The Evergreen Brothers #1

A Boyfriend by Christmas

Rate this book
She’s looking for the one. He just wants a plus-one.

This Christmas, tradition is going to be on photographer Lucy Adam’s side. She’ll finally find Mr. Right and marry him at the gazebo at Melody Square Park, where her late parents tied the knot. There’s just one snag in her plan. Scrooge, aka Carter Evergreen, plans to demolish the park. She needs all the mistletoe she can muster now that her goal has an expiration date.

Lucy has always been the girl next door—literally—and the one that got away. If she wants to find her true love, Carter’s happy to provide dating advice if she’ll be his plus-one at business functions. And to sweeten the pot, he’ll consider her ideas to save the park, too.

But Carter also knows the property is unstable and repairs are too costly. As they grow closer, he’s willing to do anything to save this holiday season for her—except grant her what she wants most. Can their partnership build the real foundation they need to create a magical future?

This is a Christmas book with traditional elements. I don’t think the synopsis is very accurate. They were not second chance and really mad at each other or frustrated . This was a miscommunication to the point where they didn’t communicate years ago when they were teens. They were not really even together. Carter and and Lucy were more second chance because they grew up and matured and recognized the silliness of why they were no longer talking. I felt like you didn’t get to know they characters well enough and it was too surface level. I liked some parts of it, but overall just ok.

Sweet, smart, and funny best describes this delightful novel. Teen friends then frenemies join together “to date.” Each has their own motive for pretending to date. However, the motives do not include falling for each other.

This is a second chance romance between Lucy and Carter. Once childhood friends, now enemies, they come together helping each other out and getting another chance. The author brings strong characters and weaves a sweet Christmas story. It's well written and is an enjoyable read.

I received this arc of A Boyfriend by Christmas in exchange for my honest review. This is the first book in Jami Rogers’ new series, The Evergreen Brothers. Book one features Carter Evergreen and Lucy Adams. It is an enemies to lovers and a second chance romance theme. After her parents died, a young Lucy moved in with her uncle Fred, next door to the Evergreen family. Initially she and Carter were good friends until something happened and she refused to speak to him back in high school. She has held that stance ever since.

As the book opens, we learn that Lucy is hoping to find a boyfriend and get a proposal at the town square park. At the present time though, she has no prospects. Then, she hears that Carter is buying the town square park and plans to tear it down and use the site for his business ventures. Carter is also trying to buy a ranch that he would like to make into a bed and breakfast, but the owner doesn’t want to sell to Carter as he isn’t a family man.

Lucy knows her uncle wants to see her settled with children before he passes away and she decides to work on a plan. She learns about the ranch and offers to help Carter get the right image by pretending they are in a relationship. She suggests that Carter join her at the various town holiday events and be seen by the townspeople helping others and hanging out with Lucy. In exchange she wants Carter to think about leaving the town square park intact. Eventually she explains why it’s important to her to have this park remain. Carter understands her feelings but the money and his company is most important to him. He promises to try to find a way to save the park. Soon the holiday events become like dates and the two realize they have feelings for each other.

There’s some angst as we wonder what Carter will decide to do about the two properties and his growing feelings for Lucy. This is a wonderful holiday story. I loved seeing the positive changes in Carter and the dynamics of the couple. Both are genuine and very likable. I found Carter’s brothers a fun pair. In addition, there is the cute romance between Uncle Fred and Carter’s aunt. I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars.

“Crazy how things changed but still feel like nothing has changed.” Jami Rogers, quote from ARC

