Ugh. This was like a bad Lifetime movie. I did not like the writing or the characters and the story didn’t go anywhere! I can’t believe I finished this snoozer.

“It’s so weird to think a stranger could change your life but that’s exactly what Paul is going to do, especially if we get to keep him on year-round”

Amy and Tim move into their dream home excited for their new beginning. The place needs a ton more work than they thought so they decide to hire a live-in caretaker.

Paul seems perfect for the job. Unbeknownst to them Paul has had a plan for revenge for years that he is about to put in motion. It starts with little things. Amy notices strange things happening. Objects appearing and disappearing. Her husband doesn’t believe her and this causes stress and tension in their relationship. As Paul’s plan enters the final stages, Amy and Tim realize that they are in a fight for their lives.

This was a quick read, but unfortunately not for the right reasons.
I found myself skimming the pages and to be honest, I felt shortchanged by this book.
It was not a thriller, it was not psychological nor gripping, and there was NO twist, but it indeed was a killer.
The characters seemed unfinished and kept doubting everything about themselves and each other, the plot just did not move anywhere since 10% in. I felt like there could be something coming, like the promised twist on the cover, or more character development with explanations about the cheating, why they got married so soon after this infidelity occurred, something sinister (it was advertised as a thriller after all), but nothing. Nothing at all. It fell so flat.
I could not believe how these two people got married and yet doubted each other, their relationships and love for each other constantly, as well as did not recognize their partner in the dark? What the heck?
The writing felt simple, repetitive and I felt like the very weak plot got explained to me again and again and again... and with no payback.
I feel harsh to leave a one-star review, but this is not a great book, in my opinion..
Thank you, NetGalley for the ARC.

This was a fast-paced page turner that’s a wee bit far fetched and over dramatic but still a good weekend read. I thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.

BOOK REVIEW 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I’ve never read a book by this author before and this cover was so creepy I couldn’t pass it up!

Amy and Paul are newly married and just bought their first house. An old, abandoned, and run-down fixer-upper in a remote area. And they purchased it sight unseen. I’ve always dreamed of doing this, but not the sight-unseen part!

Once on the property, they find several mysteries that weren’t in the listing. The biggest surprise is a quaint little cottage that appears to be lived in. The agent claims to know nothing but acts a little shady when asked.

The house has a huge garden and a lot of property so they decide to hire a caretaker to live in the cottage and help out. And yes, this atmospheric thriller has a creepy caretaker! But Paul isn’t just a caretaker.

Once the story had me hooked, I flew through the pages. I wanted all the juicy details on Paul. And what about Amy and Tim? I think I’ll go with a traditional lawn service, thanks!

Thanks to Inkubator books and Zooloos Book Tours for this ARC!

so I didn't like this one very much. like the idea was there but it was not executed good enough. at least not for me. the characters were weird and they actually didn't know what they were doing. they didn't trust themselves or each other. every thing was spelled out and I felt like somethings were explained over and over and over. I didn't have that WOW factor so to speak and fast paced only because I skipped some pages to see if anything interesting happens.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me a copy in exchange for my honest review

This was a decent thriller. Interesting enough to keep reading and find what happens. Most of it was predictable and too spelled out--the caretaker's identity, presence, and motive was too much given away too soon--but there were still a couple fun surprises. The ending was an intriguing cliffhanger.

Thank you Netgalley and Inkubator Books for the copy of The Caretaker. This had a great plot but I didn’t think it was executed very well. The characters were all unlikable and unbelievable. Who buys a house sight unseen? Who what Tim did that started this whole story? I won’t give any spoilers but there were so many things and settings/incidents that made no sense at all. If you are willing to suspend belief and don’t mind unrealistic characters, you might like this book. Sadly, it wasn’t for me.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Caretaker' by Emily Shiner.

Read and reviewed for ZooLoos Book Tours, Emily Shiner and Inkubator Books.

Publication date 20th April 2022.

This is the first book I have read by this author.

I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching gorgeous cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Inkubator Books. I have yet to read a book published by Inkubator Books that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue and 45 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Surrey, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 , UK 🇬🇧 . The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture.

This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonists are Paul, Tim and Amy. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.

Love, love, loved this book!!!! Absolutely gripping edge of your seat page turner!!!

This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene and put you in the storyline. The cover and synopsis suit the book perfectly.

The storyline was captivating and addictive from the first page until the last and I was completely invested in it. It was absolutely rammed full of lies, deceit, tension, twists, suspense and everything you could ask for in a page turning psychological thriller. I just could not put this book down and finished it in one sitting. The atmosphere was perfect for the storyline with a gothic, creepy vibe that makes the hair on your arms stand on edge. It was extremely fast paced with something constantly happening to keep you addicted. Every time I kept telling myself one more chapter the one I was in ended at a point where there was no way I could stop reading so I absolutely devoured it in one sitting!!

