For fans of Elephant & Piggie and Frog & Toad comes an easy-to-read series about another unlikely pair: Croc and Ally. These two best friends don't always see things the same way, but there's one thing they do agree on--their friendship comes first!
Croc is grumpy. Ally is happy. Croc sees a problem. Ally finds a solution. In A Lot to Like!, the best friends discuss their favorite color, shape, and number. Then they try to find a new favorite food for Ally, who prefers pancakes above all else. Finally, Ally introduces Croc to his new friend, a sock puppet named Little Croc.
With three short stories, easy-to-read vocabulary, and adorable illustrations, this book is perfect for progressing readers.
A LOT TO LIKE! is a delightful early reader about friendship. Croc and Ally are hanging out and coloring when they start to discuss what they like. While Ally likes red, Croc likes blue. They also find out they like different shapes and different numbers best. Next, they are deciding on lunch, and Ally loves pancakes. Croc makes a bunch of different foods to see if he likes them, and he does - but he still likes pancakes best. In the last story, Ally introduces Croc to his new friend, a sock poppet he has named Little Croc. Although they have their differences, they are still best friends.
What I loved: This is a cute and silly story about best friendship and all the ways in which friends might be different but can still appreciate each other. The story is great for early independent readers with relatively few sentences on each page with a large and clear font. The use of repetitive sight words is great for learning, and having a story that will resonate with young readers is icing on the cake.
The colorful illustrations with a focus on the adorable main characters works well for children who will quickly love them and can appreciate the images quickly while reading. This is a series that early readers will definitely get into.
Final verdict: CROC AND ALLY: A LOT TO LIKE! is a delightful early reader about friendship and appreciating differences.
Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.
Croc and Ally are good friends, but they have different tastes. Ally likes blue while Croc likes red. Ally likes circles but Croc likes squares. Ally may sometimes think Croc is weird, but they are still good friends.
I wish this had made it a touch more clear that they are good friends despite their differences, but I think it did the best it could with the limited space provided. A good reminder for littles that friends don't have to like all the same things to be friends.
Not LOL funny, but it does have some smile/funny moments. I thought it was cute and good and basic for beginning readers. I like that Croc and Ally are really easy to tell apart once you learn who is who. That's something I struggle with a lot in books.