A very pragmatic hero, and a bit clueless where some subtleties are involved, features in “A Boyfriend by Christmas”, by Jami Rogers (Tule Publishing), a nice change of pace in romantic fiction with a refreshing dual point of view.
Carter and Lucy start as antagonists in a small town setting, and gradually become friends again, with a few fun events happening with them.
I liked how there was always familiarity between them since they’ve known (and crushed on) each other for a long time, but now it’s as they are seeing each other in a new light.
I also really liked having Carter’s point of view; his laid-back, often clueless masculine persona is well done and realist. He’s a pragmatist and his character feels incredibly genuine, when admitting his own limitations. I enjoyed seeing how his organized mind worked.
The fact he admits so candidly his inability to read Lucy, the heroine, is interesting, too. And he recognizes she makes him “look at everything differently” – so sweet!
Lucy is a warm, cheery person and her social skills contrast with Carter’s seriousness and even social ineptitude. There are some fun moments related to these features of the male character but the main point is his openness about it (he even confesses he’s not great at communicating).
It was sweet that they had been best friends in the past and now reconnect and they’re so good together; Carter especially benefits from being close to his extrovert friend.
I liked that things evolved slowly between them, with the help of a bunch of likeable secondary characters who know them very well.
Even if this is based on an old misunderstanding there’s not too much drama about it and I loved how their strong attraction as teenagers now translates to adult love.

This was a quick read that had a lot of fun little Christmas activities throughout. Lucy and Carter are kind of frenemies. As children, they were best friends for many years, but a misunderstanding and different interests in high school turned them into virtual strangers, even though they lived next door to each other. Now, Carter needs to show the town he’s not the scrooge they all seem to think he is and Lucy wants to convince Carter to help save some of the town’s history. They band together to attempt to accomplish these goals.

Since there is a lot of history between these two, they quickly fall back into some old rhythms and remember how well they clicked in the past. There is a comfort between them that they never found with anyone else. I wouldn’t say this couple had a lot of heat or even tons of warm fuzzies. But they are cute together and bring out the best in each other.

Throughout the book, there are a few inconsistencies that would take me out of the story. Nothing major, more like annoyances. (Why do authors continue to think teenagers these days give even two thoughts to things like Facebook?)

While this story moved quickly, it also seemed choppy to me. Carter and Lucy were jumping around both physically and emotionally and it was a lot to take in at times. For the most part, I enjoyed their tale. I would have liked to see it flow a bit more smoothly though.

very predictable cheesy

The editing or proof reading wasnt great, the plot has been done so many times by many authours it should be buried, it’s totally predictable and completely cheesy. In fact the regular references to romantic movies make you wonder if that is what the authour was hoping for. Not with this story or plot.

A Hallmark Channel Christmas movie worthy read. A misunderstanding ruined a childhood friendship, and they became enemies; not talking for years. I liked how the characters found each other again, though coming together for their own needs, but finding their friendship again and getting their second chance at love. A nice Christmas read!

Thank you to Tule Publishing for the ARC

I loved this story. What a great way to kick of the season of holiday books. Lucy and Carter grew up as neighbors. They were close in high school until a misunderstanding destroyed their friendship. Lucy wants to find the man of her dreams and become engaged at Town Square Park like her parents. Carter wants to buy the park and use it for his business. Lucy decides to take Carter with her to the holiday events to show him how much the park is needed. It also shows the community a different more likeable side of Carter. Despite their growing feeling he knows he can't make Lucy's dream a reality. Can these two hearts find a way to find happiness? Great read!

This is a super sweet Christmas read with plenty of romantic moments to give you great feelings

They are total opposites even if they have known one another all their lives Juicy is a romantic looking for her forever man and dreaming of marrying him at the gazebo where her parents married. Carter is the pragmatic one he knows the Gazebo needs to be pulled down as it is dangerous and too expensive to repair but he isn't against using it to get Lucy to go with him to business functions. Can they find a way to blend their wants and needs and can they find a way to be together You will have to read to see

What a great Christmas Story. It was funny, sweet, cute and romantic. Lucy and Carter were friends in the past but a misunderstanding ruined their friendship. Now these two are given a second chance not only at rekindling their friendship but at love too. I loved their story. Since their story takes place at Christmas it makes that much better! Great read! This was such a fun holiday romance, and exactly the kind of cozy small-town read I love this time of year. Jami Rogers’ writing always hits that perfect balance of charm and sincerity, and this story gave me all the Hallmark vibes in the best possible way—sweet, festive, and full of heart.

I adored watching Lucy and Carter slowly figure out what they really wanted from life…and from each other. Their dynamic as childhood friends reconnecting as adults felt genuine and a little nostalgic, and the dual POV made it even easier to see how deeply their feelings were shifting long before they were ready to admit it. This book had me laughing, smiling, and making all the reader noises as they navigated town traditions, emotional baggage, and a few very cute holiday moments.

