Tenebra City #2

Sin & Spell

Rate this book
A virgin and an incubus walk into a bar–

Correction: not a bar… a bakery.

A virgin and an incubus walk into a bakery–

Born into a powerful magical family, you’ve since traded your spell books for recipe books and wands for whisks to open your own bakery after realizing that the path of witchcraft just wasn’t meant for you. You now spend your days caught up in the black and white fantasies you tend to craft for yourself in an attempt to escape the demons of your past that still haunt you, yet just when reality begins to become especially harsh, a new demon appears in the present.

An incubus, to be more exact.

From the tips of his horns down to the infuriatingly precise Eldredge knot of his silk tie and even further still to the flicker of his maddening tail, Eden Decameron can only be described as a neon menace that not even the thickest of salt rings could ward off. As the CEO & Founder of one of Tenebra City’s most successful tech companies, he seems to have more money than he knows what to do with – and when you are almost forced to give up your bakery after a prominent dragon clan threatens to buy your bakery’s building right out from under you, he makes you an offer that’s much too seductive to refuse.

As the lines blur between vice and virtue and reality and fantasy, can you continue to convince yourself that your arrangement with the incubus is strictly business? Or will you realize that you might want more than even the exceedingly generous Mr. Decameron can give you?

You might just consider yielding to temptation… but do you really want to rid yourself of it?

Sin & Spell is an immersive monster romance told in second-person POV where YOU step into the story as the main character. It contains an incubus CEO, a tail with a mind of its own, and abundant spice that all culminate in a guaranteed Happily Ever After. As the second full-length book in the Tenebra City Series, it can be read on its own, but is better enjoyed after reading Quiver & Quill (the first book in the Tenebra City Series) and/or Grinch & Guile (a Tenebra City Series novella).

I'm still shooketh at how amazing this book is. The writing, the characters and the fun Easter eggs dropped throughout the book is just so 🤌

Eden 🥰 he's so much more than I expected and can I say he might be my new favourite? The moment he made his first appearance I was already IN LOVE.

The relationship he has with the MC is just so precious 😭🥺 Their dynamic definitely made me LOL a couple of times with how funny they are together.

Can't wait to dive back into this rich world soon 😈

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review 🥰

First, if you start your book with a quote from Oscar Wilde's MASTERPIECE , The Picture of Dorian Gray, I'm already in love with it (and you by extension, there is no escape. I love you now, deal with it!) Giddeon was great, but demons (of the seductive variety especially) were my first monsters. Okay, onwards with the review.

This is a second person PoV, so you, the reader, are the main character, and I maintain my statement that this is such an underrated writing style!

Eden is such a lovable character I can't even deal with it! Don't get me wrong, he's an absolute pain in the arse, but, oh, do you love him for it. He's all things you could possibly want a guy to be - attentive, charming, cute, a fucking tease and a complete moron, all rolled up in one absolutely knee-bending form. The reader is a way-too-relatable daydreamer, who more often than not gets lost in her own head instead of facing reality.

Eden is a tech mogul-slash-incubus. The reader is a self-starter - she built her own successful business from the ground up, AND she bakes. Not many of us can claim one of those things, let alone both. They're the best version of opposites attract, where you think they're too different to make it work but they prove you wrong. As stubborn and hard-headed as mules on a bridge, I wanted to bang their heads together multiple times.

It might be one of my favourite books, with how much Eden reminded me of myself and my own struggles with accepting myself, my sexuality, and what that might mean for my relationships in the future. I will recommend it with all I am.

Today is the 'once' in once upon a time, a fleeting moment that somehow turns into the promise of forever.

This book was so much more then I expected. The prose and literary quotes were deep but lovely; though by the end my mind was on definite overload with the way all of your senses are constantly engaged in this second-person POV story. The language and visual-inducing descriptors were well written but so wordy, like;

Your slumber was blissfully silent and dark, for once without the cacophonous nightmares and streaks of red that painted your subconscious.

My sleep was peaceful. ^^Yes, that immersed you way further and was probably necessary for a 2nd person POV but by the end I was definitely ready to leave this POV for awhile.

