WOW!! Reading this because it's a practical exercise in reading elementary German at a level where I am reading German ... but suddenly discovering that it's really a very interesting little story for children with implications for children of all ages!!! Excellent!! Highly recommended whether you're reading it in English or German!!!

An interesting bilingual book, but there isn’t really a significant plot things just kind of happen. There is no climax, just rising action, and then falling action. There doesn’t actually seem to be a resolution either.

A good book for learning!

I regret to say that despite doing duolingo for over 1000 days, I struggled with this. I need to review hiragana.

I realized that I gave a review on the wrong version of this book…. So I am re-writing it here.
DONT JUDGE ME.
I’m trying to learn Italian on my own.
And reading children’s books is helping a lot !!!
This has some new words in it for me that I personally wouldn’t have learned in a different context: dragons / scarecrow/ monsters but also words I would use more often such as cherries.

Lately I’ve been using the children’s books method as well as watching shows in that language + listening to music!

Susie’s mom wanted to bake a care for her family.
She wanted Susie to go to the store & get the stuff she needed.
Susie feared several things.
Susie managed to make it to the store.

What happened then?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (preschool/elementary age) English-German children’s storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational presentation (overcoming fear), English-German children’s movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

What is Scary?

In this story, a little girl is sent to a store in the village to pick up a few ingredients to make a cake. Along the way, however, she runs across scary things like monsters and scarecrows... and there seemed to be creepy eyes everywhere. However, when joined by her grandfather on the way home, she realizes that none of what she saw earlier was accurate. Her fear had caused her to see things that weren't there. This is a dual-language book in German and English. While my German is a little rusty, I thought some words and phrases weren't quite translated right between the two languages. Unlike some of this author's other books, the English words were not always next to the German translation. Sometimes, instead, the author gave a few brief paragraphs in English before translating them all into German. The illustrations were well done, and the scary portion of the book did look appropriately dark and creepy. All in all, despite some flaws, if you have a bilingual child who knows both English and German or if they are learning German in school, this picture book could help them pick up new vocabulary and structures.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

👧Loved the artwork and focused message👍👍

I read the bilingual English/French version of this story of a little girl who lets her imagination run wild to create frights and monsters wherever she looks is lovely. The artwork is so colorful and makes little Susie's journey to town and back a delight. I can see a child loving the pictures and the before/after format is optimal for getting the message across. The vocabulary is fairly simple and great for young readers in the first grade or two venturing into another language. The coloring pages in the physical book are a nice touch bonus.

I read a complimentary copy of the story shared by the author through Hidden Gems; this is my voluntary and honest review.

The illustrations were exceptional. The story about a child's discovery about what was causing her to be scared. I read on Kindle and had trouble with the print that was too small for my eyes. I tried to make it bigger but could not get it bigger. I ended up using a magnifying glass !

Susie, the little girl was afraid to go to the store for her mother to get butter, cherries and flour. She finally made it to the store but it was getting late so her grandfathere picked her up in his motorcycle. After she got home and realize all the horrible things that might happen to her did not turn out to be true. It was her imagination that made things fearful.

Disappointing

I purchased this book because it's bilingual.

However it was too much emphasis on fear as the character overcome fear.

I want to learn French to teach a second language , but this isn't the right book for us.

One of my StoryGraph reading challenge prompts was to read a book in a different language, so I’m counting this one! It was a humbling experience. Duo Lingo is definitely giving me an inaccurately inflated sense of proficiency haha

I love the bilingual books for children. Children are the easiest to pick up a second language. Congratulations to authors who write them.

I’m learning French so I may be reading a few children’s books written in French. It’s great way to learn a new language.