Do not start this book until you have cleared your schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!

The characters were all realistic and strong and I was completely invested in them throughout. I love the fact that we got to see what was happening from Paul's point of view and to know why he was doing what he was doing. It is very rare that you see a storyline from the "bad guys" point of view so this was a unique experience. I really enjoy it when you do as it helps the reader understand them more making them more realistic to the reader. I had mixed feelings towards Paul. There were times where I had a lot of sympathy for him and actually hoped things would work out and then others where I thought he needed some serious psychological help. I did feel sorry for Amy and felt she was the only innocent one in it all and deserved better. I thought Tim was very immature and really did not click with him. I found him to be quite aggressive at times and like a spoiled brat who expected Amy to stay in the house moping while he was gone and wasn't happy when she didn't. I won't say anymore as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. Regardless of what I thought about who, each character worked perfectly to make this page turning psychological thriller!!!

Congratulations Emily on a huge success and I would like to welcome you to my favourite author list 🥂 I am off to add all your past books to my wish list and I'm looking forward to your future ones too 😊

Overall an absolutely unputdownable psychological thriller that will keep you up at night on the edge of your seat with a pounding heart!!

Genres covered in this book include Suspense, Psychological Thriller, Domestic Suspense, Women's Psychological Fiction, Mystery and Psychological Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Mark Edwards, Cathryn Grant, Daniel Hurst, K. L. Slater, Mark Edwards and anyone looking for an explosive psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout!!

The Caretaker by Emily Shiner was my introduction to this author, and I have very quickly added her previous novels to my TBR. If you are looking for a fast-paced read that will have you looking over your shoulder with a sense of unease, this is it.

Amy and Tim have recently moved into their dream home, hoping to make a fresh start. With Tim having accepted a recent promotion, fixing up their new abode seems a daunting task, and they decide to seek out a reliable caretaker to help get things into shape. When Paul, a mature widower, answers the call, it seems that it is not only the grounds that will be well cared for, but also Amy herself, whom Paul quickly takes into his affections. What will transpire is far from what Tim and Amy had imagined for their new beginning.

This twisty tale had me hooked from the very start, and I was propelled through the pages to a satisfying and shocking conclusion. I look forward to reading more from this new to me author.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for an ARC.

Interesting concept, terrible execution. I would never recommend this and it was hard for me to even get through it, even during the action scene. It was just so ridiculous, repetitive, and for a book with less than 300 pages, it felt like it would never end. Also how is it a 'twist' ending? They made it pretty obvious. Emily, I'm sorry for my harsh words but please just learn to read your book as if you were only the reader. Why would you want to hear the same exact thing from 3 different perspectives constantly? After one POV says it, we usually don't need to be walked through it again.

I was interested from the very beginning. There were twists, which some of them I had figured out.
There were some places in the book where I didn’t want to put it down.
The ending was very shocking! This was a really good book!

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

I was so bored reading this. It stared out promising, but quickly became repetitive… and the “twists” weren’t very twisty. I felt like I kept reading the same pages over and over, the dialogue kept repeating and I found I was starting to skim the pages to avoid reading the same things again. I do not recommend

Really good story.

Wow.! Amy and Tim get married and buy an old house. They plan to fix up the house and the gardens but find that the gardens are years overgrown and too much for them to handle. They hire Paul, a caretaker, to live in the caretakers cabin and work on the yard. Since Tim has to travel for work, he feels better knowing Amy won't be alone while he's gone. Maybe he should rethink that!
Great book!

I have read and enjoyed several of Emily’s books. I read the synopsis for ‘The Caretaker’ and it certainly sounded like just my type of read- a psychological thriller with a twist. I couldn’t wait to start reading and so without further ado, I grabbed a cup of tea, grabbed my Kindle and settled down for an interesting afternoon of reading. Overall I did enjoy reading ‘The Caretaker’ but more about that in a bit.
I have to be honest and say that it took me a while to get into this book. I think that part of the problem was the fact that I didn’t gel with either of the main characters Amy or Tim. They are newly wed couple, who have done without a honeymoon so that they could buy their ‘forever’ home. Both characters tended to get on my nerves for some reason. I got the impression that both of them were hiding secrets. Eventually I did get into the story. I had my own suspicions as to what was going to happen and I had to keep reading to see if I was on the right track or if I had wandered down a diversion. This wasn’t a book that I could read over the course of a single day so I binge read it over the course of a few days. I found ‘The Caretaker’ to be an interesting read, which certainly kept me guessing.
‘The Caretaker’ is well written. Emily certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and take them on one hell of a journey. For me this was more of a slow burn story. As time went on and the story developed, the pace of the story quickened and the level of tension steadily increased, culminating in a dramatic conclusion. Reading ‘The Caretaker’ felt like being on an at times scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I love the way in which Emily makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action.
In short and overall I did enjoy reading ‘The Caretaker’. I will certainly be reading more of Emily’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.