I might even have a prediction about a future couple—we’ll see if I’m right!

And that ending? It left me happy in a very “holiday-movie fade-to-snowfall” kind of way. With no spice, a whole lot of warmth, and a small town full of festive charm, this is the kind of holiday romance you curl up with and finish in one sitting.

A delightful read.

A Boyfriend by Christmas, number one in the new Evergreen Brothers by Jami Rogers. A new author to me and a new series make this a win-win for me. Carter Evergreen & Lucy Adams are delightful as hometown residents who has different views on an older gazebo as well as having different reasons for spending time together.

A friendship gone wrong when they were younger now as adults it might be make right, leading to even more. I enjoyed the characters, the mistletoe, and the rebuilding of a friendship that shouldn’t have been turned to enemies.

Look forward to reading more by this author. Hallmark TV channel should be eyeing A Boyfriend by Christmas for movie rights. A Boyfriend by Christmas brought more than one smile to my face while reading it. I am sure it will do the same for you.

An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Boyfriend By Christmas by Jami Rogers is a sweet, awesome love story! I'm so glad I started my Christmas books with A Boyfriend By Christmas. It totally set the Christmas mood for me!

Carter Evergreen is is planning to buy the square where festivals happen all the time and turn it into apartments. Lucy wants one day to get proposed to and married at the square like her mother and grandmother. Carter also wants to buy the Rockwell Ranch and turn it into an inn.

Lucy comes up with an idea to help both of the achieve their wishes. But after awhile, her idea bombs.

There, unfortunately were noticeable errors in this book, but just the latter third of the book. No excuse for the errors, but the whole story had me in a high, happy mood so I can over look the errors. This Time.

This was an awesome story. It features family, tradition, and of course, a Christmas Live!

This story is about Lucy and Carter, childhood frenemies who grew up next door to each other. Both had feelings for each other but things did not pan out for them at school due to unspoken misconceptions that could have been resolved, but were not.

Carter Evergreen is trying to expand his family business by buying two properties in their town and he is up against a lot of opposition and Lucy offers to help him change his image to appear to be a more family orientated person. Carter came across as being very driven but also unaware - he often had no clue how to deal with Lucy.

Lucy is looking for a boyfriend to settle down with. Her only living relative is getting along in age and he has remarked that he would love to see her married and she therefore offers to help Carter as she has her own agenda, in this mutually beneficial relationship.

These two muddle their way into a different relationship from the one they shared at school. Both characters are likeable and there are a lot of auxiliary characters that add to the book. An enjoyable read with a predictable storyline.

This is a new to me author I will say I thought this book was a fun read. In the middle of it the one thing that came to mind was "hot mess express". Obviously when you take to strong headed people you are bound to have some lack of communication and this was very much the case in this story. Lucy loss her parents young and is a fighter and a romantic at heart and will do anything for those she loves and cares about including her small town. Carter on the other had I found very stuck up and selfish and was looking to find away to prove himself to his family, he seeks out to find himself. Overall this book was a fun read and a clean read so I would say its suitable for all readers.

This was okay for a free read, went as expected.
Typical non communication as kids which continues into adulthood.
I didn’t really feel these two connect once they started fake dating.
Not interested in reading the brother’s stories.

Either the BETA reader missed a major plot snafu, or one wasn’t used.
Carter drove Lucy to the hospital in HER jeep but he gets into HIS truck in the hospital car park to drive home. This after Lucy’s already said ““Thank you for giving me a ride, but you don’t have to stay. You should call Tuck or Will to come to pick you up.”

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. I loved every aspect of it, and its writing. I did catch a few spelling errors, but that’s just the person I am. The character + character development was great, along with the story line! I really liked this one. Probably my favorite holiday read this season.

Boyfriend

The character development of the main characters is good. The rest of the cast seems flat. The editing needs a lot of work. Driving together in Lucy’s jeep and then Carter drives home in his truck. How did that get there? The plot synopsis didn’t really work for me. It was a little too contrived.

This is a cute story about Lucy's dream of marrying in the town gazebo; she doesn't even have a boyfriend and Carter owns the gazebo with plans to tear it down. Interesting plot.