I really loved how the chapter names set the tone for each segment. It built the anticipation of how we would reach each vice or virtue in each interaction between the reader and Eden. I think the middle 1/3 of the book was the strongest - as their 'partnership' was growing with their outings and conversation.

...his tail curved to tuck a lock of your hair delicately behind your ear while his voice dropped to a mere whisper...

His tail almost acted like it had a mind of its own. It might have been my favorite character out of it all - though the rest of the side characters were neat too, especially Evie's friendship and Silas' sage wisdom at the end. There really was a surprising amount of real world issues that were addressed in this book; the way she

"I am an incubus," he hissed, cheeks hollowing as he clenched his jaw, "that is what I do!"

By the 2/3 mark, I was starting to get worried for our girl, the reader. You could feel the story taking her in a direction that contractually, they were in agreeance wouldn't happen. Of course, what would a book be without an ultimate, climactic 'problem' to solve? I do like the growth they both showed in their characters by the final chapters - and I really liked that we got to see a few more chapters -past- the resolution. Most books would have just ended and we got a few more delicious chapters to show their continued growth.

"What is love, witchling?"

I think I'll keep Quiver & Quill on my TBR list for now for when I'm ready to immerse my senses again. Though - a half-mothman. I struggle.

I loved getting to know Eden after his introduction in Quiver & Quill. He's both sassy and caring, which is perfect in my books. The incubus contract allowed for an interesting set-up and for Eden's character to really shine. There is some fun open-door monster spice - an incubus can change depending on their partner's preferences!

Once again, this book is in second person POV and the FMC isn't physically described or named. She has been through trauma and has lived in a bit of a dream world (think classic black and white film). Eden helps to pull her into a colourful world where she is able to connect with both herself and those around her. The theme of self-growth was really lovely, especially during their separation period. The characters are both good together, but even better after time apart.

A.M. Kore has delivered another uniquely bingeable novel with a sweetheart MC who can't help but take care of his partner, even if he believes he isn't capable of love.

Read if you like:
- sweet and sassy MMC
- virgin/experienced (there is a discussion about the construct of virginity that I appreciated)
- baked goods
- apple blossoms
- "let me take care of you"
- "what's going on in that pretty little head of yours, witchling?"
- Shakespeare & The Portrait of Dorian Grey
- tail play
- lots of 'O's (Eden is an incubus and can't finish until you do)

CW: panic attacks, death of parent (past), grief

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Flame & Fraud (which you’ll see my review for further down in this post), so I figured I should get around to this one first. This series was my introduction to monster romance—Quiver & Quill blew me away so much that I immediately fell in love with the genre and with this series. I didn’t love this one quite as much as Q & Q, but I just don’t know whether anyone will ever beat Gideon for me. What I did love about this one is that it definitely has an adorable side to it too—Eden, our incubus, is deceptively sweet and I really loved seeing that side of him. Just like in the first book, there are so many references to classic literature, pop culture and, of course, hints to the other books that just makes this world feel so much more immersive to me. You can tell that A.M Kore has a bunch of things up her sleeves for the rest of the series, and I can’t wait to discover what all of that is.

AM Kore knows what the people want and what that is a sunny incubus who knows how to use his tail and other *ahem* talents to gently coax one little witchling out of her shell.

A.M Kore's mastery of classic literature and monster romance continues to be clear in her third entry in the Tenebra City Series. Equal turns, poetic, sweet and sinfully hot, I'm in awe of how smoothly she's woven references of Dorian Gray to Shakespeare into a love story about a introverted witch and gregarious demon. Sin & Spell is a whole meal of sensory details - I'd expect nothing less from a story starring an incubus- I rushed through my first reading of it because I was so excited and plan on a more leisurely re-read this weekend because I know I missed tons of fun little details AM wrote in.

I cannot wait to see which monster is up next in the series! (please let it be dragons)

A.M Kore take all my money. please.

I definitely took my time with this one. Not because it was too much but because I wanted to savor the crap out of it! and man. And it was delicious.

Eden was such a playful partner, and his tail?? 😮‍💨 It felt like it had a mind of its own. I can’t wait for Flame and Fraud!!