This was a very messed up story. I found that I kept turning the pages despite not liking the characters and it kept me going when I had COVID. Tim is a douche and Amy is a bit weak, second-guessing her Husband.

However, I kept going. Boy, I am glad I did. The ending, what a shock. That final sentence sent chills down my spine. Oh, my days.

The rest of the story is an uncomfortable read, because of what happens. The idea of this story is dark, I have seen a few films set like this and loved them despite worrying whether it could happen in my house! We know who is doing what and why which I never have a problem with because I love watching everything play out. You see the two sides of the character as we know the truth while the others are completely oblivious. I find this fascinating watching the effects it has on the unawares, waiting for the reveal to happen, and it keeps you on tenterhooks for sure!

A lot of my notes on this book were things like wow, stalker, douche, and creepy so you can see how it goes.

There are some points you have to suspend some disbelief with some scenes but then it wouldn’t be a thriller without that. However, Emily’s writing sucks you in as we are led on this rollercoaster of crazy leaving you with a sickening feeling at the end…I hear there may even be a sequel -*squeal*

The premise of The Caretaker by Emily Shiner sounded so good to me! And I love the cover (I totally do judge books by their cover!). Unfortunately, it fell a bit flat to me and I was let with just wanting more.

Newlyweds Amy and Tim buy a big, old house in surprise, a rural area. What ever could go wrong?! They end up hiring a caretaker to help with the property. The caretaker, Paul, lives in a tiny little cottage on the property. That's when strange and creepy things start to occur. I won't say too much to not give anything away but it was rather predictable. This is my first book by Emily Shiner and I do look forward to reading more from this author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Too Stupid

I have read several of Emily Shriner books. I have not liked any of them, but After reading some of the reviews, I thought I must be missing something. So I read The Caretaker..And once again, it was stupid. Now understand, I love Psychological Thrillers. There is no depth to any of her characters. They all seem plastic. The storyline was absurd. The ending of this book was really ridiculous. Read it if you must, just be aware that it is boring and there are a lot Thrillers out there that are so much better than this one…

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this advanced copy, for my honest review.

This book gave me the "The Intruder" movie vibes. Most of it was predictable, but there were a few surprises that made the book good overall! Amy got on my nerves a bit because she didn't stand up for herself much and Tim acted childish a lot during the book, but I would recommend this book to someone who likes psychological thrillers and/or domestic thrillers.

Predictable

If you have never read a story or watched a movie about a creepy caretaker, you might enjoy this one. The plot is so transparent from the beginning that the only reason I finished this was to give my opinion. Fortunately, this book was free. The writing style was adequate, albeit repetitive and simplistic. This may be her first book so with proper editing and experience she could become a better writer.

I really wanted this to be great! I did end up finishing since I wanted to see how things ended, but I just feel like the entire book was full of frustrations. Like a horror movie you see on TV.

You know in those movies where the characters are just SO dumb and just mess everything up? This happened in the book ALL THE TIME and it’s so frustrating.
I highlighted all of the parts where Amy SHOULD HAVE KNOWN or should have just called 911.

I still liked this book because I generally enjoy all thrillers, but it’s not my favorite and I probably wouldn’t recommend it to my friends to read (unless I know they like the “bad horror movie” style)

*Spoiler alert* DO NOT READ BEYOND THIS POINT IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE BOOK.

She had her phone open on the phone app and said she didn’t call because she didn’t want to draw attention to herself. Well obviously she was found anyways and guess what? She accidentally drops her phone, kicks it, and it smashes. 🙄 Like seriously?? A crazed psychopath is coming for you, you have your phone in your hand with the phone app OPEN, and you literally decide to NOT call for help?

The other parts that bother me are when she throws away her knife and she’s like “I really wish I had something to protect myself”. I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes.

Want to know what’s even WORSE? At the end, she ends up getting her own apartment right. But SHE’S NEVER EVEN SEEN THE LANDLORD OR MET HIM IN PERSON. For someone who literally says she’s TERRIFIED AND CAN’T EVEN LEAVE HER APARTMENT, she lets a rental company take care of everything for her. Amy, didn’t you learn your lesson the first time? Now she’s surprised that she’s being stalked again. Come on, Amy!!!

