Pdf file download from Internet. I first know this book from Yu Jie 《中國影帝溫家寶》 林达 (1952年-),是一对美国籍华人作家夫妇合用的笔名。另有“丁林”、“Dinglin2”等筆(網)名。夫為丁鴻富,妻為李曉琳。两人都是1952年出生于上海,曾插队黑龙江省。1991年移居美国。
I first came across this book before I studied in the US. It gives an unusual and in-depth view of the society, which I found intriguing. However, looking back, their narrative appears rather romanticized, and it bothers me that many issues were glossed over. I find this quote by a Chinese commentator useful for thinking about their book: "While they are writing about America, they are really concerned about China. In light of this, we can better make sense of the choices they made in writing this book."
【2021Book10】“历史深处的忧虑(Concerns in the Depths of History)” by Linda. This is a collection of letters presenting to Chinese people how deeply the Bill of Rights influences Americans’ daily lives. Two points in this book are very impressive to me. The first one is, about the USA, “It is meaningless to either only appreciate its success from one side, or only to mock its problems from the other.” The second one is: “it is brave to regard the citizens’ right and freedom as the ultimate goal even though knowing what is the cost”. I think, in today’s tough international situation, this book is worthy of reading because it promotes understanding. ★★★★★
Great book introducing United States Bill of Rights by a writer couple who were Chinese immigrants living in America. The book reminds me of the course "the economics of law" I took in college, where students read many lawsuit cases and analyze them from economic perspectives. This book uses vivid examples, including famous lawsuit cases that were famous and controversial, to introduce Bill of Rights. It applies a format of letters (to the authors' friend), so the whole book is conversational and easy to read, however still very informative.
I read almost all books I can find by 林达 in college. I would say they are the best books for Chinese to understand the American society. Plus they are very entertaining, I didn't want to take a break after I started reading