The easter eggs dropped in this book about the (possible-am i wishful thinking??? 🫣) future books? chefs kiss. I love it when authors incorporate cameos in their books 🤭

A virgin and an incubus walk into a bar..no, a bakery. Eden is a menace and a neon one at that. He will quickly steal your heart as you read through this peak into a slice of life in Tenebra City. This book is just *chefs kiss* you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll swoon, it’s heartbreaking but so so worth it. Sizzling hot from start to finish, you will not regret reading this book or any other from A.M. Kore.

CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS

I’m going to start this review by saying that I do not like second person stories. I hate them, actually. The only second person story I had ever liked was a fanfic on AO3 by shiningloki (yes, that one), but all the rest of second person stories never sat right with me. I never liked x/reader. But I’ve read everything that A. M. Kore has put out, because they’re just that good.

The world building is fantastic. The MMCs are interesting and complex and well thought out and a joy to read. Obviously, they’re flawed characters, you can have a romance novel without flawed characters, but there’s something that draws me back into Kore’s book anytime I read them. And Sin & Spell is no exception.

I knew, in the first chapter, that I was going to have a hard time walking away from this one when the male main character happens to be my favorite combination of colors. Also, I’m a baker, so I absolutely loved that aspect, that the female protagonist owns a bakery and is trying to make that a successful endeavor. I also deeply understand the anxieties that that character presents, I just wish it hadn’t been written in second person. While I understand some of the motivations and some of the issues that she experiences (that I have in the past experienced), I would have found it more compelling if it had either been written in first person or with a character name on it. I know a lot of people want to be able to put themselves into stories, but I have a really hard time doing that when the character acts in ways I know that I would never. But again, like I said, A. M. Kore’s books are that good that I _have_ to keep reading them.

The spice in it has a slow build, but by the time you get to chapter 11, dear lord, uhhhh…that is probably one of the most well written and hottest scenes I have read in quite awhile.

All around, I would say spice is a 5/5, story is a 5/5, and again, the only problems I have with it are the problems that I myself bring into the reading. I do wish there had been a bit more to the banter other than just quoting Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde and that the author used some more variety in descriptive terms during the spicy bits. The spice had good variety, it was just the verbiage that seemed repetitive at times. However, I really, wholeheartedly recommend giving this book and the other released by A.M. Kore a read. Great world building, interesting characters, super sweet, but a little repetitive specifically in language, which I think will improve with each subsequent release from this author.

Quill & Quiver was phenomenal, with a fantastic mothman. Grinch & Guile, also, absolutely wonderful and gave me a fixation on the Grinch that I never thought I’d actually want. And this one, I mean, come on. I knew I’d be interested in an incubus, I just didn’t know I would be _that_ interested in an incubus.

Read this. Definitely.

"Sin and Spell" by A.M. Kore

5⭐️/5⭐️
4🌶/5🌶

"What's going on in that pretty little head of yours, witchling?"

Told in the second POV, you are the owner of a bakery in Tenebra City, a monster-inclusive city. It has always been your dream to not only run a bakery, but to do so in this specific location; years before, your grandmother operated her apothecary out the same building. Unfortunately, a group of dragons want to buy the building and force you to change locations. Desperate to keep the bakery in the same location as your grandmother's apothecary, you strike a deal with an incubus. Eden, a loyal customer, has an infinite supply of charm and swagger. No one, not even you, are immune to his personality. He offers you a deal: 'feed' him in exchange for the deed to the building. But Eden doesn't want baked goods, he has a carnal appetite. Is it possible to maintain such a partnership with someone so charismatic? Or will you lose yourself in Eden's fantasy, consequences be damned?

A.M. Kore has done it again. I wasn't sure how they could top "Quiver and Quill", but they did! "Sin and Spell" is an immersive paranormal romance novel told in the second POV. I love A.M. Kore's writing style, and the FMC in this book hit really close to home. I had to pace myself reading this book because there were many times where the FMC's struggles overlapped with reality.

Some memorable moments:

🍎 This is like a reverse grumpy/sunshine: the FMC is grumpy, the MMC is the sunshine. I really love it when authors do this, because prickly FMCs are my favorite!