This started out as an engaging page-turner until 80% in when it turned farcical.

Amy is married to Tim an HR consultant. They have just bought a rambling house that they got at a steal and require help to restore it, in particular its enormous garden. They're also surprised to discover a cottage on the premises that unlike the main house is well kept and looks lived in.

They hire a caretaker, Paul, who together with his deranged daughter Holly, has his own agenda to make Tim pay for firing him years earlier, which caused him to lose his home and health insurance resulting in his wife Wilma not being covered for an illness she succumbed to. At the time Tim was inexperienced and following the orders of his boss to fire someone and chose a random file from potential employees to without even bothering to follow protocol and read any of the files. This was a glaring error in the story as the employee would have had a legitimate case against the company.

On the insistence of his daughter, Paul is set make Tim pay by taking Amy from him but 80% in to the tale there was so much to-ing and fro-ing by each of the characters, the story lost complete impetus. Pity as it had great potential. 3 stars.

The Caretaker is the perfect summer read for the beach or in the garden. It’s an exciting and intense thriller but it’s an easy read that doesn’t require intense thinking power so it’s perfect for lazy days of reading.
I was drawn to this book just from the cover. It’s so atmospheric and creepy with the darker tones of the sky and the sombre looking house however I also love houses like this. So it’s one I would likely buy.
The Caretaker doesn’t take long to build up – the tension is there from very early on and it carries all the way to the end. I love atmospheric novels and this one certainly delivers. There is tension between Tim and Amy too as they try to move past a rocky start and begin their lives as newlyweds The tension is great and I had to keep reading.
I don’t want to give any of the plot away but it is full of surprises and twists and I was surprised several times. There are two plots to follow – the main plot of the strange things happening in the house but also the relationship development too.
The Caretaker is an intense and fascinating psychological thriller which makes for addictive reading.

Amy and Tim are having a fresh start and buy a new house. But they hire Paul to be their caretaker and his motives are more sinister than they could ever imagine...
The Caretaker is a psychological thriller that was a gripping read. I had to suspend my disbelief a little but the plot was completely absorbing and I raced through this book.
Amy and Tim are thrilled with their new home. They have had a severe strain on their relationship but are now thinking positiviely and hope to start a family.  However the property needs a lot of work and they hire Paul as caretaker.
We know from the very beginning that Paul is out for revenge for the death of his wife which he blames Tim for. This removes the suspense but increases the anticipation as we wait for him to put his plan into action.
The book is written from the first person perspective of Tim, Amy and Paul. I could understand and identify with each character even when I disapproved of their actions. The ending is very dramatic and has an unexpected twist.
The Caretaker was gripping and totally absorbing with strong lead characters that were easy to relate to.

Another great book by Emily Shiner. It was very intense from the start and was fast-paced. Amy and her husband, Tim, buy a new property to move on from something that happened before they got married. When they realise the amount of work that needs to be done in the garden they hire a caretaker, Paul - who seems perfect at the start. But things are never as they seem, and this caretaker has his own motives. When Tim has to go out of town for a week, Amy and Paul grow closer. However, Amy starts noticing that things are going missing and there's a feeling that she's being watched.

Tim doesn't believe her and thinks that she is overreacting and imagining things, but Paul listens to her and understands her - which makes Tim mad. When he returns home, he decides to confront the caretaker - believing that the caretaker and Amy have feelings for one another. Things take a dramatic turn as Tim and Amy discover the truth about Paul, and not everyone will come out alive.

Riveting

This author just keeps the great stories coming! I give a lot of credit to anyone who puts their stories on paper and sends them out into the word but from her first book Emily Shiner just gets better and better.
Her characters are vibrant - in this book I see Amtrak as both the protagonist and antagonist. One minute she’s independent and confident until she turns Kongo mush and can’t seem to stand in a strong wind. Her husband Tim is the same way -the other main character, Paul, is motivated by love or is it hate.
I loved and hated the main characters through the book.
This is one that keeps the pages turning -holding you hostage until the end.
Any book you can’t put down, no matter what the reason, is one I recommend. Delve into the psyche of these characters and you’ll be sucked in too.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read - a psychological/revenge thriller with a strong plot, an unrelenting pace and a trio of well-drawn central characters. The premise is that a young professional couple move out of town to a remote, grand old fixer-upper which they intend to make into their dream home. Finding the job too much for them, they employ a caretaker/handyman who turns out to be not what he seems. The story is told through the alternating perspectives of the three main characters and I thought this device worked very well and certainly held my attention throughout. It isn’t a stunningly original story but it is a good contribution to the genre.
