The Ex Files

Rate this book
Cassandra Reynolds can see a red flag from a mile away.

In fact, it’s her job. A favor for a friend in college who was afraid she’d been catfished soon turned into a full-blown business. Now, as the owner of The Ex Files, a matchmaking service based Ocean View, she dates men nearly every day of the week in order to vet them, assuring the matches she makes are perfectly informed and free of heartache.

With her job comes pitfalls, though: every man she meets is hiding something, trying to impress, and not showing his true colors. It’s just not worth the emotional stress to even try anymore. But when she has to attend her father’s wedding, the man who once lived his own double life, she realizes after years of matchmaking, she has no date of her own to bring to the event.

His sisters want him to have the happily-ever-after their parents do.

When mechanic Luke Dawson helps a woman on the side of the road, he didn’t think it would be the matchmaker his sisters set him up with. But just one date is all it takes for him to decide that he’s not going for a match - he’s interested in the matchmaker herself.

Now it’s his job to convince her to give him a shot without scaring her off. But try after try, he’s hitting obstacles in the form of the strict and uptight rules she’s crafted in order to protect herself.

Can he get past her walls and make her see they’d be a perfect match if she let herself fall?

Morgan is a born and raised Jersey girl, living there with her two boys, toddler daughter, and mechanic husband. She’s addicted to iced espresso, barbecue chips, and Starburst jellybeans. She usually has headphones on, listening to some spicy audiobook or Taylor Swift. There is rarely an in between.

Writing has been her calling for as long as she can remember. There’s a framed ‘page one’ of a book she wrote at seven hanging in her childhood home to prove the point. Her entire life she’s crafted stories in her mind, begging to be released but it wasn’t until recently she finally gave them the reigns.

I’m so grateful you’ve agreed to take this journey with me.

if she said 'inner sex fiend' one more time...
Cassie was so utterly unlikeable. From the moment they met, not letting him get a word in, literally telling him he isn't a mechanic because he doesn't 'dress like one', and breaking his and her own heart for no clear reason. she was just so dumb.

I do not understand all the 5-star reviews for this book. Cassie Reynolds is a matchmaker who interviews prospective male clients by taking them on two dates and looking for red flags... One night her car breaks down on the road, and a super hot guy stops to help. He calls her "sweetheart" before he even knows her name. Red flag. Turns out he's a possible client. They meet for their first date, and he refuses to engage in one of the date's activities. Red flag. So then there's the second date. They end up at her place all hot and heavy, and she thinks "I can’t find the one thing that would turn off this attraction to him. I can’t find a single reason to push him away, protect myself, and ask him to leave." Moments later he says, "You say no and this ends. You say no, I’m out that door, and you won’t have to deal with me again." Red flag! Two pages later they're having sex. He uses the c-word and smacks her on the ass. RED FLAG! Cassie, sweetheart, I don't think you're very good at your job.

Dnf at 14% FMC was horrible. She was rude to the MMC immediately for no reason. Then the fact that she still had contact with her toxic father and his family and was dreading his wedding where they would continue to treat her poorly? No thanks. Stop writing toxic families into romance books. It’s NOT cute or funny.

cassie is always the matchmaker but has never met her own match!! after vetting out guys in college for her friends, cassie turns it into her own business, where she goes on two ‘dates’ (actually interviews) with men to add to her roster and to weed out any red flags they may have. luke’s sisters set him up on a dating website, which just so happens to be cassie’s company. luke decides that he doesn’t want to go through the regular process because he wants the matchmaker!! he wants her to give him a fair chance, so they set a trial so he can convince her that they are a perfect match

—— thoughts/opinions/spoilers

so truly… i need to be better at making these reviews, bc ms girls i am struggling to remember what happened in these books lmaooo (thank god for those notes and highlights!!)

ok so i really like morgan elizabeth, her writing style is really digestible and the books are easy to read. i think this is probably more of a 3.5 leaning more towards a 4

cassie having a pretty crappy love life was a relatable so obviously i enjoyed that aspect of the book (lmao); where she’d pretty much veto guys for her friends in university? yah my roommates would 100% do that for me back then

the way luke and cassie met was funny lmao - kept me engaged and was predictable but duh didn’t rlly deter me

luke kinda felt too like … macho man for me tbh; like these are my decisions 😡 and u got no say!!! 😤 i know it was supposed to be more like possessive man who knows what he wants but i was like whoaaaa cowboy calm down a lil (howeva, i did love that he called her just to say hey)

onto side characters — SO glad that cassie found a friend in gabi (gabrielle aka her assistant? coworker?) bc like we all need a good friend amirite. made me excited for her book too

it was supposed to be small town, but it wasn’t ✨ giving ✨ small town , ya know??