🍎 Eden is such an entertaining MMC. He's very sassy, but in such a sweet way.

🍎 The spice is top notch. In books, anytime the MMC isn't squeamish around physical intimacy occurring during menstruation, I'm a fan. In this book, Eden takes such good care of the FMC when she has terrible menstrual cramps, it was really heartwarming to read.

🍎 The twist at ~73% caught me totally off guard in the best way. I can usually anticipate what the major conflict will be between a couple, but I didn't see this one coming at all. I loved the way the author resolved the conflict and tied up loose ends.

If you're looking for a good time, you're gonna need to give this a go. Sexy, successful, tech-conquering incubi? Check. Self-made, sassy, virgin witch-turned-baker? Check. Contract trope? Check. Tail? Check. Redacted? Check.

The Tenebra City series continues to have vibrant world-building with fun Easter Eggs placed throughout leaving me hungry for more books. If you're a lover of Greek mythology, you will especially enjoy its references in this series. Kore writes vibrant characters that you wish would leap off the page so you could grab a cup of coffee together - or hot chocolate :smirk:

Kore brings her own unique personality into her writing with her humor, the quirks of her characters (such as quoting King Lear), and a surprising, uh, redacted scene. All hail the desk bike.

I felt connected to this book from the first page. I love the way it takes you through the story. It puts everyone's emotions into view during each scene and really pushes you to immerse yourself. I felt every page had me strung on a hook and I just had to find out what happened next. Not only do the interactions with Eden show how they both change their views on the world, and each other, but the interactions with all the other characters in the book made me want to know more about each of them and how they will fit in to future books. If you're looking for something you can dive into and feel strongly connected as the FMC with great levels of spice this is absolutely worth reading, and I will be recommending this to anyone who is looking for a great demon romance. 5/5 🌶🔥

It is always such a joy to return back to Tenebra City and learn more about a few of its citizens. Especially when previous characters we have met before are mentioned and small easter eggs of future character books are hinted. I am loving the world that AM Kore is creating with each of these books.

Ah, the italics. The italics game seems to be upped in this one and I am here for it!

There is a line that Eden mentions closer to the beginning that my little science brain just giggled away at in regards to asymptotes. He is so delightful and I am here for his confidence and his competitiveness. Plus the creativity with the game that he comes up with is really freaking cute.

I definitely enjoyed Sin and Spell and I am so ready for the next Tenebra City installment!

EDEN SUPREMACY.

I LOVED this book. Like with the Quiver and Quill and Grinch and Guille, it took me a little bit to get into the 2nd person mindset but once I got used to it I found it aided the flow of the prose.

The characters were brilliantly created and placed so beautifully into the already established world of Tenebra City. I thought the story between Eden and FMC was beautifully handled and loved how her world became more colourful the more she got to know both Eden and herself. The seamless transition from her black and white fantasy into a much more bright reality was interesting and something that I think many readers will relate to.

I feel that I need to round out this review with the mention of tail play because… daaaaaaaaamn….

I HIGHLY recommend this book!

This was such a great book! Returning to the world of Tenebra City is always a joy, and Sin & Spell didn't disappoint. The story pulled me in immediately, and I was engaged right to the end. If you've read the other books in this series you'll enjoy finding the easter eggs, but this is an interconnected standalone series so it's not necessary to read the others before this one.

Eden is a handsome, mysterious incubus who makes an offer that seems too good to be true... and the main character decides to throw caution to the wind for once to enjoy the fantasy. The book takes you on an emotional ride but it was so worth it at the end. Menaces to lovers with a lovely HEA, I can't wait to see more from this author!

Stop everything you're doing and read this book now!

Like Kore's first novel, Quiver & Quill, Sin & Spell is a wonderful, immersive reading experience. The second person POV that places the reader as the FMC of the novel is so rarely seen and Kore is an absolute master of the craft.

From the very first page, you're drawn into a beautiful story of a cinnamon roll of an incubus with a tail that has a mind of its own and the FMC bakery owner. The story is the perfect blend of banter, feelings and spice with an extra dose of tail play to round it out.

