The Fugitive Doctor #2

Doctor Who: The Fugitive Doctor, Vol. 2: Dead or Alive

Rate this book
2.1 Flying Solo by Tajinder Singh Hayer - Pilot Officer Mohinder Singh Johal is an RAF pilot on a sortie during World War Two. Following a close encounter with a flying blue telephone box, his Spitfire vanishes! The Doctor, whose TARDIS is out of control following a blast from a time disruptor, should be keeping a low profile, but with Mohinder lost in time and space, she has to help bring him home.

2.2 The Junkyard Loop by Aaron Douglas - The Doctor, pursued as ever by Cosmogon, crash-lands the TARDIS on an off-grid junk planet littered with the remains of time machines from a thousand civilisations. After being saved from the indigenous Time-Frost Parasites by Sodalis, an old companion long-marooned, the Doctor must come up with a plan to save them both. But a sinister Division commander has tracked our heroes, and not even Cosmogon can stand between him and his desire to unlock the Doctor's memory and obtain the secrets within.

2.3 Hereafter by Tim Foley - Cosmo has finally captured the Doctor! But they're stranded together on a planet thanks to an unusual psychic forcefield grounding her ship. Tracing its source, they find a settlement that’s preparing for a festival in honour of their 'queen' in the mountain. When Cosmo is captured, the Doctor must decide whether to help her captor... especially now she's discovered, thanks to local woman Herma, that the queen and her minions are vampires!

2.1 Flying Solo - An interesting twist on a typical Doctor Who type adventure. (4/5)

2.2 The Junkyard Loop - A wolf and fun romp. Always happy to hear Alexander Vlahos in one of these. (4/5)

2.3 Hereafter - The Doctor meets the Vampire Queen! (4/5)

Each episodes also includes the usual cast & crew interviews and some music suites as well. I do hope Big Finish will get Jo Martin back to play The Doctor for some more adventures.

In the absence of the televised series (and indeed no confirmation of if Billie Piper is actually the Doctor or not), I think of this series as one of the current flagships of Doctor Who right now - And I'm beyond okay with that because Jo Martin is a stellar lead.

So, coming off the back of Volume 1, Cosmogon is still hot on the Doctor's tail. Beyond that, literally anything could have happened next.

"Flying Solo" was an interesting history lesson more than anything else, but I also felt it moved through the time periods too quick for me to understand how everything was connected. Not a bad listen though, just tough to keep up with the lesson.

"The Junkyard Loop" introduces us to two new significant characters; Sodalis, an old ally of the Fugitive Doctor from a time she can't remember (or can? I wasn't too sure on this), and Commander Zetorius, another Cosmogon who is far more aggressive. This one is pretty good and further deepens the mystery of the Fugitive Doctor, as well as finally introducing a series mystery for this range to us; yeah, there's a lot of mystery going on, but it makes sense for this era and Doctor. Strong as the script was, I do think it was overly reliant on visual storytelling, so a lot of the imagery was lost on the audio format for me, but the narrative structure is still great.

"Hereafter" is the best one in this set by far. It forces the Doctor and Cosmogon to work together against an ancient enemy of the Time Lords; Vampires (with the 13DA's "Vampire Weekend", July is basically vampire month). We learn more about Cosmogon's backstory... And those Wraiths were creepy as heck.

A great box set, even better than the first. I look forward to seeing how the Fugitive Doctor series continues, and hopefully it somehow ties into her "Circuit Breaker" multi-media event next year.

"Flying Solo" - Boring episode that exists only to deliver an anti-colonialist lecture.

"The Junkyard Loop" - ACTION! episode that exists to drop a plot point about a mysterious "man in grey." And to suggest that there's another faction within The Division that has a different agenda than Cosmogon's. Otherwise, it's a lot of running from monsters and doing ACTION-y things, which gets kinda boring and often hard to follow.

"Hereafter" - The only really interesting episode in the set with Cosmogon and the Doctor both crashing onto a planet where they discover an ancient enemy. Adds more to the character of Cosmogon than any of the previous five episodes.

Still, is it enough to keep me interested in this series? I hate the "mystery box" plot, and I'm not convinced that the writers actually have a plan, or intend to reveal anything about the Fugitive Doctor, because I suppose those revelations are going to be left to any future television episodes. If there's anything to reveal at all. The best thing we can hope for is for the TV show to be utterly cancelled and BF be allowed to do what they want with the character. Even then, is there anything in this mystery box? I got the sense that even Chibnall had no real plan when he invented the character.

Episode 1 kinda felt like an extension or copy of the previous episode. 3/5

Episode 2 was quite forgettable. 2/5

Episode 3 was where it all kicks off. The dynamic has shifted, Cosmo gets a bit of embellishment and backstory, and the setting is really atmospheric as well. Reminded me of the best 9th Doc audios. 4/5

At its best, still not as good as the Baba Yaga episode but I'm not mad about it. Alice Krige and Jo Martin provided awesome performances and their voices really suit the format. They both get 5/5. That said, I'd actually like that dynamic to end and get the Doctor involved in something else next time. She might be a renegade but she's clearly still drawn towards helping those in need. I'd like to see her involving herself in some more conflicts and defusing tense situations. I hope she comes back very soon!

Flying Solo
Fun start to the boxset. Fugitive firmly establishing herself as the Doctor like any numbered incarnation and not solely a mystery box. The historical commentary was very welcome and proves why Doctor Who requires diverse voices

The Junkyard Loop
Fugitive crash lands on a planet where she meets an old companion, Sodalis. Solid standalone that gives us insight into Fugitive's enigmatic past. Sodalis has good chemistry with the Doctor even if she's written a little generically

Hereafter
After many episodes of cat and mouse Fugitive and Cosmo have to work together. Great dynamic and exploration of Cosmogon as a character. Jo Martin usually plays the role of the Doctor quite "cool" and detached so it's always nice when that façade drops

Jo Martin
I know it's not cannon but they should have made Jo Martin the 15th doctor and used big finish writers to create the TV show.