omg ok i remember the end, lmfao morgan elizabeth’s spicy scenes are omg, it’s a fun callback i guess and obvy luke was all on that — cute epilogue/hea!11 (we love a proposal scene)

The spicy scenes in this one just weren’t doing it for me. I did not at all enjoy the use of “wet” as a noun (FMC kept saying things like “he swiped his fingers through my wet”) and it grossed me out). I didn’t have the same issue with Tis the Season For Revenge, so hopefully this was an anomaly!

2.75 ⭐️

This book was a quick and easy read. First for me by this author, I would be happy to read others I’m not running to Amazon or anything but I’d definitely like to check out others.

- Dual POV
- Grumpy/sunshine in reverse
- Small town romance
- ‘She’s the one’

Our two leads are Luke and Cassie, she is a bad@SS lady boss and he is a dirty talking machine.

Cassie dates for a living, she started her own business from her dorm room and now she is a successful businesswoman who helps others find love. Ween out the creeps and the weirdos for those looking for a serious relationship. Though for a woman who can easily believe that love is out there for everyone, she doesn’t believe it for herself. She has a troubled past with her family and it’s made her jaded. Doesn’t help that due to her family she has many insecurities that she can’t get over.
So when she goes on a date and Luke decides he’s playing for keeps, he wants her not a set up with someone else. How will she react? Will she let her walls down or will she build them so high even his dirty talking can’t break them.

Luke comes from a beautiful family, they come from money but more than that, they have been the picture perfect HEA. When he sees this sassy, quick mouthed woman on the side of the road he knows he wants more of her, no way to find her and then BAM the dating company his sister made him use throws her right in front of him again. He isn’t going to waste this chance, two dates will never be enough.
Is he determined enough to smash down her walls or will he mess it up before it even gets started?
Can he make her see how beautiful she really is?

One thing I was really mad at the book for is the two weeks we missed, we missed them dating more than the ‘3 dates’ we missed them technically falling in love and it’s such a shame cause I think that would have been great to see. It definitely effected my rating here.

All in all it was a cute, slightly hot, quick read.

this book was actually such a waste of time. it looked so promising from the description and i thought it could be cute, but i literally was DRAGGING my way through it until i couldn’t take it anymore.

the main characters were just SO ANNOYING. like i was expecting this powerhouse female lead who runs her own business and takes no shit from men, but then the whole fucking time she has absolutely no backbone (the fact that she is in her late 20s/early 30s and STILL feels obligated to be around her toxic ass horrible family) — and then there is the male lead. he is genuinly your stereotypical mechanic/gruff man, yet still equally charming/carefree/charismatic puppy character like?? pick one. the tropes were exhausting, the whole conflict of the book was completely pointless and dumb like “boohoo my dad cheated on my mom and i can never find love bc of it” like okay?? at that point you are literally choosing to ignore good chances at love (not even that luke was definitely the one but he for the most part seems to truly care for cassie)

also side note, ik this is probably self published so go off for that good job, but some things as simple as missing quotation marks made it annoying and confusing to read some parts like the dialogue was hard to pick up on which is a very easy edit to make. and no it wasnt just one time and im being picky, like it was giving wattpad first book at some points with the lack of punctuation/grammar issues/cheesy dialogue (fr cassie, say “okay, luke” ONE MORE TIME-)

all in all reading this was absolutely exhausting and it was a dnf (which i hardly ever do but god damn, this was simply tipping point for me)

I was really enjoying this book and the relationship until about 60% through. Luke, the love interest, became really possessive and honestly verbally aggressive toward Cassie, the main character. For the most part, I still think it's a good romance, but he could have handled Cassie's trauma and its impact on her life in a much better way. He didn't give her time to process and accept her feelings and instead expected her to be at the same level he was at. I will say that I did think Cassie was a *bit* ridiculous in how she was handling her issues, but he still should have been more empathetic and understanding toward her instead of constantly arguing with her and pushing her.

Bon petit livre d’amour quétaine pour me remettre dedans. Le mot « fuck » est beaucoup trop utilisé dans le vocabulaire de Luke, ca enlève toute intensité dans le discours vu sa surutilisation. Toutefois un petit livre de voyage qui se lit bien et rapidement.