Kore has managed to write yet another story with a top tier book boyfriend that you won't stop thinking about.

Oh wow!
I can’t stop thinking about this story!
I loved every minute of it and I really appreciated all the subtle (and obvious) nods to the other books in the universe. The world building that’s going on in these books is so impressive.

The main characters dynamic as a couple was so cute and honestly so funny with how they complement each other despite how on the surface different they seem. I really appreciate the character descriptions and I felt like I could see their facial expressions and emotions through the page.

Also who doesn’t love a good contract trope xD or even some spicy tail play?
I already can’t wait for the next release!

SIN AND SPELL

Honestly, the first half was so amazing and then I was sad in the middle and then smiling through the rest.

This book was SO sweet. And I find myself attached to NEON PINK.
With an incubus who cannot decide on a tie, to a witch without magic, Sin & Spell pulled me into a wild ride with MC and Eden.
I absolutely love reading from second person, thanks to the amazing A.M. Kore. Go pre-order Frame and Fraud and read the first installment of Tenebra City's Paranormal Romance, Quiver and Quill to get a fill of cormata and scones and earl grey tea.

This book was and is PARADISE!

The first book in this series was one of my favorites I've read this year (I never knew I would love books written in second POV this much) and yet again, this author has blown me away with her writing in this book! <3

I'm swooning over Eden Decameron. He has my whole heart! He's literally an incubus and a cinnamon roll in one. How everything is written, the quotes, the recurring phrases, ... This book is just AMAZING!

Everything this author will publish, I will definitely read and I can't wait for her next book!!!

I absolutely love this book. While it focuses more on the mature themes everything comes together nicely and logically where little detains can be relevant again later. The spicy scenes are very well written without seeming forced. One of my favorite things about this book are the chapter introductions. Those first pages have such a good hook and draw me in with the way the scene is introduced. Got to say, this book has one of my favorite opening lines and I am going to remember the engrained witty humor for a long time.

This book really grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go! From start to finish Eden was the most enticing menace (the TAIL) and the development of the relationship with the FMC was phenomenal!

The interactions between the FMC and Eden, and all the other characters has turned me absolutely savage and I am eagerly awaiting more about Evie and Cadmus!

The nods and Easter eggs sprinkled throughout S&S made me miss both Quiver & Quill and Grinch & Guile so much so that I can't wait to see what Kore has coming for us!

Absolute 10/10 recommend ALL Tenebra City books to anyone looking for a fabulous story, beautiful world, and an extra bit of spice! Everyone loves a good monster romance ;)

A.M. Kore has really done it again. She managed to fit all these amazing tropes and wrapped it up in a neon pink bow. Not to mention the easter eggs... Kore truly has a gift for writing and has masterfully created her own world inspired from greek mythology and classic tales.

Eden had me enamored from the first page and he's a true [neon] menace. Contract trope AND tail play? Yes, please. Thank you Ms. Kore for yet another fun read.

A Scintillating and Spicy Read

I loved this book from start to finish.
Eden is such a vibrant character and he leaps from the page. Everything about the characters and the story really draws you in. Kore's world building is on point, and I love the little cameos the other denizens of this world play. It ties the series so far together nicely.
The perfect balance of spice and plot.

This is the second book by this author I’ve DNF. It’s because of the writing. It’s not bad at all, just not for me. I literally feel like I’m reading in slow motion with her books. Her writing is at a level 8 and my brain function can only handle levels 3-5 lol. I’m sad about it because the storyline/plot sounds interesting

I don't generally like second person stories but this was immersive enough that the pov disappeared in my brain and I was able to read it the same way I read third person stories. I really liked both main characters, and how they gradually opened up to each other. The side characters were interesting and I enjoyed seeing the MC go to therapy and learn how to deal with her issues because of it.

This was a fun & beautiful read! I admit that I struggled to read the book in 2nd POV and it would be better if its done in 1st pov. I don’t think we ever heard the heroine’s name here lol?? Did the author mentioned it somewhere Idk….It’s poetic, sensual & funny and the same time tho.
