Here is an authoritative, detailed and accessible view of the history and peoples' of the ancient Middle East. It is divided into six easily navigable parts arranged chronologically, and then into chapters exploring the history, religion, political and social organization, art, science, and architecture of the peoples' of the region. The text is illustrated with detailed maps and photographs, enabling readers to visualize the ancient places and peoples described, making it the perfect home reference and study aid, as well as a good read for the interested layman.
Wonderfully illustrated book with 500 images from all of the ancient civilizations from this region accompanied by enjoyable, detailed yet brief introductions to each. Some inevitable overlap which was slightly confusing especially the obscure Sumerian, Babylonian, Hittite, neo-Babylonian get a little jumbled up in your head. It's a chronological offering and for the general reader so again, inevitably it will be hard to follow at times. So, why only three stars? The last chapter entitled "Search for Origins: the rediscovery of the Middle East" was so badly written by an unknown contributor that it almost ruined the entire project. It felt rushed, ill-thought out and worst of all lazy with hazy summaries - too many to quote but it felt written by an intern at the Aussie publishing office. Sloppy end to a great introduction.
One of the best books about ancient Middle Easter history I have on my shelves. Richly illustrated and informative, highly recommended for those interested in this region or history or both. :)
I found this to be an amazing book. One for the library. I took my time reading and studying the various historys of the areas and the amazing full color artifacts throughout the entire book. Full of fascinating archeological finds, names, kingdoms, historic events. I found myself doing some biblical comparison. Truly a good find, and can be found used, in beautiful shape, very reasonably price on through the internet. You will not be disipointed if you have any interest in the early history of civilazation and the Middle East.
