, is very clearly defined here.

Beyond an excuse to read this story again, and see how Inori has indeed gotten better as a writer (minus the names of things; there were already some doozies but the composer they name in this one? ARRRRGH), it does not diminish its source. No, it offers a new way to see things and that’s no bad thing.

The new subplots are interesting, the old stuff is given a solid new perspective, Claire becomes a bit more than she was as a character. As far as achieving what this sets out to accomplish, it does so incredibly soundly. It doesn’t hurt that the school portions are when this story was at its best too.

4 stars - essential, no. A waste of time? Certainly not. This is definitely for the fans, you should in no way start here, but if you are one of those fans, this story will likely be a good time.

tearing everything apart, silently screaming and all the houses and trees from a 5 km radius gone to ashes, toes curling and everything

I don't know if any of you feel the same but I just loved seeing the story from Claire's perspective, it also contains other POVS such as Misha's, her father's, Manaria's,and even Rei's. I believe it is a great showcase of how much she has evolved as a person and how she's come to terms with her love (even though everyone realized that before she did)And I also LOVED how Catherine was introduced and how it deepened Loretta's and Pipi's story. I love hearing about the side characters and their own story and it was pretty good. Some things were very predictable but it was generally OK. It was a very fun read.

I came into this book really wanting to like it for all of the good things I've seen from it on Twitter when it was getting adapted into an anime. I read the entire book overnight and got a massive migraine from the writing halfway through. The book expects you to know the world that you're walking into while at the same time offering so much exposition that it just hurts your brain. No matter how many times I re-read the magic system, I couldn't understand it. I couldn't for the life of me figure out the choreography of the fights. While I understand that this book, told from Claire's perspective, is probably meant to be read after the main series, I didn't know that there were two POV series of the same story until well after I was a fair way through.

And, you know what? I powered through it, because I really wanted to like it. I thought, 'I'm almost at the end. It's less than a quarter, a fifth, a sixth of the book until I reach the end and I can drop it like a hot potato. Maybe it's just the translation that makes this book unreadable, because I remember reading other light novels that massaged my brain in the good way. Maybe the next books in the series will be better.'

And then I hit the and damn near threw the book across the room.

The only reason I finished it was because I was already so, SO crushingly close to reaching the end and shoving this book out of sight and out of mind. What's with ? Seriously, what's WITH It's so unnecessary. It's so unasked for. Thanks, I hate it, and I hate that the brother and sister whose names I can't care to remember ended up just kind of?? Getting away with it??? Is that the phrase I'm looking for? Because they sure as hell aren't held accountable for How necessary was that, really, especially when it wasn't even handled or addressed very well?

So. Wow. No thanks. I'm good. I'm good all the way over here. Good day, good all around. Good, good, good.

You'll want to have watched the anime adaption or read the original light novels first, as this spin-off definitely assumes prior knowledge.

I enjoyed this slow burn romance more from Claire's perspective, though the writing is still very much a "tell, don't show" approach, which makes things drag a little. That said, I think this work had a little more editorial oversight, or the author's skill has increased, as the actual unfolding of events was smoother than in the original LN.

I'm absolutely going to finish both this and the original LN series because I do enjoy the overall story and characters even if it loses points for execution.

firstly, after finishing the entirety of the novel I realized that I had been reading the spinoff (claire’s pov) this entire time 😂😂

and for some reason all the little quirks of the book I accepted as a creative choice 😭😭

for instance, the fact that they’d keep mentioning how an incident turned out to be very important in the future (and I was just like okayyy girl, spoiler much?)

or how there was no point of view of the supposed isekai’d character? (I should’ve thought more about that honestly)

but anyyywaaays, I did have a great time reading this! I love Claire François! and I’ll go on my way to get the actual series before I continue the spinoff (thank you very much)

I'm In Love With the Villainess told from Claire's perspective is an entertaining read, but it adds little new things to be honest. You also need to have read the earlier series if you want to follow what is going on. So in the end, if you are a fan of the earlier series you are probably going to enjoy this book. If you have not read the earlier books, give it a try. If you are not a fan, this book is not for you.

It’s a lot of exposition and shockingly little of the Claire and Rae dynamic. You’d expect a lot more of Claire’s shifting thoughts on her, but instead the big ending of the book is instead centered on Lene and Claire’s hopes of seeing her again. And there’s a whole section from the POV of the incestous brother. Much like the original series, I hope and expect this to pick up in the second volume after it’s set the stage and it can leave Lene and Lambert behind

As the retelling of the first book but from Claire's perspective, I love the new insights you get from her side of the story. It really is just the story of Claire's bi awakening in this version. The book skips over a lot of the key moments from the first book since there wouldn't really be anything new to add but it probably makes it confusing for readers who haven't read the original series. Would definitely recommend though if you already read the original series and you still want more.

Such a good lesbian enemies to lovers trope and brings up really important political and classism problems. The incest at the end ruined it for me though like why was that needed?? But other than that such a good series! Also i swear to god if Rae dies or Claire does become evil or something i’m jumping off a cliff <3

I honestly liked this one more than the one from Rae's POV, but I also think reading it after was more satisfying.

I love the switch in POV from the other characters, it really added to the story/plot. I also loved how Claire's character was depicted and how it felt like she was actually a character rather than just...there I guess.

As someone who loved the main series (faults and all), this didn't feel necessary for me. I'm sure some fans will love it, but I'll hold out and hope the author writes a new series soon.

I really liked the anime but the novel felt slow and yet said nothing. Also that’s on me because I accidentally bought Claire’s POV and was confused 24/7.

I liked the manga better, but the book wasn’t horrible. It has a side romance that’s I didn’t like and didn’t feel needed to be added, but if you put that’s side and it wasn’t bad.

Letsa read this :)

(pre-review)Rae pursuing Claire is even more disturbing in this than the main series...

Anyways, we are introduced to a new character, Catherine, who apparently looks like Claire. Is she one of those artificial souls Rei Ohashi and Taim were talking about?

I had been missing Rae and Claire for some time already, and I'm in Love with the Villainess: She's so Cheeky for a Commoner was a perfect return to their story.

I have never been too interested in the sort of novels that retell the same story from another perspective, but this time I have to disagree with my previous beliefs. One warning, though: it definitely is a companion story. I do not recommend anyone starting the series with this one. I feel like this is more of an additional content for the fans who still crave more time with Rae and Claire.

Nonetheless, as a companion piece, this is an incredibly valuable addition to the collection since it helps redefine Claire's personality and thoughts through her lens in those first installments of the series. As much as our dear villainess starts by showing a sour demeanor, there are sweeter sides to her yet to be shown. In this novella, we get to see those things when she supports and shows up for her friends, roommate, and maid. The interesting thing about Claire, I believe, is that she is not only a petty and immature girl; she is also noble and kind. In the end, it was a matter of deciding whether to push through her inexperience and sorrows or not. Hopefully, we all know she made the right choice .

In other words, as someone on this website said, this is "a rich girls bi awakening" and I am so here for it! Seeing Claire unkowingly fall for Rae was so much fun; it seems to me that the endless antics and jokingly flirting cards the commoner was pulling actually worked for her. She has got some rizz, after all. I just cannot wait to get to "the Nyle is a river in Egypt" stage.

To conclude, I'm in Love with the Villainess: She's so Cheeky for a Commoner is a pretty gift for fans of this phenomenal series.