⚠️ mild spoilers ?? maybe ⚠️

💭 some characters would really benefit from therapy, in general. cassandra, the main character, should be #1 on that list. i know it's a rom-com, supposed to be light hearted and fun, but if you're gonna insert deep conversations such as what was in this book, it'd be nice for therapy to be mentioned. idk about you but a dudes 🍆 isn't going to make me be "cured" from the trauma i endured.

💭 there's something about morgan elizabeth's male characters that i don't necessarily like .... their personality is fine. but i think it's the possessiveness, the "you're mine" attitude after meeting the female main character for 2 minutes. saw it in 'tis the season for revenge' also. it works sometimes but apparently not or this author.

💭 in saying that though, i did like the book! those two things were just two big things that really stood out for me.

Sooooo. Why the fuck did I take this long to pick this book and series up? It has literally been on my KU TBR for like a year or two or whenever it was published. So what's wrong with me? Can we talk about this book for a second because I enjoyed myself so much when reading this. I loved that Luke just automatically knew that Cassie was the one. Sometimes I just need a good book where the MC knows that the FMC is the one. Ugh so satisfying. Just chef's kiss. But what's holding me back was just the indecisiveness that Cassie was going through during the book. Just seeing how Luke was 100% with Cassie but she had some doubts... I wasn't a major fan with that. But, overall, I had so much fun reading this book.

╭⊹ ₊˚⊹ "𝙰𝚗𝚘𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚍𝚊𝚢 𝚊𝚗𝚘𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚍𝚊𝚝𝚎"

˚ ┊✦ this book ever since I saw it has been my anticipated reads for June for start of summer reads, I love reading these rom coms around summer even with it being a cute cover that just screams summer!!

Cassie has a special ability knowing red flags of guys from a mile away just knowing their odd behaviour she just knows she helps her friend who has been worried she been catfished. I find it weird aswell she goes onto matchmaking dates.

╭⊹ ₊˚⊹"𝙎𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚"

˚ ┊✦ Cassie - I really enjoyed cassie character a lot in this book she was such easy going to read and enjoyable I loved how confident she is about her job when other people might have mixed opionions about what she does. I also loved that the fact her mother and sisters are more supportive about her job aspect aswell keeping her happy buying her clothes and necessities I just love that she’s in a positive environment which makes life more interesting too.

╭⊹ ₊˚⊹ "𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙢 𝙖 𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙚 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙧, 𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩. 𝙔𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙖 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩. 𝙄𝙢 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚"

˚┊✦ ˚ Luke - it took me a couple chapters to start liking Luke I love this different aspect with the male character being so loved by his family and vice versa how he loves his sister so much to the moon and back is just so heartwarming not seeing male side family toxic drama for once.
The fact that his mum is so protective of her son you may sometimes find these annoying in some romances but for some reason with how sweet Luke’s family is together it’s just so heartwarming to see that he does come from a loving warm home

╭⊹ ₊˚⊹ "𝙈𝙮 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚, 𝙈𝙮 𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙨, 𝙄𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙨"

˚┊✦ ˚ the romance of this was just pure lush! I loved it so much when Luke was so charmingly handsome when it came to cassie knowing why she does the matchmaking due I can’t say as it ruins the whole plot but damn he just cares for her even more and vice versa for Cassie knowing that his sisters just cares for him not being single for rest of his life like can that family not get any cuter ?

The ending of this book I can literally just screammmm!! The fact it made me tear up this book definitely deserves a 5 star from me it was just so wholesome I coildnt get enough of these two. Even the whole family of Luke’s love Cassie and her perks of the job.

I really do recommend this book a lot if you love rom com/ romance like me and cute this is definitely for you! I am so excited to read the rest of this series to find out more what other characters is in store 🤩🤗

Dit boek is afschuwelijk slecht.
Waarom ik het dan helemaal tot het einde geluisterd heb? Om anderen te waarschuwen.
Doing the lord's work over here.

(Excuse me???) Niet met haar, uiteraard, want ze vindt bij elk van hen wel een red flag. (Ja, want zij is zo perfect *eye roll*)

I was lucky enough to receive and ARC copy of this book and when I say you NEED to read this. I’m not joking! I put my university deadlines on hold for this 😂

This book has traits from Morgan’s Springbrook Hills series that I loved, but also some new traits that were fantastic!

Luke Dawson
✅ Mama’a Boy
✅ Mechanic
✅ Comes from money but doesn’t flaunt it
✅ Dirty Talker

Luke Dawson is 100% man written by woman! He’s everything a girl wants but he hasn’t found the one! Coming from a household where he’s the baby and the only boy, his two sisters worry that at age 30, still single, he might never get there!
Growing up with parents who are the embodiment of ‘Love at first site’, his sisters demand he at least try look for someone! So they set him up with a match maker!…. In walks Cassie!

Cassie Reynolds
✅ Business Woman
✅ Mid size heroine
✅ Walls as high as Mt Everest

Cassie Reynolds has built her business ‘The Ex Files’, in order to filter out scum of the earth men, or tinder swizzlers, and red flag connoisseurs, in order to help women find the man of their dreams, without all the heartache that ensues!
Cassie grew up with a less than perfect family, trauma that runs deep and is partially the reason that ‘The Ex Files’ is the business it is! Meeting men, for 2 dates only, deciding if they are worthy enough to be matched with someone, is the method that has worked wonders, eliciting hundreds of wedding invites and baby scans, proving how successful she is! The proof is in the pudding right?

Until she agrees to work with Luke! On that first date, something is different, all of her carefully crafted rules are being tested? But can she take the leap, and trust this 5⭐️ man to catch her?

This book is just fantastic! I already cannot wait to read the next instalment to the series! I don’t want to give away too many spoilers so as vague as this review may be, trust me, you NEED to read it!

Luke Dawson may just give Tony a run for his money 😉🥺🌶 iykyk

“Because I f&%ked up and I fell for this man, and I am going to get hurt, and I will never, ever be fine again.”

When you build a business spotting red flags from a mile away you get pretty good at weeding out the duds. Casandra is the own of Ex Files a matchmaking series in Ocean View where she gets men before putting them with their perfect match.

With her job comes every red flag you could possibly think of so Cassandra has build a list of questions to find her preys true colours. One date never ever a second one. No stress, no attachment. Her fathers wedding fast approaching and no time to find someone to accompany her, she realises after all these years she’s never put energy into finding her match.

Enter Luke Dawson, the knight in shining armour who out of his own kind soul helps a damsel in distress on the side of the road. What he didn’t foresee was her being the woman his sisters have set him up with to find the one. While she’s tries to stick to her iron tight process Luke manages to detail everythjng and they go rouge.

Neither of them can deny their chemistry, and Luke won’t take no for an answer. He proves why she should take the leap and knock down her walls to let him in. The perfect match is always where and when you least expect it.

I loved everything about this story, the characters, the setting and plot. Looking forward to continuing the series. Elizabeth is quickly becoming a fav author of mine every book hits just where you want it to and her spice is chefs kiss.

Cute story overall! I like that we get so much relationship and character development instead of useless side plot details. Morgan Elizabeth knows I'm just here for the romance, and she doesn't waste time on boring shit.

Luke can definitely be overly controlling at times, and Cass' commitment issues were so intense that it became kind of comical near the end. Her dad was also so cruel and such an obvious villain that it didn't make sense for her to be in contact with him at all. Like why would she go to his wedding, let alone keep in touch with him? He's got zero redeeming qualities.

Loved the chemistry and the overall plot though. And I hope Gabi's got her own book because I definitely want more of her! #protectGabiatallcosts

Also, why is barely anyone talking about "Cassandra LASTNAMEIFORGOT"??? That's the funniest shit I've ever seen. Almost bumped this up to 4 stars because of how hard that made me laugh.

2.5 stars rounded up.

This was not my favorite Morgan Elizabeth book. Which was super sad considering Tis The Season For Revenge was #7 on my list of over 50 books read last year.

Cassie and Luke were cute and I really related to Cass as a character many times. However, I also wanted to punch her through 75% of the book 😂 Luke was precious and I was willing to forgive his temper bc he literally would have done anything for her.

There were definitely a bunch of sweet moments in this book, but it was missing a lot for me.

This really did not work for me. The inner monologue and the conflict was so repetitive. Over and over and over again. Then there were the continuity errors, which I can usually look past, but there were so many and I already wasn’t loving the writing.

On top of all that I didn’t love the characters. Cassie was so unlikeable and honestly? Stupid. I barely liked Luke, but he still deserved better. There was no need to be fighting That Hard for someone who acts the way she does.
